"I think the value proposition is strong. People who say you should optimize your website once instead of using a service may be forgetting that browsers and mobile devices are constantly changing. New optimizations are being developed all the time. Using a hosted service lets you take advantage of those new developments without having to do anything. Performance optimization tends to be the last item on developers to-do list and often gets put off for higher priority issues. At Torbit, we often hear people say "we know we could/should optimize our site but just haven't gotten around to it yet". Torbit offers a similar value proposition as Site Speed Service but we focus on customers who need a more robust solution and a company that is accessible when it comes to support. As a higher-end competitor to Google service, I'm excited to see them validate what we're doing. It will be up to customers to decide whether they want to trust Google with their data. Regardless, the idea of..." - Josh Fraser

"At Torbit we're doing the detection server-side (using UserAgent) and are serving up unique URL's for each size of the image.  That way we don't need to worry about proxies caching the wrong size or trying to change any specs.  It has worked well so far." - Josh Fraser

Re: Scripting News: Why Google cares if you use your real name - http://www.disqus.com/people...
"Names actually make for pretty terrible primary keys.  Emails work way better & they already have those. I'm not saying Google doesn't make tons of other decisions based on the $$$, but in this case I think they really are just trying to cut down on the amount of douchebaggery. Take a look at 4chan and see what happens when you anonymity reigns." - Josh Fraser

my first thought that it must be a javascript redirect, but it's not. so yes, it does look like a partnership might be in the works. wouldn't call that a "merger" though. - Josh Fraser

Re: Email Reputation Causes Penalties in Google Search Results - http://www.lockergnome.com/web...
"Isn't email tracking usually done using an image beacon and aren't images turned off by default in GMail? It sounds to me like you may have accidentally purged a lot of active readers by putting too much faith in flawed reporting tools. Sure, you should never send email to anyone who marked you as spam, but deleting people just because they don't have images turned on is probably overkill." - Josh Fraser
