you could have mace your comments more perfectly also ;)
- Nicole Simon
Nicole, if the number of my comments had some how worked out to be in a perfect sequence I may have had an aneurysm from the awesomeness.
- Mark Wilson
Jim, I usually use half & half but ran out. Milk was the only option. BARF.
- Mark Wilson
Coffee was meant to be drank black. People who think otherwise are insane
- Alan Simpson
in that situation I think I would probably run out for coffee, or have a coke instead. Barf is totally the right word for your solution. I'm very sorry to hear it.

"Russian teens have now new fun. They dare trains. This is needed to be done fast, because if one is appearing before the train too long before and machinist could see him and start breaking, so they run on the rails just before the train so he couldn’t start breaking and fell down on the rails, then the train moves above the person at his maximum speed, just a few inches from his head and back. Russian teen girls seem to go for this too." Seems like a kind of bad idea.
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
I believe this happens in Chico every year, except it's usually a drunk student who sleeps on the tracks because they are warm...
- Louis Gray
It looks like the most dangerous part is getting onto the tracks late enough that the engineer doesn't see you, but late enough that the train doesn't hit you.
- Gabe
Take some idiots from lowest percentile of 140+ million population, put a tag "Russians" and here you go - the image of the country is ready. Russian bears and balalaikas, anyone? :) Disclosure: I'm from Russia
- Boris Тylevich
Inventive, but crazy stupid. I still vote for the American that hopped onto the back of bullet trains in Japan and held himself there by the window seals for the entire ride as the craziest though.
- xero
hahaha the craziest thing about this is that the person under the train is a girl! :)
- BigBuckYeah
That looks like one of the most pointless things you could do. Now the train drivers are going to start suffering from emotional trauma in the long run as they start hitting more idiots.
- Richard A.
Ok, let's ask Russians if anyone knows about it ;) I've never heard about that!
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
@Sasha: Fine. Great weather etc. Currently consulting at a customer, so normal work so far :S
- Jemm
i think its ok to label it "russian teens". if its a trend in youth culture and it has its origin in russia. i would never asume that all russians do that because of the labeling. media works that way and most media users are used to these fake sterotype news
- Chris Hofmann
According to William Dear's book The Dungeon Master, students at Michigan State were doing this in 1979. (Not all of them. Just a few lunatics.)

Approx quote: I want you all to take a moment to look outside at the beautiful sunrise. Life is a precious gift. I should know. I've taken 8 lives in my 38 years as a train operator. I almost took my 9th today, a passenger on this train. I don't want to be any angrier or sadder. Please be careful. http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Bruce Lewis
You need a serious pair of balls to try that. Oh, and kids, don't try this at home.
- Yuval Atzmon
I just can't bring myself to like this. It's suicide.
- April Buchheit
Not like there is a down turn of males in Russia due to overweight, alchohol issues, and doing some dangerous jobs, the new male population is daring trains? Nice.
- CW™
These kids have too much free time. Give them something constructive to do and help them avoid these bad decisions.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Thanks for your comment Bruce. Very sobering.
- Roberto Bonini
I always wondered if there was enough clearance to do that. (I was more wondering: if you fell onto subway tracks, and a train was coming full bore at you, should you flatten yourself on the tracks, or squeeze in next to the tracks, or try your best to climb out, or flatten yourself against the wall, or...)
- ⓞnor
Always wanted to do that. I've noticed, however, that there are train engines in our country which have some very low parts. I'd have to measure myself laying down and try it with a cardboard box of the same height first... it kind of defeats the purpose when you take precautions before doing crazy things.
- Goran Zec
Goran, if you think about it, this stunt is not crazy just plain stupid: like watching a horror movie with eyes and ears closed, defeating the purpose. Real crazy would be if they lay on the track on their backs with the faces towards the the train underbody, eyes open. Just a bunch of kids wanting some rep points but ending up looking, and being EXTREMELY stupid.
- vijay
I don't know, I think it's still pretty intense, even without watching. But yes, it would be more fun to look up. However, it's certainly not fair to the people driving the trains.
- Goran Zec
Also, it probably releases a shitload of adrenaline when you do that and, as such, is a workable replacement for taking drugs.
- Goran Zec
Ugh - I can't like this. Grew up near train tracks, and about every three years or so some idiot tries gets mowed down trying to cross the river by using the RR bridge. There are so many other ways to get an adrenaline rush that don't make someone's job a living hell.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I get my daily train commute "interuppted" about once a year becuase of that :(
- Roberto Bonini
Goran, for the maximum effect you'd probably want to lay down *facing* the train (not like the person in the photo), and look forward. Assuming you had enough clearance to raise your head enough to look forward. Agreed that this is not actually a remotely acceptable thing to do.
- ⓞnor
@e3r: re subway: not sure about your part of world, but here in Soviet Russia (tm), we have a special kinda gutter running between the rails, provided there for such cases specially. Moving to the side of the track puts you in danger of getting in touch with the pin rail and being electrocuted before the train arrives
- Bleys

It just gets old. Activity has slowed down (and I'm not the only one who has noticed). People have grown fairly negative or at least they are more comfortable at expressing it. A lot of the content I've seen on FF many many times before. I'm wearing out my block button at this rate. I've taken time away from it and honestly I don't even miss it. I like some of the people but there's not much of a point anymore.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I know chica and I'm really not trying to be dramatic or anything. Just really pointing out how things have changed and wondering how many people feel the same way.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I was talking about this with a friend recently, about how the more time I was spending alone, the less interesting some of my online activities have become. I think it's because it highlights how superficial it all can be sometimes. When I was working and interacting with people every day, the online fun was just that, fun. But since I've been out of work and I got lazy and relied on the internets to provide me with meaningful interactions, I realized that I really can't do that.
- ♥patricia♥
As much as I love getting to meet new people online, it can't be the only way for me to interact with folks. Which is a bit of a bummer because I've always thought I'd be a good hermit. But if the last few weeks have been any indication, that doesn't seem to be a viable solution to my anti-social problem anymore. Damn.
- ♥patricia♥
waiiitttt a minute. there are still 14 days until April's Fools.
- Thomas Hawk
I have to admit that I'm not pawing through my feed like I used to. I was gone for three straight days two weekends ago and I didn't even bother to go back and see what I missed. I just peeked at feeds of people that I am most interested in and that was it. Perhaps this means we should go back and tweak our subscriptions and feed settings to suit our tastes better now? Dunno...

I haven't been here long enough to have local context, but I've been moderator for another close-knit online community for several years, and I'd say most of the regulars, myself included, phase in and out of our enchantment. The climate shifts, too, as people come and go and differently combine. Since I don't know you, I won't presume any of that applies to you, I'm just mentioning the possibility. In any case, your name always makes me smile.
- Rebecca
I totally agree and have felt this way for awhile, but keep thinking it's just me and the newness has worn off.
- Trish R
All I can say is, bitch if you go somewhere I am coming to your house and beating that ass. So think real hard before you make any decisions that could be costly . . .

How do you know that's not what I want you to do Kaia? *evil laugh* My plan is finally working MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Hard times from the "real world" may also affect these communities: more bad and depressing news (collapsing companies, unemployment etc), less innovation, less new products and services. Everything combined make people depressed and anxious and more likely to express their feelings in social media, too. Fortunately this is only temporary and good times will return:)
- Jemm
Just to offer another side... my interest in FF is still increasing almost by the day. I do see some of the negativity etc. that people have been talking about lately, but that seems to me to be counterbalanced by the amount of interesting/funny/entertaining stuff posted by cool people (like yourself, and many others as well). So there!
- Jim Hearts FF
...what Jim said. And Lindsey...we love you...don't go! :)
- JA Castillo
I agree. I'm finding FF less useful. It does not 'feel' like it's growing like twitter is...
- Ryan
Interesting, Ryan. I'm using Twitter less and FF more. I prefer the conversations on FF.
- Laura B.
It's up to us to keep FF alive and interesting. We should try to find new sources to share new, interesting content. Subscribing to new people makes home feed more alive, if current contacts have slowed down. If home feed doesn't refresh often enough, it's just a sign of being subscribed to too few people.
- Jemm
yeah this is a sad note to read. my time here has dropped dramatically, but I'm still a diehard fan. Maybe even more so given all the Twitter hype. So, although I'm using Twitter more, the conversations I've read and taken part in on FF have brought me so much more joy, knowledge, and resulting allegiance.
- Marko Bon
Have to admit that I'm not as "addicted" as I was "back in the day." I miss FF circa June-ish 2008 (I joined on March 16, 2008). I was pretty much staying up all day and night here on FF. I'm still here quite a lot, but it's definitely evolving as a community. I gave up on Twitter a while ago too in favor of posting directly here due to the lack of @replies and interaction with the 400+ I follow.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I'm still active, but a lot of the crowd I used to see here aren't so active anymore. My use case has changed from social network interactions to the ability to track information with social signals of what's interesting. But I still do Like birthday posts and such.
- Hutch Carpenter
Lindsey, you're FFHolic's 25th most active user (http://www.ffholic.com/UserInf...). Given that I use FF a lot and you have 7.5 more "activity points" than I do, I can imagine you'd get burned out now and then. Take a break; FF will be waiting for you when you get back.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I noticed about 4 months ago- and some other old timers did- that the increase in popularity had somewhat diluted the quality of posts, leveled out the intenseness of the site, etc. I also think with the election, people stopped reading news and being as engaged as they were before. NOw we're all spiraling into our hobbies and specific interests. So a combination of more diluting, and more specific interests, had made it less fun, in my opinion. If I spent more time cleaning out my subscriptions, and parti

... and participating more, it'd probably be more "old school".
- anna sauce
I think I understand. I rode a huge initial surge that I thought would never end when I started using it, then a sharp drop off, and now a comfortable planing, much more steady and manageable. The key is to not let oneself take it too personally (much harder than it sounds), then it serves the user more than the other way around. Hope to see you around!
- Josh Haley
Mark Wilson can be blamed for many many things. Why not this one? :)
- Lindsey is Fierce!
It's my fault. Every time I try to participate in something like friendfeed, the people I connect with lose interest and go away. I think I overwhelm them with boredom.
- Alan Simpson
Oh, all right, Lindsey. I'll stick the scissors in my other ear, too.
- Steven Perez
@Alan: ..er.. I must have dozed off.. care to repeat? ;)
- Jemm
maybe you just need a lil break...give Twitter another run, you'll undoubtably be back then
- sofarsoShawn
wow, a good blamestorm cleared up the air.

You just have to find the people who post what you like.
- Josh Jenkins
I don't think so Chris. Do you have an interest in them? :P
- Lindsey is Fierce!
FF isn't really that special. It's just a place to share stories and ideas and have conversations around them. FF is a bit over rated in my opinion. It's the communities that matter most.

I go through fits of activity, but can't be here all the time. We have to work, a lot lately, and interact with real life. I think the top FFers suffer the same issues. We can't be here 24/7, and that affects immediate interaction. Now I'm bummed. Don't leave though.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
I got the answer... Facebook. Either you'll love it or you'll come to your senses and just take more of a break from FF and come back when you want.
- CW™
Lindsey, FriendFeed may have lost all of it's attraction, but, and I think I speak for all of us, we all still feel an attraction to you.

dude. lindsey. you're bringing me down. just take a break, get some ice cream and then we'll see you right back here at a more leisurely, cut back pace. You'll find something to love about it again... your approbation is going to come and go just like with anything. i'm sure it has changed in the way that a shiny new toy is not so shiny anymore...?

WHAT? My shiny new toy isn't shiny anymore?? What a ripoff

After the Honeymoon phase, is the 7-month Itch, and counting from June '08 you made it a bit past that. The pain and reward of commitment is now in play. I try to view ff in this bi-fold way: BUILD: creating a feed of content that expresses my personality, thought-life and experience and records resources I'll want to find again some day. INTERACT: the content/feedback I can give and receive, and the friendships that (_can_ - no guarantees, but great thing) develop in the process. Honest post Lindsey, Thx!

@Micah I've been here since April and I'm glad you enjoyed it ;) @Flippity My fights are legendary?? o_O I never fight *angel*

shiny toys lose their sheen when you drool on 'em, drop 'em, kick 'em, drop kick 'em, drag through the dirt and mud, and tote around constantly stuck up in your armpit... that's just how it is, sis, ripoff or no.
- Trish Haley
Lindsey, isn't it like with a family? You are hanging out together too much and then you need a break from everyone. I think it's perfectly normal :) However, there is now way we are letting you go!
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
Here's a thought which won't make me popular. I think FriendFeed's attraction is in the people you chose to watch / subscribe to and importantly to those you chose to interact with. For me, I'm in the camp of following people smarter than me, asking them questions, challenging them and trying to learn from them. I don't come here purely for the idle chat (which is fun too!), but to learn. Does this strike a chord with anyone else?
- Mark Aitken
@Mark I'm of the type that thinks there is much to be learned from idle chit chat and that you don't have to be smarter than me to teach me something ;)
- Lindsey is Fierce!
@Lindsey. Agreed, I'm certainly here to learn too. And in areas I know bugger all about too! I stopped following people who put things into negative statements and started following those who were supportive. Reading the list above, looks like you have tons of supporters! :-) Have you tried looking into areas you aren't into normally? For example, I subscribed to you after spotted some really good stuff you put on Flickr (Mud Blossom is my favourite). Good luck sparking your interest again! :-)
- Mark Aitken
I think you have me mixed up with a different Lindsey. You're not subbed to me :P But thanks for the insight. I'm definitely on a little bit of a break. I just felt it was time to vent something I've been feeling since the beginning of the year
- Lindsey is Fierce!
There are too many Linds(e/a)ys. I can not, in all good conscience, support this.
- B. Hatin
@Lindsey - Sorry, yes I mixed up! My bad! Take a break, switch off for a week or so... Good luck!
- Mark Aitken
Try some of Bec Rowes pills and coke. I hear that cures everything.
- Steve C
I love FF it beats everything else hands down
- Thomas Power
I truly hate to say it, but I've been feeling the same way lately. :(
- Steve Isaacs
I know what's wrong...we're missing our whimsy! NEED MORE WHIMSY. (and by whimsy, I don't mean more lolcats or pix of Elmo checking out a chick's balloon knot)
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
damn it and I thought you were going all "the Bends" :)
- Vicky
it's still a perfect tool for my needs - can't see that changing either
- mike "glemak" dunn
I am thinking that the more you put in, the more you get out of it. Although I have noticed the drop in volume, I still tend to prefer to spend my limited time over here, because I see more interaction here than I see elsewhere. Plus, I really like the people that I am seeing over here for the most part. Including you.
- Martha
Any time you spend a lot of time on a service, you start noticing holes after a while. This might be a time for some reassessing, Lindsey. And no, I don't blame Mark Wilson. :P
- Helen Sventitsky
Amanda, problem is that the Buzz Killington's show up and complain when we partake of the whimsy.
- CW™
Some people said nasty things when I blew up my follow list and started over, but it's helped. I'm still adding people -- slowly -- but recrafting my list one-by-one is giving me an opportunity to get to know what you each are feeding without a lot of noise. That's also helping me build better lists, which will make following more people saner.
- Chris Baskind
Hehe, Chris, I've done the same with twitter, but the sheen has worn off, time to move here (FF) for now.
- Richard A.
i know what you're saying - but what gives me faith is that at many points...twitter was down and out, loads of people had given up on it and look where it is now. Friendfeed still has a HELL of a lot going for it but it definitely needs a new feature or refresher of some sort for people to get excited about it again...the thing about Twitter is that (thanks to its api) there's a continuous flow of new apps and tools which makes it more and often more useful...Friendfeed doesn't really have that, yet
- Zee.
Yeah, you can say that again lindsey.
- Parth Awasthi
I haven't been around as much lately, which I think is some combination of too much offline stuff happening and, as you say, FF not being as active/interesting as it was a few months ago. But it does seem to be a phase thing. It's happened to me before, and then somehow it gets cool again, without me being quite sure what happened. In any case, as others have said, we'd sure miss you around here.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
oh and I just got here, wait is that a coincidence?
- Shane Wolsey
I know a lot of people say it made FF too "noisy" but removal of the "Friend of Friend" feature eliminated a lot of the serendipity and unique connections and shares that were here earlier, makes it slightly less interesting. <sigh> still fun and useful to me, though.
- .LAG liked that
I feel this way all the time, Lindsey. But I do this with every online community I join. There is definitely a honeymoon period and ups and downs. When I feel irritated or bored with it, I leave. My break can be anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days, even to 2 years. I'm currently on about a 2 year break with my favorite boxer forum board. I OD'ed on it for too long. But I still keep up with a few people. Maybe I'll return, maybe I won't. FF has it's good days and bad days for me too but I'll always love it...
- Carmen
Yeah, I'm definitely like that Carmen only I never come back. I go nuts on something for awhile and then I'm done. Right now though feels a little different from previous times. I have a lot more going on in my personal life and there have been noticeable changes here. So I'm just going to see how everything goes :P
- Lindsey is Fierce!
...for the very cool people I enjoy here. I understand if you need a break or to leave but I'll miss your posts, for sure. You're one of my favorite creative inspirations here. *hugs*
- Carmen
No way Carmen . . . you're the one posting all the creative stuff ;)
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I feel your pain. I see the changes too. It's some of the new people, for sure. I'm hiding, unsubbing, avoiding some rooms and turning off Fs of Fs a lot more these days. :-/ Filtering is becoming a nuisance. Personal stuff will just add to it, so I'm sure it's much more of a nuisance for you right now. I hope things smooth out for you. <3
- Carmen
You're both great (and gorgeous!) and a lot of people, myself included, would be sad to see either of you leave. Personally, that goes for many others on here, too. But, at the end of the day, you've gotta do what's best for you.
- Timothy Griffin
I'm annoyed with all "lifestreaming" apps except for maybe Plurk at the moment. This includes Flickr, Facebook, Friendfeed, and Twitter. Hrm. Maybe I'm just getting old and bitter or something...
- Wirehead
You're not getting old, those who you initially conversed with have moved on to do other things, on other networks.
- Richard A.
Yes, but I seemed to have missed the memo on where the cool kids are now. :P
- Wirehead
I'm sure part of the problem arises from this issue: I'm with Lindsey for sure & Scoble's right to say Twitter's suggested follow list is corrupt though his case was b/c one of his friends wasn't on it, but so goes the sames for Friendfeed's whu are the most of the so-called popular follows also the least active? Being at #4 once were you on it? I've noticed to they also stack it with their own staff to in order to self promote themselves.
- sofarsoShawn
Sofar: friendfeed's founders were NOT put on the list by them. They are genuinely popular here. Twitters list works quite differently. As to the point of this thread I have noticed some of the same thing but I just built a new list that has fewer people on it and it is a lot more fun again.
- Robert Scoble
Create new lists, sub to new people. Blah, blah, blah. That will NOT bring the fun back. Believe me, I've tried.
- Mark Wilson
So, what WILL bring the fun back? I want the fun(k), give us the fun(k). We need the fun(k). Gotta have that fun(k).
- Martha
@Scoble I'm curious now as to how they arrived on it? A random Google algorithm or lottery?Being serious their popularity as per twitter is largely due to the same reason "a suggested follow list" thereby they appear on users feeds more frequently(hence more likes/comments) which makes the claim "genuine" popularity doubtful. The fact remains the suggested followers list are still by far the least active/responsive again indicating they're exploiting the service to it's detriment in the same way as twitter.
- sofarsoShawn
& @Marha fun(k) + whimsy as Amanda mentioned: oh yeaaah! I'm not giving up.
- sofarsoShawn
There are so many movies out there with very little censorship and so much violence that there's just no point to it. No conviction at all whatsoever.
