The State, the MTV sketch-comedy show that ran from December 1993 to July 1995, became a bit of a legend for not being available on DVD. There were rumors, and then nothing happened, and there were theories about what the holdup was, and then there were times when it appeared that nobody knew what the holdup was, including the people involved.

"You may want to get onto Justin's forums. I personally see no need to have both image manipulators going at the same time. Again, I suggest adjusting one of the dimensions using Get the Image, then using CSS to crop the other dimension."

"I recommend specifying only one dimension (i.e. width), choosing the 'full' image size and then using CSS to specify the exact opposite dimension (i.e. height) of the image. Anything that doesn't fit in the CSS stated height will then be cropped. If that doesn't work, play around with a variation of those instructions--I'm sure you'll get it:)"

"I promised you I was going to write this tutorial, and gosh darn it, I did. It's my way of saying thank you for all the help you gave me in getting the plugin to work properly. Like I said, WordPress has the best support community out there because of people like you. Not only that, but your plugin is too good and magazine themes are too prevalent for Get the Image to keep being maligned. Btw, congrats on getting listed on http://werockwp.com/ this week. Keep up the excellent work!"

Seeing as how the WordPress category is one of the most successful and popular categories on Themeforest, it seems fit to cover some useful tips on the topic. When it comes to WordPress, many designers seem to be scared off or uninterested in the functions.php file, when really it can be one of the most useful files for your WordPress theme. Today, we will review nine superb code snippets you can use to enhance your theme. One of the biggest benefits of the functions.php file, is that it allows us some abstraction from our regular theme files. Instead of hard coding information or queries into, say, our single.php file, we can use our functions.php file instead to alter it. Later on down the road, if we need to make any changes, we can simply edit one file instead of many.

You need three things to create a successful startup: to start with good people, to make something customers actually want, and to spend as little money as possible. Most startups that fail do it because they fail at one of these. A startup that does all three will probably succeed. And that's kind of exciting, when you think about it, because all three are doable. Hard, but doable. And since a startup that succeeds ordinarily makes its founders rich, that implies getting rich is doable too. Hard, but doable. If there is one message I'd like to get across about startups, that's it. There is no magically difficult step that requires brilliance to solve.

Stack Overflow is a programming Q & A site that's free. Free to ask questions, free to answer questions, free to read, free to index, built with plain old HTML, no fake rot13 text on the home page, no scammy google-cloaking tactics, no salespeople, no JavaScript windows dropping down in front of the answer asking for $12.95 to go away. You can register if you want to collect karma and win valuable flair that will appear next to your name, but otherwise, it's just free. And fast. Very, very fast.

The funny thing is that the Zygote article was published a week before the Smashing one. It might be a coincidence, but I have my doubts. Either way, they both have some great information on the [marketing] science of web design, unusual because 99% of design articles focus on the art of building a website. Both articles come together on the AIDA technique.

For 2008, instead of a downloadable (PDF) white paper, we decided to present our findings on the web. Which meant, in addition to compiling and analyzing data and reporting our findings with words and charts, we had to design a website and convert XHTML table data into clear and beauteous charts, via the magic of advanced CSS. ALA’s Jason Santa Maria designed the website. Eric A. Meyer visualized the charts and crafted the mind-bending CSS that brought them to life. (Geeks, view source and enjoy.) Others who worked on these findings include editor Krista Stevens and publisher Jeffrey Zeldman.

"I think Smashing should at least add your entry to the "read more" section at the top of their article. Anyway, keep up the good work with your new company. You've obviously got the talent."

"No problem, Joe. I'm sure you know this already, but Staction ain't like most the other Project Management tools out there, and that's a good thing. Thanks for the feeback, too (that's called good customer service, folks--take note:)"

Unfortunately, an ever-growing percentage of your readers are never going to see your code-wrangling handiwork, because they prefer to read articles through a feed reader like Google Reader or Bloglines. To make matters worse, you have almost no control over the way your posts will display across the various readers. You can’t use your in-site CSS styles, and – this is the biggest sin of all – images are often displayed inline with text.

Updated look and feel Google is all about speed, both under the hood as well as in the user experience. So, in order to make Reader act and feel more speedy and responsive, we've removed some visual clutter, simplified some features and given everything a bit more breathing room. Out with the old rounded corners, drop shadows and heavily saturated colors -- in with a softer palette, faster components and a fresh new look.
