A TIME-WARPED SEXIST ASSAULT - New York Post - http://www.nypost.com/seven...
@Brian As the son and son-in-law of "dutiful but professionally distant educators" as you coldly put it. I disagree with your statements and the implication that teachers are the ones raising your children. There are benefits and drawbacks to staying home, neither is the "right" choice. There can only be the right choice for your family. - David Knight
David, I'd have to categorically disagree with you. I don't slightly disagree, I emphatically disagree with every essence of your statement. Don't confuse your own defensiveness with the cold hard facts. Your kids, if you and their mother work full time outside the home, are not receiving the best they could from you. That's plain and simple. I have no intent on being hateful, mean, or disrespectful. But, let's be honest. - Trevor Carpenter
I agree the author's premise. But I'll also point out that John Edwards was criticized for remaining in a presidential bid despite his wife's cancer. I think that societal expectations of women remain unfair, but I think that societal expectations of men's responsibility to their families are changing as well. - Chuck LeDuc Díaz
Ok Trevor, let me address two points. First I will not apologize for blocking Trolls, political or otherwise, and if it's cowardly to not feed trolls then lets hope a huge wave of it breaks out. And on this thread you're all making narrow assumptions that I can't agree with. We sacrifice to send our son to a great daycare, there's no less love and you're an ass for suggesting it. Opening my son's life up to new people, wonderful teachers, and an environment of his peers is the best for choice for US. - David Knight
Wow! I got called a name. Now, who's the troll? I will say, blocking legitimate trolls is totally cool. I have no problem with that. However, blocking people who simply disagree with me, is lame and cowardly. That's why I won't block you, because we're having a real discussion/disagreement. Additionally, you can't even try to convince me that a paid employee is better for your child to spend their time with, instead of you or your wife. That's just not even an argument. That's just silly. - Trevor Carpenter
I have to agree that there is no replacement for the value of time spent with actual, loving parents. Yes, there is educational value of quality, professional institutions, but there is no substitute to the necessary nature of *both* parents. We are built to survive, so we grow despite what we may lack in our personal experience, but to suggest that it is the same is simply denial. - Jeremy Hall
BTW, when did I say anything about love? I'm talking about what's generally best... Additionally, I guarantee an audit of your personal choices and priorities would demonstrate areas where you could sacrifice even more to the benefit of your child(ren)/family. People have no idea what they could cut, to open up room. Our available time, "need" to have two incomes, and personal kingdom building has a massive effect on our "need" to outsource our kids. - Trevor Carpenter
@Tevor: "...cold hard facts. Your kids, if you and their mother work full time outside the home, are not receiving the best they could from you..." This is not a cold hard fact. This is constantly debated. - JP Landry
As a follow up, I don't suggest in any way to judge someone's approach to parenting. If you can find a way to have that quality time with children and have other professional (and other) pursuits in life, more power to you. There are only so many hours in the day though, so sacrifice takes place somewhere; you just choose where and who gets it. - Jeremy Hall
JP, just because a "debate" is occurring, doesn't mean it's being debated by balanced healthy people. Many of those same people are cool with "choosing" to kill their children, because it's inconvenient. So, if an inconvenient kid makes it past the "choice", then there's still a good chance that they'll get the shaft and be sentenced to years of childcare, when a few basic sacrifices would get them a parent at home to help care for them. - Trevor Carpenter
I am a stay at home mom and I am always worried about one thing. God forbid, what if something happens to my husband? I am well educated, have a good work history, but lets face it, I have been out of the workforce 2 and a half years. It just isn't that simple to jump back in. If I had chosen to work after I had the child I would know that I could support myself and him. Now I'm not so sure. - Michelle Martinez
I truly believe in my heart that I am doing the best thing I could for my child, but I am scared of the consequences should I lose hubby. - Michelle Martinez
Michelle, that's what a good insurance policy is for. Not to say that you don't have good insurance. However, you should find a good agent, who has access to a variety of programs and companies. They can help find your family a great policy, designed for families that make good sacrifices like us. God bless you for making the hard choices. - Trevor Carpenter
What about a single parent? I think you can safely say that they absolutely *can't* stay home. Or even in a two-parent household where neither parent makes much money and they need the combined income just to get by? - Nine
Ha! Good try, Lindsey. I'm sitting here, hanging with my wife and 4 kids. I squeeze FF in between kicking my son's butt on Lego Star Wars, right now. In about an hour, we're going to drive up the coast, to hit a not-so-local Trader Joe's, and then spend the afternoon together as a family, doing who knows what, just being together. My work as a cop gives me many days off, during the week. For that, I sacrifice job promotions and reassignments that would kill my schedule. - Trevor Carpenter
Lindsey, you're right about it depending on that "one income". Nine(9), you too are right to bring up the single parent issue. Of course, not everyone has, or can have the best case scenario. Brian's suggestion of work at home careers are an option for many. The problem is that many are too stuck on their existing career path, to consider that a different job might be better; because of scheduling or proximity to their home. - Trevor Carpenter
When we made the decision to stay home, we cut back like crazy. I clip coupons, we don't eat out as often, and we haven't had a new shiny piece of electronic equipment since the baby was born. I feel bad sometimes when I see friends that both work in their big house, new mac, and PS3. But, you have to do what you think is best. - Michelle Martinez
I don't think I'm better than them. I'm positive that they make other choices where I fail. However, to suggest that there can't be a best case scenario is what's silly. It's just that in this case, I do what it takes, to provide what is clearly best for my children. - Trevor Carpenter
That's what I'm talking about, Michelle. You do what it takes. But I'm sure that you have a connection with your child that many others don't. You are there when they walk first. You are there when they talk first. It's YOU that they run to for comfort. - Trevor Carpenter
Now, that's sound wisdom, Lindsey. Even with my strong opinions, I'd never once suggest taking anyone's freedom to have children. I'd fight for that right. I have fought for that right. Thank you for your "rant". - Trevor Carpenter
Part of it is personal responsibility - I work because I don't like the idea of being "dependent" on my husband. I earn half the income, I get to have a say in how half of it is used. And if something happens to him, I'm only half as bad off as I would be otherwise. Maybe my kid didn't get as much attention as he could have, but I grew up with a single parent and learned how to take care of and entertain MYSELF because of that (I think that's an important skill). I knew my mom loved me anyway. - Fa La La La Lindsay
Some people weren't made to stay at home... Some people don't define themselves only as a parent. Parenting is important but to be a healthy happy individual you have to purse other interests as well. - Fa La La La Lindsay
The decision to have children is of the utmost importance. A family MUST look at the effect it will have on their lives. They must be deciding that their legacy will be drastically different now. To not consider these things is quite selfish. To even have kids, and do it right, is the opposite of selfish. It's the end of your selfishness. The pursuit of "other interests" at the cost of one's family/children is outrageous. I'm not suggesting that we can't have extra-home interests. - Trevor Carpenter
and I'm with David and Lindsey - A.T.
Oh, and my wife and I both, as a team, decide how to use my paycheck. Just because it has my name on it, doesn't mean I get to decide how it's spent. - Trevor Carpenter
What gives any of us the right to decide what is best for other people? - Andy Roth
I'm sure you're only talking about issues like those discussed above, right Andy? Because, we have the rule of law, that decides a lot of things for us, under the pretense that it is "right". Sometimes those laws are over-reaching, but we would all agree that you're an idiot if you don't put your kid in a safety seat, when driving. So, we do have the right to decide what is best for other people and their kids, in some circumstances. Just a bit of perspective. We all just dont agree on where to put the line - Trevor Carpenter
Sorry folks. We're off for the day. I wish I could stay and chat some more... - Trevor Carpenter
Cleary we need laws to protect people from unsafe activity. You are right, Trevor, that is hard to know where to draw the line between a matter of safety and beliefs about what is best for a person in general. My point is that people should not try to impose their beliefs on others. You believe that it is best for a child to have a stay at home parent? Great, then you or your spouse figures out how one of you can stay home. But, don't be telling your neighbors that they should make the same decision. - Andy Roth
It goes beyond this issue. It seems there are many people these days vigorously pushing their personal beliefs on others. Don't think a person is qualified to be VP? Great - don't vote for her. (Hate to open this can of worms, but) You think gay marriage is an abomination? Great - don't marry a dude (or a woman if you are one). Just don't feel like you have some right or imperative to decide for other people. - Andy Roth
As I mentioned before (and I'm staying clear of most of the debate) I don't judge others' choices where possible. Where it does impact society and the burden we take on because of others choices, then it is ok to put out your opinion on the choices of others'. Not saying that every aspect of this debate falls under that umbrella, but the shift in where society goes from where we are today is important. That's all broad speaking of course, but it is an underlying point to this debate. It does matter. - Jeremy Hall
@brian I've stayed out of this largely because it deals with an area of utmost sensitivity for every parent: their kids. Like others my wife and I made sacrifices so that she could stay home when we had our son in April BUT I also believe that is not a decision every parent is able to make - i think many agree with your assertions but are less focused on whether right from wrong exists and more on the fact that many times life in an imperfect world only offers you good or better to choose from - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I'm going off the issue of staying at home or not and more to the sexism issue brought up in the article. I am not a fan of Palin so far in my research, but I would completely concur that she's been dealt a double standard that is obscuring the real issue of her being fit for the job of leading a nation. One heartbeat away and all that. - Boo

Swearing removed from kids' book
Asda (Wallmart) have sold 28,000 copies of this book, but have removed it based on ONE SINGLE complaint abour ONE swear word. That's kinda pathetic. - Chris Nixon from Bookmarklet
That word would never fly in the US, it's up there with the C* word. ;-) - cmiper
Yeah but it's only a word. They've only used it once. As long as kids are taught it not OK to use them in company, then surely that's OK. They'll hear much MUCH worse in the street or playground, and we happily send them there. Shakespeare uses the C* word in Twelfth Night, and yet that is taught in schools. - Chris Nixon
I must be really slow. I can't think of a word one letter different from twit that is considered a bad / swear / curse word. - JP Landry
twat - which by the way, when I was at school was the tamest of swear words...only one above twit. - Chris Nixon

Frankly, I've had enough of public stupidity and hysteria. If I'm taking pictures, examining benchmarks, or geocaching, inevitably, someone will start questioning me or calling the police. If I'm in a public area and not doing anything criminal, mind your own business. - Morton Fox
@Morton: "examining benchmarks" huh? - JP Landry
Aren't the TWIP guys coming out with a "Photography is Not a Crime" t-shirt soon? - Andy Roth
It's just a mock up so far. I took John Worthington's idea and whipped this up real quick last night. If TWiP does not make them, maybe I with John's approval/participation could have some made up and make them available to everyone who wants one for a reasonable cost. - Jeff P. Henderson

Other Guest at Biltmore: Y'now - you're not supposed to take photographs - the light from the flash destroys things. Me: I know, but I'm not using flash. Her: Well, it still destroys things.

It is funny how you can watch videos on youtube of people stealing bikes with John Q. Public not saying anything, and yet John Q. Public has no problem telling photographers about non-existent rules. - JP Landry

M.M.A.’s Macho Badge of Honor - Deformed Ears - NYTimes.com
"A deformity initiated by repetitive trauma, cauliflower ear can crumple an outer ear to a misshapen shell... Unfazed by the prospect of living life as a walking what’s-grosser-than-gross joke, a nationwide corps of professional fighters, amateur enthusiasts and teenagers have taken to leaving their ears untreated or self-treated, wearing their shriveled, hardened waxen auricles as badges of honor." - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
“They say, ‘Chicks dig that stuff because they know you’re a fighter.’ “ "A familiar chasm separates what women dig from what dudes imagine women dig." Imagine that! - Anne Bouey
Yah, that was on of my favorite lines in the article :) - Bret Taylor
I remember reading something Pete Townshend said once (very rough paraphrase): Most of traditional macho culture is actually gay culture. The symbols and social shorthand that "tough guys" affect are actually more attractive to other men than to women. They're so out of touch with the "otherness" of women that they have no clue. - Roger Benningfield
I was "lucky" enough to turn on CBS a couple months ago when they were airing the first ever prime time MMA fight on broadcast TV. I managed to look at the TV exactly when some dude's cauliflower ear exploded in to a nasty mess of blood and ear-juice. Thanks, CBS! - Patrick Lightbody from mioNews
Patrick, yeah I also watched that. That event was Elite XC. The fighter who had his cauliflower ear busted open by Kimbo Slice was James Thompson. - imabonehead
I love watching MMA, but when it comes to intelligence, MMA fighters are probably worse off than all other professional athletes. Cauliflower ears are like face tattoos... you WILL regret getting them when you get older. - JP Landry
If folks want to watch bloodsport why not just drop them over in Iraq for a while? That'll cure them. Deformed ears a badge of honor? Really, read that sentence again. No, it's another type of badge in my book. - AJ Kohn

Steam doesn’t offer a refund even if the software doesn’t work? - http://nerdflood.com/2008...
Yeah, I buy a lot of software off Steam, and while the vast majority of it works great one game did end up being a dud for me in the past. Sucks there are no returns; there should be some consideration for technical issues. - Evan Sims
The worst part is, I was planning to buy some more games off Steam. But I'm not going to bother if this is their policy. - Nathaniel Payne
If you think about it, their policy is no different than a retail store's policy. a retail store will not let you return software. - JP Landry
Oh you're quite right, JP, but it really doesn't need to follow the traditional retail store policy. Given the capacity for Steam to track usage they could very easily determine whether you're bullshitting them about it and just want your money back. Of course, they're a company, and it's in their interest to keep your money. - Evan Sims
If I buy any piece of software from a store - tax, productivity, garden planning, etc. - and it doesn't work properly, I'll bet I could get a refund if I called the company and complained. If I pay for something, and it doesn't work, I should be able to get a refund. Unfortunately, Steam doesn't appear to think so. - Nathaniel Payne
Steam is the software mafia and nobody says a thing because so long as you don't rock the boat, the system kinda works - Michael W. May
We use Steam and talk about it a lot. Let me know if you do get your refund or not, Nathaniel. Probably would be something we'll write about. - Candace
Oh, I seriously doubt I'll be getting a refund - at least, not from Steam. As I told my little example anecdote above, I realized that I shouldn't be asking Steam for a refund - I should be asking Infinite Interactive. Asking Steam for a refund is like asking Best Buy for a refund for non-functional tax software - not likely to happen. We'll see how far this goes. Maybe I'll forward this experience to Consumerist. ;) - Nathaniel Payne
Whoa, CRAZY! I sent Steam a follow-up message basically saying that their policy shouldn't apply to broken software and that I wouldn't be using Steam in the future. What do I receive less than a hour later? A message from Steam saying a full refund is currently processing. WOW! - Nathaniel Payne
Well done! Just shows what can be achieved in customer service when you actually get through to a real person. - David Young
Nathaniel, I'm glad you are getting your refund and while I pointed out earlier their policy isn't much different than a retail store that doesn't mean I agree with it. Having that said, I absolutely HATE "the squeaky wheel gets the oil" mentality and customer support. Everybody has to do it to get companies to do anything. It sucks. - JP Landry

I'll go back and buy it tomorrow. But I'm not kidding: the store got very nervous when I stuck my camerphone in their freezer. I took my shots and moved on. Maybe it was the lycra shorts. - Chris Baskind
Actually, Morningstar products taste really good -- I don't but it myself, but I have family who are vegetarians and they swear by this stuff. - Shey, Jamaican of FF

It's good stuff. We always have Morningstar Farms products on hand. Keep in mind that this is for vegetarians: if you eat real bacon every day, this stuff simply won't cut it. If you haven't had bacon in ten years, though, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Their breakfast sausage links, on the other hand, are almost spot on. - Akiva Moskovitz
Admit it, Chris, you just wanted to tell everyone on FF that you were wearing lycra shorts in the grocery store. - Trish R
I've been experimenting with these breakfast strips for a while now. We even tried "poaching" it in vegetable oil to give a baconey (is that a word?) flavor to items that we later sauteed in the oil. It's not bad, but it needs work. - ha3rvey (doesn't dance)
LOL @Trish. Morningstar + bacon salt = more bacony? - Hao Chen
Trish, I'm going to start leaving my helmet and sunglasses on in the store next. It's a sure way to remain undisturbed. ;-) - Chris Baskind
My wife made me try Morning Star "chicken(-like) patties". They were surprisingly good! I now take them in my lunch about once a week. I might just have to try this stuff. - Nathaniel Payne
My kids now prefer Boca or Morningstar burger patties to the real thing. I've had the faux sausage -- patties are the best, just don't overcook them. I think real bacon is disgusting, but I'll give this a try. - Chris Baskind
So...why did you take the picture? Just curious :) I love this stuff... then again, I don't really remember the taste of real bacon - so it's awesome to me!! - Sharon Rosen
Sham: 'cause it's bacon, and this is Sparta. Friendfeed, I mean. - Chris Baskind
My wife is a vegetarian, so we eat a fair amount of Morning Star, Boca, and local vegetarian products. having worked in both this seems wrong - nyc much more walkable than sf imho - mike "glemak" dunn
City comparisons - walkability, density, size, income - are always screwed up by the way some cities draw their city limits much more tightly than others. So whenever there's a list of cities sorted by any attribute that's going to vary depending on how many suburbs you include, the precise ranking is pretty much always bogus. Walk Score ratings are also arbitrary in about 10 other ways that make arguing about the scores of NYC vs. SF kind of pointless. - ⓞnor
New York's weather and crowds keep it from being enjoyable to walk. SF is a lot more walkable most days of the year. - Robert Scoble

How is it that more quality applications launched in one day for the iPhone than have ever been developed for WinMo? Is it more a function of the platform or the user base?
WinMo uses the PC application delivery model which doesn't work for phones. Apple's app store is a much better way to deliver content to phones. - JP Landry
Good point. I've used Handango's In-Hand, which provides over-the-air application delivery, but it certainly isn't as slick as the Apple solution (is anything as slick as the Apple solution?) - Brian Pharris
Lust. Desire. Sex appeal. - Louis Gray
Could you please back the implied assertion with an exact score or complete list from both platforms? - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I hate my WM Tilt. A phone is no longer just for making calls and sending text messages, it's use and worth come largely from the applications available for it. Trying to *find* WM apps requires far too much effort, let alone then discerning which apps are worth installing and which aren't. So many of them are poorly made and difficult to use (I would imagine because the experience is going to differ slightly from model to model). There is no central access point to find apps, let alone rate them. - Robert DeBord
WM has been around for a long time and yet no one has been able to organize anyplace where you can find a comprehensive listing of available apps and also where the users can review them. It's such a guessing game which means it's a huge waste of time. Most of the apps I've used on my 8125, 8525 and now my 8925 have been difficult to use and the entire experience has been anything but elegant. As soon as my concerns over the iPhone's battery life are taken care of I'll be very, very happily abandoning WM - Robert DeBord
Could be that there's a certain amount of quality control that goes into getting apps past Apple that you don't get in apps developed for other platforms. Not that there aren't a lot of clunkers in the app store already. - Judi Sohn
And MiniMage, your request spells out the problem with WM. Where can you find such a list? How could you even begin putting one together? It's such a mess there's no way to find and list them all because they're not in a centralized location. It's such a terrible experience for the user. - Robert DeBord
Apple's developer tools are much much better than what developers on other mobile platforms have to use. Apple does all of the hard stuff so that developers worry about the features of their application. - Albert Willis
Hmm, Stalin had a good way of centralizing things in one place too... I prefer to have more flexibility. But to the original assertion that there are more "quality" apps for iPhone than WM -- I think many people would disagree with this (myself included). - Alan Cheslow
@robertdebord: I know nothing about the iPhone store, but is there a list there that says which apps are quality and which are not? Judi has said there are some there that are "clunkers," so we can't assume, I think, that all iPhone apps are quality. I know there are several sites that sell WM apps from a gaggle of developers and that some developers sell their apps themselves, which... more... - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF from NoiseRiver
@MiniMage the App store has customer reviews built into it. If you buy an app you can comment on it to let other people know what you like/dislike about it. One thing I've seen in the past is when looking for reviews on a program for my WM phone I'll google it, find a bunch of links and then find that the "reviews" were paid for by the company that made the program. That's no good because I'm not really getting a review of the program and I don't really know whether it's a waste of my time to install. - Robert DeBord
And I'm not saying that all of the apps are fantastic. I don't have an iPhone so I haven't used the app store other than browsing it to see what apps are available. My point was that the user experience on finding programs for the iPhone is far better than finding them for a WM phone, since they're centralized and you have a wide variety of user reviews to help in deciding which apps are worth spending time on. I don't know that the iPhones apps are better than those for WM but... - Robert DeBord
it sure does seem easier to find apps for the iPhone and the entire experience from the user's end seems much more enjoyable. As for my comments on the WM programs... from my own experience they aren't great and typically they don't feel straight forward or easy to use. It's almost prohibitive to use some of them because you know how frustrating the experience will be before you even begin. - Robert DeBord
@Alan: what are some of the quality WM apps that you're thinking of? IMO, SPB Mobile Shell is stellar (and does a good job of bringing the WM UI up to par with the iPhone), and I've found Google Maps and Windows Live Search to both be impressive. Perhaps I'm just swooning over the newness of my recently-upgraded iPod Touch, but I haven't found many other WM apps that I've been that impressed with. - Brian Pharris
@Brian those are good, I also like PointUI, navizon, CQC, smartphlow, findme, social.fm, skyfire, bubbles, tinytwitter, last.fm, tcpmp, dashwire, also some other places to start -- http://tinyurl.com/6xga6c and http://tinyurl.com/6axaea - Alan Cheslow
@Alan thanks for the pointers. - Brian Pharris

iphone: one target. winmo: 2 platforms (smartphone and pocket pc), 3 aspect ratios (standard, wide, square), lores and hires (different dpis), 3 input styles (touch screen, keyboard, keypad), 3 different framework versions (1.0, 2.0, 3.5), a wide spread of general device performance from 200 mhz with slow memory to 500 mhz fast machines, radio speeds from none to 3g, an established global audience (just as many non-english as english, would guess that iphone is very us-centric right now). Dave Winer
Great post, Dave, but ask yourself this: might a neocon in phony progressive clothing be more dangerous than an overt neocon? Obama would have more political juice than McCain to press on with neocon schemes for Mideast military aggression and domestic police state programs. I no longer have any confidence in my understanding of who Obama really is. - Sean McBride
I have never seen a lucid explanation of why Obama voted this way. What does he hope to gain? - Brian Sullivan
Pretty sure he wanted to deny McC the ability to run an ad saying he's soft on terrorism. - Dave Winer
That sounds plausible - Brian Sullivan
The general consensus I've read is that now that Obama's facing the general election, he's playing toward the middle to get more votes. A lot of his hard-left progressive supporters are freaking out. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva -- the pro-FISA position is hard neocon right, not "the middle." Most Americans are disenchanted with and strongly oppose most neocon policies, including the Iraq War and the mad neocon scramble to expand the Iraq War to Iran. If Obama loses his base, the steam will go out of his campaign with a great rush. There are strong indications that this has already happened. (Hillary Clinton lost the nomination largely because she moved too far to the neocon right, under the prodding of Mark Penn.) - Sean McBride
People who see this as a right-left thing are not paying attention. The Constitution is what all Americans agree on, and it's what each of these people, Senators, Presidents etc, swear to uphold. It's an honor and trust thing in addition to being a freedom thing. Any conservative who isn't pissed off by this isn't actually a conservative at all. It's about the most conservative issue there is. - Dave Winer
@Akiva I agree, but now he has to contend with charged of being a flip flopper (and I personally see him as one now). He went from saying he would filibuster the bill to voting yes. @Tim I completely agree. Obama is just another crappy politician in my book now. - JP Landry
Obama sees three straight months of declining donations http://tinyurl.com/5dzuqm - Sean McBride
Democrats have been beat up on national security for so long that they seem to have internalized the criticism - kind of a political version of battered wife syndrome. Obama offers some improvement over this, but obviously he still believes this as well. In any case, Larry Lessig has the best breakdown of this that I've so far seen: http://lessig.org/blog... - Eric P
Dave is right. When I visited Washington DC I had both Democrats and Republicans say they supported FISA. Why? Because inside the beltway they are really freaked out about terrorists. Remember, Flight 93 was aimed at them. Listen to our interviews with Congressman John Culberson and you'll hear a pretty good defense of FISA. I'll go get you the URL. - Robert Scoble
Here's the Culberson interview, filmed by Andrew Feinberg: http://qik.com/video/112754 -- I'll try to find the place where he talked about FISA. - Robert Scoble
Well said Dave. - Tsega Dinka

Must read in Salon: http://tinyurl.com/6kgs48 "But was Obama's position on FISA really a matter of political calculation? If so, he needs to check his math. By almost any measure, political passions on this issue are heavily concentrated among the FISA bill's opponents. There was no real voter pressure on Obama to support the bill. Public opinion polls have consistently shown the bill... more... - Sean McBride
In a word ; disappointment I was stunned on how little this got covered. Passing that act was an historic embarrassment to our beautiful idea of an nation. - mediaeater
Sean, exactly -- that's why I said it was a fight he should have welcomed. Finally an election issue that's worth debating, not just in stupid ads, but among the electorate. Let's have a referendum on whether we believe in the Constitution. - Dave Winer
Even Hillary voted against it. I, too, am disappointed in Obama. - Doug Kaye
He starts getting interesting at about 13 minutes left in the conversation. Says he wants government out of our lives. At 7 minutes left in the conversation he says he looked to what Matt Thornberry told him. You really should listen to this video at this point. - Robert Scoble

Dave, yes -- what is so disappointing about this is that Obama missed a golden opportunity to cement his reputation as a candidate with strong principles and backbone. His campaign would have been elevated and energized by doing the right thing. Instead, now survey the ruin among his base and his declining contributions. (Btw, I define myself as a "progressive libertarian" -- I support... more... - Sean McBride
As a longtime McCain supporter (and supporter of this tremendously unpopular surveillance program), its interesting to see the disappointment and disenfranchisement people feel over Obama's position. I understand that most people here disagree with both myself and Obama on this matter, and that's fine. But I think its pretty naive to expect a politician (and make no mistake, Obama is and always has been a consummate politician) to not do something like this. (cont'd) - Curtis Schweitzer
(cont'd from above) People on the right have long been making the case that, based on his past, Obama is not an "agent of change" and that his image as a political outsider isn't based in reality. This, I think, proves that point. Perhaps its politically unwise for me, a McCain supporter to say this, but maybe a better route is not to stop supporting Obama financially, but rather to try to change his mind, even after the fact. (cont'd) - Curtis Schweitzer
The latest poll which came out today shows that McCain and Obama are now within 3 points of each other, and that Obama lost something like 12 points. The only explanation I have for this is his vote on FISA. Why did he vote yes on this when he could have just abstained? I believe that he thinks with all the problems the US is confronting and all the reforms he wants to do, he needs all the executive power he can get. This is not about liberal/conservative, it's about concentration of power. - Paul Denlinger
(cont'd from above) What is most certainly unwise is pretending that Obama is somehow "above" the political process or that he really means what he says about reforming it. Because he isn't above it, and he can't possibly follow through on his promises of reform. And that's ok. He's a politician that you agree with on most things-- it is unrealistic and frankly a little thickheaded to cease supporting him simply because of a disagreement. He's going to do what it takes to get elected, and sometimes (cont'd) - Curtis Schweitzer
(cont'd from above)...sometimes that means doing things that you may not agree with. It will happen. (McCain and I disagree on a great many number of things, but that doesn't mean I will stop donating to his campaign). So keep donating to the causes you believe in, and fight even those politicians you support when you think they're wrong. That's what the American political process is all about. - Curtis Schweitzer
I'm not so disturbed nor so fickle. 1. Obama voted to amend the immunity out of the bill. They couldn't get the votes, which means they couldn't over-ride a promised veto either. 2. Other parts of the bill put in restraints that are important to have, and Bush had promised to sign it. 3: A parliamentary device is important - only those on the prevailing side can introduce... more... - Dennis E. Hamilton from twhirl
@Dennis: +5. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Politics is not about perfection. Work to change your candidate's platform, not against your candidate. Seriously folks, you have friends, family and spouses who do things you don't agree with but we don't cut ourselves off from them or file for a divorce. - AJ Kohn
I don't see what the big deal is about telecom immunity. You can't ask a public company to say no to the NSA, it'd be a moral victory which they wouldn't be able to tell anyone about because of the secrecy involved and a potential hassle with the federal government. No upside, only downside. AT&T shouldn't have been asked to do it at all, which is what the FISA bill is about. - Nicholas Molnar
Here's the rub: Congress is totally freaking worthless and has been for a few decades now. It's a total fire sale and the highest bidder runs the country for awhile. If you hate Bush, then you haven't been paying attention to what the Congress has been doing for the past 20+ years (R's and D's, doesn't matter). Anyone who thinks that voting a senator into the White House will solve anything is fooling themselves. They're the ones responsible for the sorry state of things! Throw the bums out! - Chad Myers
Just a comment on the "even Hillary voted against it" thing. Clinton is no longer running for president. I seriously doubt she would have voted against the bill if she was the candidate. - Didi Chanoch
Maybe he's just another triangulating Slick Willie. But he's quite correct. The Left will vote for him anyway. And I'll take a Slick Willie over the neocons any day. Sigh. - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Well said Mr. Winer - I still can believe Sullivan's altogether lazie-fair attitude towards all of this. Surprising to say the least. - Will DeLuca
Good comments above. One point that was missed was that you need to differentiate between conservatives (think Goldwater) and neoconservatives (think GW Bush). - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
Ontario Emperor: neoconservatives are anti-conservative, anti-liberal, anti-libertarian and anti-American (thus the assault on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights). They are a strange mix of Trotskyism and Judeo-Christian fascism and have glommed on to the conservative movement and turned it upside down and inside out. They are operating out of the 20th century authoritarian/totalitarian tradition. - Sean McBride
Ontario Emperor & Sean McBride: both great comments. It's sad that this distinction isn't made more publicly. - Zach Underwood
It's sad to see any politician or elected official sell our freedoms for any reason. It especially hurts when you see someone, like Obama, profess change and professing to being of the people, "change" his message. - Dennis Hays
With one exception, the FISA compromise does what Democrats wanted, and what most people thought the law was and should be. Telecom immunity was a tough sell, and it seems pretty understandable the Obama ultimately was not willing to kill the bill for it. I thought his explanation: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/barack-... captured the issues fairly well. - Kevin Miller
But there's a larger issue. It's hard for me to reconcile the Dave Winer who wrote this: http://www.scripting.com/davenet... with the one who wrote the post here. Politicians make shitty software, too, and it's equally as immature to ascribe evil purposes to Obama as to those who write software with bugs in it. Taken in full, Obama is the most promising politician in a generation, and this is a moment when we need every bit of political skill he can bring to the table. - Kevin Miller
Dave, I agree with you about FISA. It feels like the wrong decision by Obama. It also feels wrong that you would stop $$ support based on the FISA decsion. Assuming $$ is important to Obama's campaign your decision makes it more likely that McCain is elected. Regardless of the FISA vote, is that what you want? - Linc Holland
Linc and Kevin: Obama's base is sending him a powerful message: if you deviate too much from the positions you claimed to hold before being nominated, if you morph into a Joseph Lieberman clone, we will pull the rug out from under you so fast that it will make your head spin. Isn't that a message that Obama needs to hear loud and clear? - Sean McBride
Sean: I agree that that's a good message to send. But do you really see Obama morphing into a Joe Lieberman clone? I don't think that's what's going on here. He accepted a compromise that many of us wouldn't have. Maybe I wouldn't have, either. But once the House passed this new compromise, it was either going to be this bill or nothing, and I can understand that decision. - Kevin Miller
Kevin - I am still holding out hope that Obama will remain true to most of the policy positions he espoused this last spring. I don't think it does any harm to remind him and his top advisers that his base is paying very close attention to these matters. (And there is no conceivable way that I could vote for John McCain.) - Sean McBride
If you read Obama's policy statements from before he won the primaries you'll see he hasn't really changed his position at all. He was always further to the right than Hillary Clinton on issues such as energy, climate change, universal health care. - Paul Guinnessy

MGM's buffet was a disappointment.
I shot the MGM weekend before last. I think it's the best hotel/casino in Vegas to shoot at present. Got some really great silhouette shots of my wife behind some red film glass at the West Wing bar there. - Thomas Hawk

You know, JP, I didn't even bring my tripod this year. I brought it on my last two trips to Vegas and never used it. There are certainly time delayed exposures to be made in Vegas, it just seems like there is so much else to compete with making those shots though. Certainly the lighting is bright enough almost anywhere in Vegas at night to shoot hand held using fast lenses. Someday I'll do some streaming light shots with my tripod in Vegas. Just not this trip. - Thomas Hawk
