I'm thinking of reasons why I should keep my Xbox. Not happy with my recent RROD, not happy with paying MS 30£ each year just to play on their network, and not happy with the fact that it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

My question is, how does the size of the new PS3-Slim compare to Xbox 360? Ditto on the vacuum-cleaner issue btw, which is one of the things that keep me from using it for any media (audio/video streaming, etc.)

Exactly. I can't use the Xbox for it's media capabilities purely because of the noise issue. Most of the games that I play come out on both platforms anyway....

That "34% less electricity used" stat that this new one sports also indicates that the components probably generate significantly less heat, so I assume the ventilation needs aren't as high as PS3fat.

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.

I would think a Lite version without the RSS feature might get more people to bite on the full version. You could also argue that $0.99 is the magical price for apps, especially for early adopters. It would be interesting to see if they get more downloads and more money for a $0.99 app versus the $1.99 app. It may look like splitting hairs, but I think it makes a difference.

You've gotta be kidding me. The game 1vs100 doesn't cost anything, why are ads suddenly a terrible thing? You get commercial breaks on cable TV, do you cancel? If the game is no extra cost, I have absolutely no problem with the ads. Walk away and do something else for 30 second, or better yet, don't play, if they're such a problem. The ads jeffscott is talking about are completely different, they're within the menu and I've never seen one on mine so far, only in that youtube video.

I often times forget that my 360 elite even plays games. I think I have spent a combined total of maybe 2-3 hours actually playing games on my 360. I just use it as a media center for my living room.

I can't speak on XBox, but I love my PS3. it has the games that I like to play, plus Bluray (which is why I haven't bought a player yet), wifi and it connects to my media server so I can watch movies over the network.

LPH -- it is real-time powered blog search based on keywords, not sources. You want it.

BEX, LPH, I've only played with it a little. By adding some of your own feeds of your choice (I added Twitter and delicious) it looks at your tags and hashtags and shows you related content. You can also add any tags representing any topic you might be interested in. It's a little hard to explain beyond that, but it has a very simple interface that encourages serendipitous discovery of content on specific topics. I like it!

it's all about tags. So, for instance, it doesn't bring in all my tweets, only those that I used a hashtag in. And the main "point" of bringing that in is to surface the fact that I might be interested in that tag and might want to see other items from all across lazyfeed with that same tag.

I tried it out. I have a more universal stuff finder thanks to zemanta and google search. It even comes up with contextual advertising. It's getting packaged into something distributable since Google and Twitter aren't necessarily interested in working together

The more I use this, I'm finding that it seems to be scraping a number of, well - 'questionable' sources for content. I'm hoping that they'll allow users to remove sources, vote things down, etc. in some fashion as things develop. It's a nice concept, but it definitely needs some serious refinement.

It's not the fabled GSM Pre, but PreCentral forum member Cleanser has apparently managed to unlock his Pre's CDMA radio and get voice and SMS service on Verizon -- data's still a no-go, but he's working on it. Other devices have been flashed between the networks for years, so we've no doubt that this is possible, but we doubt it'll ever be super-easy -- according to Cleanser, the hardest part was getting someone to add his device's MEID to the system, and that's always gonna be tough, regardless of VZW's big talk about open network access.
