Good idea about the unfollow. It was an interesting experiment whilst it lasted but given your lifestyle I'm sure most Twitter messages just passed you by. I never DM'd you however, it was nice to think that I had the option if I wanted to. Anyway I've been on FF for ages now, and what I need is a good FF app (for pc), any ideas anyone?

It's very interesting. Both news anchors agreed they preferred Facebook. Twitter is easier to use on the face of it but the rewards of Twitter are much more difficult to perceive.

I don't believe the average user comprehends that Twitter goes beyond simple "status updates" and goes into conversations. This is evidenced by the commenting on Facebook status updates - the large percentage of Facebook users use status updates for that purpose exclusively, and don't really see the value or usefulness on commenting or having a conversation on what people update on Facebook.

Facebook is not that popular here in the Philippines, Friendster is. But I have the impression that our corner of the globe was not represented well in those studies that say Twitter has a low retention rate. Unless I'm wrong. Lastly, Plurk is more popular than Twitter among Filipinos.

Because they don't hit the follow threshold that gets them enough interaction to demonstrate what Twitter offers. Twitter should have an intro page that describes how to reach that sweet spot. When I originally signed up, I didn't get it at all and my account was fallow for a year at least. Then I gave it another chance after reading more about the service. I'm glad I did.

But the way twitter handles conversations is not that great ( from a UI point ). Having comments under the fb status allows the users to keep track of what you were talking about. If im not mistaken tweetie for mac handles that

Geeks aside, people tend to go where their friends are currently. I think we just view the world differently then the general population. We try to find the next cool and innovative thing, whereas they just follow their friends around from one service to another. A services worth to them is directly tied into how many of their friends are currently using it. Us geeks move from one service to another at an accelerated rate when compared to the general population.

Simple. Twitter is a tool for the tech-savvy/digerati. People are still just getting their head wrapped around Facebook at this point (most of them still use MySpace). Look at the percentage of the population who still use dialup or AOL. There is a huge amount of people online that are severely behind the curve. Maybe it's because Oprah gets 700k followers overnight, and hardcore twits spend over a year and don't come close. When the system is rigged *and* people are just learning to understand the medium, people flee.

If after a couple days there isn't some strong compelling reason to maintain their presence they move on. PPL are A.D.H.D with networking. Unless they get an immediate high, they're gone. Look, I joined twitter in Feb. of 07. After a few months I left because I didn't feel community. I eventually came back because my people had moved to it. You go where you feel comfortable.

If you are a Facebook user coming to Twitter it won't make a lot of sense. Twitter is a stream is what is happening at the moment, not a cluttered mess of embarrassing party photos (aka FB). Twitter's temporal nature is fundamentally different so I think many of the new users are flocking over simply because some big names are there but don't grasp the temporal "what is happening at this moment" nature of Twitter. Like the spoken word you say something and then it’s gone in the Ether (hopefully).

It's a mistake to call many of these people "users" in the first place. People just want to come by, kick the tires, see what the fuss is about, and perhaps grab their user name if they're particularly savvy. It's the Twitter equivalent of "shopping cart abandonment", or not converting your "N-day Free Trial" over to a paid membership.

On Twitter, it's possible to build a community around an idea, and have an ongoing conversation that people can hop in and out of. The more you know about how to use Twitter, the more useful it becomes. For instance, I host Gratitude Gatherings monthly on the 2nd Sunday, and myself and may Twitter friends post daily #gratitude shout outs. It's a way to stay motivated, and connected at the same time. People don't stick around because they don't find the benefit quickly enough.

Leo, be sure to address the measurement issue! The Nielsen study only measured visits to twitter.com, excluding people using third party apps. Therefore, it's hard to tell whether the retention rate stats are accurate. But if they are, I suspect that it's the low amount of content vs. other services.

Cyndi: I would say quite the opposite is true. So-called 'experts' in media are those who are typically shied away from. Nobody believes there are experts anymore. If you call yourself an expert most will turn off.

For the majority of the population Twitter is a cute idea, but when the reality of regular updating sinks in, teamed with not having enough friends also on Twitter responding, they fall off. The stayers are people who use Twitter as part of a bigger picture, whether it's marketing, business etc

Still hard for regular Joe to understand who to follow. Especially someone you are interested in. Then its difficult for people to take the leap and to contribute if you are not used to being out there in the public internet space. Facebook is private and a closed community of your friends, and so people are much more confortable contributing within the closed community. Twitter is more like taking a leap outside your private space and putting yourself out there.

adam, I beg to differ. 140# is a challenge. being selective and self editing does require intelligence. I'm not saying microblogging is the only intelligent SM solution, but in the context of retention rates Twitter requires more from its successful users than other SNs
