About to read Cameron's 2008 chapter titled, "A process for changing organizational culture." It's only 16 pages long. I'm glad changing culture is so easy!
Just finished my schtick about the library at adjunct faculty orientation. I turned on the lights, started asking them questions, and made bad jokes. They might have been nodding off before, but they aren't now!
Excellent. I love it when a plan comes together. Mega-kudos for engaging your audience!
- LibrarianOnTheLoose
Not so much with the planning, more about looking people in the eye and having a conversation, and a little fun :)

I can just see it - 3 hours in the dark with power point slides? You are the hero. (Also, terrible faculty development design; faculty prefer to do the talking whenever possible.)
- barbara fister
...I dunno, turnabout seems like it ought to be fair play in this situation. (Just kidding: bad pedagogy is bad pedagogy, no matter whose butts are in the seats.)
- Catherine Pellegrino
We used to have a good new fac orientation that had the attendees rotating between three locations in the library and doing more discussion and meeting people. Now they compressed it into a half day and it's just a series of 10-15 minute presentations and I think it sucks. Good for you for livening it up!
- kaijsa
I wish I could get the folks who schedule adjunct orientation to remember to invite me more than 15 minutes before it starts. *sigh*

Your people need an intervention. Sheesh.

Char Booth, and Deb Gilchrist both reinforce my fan-girl-dom this week. I am a seriously recalcitrant fan-girl, which just goes to show how awesome they are.
- lris
Char Booth's visualizing departments and interventions, and Gilchrist's space-planning-based-on-philosophy changed my vision of liaison librarianship.
- lris
Now I don't feel so bad for peer-pressuring you into sitting at the front of the room for Deb's panel. I know I stole you away from Meredith. #winning
- kaijsa
I need someone to change my vision of liaison librarianship. [edit: that someone is probably me.]
- Steele Lawman
I don't think I've ever been to so many inspiring sessions as I enjoyed at this ACRL. And yet, Lily wins as a highlight. *massive hug*
- lris
Geez, that's high praise...but if that conference was any indication, I really like this whole "professional development" thing. (Also huge hug back.)

Went to the opening of the "Juried Student Exhibit" at the UW. Daughter's paintings were there big as life. Unfortunately, they misspelled her last name on the little card next to the artwork. (On the same order as identifying a Hapsburg as a Hansberg.) But that was all just so much noise when they announced scholarships... AND SHE GOT ONE! WOOT!
Honestly, I'm not bragging, but I'm just so happy for her. She's been working so hard and really needed this recognition of her efforts. I'm really glad that I could be there with her.

And afterward as I was telling her how happy and proud I was, she casually says "Yeah, I got one for German, too." As if it were just another piece of everyday news. When I think back to the scholarships I got in college, I don't have to think very long... BECAUSE I NEVER GOT ONE!

"An innovator in the midst of reactive or harmonizing people will find it virtually impossible to get even an audience much less a commitment to new ways of doing things." - Edgar Schein
I just CRUSHED my presentation at work. I've been feeling a little less than stellar and like an awful librarian of late, but maybe this is the start of some new life. And if I can't do the work that I'd like to do here, then I'll just take myself on elsewhere.
You know, the managers among us like to grumble "sometimes the problem is the employee" when we're frustrated, but the converse is true far more often, in my experience: Sometimes the problem is the workplace. If you can't be awesome there, and you can't find a way to make the place be awesome, find somewhere else to be awesome. :)

I've been wringing my hands and rocking back and forth thinking, "What can I do, what can I do?" with "One Day More" from Les Miz playing in the background for too long. I'll probably still be in my funk, but at least I'll feel a little more confident about strutting my skills on for someone somewhere else.
