"Boat owners are abandoning ship. They often sandpaper over the names and file off the registry numbers, doing their best to render the boats, and themselves, untraceable. Then they casually ditch the vessels in the middle of busy harbors, beach them at low tide on the banks of creeks or occasionally scuttle them outright. The bad economy is creating a flotilla of forsaken boats. While there is no national census of abandoned boats, officials in coastal states are worried the problem will only grow worse as unemployment and financial stress continue to rise. Several states are even drafting laws against derelicts and say they are aggressively starting to pursue delinquent owners. “Our waters have become dumping grounds,” said Maj. Paul R. Ouellette of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “It’s got to the point where something has to be done.”"

"When Brian A. Lewis of Seattle tried to sell his boat, Jubilee, no one would pay his asking price of $28,500. Mr. Lewis told the police that maintaining the boat caused “extreme anxiety,” which led him to him drill a two-inch hole in Jubilee’s hull last March. The boat sank in Puget Sound, and Mr. Lewis told his insurance company it was an accident. His scheme came undone when the...

"Now they are proliferating. Crab Bank, a protected bird rookery in the harbor within sight of Fort Sumter, is home to a dozen derelicts — two sunken, two beached, the other eight still afloat. They range from houseboats to a two-masted sailboat. State officers have placed placards on each, warning that the vessels have been identified as abandoned. Thanks to a local ordinance sponsored...

"It could be the ultimate "dream cream" – moisturiser containing Viagra. But, gentlemen, before you get carried away, be aware that the synthesis of lubricant and the popular erectile dysfunction medicine is not intended as a sex aid; instead it is being proposed for women as a treatment for cellulite. The drug sildenafil, sold most famously under the brand name Viagra, has had mixed success as a drug for women, but Croatian researchers are hoping that incorporating the stuff into a moisturiser could open up a whole new market. Beneath the skin surface is a layer of fatty tissue that is thicker in women with cellulite than those without. The distinctive "orange peel" dimpling pattern associated with cellulite comes from this fat layer and an irregular layer of collagen beneath the skin."

"Spring is here and with it come the woes of hay fever. Never fear, however, as there may be a quick and pleasurable treatment to clear those bunged noses, for guys at least – a well-timed ejaculation. That's what Sina Zarrintan, a neurologist from the Tabriz Medical University in Iran proposes, anyway. The logic behind the proposal is based on the fact that the nose and the genitals are both connected to the same part of the nervous system that controls certain reflexes – the sympathetic nervous system. A blocked nose is caused by swollen and inflamed nasal blood vessels, irritated by an infection or pollen in the air. But during ejaculation, the sympathetic nervous system constricts blood vessels across the body. That should soothe the swollen nasal blood vessels, freeing the airway for normal breathing, according to Zarrintan."

Hmmm... maybe it's my squirreliness, but I think grapefruit are both easy to eat and tasty. Mmmmmm...
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
I can't stand grapefruit. It might be the only fruit i've ever tasted that i can't eat.
- ·[▪_▪]·
That's too funny. It would be great to see some sort of mashup of everyone's take on that chart. I happen to love grapefruit and find plums far too messy to bother with. This humourous chart could also work well with all sorts of items. What about usability and information as the axis and then throwing on twitter, FF, IM clients, etc?

Oranges should be at the top of the Y axis. X axis is accurate.
- michael brashier
@txsean i think i have tried those. I've tried supposedly "different" grapefruit and they all have a similar disgusting aftertaste to me.

Alt Text: "Coconuts are so far down to the left they couldn't be fit on the chart. Ever spent half an hour trying to open a coconut with a rock? Fuck coconuts."
- Tim Hoeck
Ever tasted or smelled Jackfruit? That has to be the at the bottom of the pit of tasty.

Durian. So far off the chart that if the chart is on your computer in your living room, the durian is on the exact opposite side of the earth.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Durians truly stink. However, citrus fruit of most all kinds except for those easy-peel clementines or satsumas, are just messy. Period.
- Ian May
True, Ian, but getting into a durian is similar to getting into a coconut: it practically requires a wood splitter and a mallet. All that work just to release that stench.

grapefruit is nearly $3 now at my local grocer so yea, eff grapefruit
- Cee Bee
Grapefruit is not my friend. Can't eat it because of my meds (Lipitor). So, BOO grapefruit!

Keep an eye on Warren Buffett. His BH sub no longer offering insurance to the bankers that need coverage over 100k for their whales (the fdic only covers up to 100k on each account). His folks are saying it's because they are not able to obtain re-insurance on favorable terms. Hint: BH also owns a re-insurance company. In the case of BH, the left hand knows what the left and the right hand are doing. Not a good indication.

WOW, this is serious!! WTH?!! is going on?! We couldn't log into our bank tonight (HSBC) weird stuff going on

really and what happens to all those people suckered in by their TV ads aimed at the older folks .. are those policies they paid for now toast?. funny how the discussion is on how this is going to affect the rich who invested in the company but not the people who are going to possibly really be affected by this ... no surprise there really
- Steven Hodson
@Steven: I don't know who's talking about the rich - this is going to affect *everyone*.
- AJ Kohn
The financial system meltdown is getting worse by the hour!
- Muthu Ramadoss
@AJ just look at the conversation here in this thread .. where is there a single mention about the people who actually bought policies in their life insurance business ... has anyone even mentioned that these people could now be without that life insurance - people who typically in the 50 to 70 year old market and counting on that money to help through a very trying and expensive time - and now its gone .. that is what isn't being talked about
- Steven Hodson
This is bad but it had to happen. These bad mortgages have to be written off and there's only one way that's going to happen.
- Rob Sterling
@Steven: I don't think it's being discussed here specifically but I think (hope) that everyone has that in the back of their minds. I know it's in mine.
- AJ Kohn
I hate how all you insensitive asses from Silicon Valley treat the rest of the country when they are in a crisis, and it becomes a mere laff riot, an opportunity to hector people about bad debts, and a mere stock loss. You should think of all the loss of livlihoods happening here to people who are not to blame directly. Shame on you.
- Prokofy Neva
@prokofy - Very few jokes here, if any. Even so, everyone handles times like these in a different manner (some choose to joke, some choose to criticize other people's behavior). And not everyone on FF is from Silicon Valley...
