“The original Gauntlet was released with no ending. The hundred or so levels were randomised and looped for as long as play lasted. Atari saw Gauntlet as a process, a game that was played for its own sake and not to reach completion. The adventurers continue forever until their life drains out, their quest ultimately hopeless.” – Gamasutra.com

If anyone wants to give me $5000 for this outfit (because that's how much it costs) I'll rock it across the midwest and bring this into style.

As you all may know, I watched and posted my lecture notes of the whole MIT Introduction to Algorithms course. In this post I want to summarize all the topics that were covered in the lectures and point out some of the most interesting things in them. Actually, before I wrote this article, I had started writing an article called “The coolest things that I learned from MIT’s Introduction to Algorithms” but quickly did I realize that what I was doing was listing the topics in each article and not really pointing out the coolest things. Therefore I decided to write a summary article first (I had promised to do so), and only then write an article on really the most exciting topics. Talking about the summary, I watched a total of 23 lectures and it resulted in 14 blog posts. It took nearly a year to publish them here. The first blog post in this series was written in August 2008, and the last in July 2009.

I know I am not alone in my love/hate relationship for Google’s apps, the functionality is brilliant but the UI is ugly. Google Calendar is most definitely not the exception to the rule, it hurts my eyes. Helvetical extends the work done by Jon Hicks on Helvetireader, turning the mayhem of the Google interface into something that doesn’t offend. It was created for use with Fluid.app but I’m sure you can hack the CSS to work for your needs. Please note that this is an on-going project so things are a bit rough around the edges. I hope to update soon.

Computer Science is facing a major roadblock to further research. The problem is most evident with students, but afflicts many researchers as well: people simply have a tough time inventing research topics that sound sufficiently profound and exciting. Many PhD students waste needless years simply coming up with a thesis topic. And researchers often resort to reading documents from government grant agencies so they will know what to work on for the next proposal! Good news for the CS community: the problem has at last been solved. The table below provides the answer.

“Huge success” is a pretty vague term, and we’re not going to leave you hanging. The purpose of this post is to share the data we’ve collected during the experiment, not do draw conclusions. This is just one data point about how this kind of pricing methodology can work, and we would need other developers to try it with different games and under different circumstances in order to be able to draw any real conclusions. One thing we can say for sure, is that a large reason this experiment generated so many sales, is the huge amount of press and blog coverage it got. We want to thank everyone who bought the game in the last week, and everyone who helped spread the word!

Neuroanthropology places the brain and nervous system at the center of discussions about human nature, recognizing that much of what makes us distinctive inheres in the size, specialization, and dynamic openness of the human nervous system. By starting with neural physiology and its variability, neuroanthropology situates itself from the beginning in the interaction of nature and culture, the inextricable interweaving of developmental unfolding and evolutionary endowment.

The company is also planning to add a lot more services to its apps—a recommendations engine, a way to let you share your musical tastes with your friends, and charts that show the songs that people are searching for. Every Monday, Shazam sends out its charts to record labels, and execs have been known to sign artists based on the data. This has led to a new way for artists to break into the mainstream: getting featured in TV ads. In 2005, for instance, Volkswagen ran an ad in Europe for the Golf GTI that featured a remixed version of "Singin' in the Rain" by Mint Royale. The song inspired a lot of searching on Shazam—and prompted the band's label to release the track, which then shot to the top of the European charts. "We probably see that at least once a month around the world," Fisher says. In other words, Shazam doesn't only help an audience find music. Sometimes it helps music find an audience.

The work is an investigation into the effects of low frequency sound and infrasound via the design and construction of experimental acoustic emitters. Once installed in a particular space the work will have a profound effect on the surrounding sonic environment and the physiology of human subjects present. This is achieved by the resonant interactions between the subject’s body and the acoustic space.

The affections of a woman have to be won through the peacock dance of success and refinement, or through the deceit of lies. And then sustained for years through many strange virtues, or more lies. The price of love, above all, is monogamy. One man decided to break free. And he slept with over 1,300 women paying them over £115,000. This is his story.
