For Former Google Employees, Start-Ups Are a Family Affair - NYTimes.com
November 13 at 12:33 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Many of the Xooglers (the name is a contraction of ex-Googlers but is pronounced “zooglers”) are young, entrepreneurial and, thanks to Google’s soaring success, wealthy enough to start their own second acts. Some are starting companies in Silicon Valley and beyond, and others are helping to finance those ventures." - Atul Arora via Bookmarklet
"Google is rewriting the rules and accelerating the pace. Only time will tell if the Xooglers’ start-ups will achieve the success of the most notable Silicon Valley alumni network, PayPal. After eBay acquired PayPal, founders and employees went on to start LinkedIn, YouTube, Slide, Yelp and Founders Fund." - Chris White
Maybe some people think PayPal is the most prolific alumni network, but I think history says Apple would easily rival that. (e.g. NeXT, General Magic, PageMill, VeriSign, WebTV, Pixo, Danger, and Android, just off the top of my head). - Chris White
Nice mention of FriendFeed - "FriendFeed is perhaps the best example of the network in action. Bret Taylor left Google with his colleague Jim Norris, and they became entrepreneurs-in-residence at Benchmark Capital, a venture capital firm. While seeking financing for FriendFeed, they pitched their idea to Paul Buchheit and Sanjeev Singh, two Xooglers-turned-angel investors, who had worked on Gmail. They were so impressed that they invested in and joined the company. FriendFeed’s first $5 million came mostly from Mr. Buchheit and Mr. Singh." - Atul Arora
A great quote from Dominic: "“Google is the most nimble, most malleable 20,000-person company out there, but it still is a 20,000-person company." - Jess Lee
Prolific alumni network? How about Oracle? - Julio F ~ @SocialJulio
Silicon Valley's most important alumni network was Fairfield Semiconductor -- out of which came Intel, AMD, National, LSI Logic and basically every other semiconductor company in the Valley not named Hewlett Packard. One exec, Robert Noyce, mentored Steve Jobs when he founded Apple. Other notable Fairchild alum also included Eugene Kleiner, who founded Kleiner Perkins and Don Valentine, who founded Sequoia Capital. - Bryan Power

Intel's Nehalem (Core i7, if you prefer the official brand name) has been one of the most-anticipated computer products of 2008 and, as of this morning... it's still one of the most anticipated products of 2008. Intel isn't launching the Core i7 yet—that will come later this month—but the company is allowing online and print publications to give a prelaunch look at the chip's performance. Those of you with significant others might actually find this is something of a boon, as it gives you plenty of time to come up with a reason why she should want a faster computer this Christmas. - Leo Laporte

I'm not kosher, but I'm serious about the difference with kosher chicken... we have a shortage of kosher meat in upstate new york. We were always buying bel and evans chicken when the kosher stuff was gone. we just started ordering our kosher chickens to the house. I can't tell you why... it makes no sense at all... but kosher chicken just makes better chicken soup. it is that salt probably. but I'm not sure. Dealextreme has knockoff iPhones all the time. Not sure if they're dual SIM but my memory is they fetch about $120ish plus a few dollars shipping (which is super fast). I can't vouch for whether they actually work. I think the $199 price for an 8GB iPhone takes a lot of the wind out of the sales of the these fakes. - Wayne Schulz

Weird, I can't upload to Kyte.tv from China but Viddler worked fine. This is just one video I shot at the end of the line where they test thousands of drives using tons of these robotic testers. - Robert Scoble
This video is at the end of the line. We shot the other parts on HD so we have to edit those together and upload them after we get home in a couple of weeks. - Robert Scoble
"We still need a human part of it." Explaining why they couldn't automate the end of the line where final Q&A check is. "Human can be upgraded very fast," was the quote on the video. Another line I like is "Seagate workers are well grounded." Each one is grounded twice: once through their special shoes the conductive floor they are on and a second time through a strap that hooks onto their clothing which has little wires designed to gather static electricity and pass it to the ground instead of into drives. - Robert Scoble

"In talking with an LDS friend of mine, he said that his brother recently commented that the church and its members have grown "too comfortable" in today's world, and that to be disliked (as this video displays) should happen more often. His thesis is that the church has some opinions that run contrary to the conventional wisdom, and that public disagreements will occur frequently, making the church and its members more like a pariah. As much as I wish to be accepted, I know that some of our beliefs are seen as unorthodox. Ideally, a proposition like this could be less connected to one religion or a group of them, but we are where we are. Although the church's members are flocking to a multi-faith group, they do have the highest visibility because they have a history of strong organization and fundraising. That they've done it again here is no surprise, and if the bill does pass, there is no doubt folks will harbor resentment, and paint with a broad brush the church's members as a..." - Louis Gray
That is tame in comparison to what I have seen spewed by some of the extreme McCain - Palin supporters as well as those on the far left that support Oboma. - Jeff P. Henderson
Louis, I have to say, the treatment seems quite fair to me. The poster obviously thinks the portrayal of the mormons is quite negative (because they smirk, for example, which, let's be honest, is not a big deal). But really they only do 3 things in the video that cast them in a negative light: remove rings, enter a home unwelcomed, and take away a marriage license. Two of those things are things that Prop 8 seeks to do. Am I missing something here? - j1m
I guess what I objected to is the spirit of the whole thing. Not that I presume to speak for the LDS Church, but I would assume that their official stance is of a loving concern - i.e., we love all people, but this is what our scriptures say. My group, the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, takes a similar approach, although we disagree with the LDS on exactly what "scriptures" mean :) The video portrays two guys who have a perverse delight in staging a "home invasion"; that's the attitude to which I object. - Ontario Emperor
I think it does a couple of things that are reasonable. First, it dramatizes the horror of the lesbian couple in a way that I suspect represents pretty well the actual feelings (of terror!) of many actual lesbian and gay couples. Second, it helps people who are considering voting Yes on Prop 8 to think more concretely about the consequences of that action. - j1m
The other point I'd make is that calling it 'the most hateful video in the 2008 election...' is exaggerated at best. Even if I agreed completely with the Yes On Prop 8 folks, I'd still have to put this behind a whole bunch of videos the McCain campaign has run. [update, this used to say "and probably behind at least one the Yes on Prop 8 folks have run....", but I went back and looked at the ad I was thinking of, and I had misremembered.] - j1m
One thing about the Yes on 8 ads that really pisses me off is the laundry list of 'bad' things they say will happen if 8 is defeated. The fact is if No on 8 prevails, NOTHING will change from the way it presently is today. As opposed to Yes on 8 win which would amend California's constitution to define marriage such that same sex couples would no longer be able to be legally married by the state and would loose the legal rights granted to married couples. i.e. inheritance, tax, visitation rights etc. - Jeff P. Henderson
I have to agree with j1m here, in all counts. - Alejandro S.
Prop 8 sets the US back to the 1950's, embarrassing if it passes - Rick Bucich via twhirl
US>CA - Rick Bucich via twhirl
The LDS has been subjected to a century of religious discrimination, so now that they're becoming reasonably mainstream, they're going medieval on the gays. Ironic, and sadly all too predictable. Calling the LDS on their tactics and the effect it has on people like me is hardly "hateful". - Chuck LeDuc Díaz
Rick, as does this video - Jesse Stay
Slightly hijacking topic, I'd just like to say that after 8 years of mounting stress, I'm finding the conversations on FF about religion & politics are challenging but rewarding. Thanks everybody. No sarcasticon. - Richard Walker
i do find it odd that certain churches seem to think that the most important bits of the bible somehow converge on one or two topics, and those are always what *other people* are doing. Having read the new testament I am always surprised at the difference between the attitude of the Jesus in there - who accepted all sorts of people no matter what their private sins were - and some of today's churches. Don't they notice the sad irony? Or is religion just a way to excuse prejudice that people know is no longer acceptable unless hidden under religion? - Joelle Nebbe
I understand why Mormons might find this offensive, but the use of children in the Yes on Prop 8 campaign is far more offensive again. Kids shouldn't be used this way, period - Duncan Riley
Duncan, so who's the better organization? Let's not be worse than you those you think are at fault. (and the Mormons weren't the ones putting kids in the commercials - the yes on 8 campaign were the ones - attacking Mormons is offensive, regardless of what the yes on 8 campaign is doing) - Jesse Stay via twhirl
@Jesse: Well, what do you say to my point above? It would seem that most of what's going on here is that the Mormon Church is being attacked for something they're actually doing. Do you have a problem with that? - j1m
Jim, the Mormon church isn't doing it - the members of the Mormon church are doing it. The fact that I can come out against it, as can reporters of Huffington Post that are Mormon, as can Louis Gray, and others without threat of excommunication says we can still live our religion and be against the proposition. Attack the pro-8 campaign, and at most religion in general, but don't attack my Church for allowing me to be against Prop 8. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
Well I, for one, am not attacking the Church itself for allowing you to be against Prop 8 :-) - j1m
