For Former Google Employees, Start-Ups Are a Family Affair - NYTimes.com
November 13 at 12:33 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Many of the Xooglers (the name is a contraction of ex-Googlers but is pronounced “zooglers”) are young, entrepreneurial and, thanks to Google’s soaring success, wealthy enough to start their own second acts. Some are starting companies in Silicon Valley and beyond, and others are helping to finance those ventures." - Atul Arora via Bookmarklet
"Google is rewriting the rules and accelerating the pace. Only time will tell if the Xooglers’ start-ups will achieve the success of the most notable Silicon Valley alumni network, PayPal. After eBay acquired PayPal, founders and employees went on to start LinkedIn, YouTube, Slide, Yelp and Founders Fund." - Chris White
Maybe some people think PayPal is the most prolific alumni network, but I think history says Apple would easily rival that. (e.g. NeXT, General Magic, PageMill, VeriSign, WebTV, Pixo, Danger, and Android, just off the top of my head). - Chris White
Nice mention of FriendFeed - "FriendFeed is perhaps the best example of the network in action. Bret Taylor left Google with his colleague Jim Norris, and they became entrepreneurs-in-residence at Benchmark Capital, a venture capital firm. While seeking financing for FriendFeed, they pitched their idea to Paul Buchheit and Sanjeev Singh, two Xooglers-turned-angel investors, who had worked on Gmail. They were so impressed that they invested in and joined the company. FriendFeed’s first $5 million came mostly from Mr. Buchheit and Mr. Singh." - Atul Arora
A great quote from Dominic: "“Google is the most nimble, most malleable 20,000-person company out there, but it still is a 20,000-person company." - Jess Lee
Prolific alumni network? How about Oracle? - Julio F ~ @SocialJulio
Silicon Valley's most important alumni network was Fairfield Semiconductor -- out of which came Intel, AMD, National, LSI Logic and basically every other semiconductor company in the Valley not named Hewlett Packard. One exec, Robert Noyce, mentored Steve Jobs when he founded Apple. Other notable Fairchild alum also included Eugene Kleiner, who founded Kleiner Perkins and Don Valentine, who founded Sequoia Capital. - Bryan Power

Intel's Nehalem (Core i7, if you prefer the official brand name) has been one of the most-anticipated computer products of 2008 and, as of this morning... it's still one of the most anticipated products of 2008. Intel isn't launching the Core i7 yet—that will come later this month—but the company is allowing online and print publications to give a prelaunch look at the chip's performance. Those of you with significant others might actually find this is something of a boon, as it gives you plenty of time to come up with a reason why she should want a faster computer this Christmas. - Leo Laporte

The censors are doing 1 other major thing....limiting the information to the public. If Chinese citizens truly knew how much in the dark ages they are, there'd be a revolt. - clarke thomas

“Video of Seagate hard drives being tested: http://www.viddler.com/explore... more video coming in three weeks.”
November 7 at 12:41 pm - Link
Weird, I can't upload to Kyte.tv from China but Viddler worked fine. This is just one video I shot at the end of the line where they test thousands of drives using tons of these robotic testers. - Robert Scoble
This video is at the end of the line. We shot the other parts on HD so we have to edit those together and upload them after we get home in a couple of weeks. - Robert Scoble
"We still need a human part of it." Explaining why they couldn't automate the end of the line where final Q&A check is. "Human can be upgraded very fast," was the quote on the video. Another line I like is "Seagate workers are well grounded." Each one is grounded twice: once through their special shoes the conductive floor they are on and a second time through a strap that hooks onto their clothing which has little wires designed to gather static electricity and pass it to the ground instead of into drives. - Robert Scoble
really interesting Robert - yeah, i loved the 'human beings can be upgraded easily" too :) - Zee from WeDoCreative
cool - Alex Hammer
I would assume the reason why you can't upload the video to Kyte.tv to the great firewall of china. - imabonehead
ima: yeah, that could be it. Interesting my email is sending again and FriendFeed is wicked fast here, just like at home. Hello to my censors! :-) - Robert Scoble

"UC San Diego computer scientists have built a software program that can perform key duplication without having the key. Instead, the computer scientists only need a photograph of the key. "We built our key duplication software system to show people that their keys are not inherently secret," said Stefan Savage, the computer science professor from UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering who led the student-run project. "Perhaps this was once a reasonable assumption, but advances in digital imaging and optics have made it easy to duplicate someone's keys from a distance without them even noticing." Professor Savage presents this work on October 30 at ACM's Conference on Communications and Computer Security (CCS) 2008, one of the premier academic computer security conferences." - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina) via Bookmarklet

How big is the A380?

Big, really big. I saw some video on it the other day. Nice Plane! - Michael Fidler via twhirl
damn that's large - Cee Bee
That plane is all kinds of swollen up. - Derrick
Big, Big?? - Amir H.
the funny thing: no American airline has ordered it. As much as I could groan about Qantas till the cows come home, it makes me proud that we've got one already, and 3 by the end of the year - Duncan Riley
good luck with fuel prices Duncan... & terrorism... America will wait for the Ethanol version - ⓃⓄⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂⓄⓃ
actually noah, because you have some many people on board, + a little bit of extra efficiency on the engines, you save fuel&cost on a per passenger basis. - Mathieu Ayel
noah the a380 is the most efficient passenger airliner...and terrorism....in Australia? - Anthony Feint
Hehe. Friggin' huge. - Roberto Bonini
I'd like to reserve a room for 2 on board one of these. - Carolyn Chan via twhirl
What kind of plane is that AA plane? - Justin Long
justin - my guess is it's a 717 or a 737 - it's not a MD because those engines are on the back. and it's not big enough to be a 757 - Allen Stern
Allen 737-800. It has the fins on the wings. I'm not sure if AA has 900's, but like most of their peers they are still over represented with earlier models, like the 400 - Duncan Riley
wish someone had a comparison of a 747-400 and the 380 - Justin Long
justin - go to airliners.net - they have tons of photos like that - and duncan - yea i dont think any us airline has a 900 - i dont fly AA much tho. - Allen Stern
Anthony, do you have numbers to back up your efficiency claim? I don't think that claim will last long once the 787 goes into production (if it hasn't already). The A380 only makes sense in long transoceanic routes and these aren't done a lot by American airlines. - Alex Scoble CISSP

FF realtime produces the same real time bite sized chunks of user posts / interactions that twitter serves up - dead ringer for twitter functionality. FF still lacks the DM feature...but getting closer - Susan Beebe

The FF real-time doesn't make me want to drop twitter - Lindsey
Im into it. - loren feldman
It lacks a simple way to direct a comment at someone, a way for that person to view just items directed at them, DM's to other users and truth be told, media sharing (pics, videos, mp3s, etc) doesn't lend itself at all to the quick text communication that makes Twitter so versatile. When I saw real-time, Twitter didn't even enter my head. I'm wondering what you're seeing. - Shawn Farner
FF doesn't have DM and i wish it had, with that said, i'm not sure i want FF turned into Twitter. - Majento

Mini Pen Digital Camera Recorder
September 28 at 10:24 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"World's smallest high resolution, real-time digital camcorder. People won't know the ink pen in your hand or pocket is actually recording video! One-touch record button is the same motion you'd normally use to make pen tip retract and lets you record without suspicion. And yes, you can write with this pen! Color CMOS pinhole camera captures AVI video in 352x 288 resolution and stores it on the built-in 4 GB flash memory. Unscrew pen and plug it into the USB port on your computer for playback. Just plug and play; no special set-up necessary. Camera records continuously until memory is full (approx. 12 hrs) or manually shut off. Automatically saves files before battery is depleted. Li-ion rechargeable battery lasts about 3 hours and charges via USB hookup or included adapter" - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
