A Veteran Describes How The Right-Wing Media’s Misogyny Comes At A High Cost For The U.S. Military
During my time in the Air Force in the early 2000s, I remember regularly seeing Fox on the TV at work and hearing Limbaugh’s angry rants blasting from the radio. Now imagine being a woman in this atmosphere in the last few years, when Limbaugh repeatedly labeled Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” and Fox hosts referred to a female pilot as “boobs on the ground” and suggested she “couldn’t park” her jet. Add that to the fact that many of these shows are aired on bases around the world using taxpayer money, and the situation quickly becomes too much to stomach …

Now put the right wing’s misogynistic messaging into the context of rampant sexual assault in the military, with an estimated 26,000 incidents in 2012, and it creates one very ugly picture. The normalization of the sexual objectification of women, which is actively encouraged by conservative media figures, only makes it more difficult for women in the military to fight the well-documented “invisible war.” If one has the ability to reduce women to mere objects to be used for amusement, what’s to stop them from hitting or raping a fellow service member, particularly if he thinks that he will face little punishment for his actions?

Fox host Eric Bolling may have apologized for his remarks, but that doesn’t erase his participation in the disturbing right-wing trend of encouraging the deep-seated culture of misogyny in the military. This was far from an isolated incident. If conservative media outlets truly want to “support the troops,” then they will change the way they talk about women, in the military or otherwise. Given how many women currently serve our country, it’s more important than ever to truly appreciate their contributions to the defense of our country if we hope to maintain a fully functioning, unified military force that’s capable of handling serious threats to our national security.

George [Zimmerman] hated journalists. He blamed them for turning him into a national villain. There was only one media figure he liked: Hannity. mediamattersforamerica:

Conservative media are going after actress Lena Dunham for encouraging young women to vote in a piece she wrote for Planned Parenthood:

[NRO’s] Williamson started his response by levying a personal attack at Dunham, calling the actress “distinctly unappealing” and describing her piece as ”a half-assed listicle penned by a half-bright celebrity and published by a gang of abortion profiteers,” directed toward Dunham’s “presumably illiterate following.” He claimed that “cultural debasement” is the “only possible explanation” for Dunham’s career.

The NRO columnist echoed a previous infantilizing attack on feminism, casting Dunham’s view of voting as “nothing other than a reiteration of the original infantile demand: “I WANT!” Williamson also took issue with Dunham’s encouraging young women to vote on issues that directly affect them, framing an interest in reproductive rights as an “‘all about me!’ attitude”

More from Kevin Williamson’s column, where he blatantly encourages Dunham’s fans to refrain from voting:

I would like to suggest, as gently as I can, that if you are voting as an act of self-gratification, if you do not understand the role that voting in fact plays in a constitutional republic, and if you need Lena Dunham to tell you why and how you should be voting — you should not vote. If you get your politics from actors and your news from television comedians — you should not vote. There’s no shame in it, your vote is statistically unlikely to affect the outcome of an election, and there are many much more meaningful ways to serve your country and your fellow man: Volunteer at a homeless shelter; join the Marine Corps; become a nun; start a business.

In the past, Williamson’s attacks on women who dare to raise their voices have also extended to Sandra Fluke, Wendy Davis, and Gabby Giffords.

Our answer to Williamson and other conservatives who discourage women from exercising their right to vote, and try to shut down public figures who stand up for women’s choice:

This Week in War. A Friday round-up of what happened and what’s been written in the world of war and military/security affairs this week. It’s a mix of news reports, policy briefs, blog posts and longform journalism.
The ICC will probe possible war crimes in the Central African Republic. Fighters in Nigeria’s Boko Haram drive fear in neighboring Cameroon. The number of refugees fleeing violence in South Sudan nears 2 million. French mountaineering guide Herve Gourdel was beheaded by Jund al-Khilafah, an Algerian extremist group who has aligned themselves with ISIS. The Syrian army has overrun the town of Adra al-Omalia, about 30km from Damascus. A great visual guide to ongoing strikes in Iraq and Syria.  The British debate joining the airstrikes. The Al-Nusra Front leader Abu Yousef al-Turki was reportedly killed in strikes. International law and strikes inside Syria - from Just Security. The UAE’s bombing mission against ISIS targets was led by its first female fighter pilot, Mariam al-Mansouri. Fox News correspondents later joked that she represented “boobs on the ground”* and that she had probably been unable to park her jet.  A newly-discussed terrorist element, Khorasan, appeared in the news this week. Khorasan is often misleadingly characterized in reports as a separate terrorist group, but this AP report is a really comprehensive explanation of who these people are. The White House has said that any ISIS prisoners captured will not end up in Guantánamo. The main theme of President Obama’s speech at the UN this week was ISIS and the plans to combat them. The US believes about 20 to 30 Americans are currently fighting in Syria.  Sameera Salih Ali al-Nuaimy, an Iraqi lawyer who fought for women’s rights, was executed by an ISIS firing squad after several days of torture — another instance of the group’s targeting of professional women. The IAEA rejected an Arab bid to push Israel to sign the global anti-nuclear weapons pact.  Hamas and Fatah have reached an understanding that paves the way for a unity government. Radical cleric Abu Qatada was acquitted of terrorism charges in a Jordanian court. The US has ordered some diplomats out of Yemen. Is the country on the brink of civil war? Adam Baron on the myth of the “Yemen model” of counterterrorism. Ashraf Ghani is now officially Afghanistan’s president-elect.  Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan seized the Ajrestan district of Ghazni province Thursday night, killing 70 people. A suspected drone strike killed 10 Uzbek and Pakistani militants near the border with Afghanistan on Wednesday.  Photographer Massimo Berruti documents the injuries and traumas of victims of drone strikes. The US transferred 14 Pakistani prisoners from military detention to Pakistani custody. Human Rights Watch calls out abuses of political prisoners in Uzbekistan. 50 people were reported killed in Xinjiang last Sunday in what Chinese police are calling an act of terrorism. The US is preparing to ease the Vietnam arms embargo. Pro-Ukrainian residents remaining in the east live in a world of intense scrutiny and propaganda. Latvia fears Kremlin aggression. Hungary suspended gas supplies to Ukraine. The Treasury Dept named 12 Specially Designated Global Terrorists. Interpol is expanding its foreign fighters database. The FBI has identified the killer responsible for the beheadings of James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines, but is not revealing that information to the public. The US is undergoing a major atomic renewal, an overhaul and update of its nuclear weapons systems (despite previous ideas floated about disarmament). The Boston bombing trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been delayed two months.  Elliott Ackerman wrote a beautiful essay for The New Yorker about the two photos marking a beginning and a kind of end for his war.
*As well as being sexists, Fox correspondents also apparently do not have the greatest grasp of the difference between aerial bombing and ground warfare.

Don’t know who the Lost Voices are yet? They’re the youth brigade on the frontlines of Ferguson, leading the fight for justice for Mike Brown. (Many of those tweets you see on my posts are from LV.) Yesterday, their campsite was raided without notice. These young leaders have been under constant attack from police since protests began, but yesterday was a clear intimidation move. Well guess what— Lost Voices will not be intimidated or stopped.  Please make sure you’re showing them your love and support. Consider donating to their efforts today.

RARE DISORDER CAUSING THE FEATHERS OF YOUNG PENGUINS TO FALL OUT

This disease causes the fall of the feathers of penguin chicks leaving the skin without heat insulation provided by the plumage and killing chickens.

In January 2014, in Hope Bay, where lives one of the largest colonies of Adelie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, with some 120,000 couples, during a routine census, researchers noted a chick between 15 and 20 days with areas of skin without feathers. Sadly, the chick died two days later despite not showing any symptoms of suffering from other diseases.

The feather-loss disorder was first seen in 2006 in penguin chicks housed at a captive facility in South Africa. One year later, several cases were observed across the Atlantic Ocean, in wild Magellanic penguin chicks along the coast of Argentina. Researchers believe that disorder is not easily transmitted between individuals. Still, the cause of the disease and how it spreads remain mysteries scientists are now racing to solve
