@luvogt you know that OpenDNS rewrites NXDOMAIN response to show ads, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Google returns NXDOMAIN back to user.
It's an opt-out. You can change your settings to make OpenDNS give NXDOMAIN properly. - Otto
You can disable NX domain redirection (the hijacking of 404's) in OpenDNS under the customization page (uncheck "Enable NX Domain Redirection"). You'll lose some of OpenDNS's more advanced features (like shortcuts), but it'll provide RFC-compliant DNS responses at that point. - Justin Ribeiro
Keshav Khera
So now that Google has its own public dns server, would you use it instead of OpenDns? (and reasons)
OpenDNS hijacks 404 responses; I used it for about five minutes before deciding "never again." I'm wary of Google having access to the entire set of user's DNS queries; that's an awful lot of data. - Glen Mistletoe
I don't like that OpenDNS hijacks 404's either, but I don't really feel strongly enough to switch. - Chieze Okoye
I agree with Chieze. Even though OpenDNS redirects all 404s to its custom ad-filled search page, I am wary of letting out all my DNS queries to Google. I am kind of rebellious against the idea of Google ruling the world, actually. - Keshav Khera
I might. I'm not that upset about hijacked 404's but I am noticing that opendns has problems with subdomains of many sites (i.e. like iphone.website.com instead of www.website.com). Might try it though I feel Google is getting a bit borg-like. - Andrew Leyden

Justin, I don't think that will work with dynamic IPs, will it? - Keshav Khera
Dynamic IP's assigned to you by your ISP shouldn't be a problem, presuming that your updating OpenDNS with your current public IP either with the client software updater (I've used it on the go, works well) or via dns-o-matic (I use that at home at the router level, works well https://www.dnsomatic.com/). Does that answer your question? - Justin Ribeiro
Justin: I've used the client software updater, but using just-another-application for another task doesn't really appeal to me. I don't mind the redirection and for the shortcuts, there are keyword searches in Chrome and Firefox that work as good as OpenDNS shortcuts, if not better. Anyway, thanks for your answer! :) - Keshav Khera
Nope, OpenDNS has a LOT more features - Judah Richardson
Keshav, I totally understand not wanting to run another application. :-) I don't use the client software unless I'm not at home or the office (i.e. I use it at the airport most often), but I do like dns-o-matic use at the router level (I use dns-o-matic for more than just OpenDNS updates as well). I think OpenDNS filtering and keywords work easier when you're managing a network(s)... more... - Justin Ribeiro

FCC Position May Spell the End of Unlimited Internet | Epicenter | Wired.com
NEWS ANALYSIS — FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski’s unsurprising affirmation of support for network neutrality is a victory for the high-minded principle of open, unfettered internet access. Too bad it means the days of all-you-can-eat, flat-rate internet access are probably over. - polou/indigo_bow from Bookmarklet
Been over for years -- how many people have truly all-you-can-eat flat-rate access (not something made up an isp marketing department)? - Brian Sullivan
+1 Brian, it doesn't matter which way the fight goes... in the end, monopolistic companies find a way to rip off consumers... - Tim Hoeck
Open, unfettered internet access means all-you-can-eat, flat-rate access is not over, it has just begun and will get better; we live in a world one can only access via the internet; it must be available to all -- to do otherwise is the same as saying the "days of fresh air and clean water" are over. - vintageozarks
@Brian I was lucky enough to have Speakeasy as an ISP in San Francisco, and if they had a bandwidth limit I never found it (I had a number of dev servers running for work, and had run afoul of Comcast's bandwidth limit previously). The day I moved and could no longer get Speakeasy as an ISP was a sad day. It was pricey, but it was worth every penny. - Justin Ribeiro

Is there a RSS feed for Liked items in Google Reader?
If there is, I haven't been able to locate it. I would suspect it should be under "Folders and Tags" in the settings page much like starred or shared items can be shared (and RSS feed would become available). Hopefully it's a feature in the pipeline. - Justin Ribeiro

If you're going to put Apanta on that list, why not Eclipse? http://www.eclipse.org/ You can install Apanta as a plugin to Eclipse (which works well), and get at least two of the pro features of Apanta (SFTP support and a JSON editor) through other open source Eclipse add-ons. - Justin Ribeiro

Been using RTM for a couple years now, couldn't do without. Easy to use, a multitude of integration options allow easy task adds (phone, IM, desktop, command line, twitter) and I can sharing tasks is quite useful for work and domestic (my wife shares things for me to do all the time :-). - Justin Ribeiro

"An important feature in Google Checkout has now been unavailable for almost a month, and some merchants are getting fed up with Google's automated approach to their concerns. Google's ability to handle recurring payments, such as monthly subscriptions to a service that are automatically billed once a month, has been impaired since around the middle of August with little notice by the outside world. A customer first reported the issue in a Google Checkout forum in August, and others, such as Katie Braband, sales director at storage company Datto, are still unable to rely on Google to process anything other than one-time payments." - I used Checkout once to purchase from an e-tailer. Learned my lesson after doing so apparently made the item unreturnable (WTF) and customer support from Google was nonexistent - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
I've been kind of looking for their support. I bought an android app under my old google account. When GV allowed you use to a different account, I switched my phone to my google apps account. Now I have to buy apps again in order to get the updates it offers me. ;( - Dustin Sallings
Ok I can *sort of* understand Google not supporting free products (even through they bring in tons of ad revenue), but they MUST be making a cut of this.. I'm surprised. I can't get any help in most of the Google forums but I asked something in the Google Search forum.. whammo Five answers including a direct one from a Googler.. in the same day. Wow, you know where they are focused!! - Chris Myles
This doesn't bode well for their attempts to use Checkout to provide payment services for newspapers (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009...) They've been proposing that Checkout could handle both micropayments and subscriptions, although they admit the subscription functionality is "fairly rudimentary"... nothing about being "nonfunctional" though - Hilary
I've used Google Checkout from the merchant perspective on a few projects, and I've found it hit or miss. When you need to resolve a problem, the support is often so vague as to be useless (much like the responses Datto received in the article). It's not like Google isn't making money on Checkout (they take their cut like any other processor), but the support communication needs significant improvement. - Justin Ribeiro

1Password looks interesting and simple. I'm ready to jump, even for $40 to make password management easier that trying to remember where I stored the last password. Like the mobile app feature too. Wait or Go? http://agilewebsolutions.com/product...
1password.jpg
1password-2.jpg
1Password is a Password Manager that uniquely brings you both Security and Convenience. It is the only program that provides Anti-Phishing protection and goes beyond password management by adding Web Form Filling and Automatic Strong Password Generation. All your confidential information, including passwords, identities, and credit cards, is kept in one secure place provided by Apple's OS X Keychain. - Dave
I've considered using an app like this but I just can't get my head around having to install an app just to access various sites. And if I'm at a computer that doesn't have the app installed and/or if my phone is missing or broken? Locked out of stuff because of circumstance gives me the freak-out. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva good point, so you vote wait:) - Dave
I use Keychain, but tend to remember most of my (many, many) logins anyway. I haven't encountered too many instances of being on the road and not being able to get access to something critical. I think Apple has been hesitant to bridge keychain to the iPhone (for good reason). I'd be interested to know how 1Password handles that issue. For now, on the phone, I'll either have an app logged in or remember the web credentials. - LogEx
If you have a lot of logins to enter, it is a great app. I manage over 500 websites and can't remember logins/passwords for all of them. Plus all my personal logins for various personal sites I visit. Having the ability to simply hit CMD+\ to login in is such a time saver. Its also great for sites where FF or Safari, etc won't save a login. Many other features make this the first plugin I install. - Mac64
I use lastpass.com. It's got a Firefox plugin but they also provide bookmarklets so you can login to sites via iphone or any pc browser without having to install anything. It also provides web form filling and some other features. - brendan
I just have a cipher that I use so that remembering passwords isn't a problem for me. - Akiva Moskovitz
I've always been partial to KeePass, which runs on just about every platform, is portable, and open source: http://keepass.info/ You can set it with both a key file and a master password for added security. The iPhone version has been rejected four or five times by Apple (most recently because Apple decided to ignore the documentation they requested) but with any luck will be available in the app store eventually - Justin Ribeiro
I have always been using InformEnter addon with Firefox until something went wrong with my browser I couldnt edit the entries in InformEnter anymore... - TrafficBug
Jump in. I'm really happy with 1Password. Plus, they're very responsive to customer concerns. - Christopher Harley from iPhone
I love 1Password and even upgraded to the forthcoming new version. One thing to consider, however, is Xmarks. Might wanna check that out. It's down to your requirement though. Although 1Password is Mac only (including iPhone), I am happy with the feature-set. Xmarks, on the other hand, is a multi browser plugin, that can sync your passwords and bookmarks across platforms. I am not against Xmarks; I am just happy with 1Password. - Rohit
@Akiva cipher seems like a solid way to handle passwords. Still need something for those that can't be set manually. Thanks for feedback everyone. - Dave
If Keepass ever gets approved for the iPhone then I will switch back to that. Until then, 1Password is an awesome tool. Save the keychain in a Dropbox folder to sync between Macs, and sync to iPhone via WiFi for portability. - Andy Bold
I wish I I hadn't bought the mobile version, but the desktop version is indispensable for me. - cecily

Are there any apps / utilities for the Mac to let you see where your HD capacity is being tapped?
Just had a notice that I had less than 200mb of free space on my MacBook HD. How in the hell that happened, I do not know. I just need to figure out where things need to be thinned out. - JA Castillo
