It is tough at the beginning to get back into shape but keep at it and you'll soon be running like a skinny cat that you'll enjoy and have lots of words to describe. - Robert Banghart

Getting back into shape can really hurt, especially if you are running for the first time in awhile. Have you considered biking to improve your cardio and then switching to running? - Andrew Leyden

JohnBfrom Memphis. Good luck. Running after you've added 10-20 lbs can be a big surprise, as your muscles aren't necessarily ready (like they were when you were younger) to handle that jarring load. It's quite depressing (realizing you are getting a bit older :-). Biking, or roller blading, can help get some strength back and definitely improve your cardio before you start pounding the pavement again as a jogger. - Andrew Leyden

I've been an on-again off-again runner over the years. (35-40 miles/week, to nothing for months), I agree with Andrew's advice about the biking. I usually start w/ stationary for a few weeks before I get back into the longer runs. Good luck! - tagami
