It isn't whether or not you are a cop -- it's whether it matters that the 10 year old child does or does not get hurt in the process. Trying to constrain a kicking, screaming ten year old is not as easy as it sounds. When I was about that age, I objected to getting a shot -- it took 4 male orderlies to hold me down long enough for the shot to get administered. My daughter, at nine, has a blue belt in karate and a wicked round-house kick -- woe to the fool who tries to move that child without her consent.

But cops have training specifically in how to restrain people without hurting them (much). It sounds from the article like there was more than one cop there, as well. I mean, come on, seriously. Multiple cops, and they can't restrain or figure out a way to deal with a ten year old girl other than hitting her with a taser? I see your point, but if it were me in that situation, I'd call...

Agreed, police are trained to use force -- and that may have been the point. Children do not respond to physical threat like adults b/c most don't have enough experience being hurt to have learned to be afraid. And in the article, didn't it say the _mother_ requested the officer use the taser? Weird situation.

That's actually a really good point. Children also don't believe adults would hurt them, which is probably how kids get abducted. I didn't realize the mother requested the taser. That's even worse. I suppose, as the comics writer Mike Carey says, pain is the great teacher. jze Zenarchery: http://www.zenarchery.com Twitter: jzellis AIM: jzellis69

The town of Lewes, East Sussex, England has created their own local currency, accepted by many local businesses...but not local chains. The idea is to promote local businesses and to keep people thinking about things like the lowered carbon footprint of buying locally produced goods. Plus, it's a really lovely banknote.

This is one of the best pieces I've ever read on the modern musician's dilemma. Seriously, if you care about the whole debate about music right now, you need to read this.

An ancestor of mine whose portrait has survived. (He hella looks like me.) Interesting to know this guy's DNA is somewhere in my genetic makeup.
