Can a “Head of Social” help Google fend off Facebook? - http://social.venturebeat.com/2010...
Can a “Head of Social” help Google fend off Facebook?
"A prospective “Head of Social” will have to confront many more deep, underlying cultural issues at Google. The company’s focus on data and sheer computing power have often come at the expense of its empathy and understanding of user experience in social products. This culture made it acceptable for Google Buzz’s designers to think that algorithmically inferring your friends from Gmail would be okay. There was a telling observation by early Facebook investor and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel in the forthcoming book, “The Facebook Effect,” He said: ”A very profound difference is, I think, at its core, Google believes that at the end of this globalization process the world will be centered on computers, and computers will be doing everything…. The Facebook model is radically different. One of the things that is critical about good globalization in my mind is that in some sense humans maintain mastery over technology, rather than the other way around. would be funny if facebook's product team needed a "Head of Social" - karl dotter
Ay, Google has many problems in this regard. However: "The Facebook model is radically different. One of the things that is critical about good globalization in my mind is that in some sense humans maintain mastery over technology" is a joke in light of Facebook's labyrinthine privacy settings. - Alex Schleber
IF you guys wanted to, within days you could empower users thus: Forced choice for each user on their next login: 1) I want everything to be completely private, no one but my friends sees nothing. 2) I want everything to be completely open. 3) I want to muddle through with the detailed settings somewhere in the middle, which will be my responsibiliy. --- And then arrange people's detail... more... - Alex Schleber
Alex: Most people don't want either completely public (who wants their phone number available to everyone?) or completely private (who doesn't want people to be able to find them?). The only desirable choice for most users would be to sit there muddling through complex settings that they don't understand, just so they can get their next Farmville fix. That's like asking people to read a legal document before they can use software. - Gabe

Little City Gardens makes a go of urban agriculture in San Francisco - http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin...
Little City Gardens makes a go of urban agriculture in San Francisco
"It wasn't that the city was devoid of agriculture. They just didn't see a model for economic viability. "There's a reason there aren't farm businesses already in San Francisco," Budner says. "There are a lot of obstacles in terms of how to enter the food economy as a really small producer. An urban farm is going to be microscopic compared to even a small rural farm." Projects like Alemany Farms and the new Hayes Valley Farm are both fiscally sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Trust and focus on education and community empowerment. Budner and Galloway enthusiastically acknowledge the invaluable role that agriculture non-profits and educational programs play. But if the urban food system is to be reshaped, as they think it must, they feel it needs to be approached from as many different angles as possible. They opted for testing the business of small-scale farming. "Urban farming isn't going to solve the food system's ailments, which are huge," Budner says. "But urban farming can work in tandem with small-scale integrated rural farm production."" - karl dotter from Bookmarklet

So, tried to play it Nerd-Cool and not say a thing, but... saw Eric Schmidt yesterday in palo alto. He was talking with someone (not Jobs) @ La Morenita Restaurant on Emerson st. Maybe he was meeting another Apple employee the day before? My coworkers think it was a job interview, but now I'm convinced it was something to do with Apple? - karl dotter

:) I lend my library out a lot, so my friend was returning 'em to me. I have wanted to create a library card system. how do you lend stuff out? - karl dotter
that's a funny idea. i'm not terribly obsessive about my stuff, but i do have a lil' list running in The Hit List (love that app) of what i've handed out lately. - nate beaty
neat, I'll check it out. yea, I'm the same, I actually forgot about those books or that I lent them out. - karl dotter
Hit List looks nice, does it recognize commands/hashtags?, I noticed '@phone' text in the screenshots. - karl dotter
it does. it wooed me into picking up the last macheist bundle, which also had the tease Espresso. (I'm still much happier in Textmate 1, easily my most favorite app.) - nate beaty
