The Color of Magic, if you're reading the Discworld novels start at the beginning. You don't need to, but you get the in-jokes. I started with the Fifth Elephant, so when I went back to the beginning, it all made more sense. If you're not, then I suggest reading Small Gods (a Discworld Novel), American Gods (by Neil Gaiman), *then* reading Good Omens, a joint effort.

Also Strata and Dark Side of the Sun (the 2nd and 3rd Pratchett books I read) are both good. Dark Side of the Sun reminds me of a light Iain M. Banks books.

I've mostly read the Discworld series in order, and IMO it's easier to deal with the gradual changes in tone and style that way.

The used book store in downtown Mtn View (Book Buyers) has an extensive SF section. There's a shelf reserved just for Pratchett's books and it's usually empty - I gather that those books get sold pretty quickly.
- Andrew C
Thanks guys :). Awesome suggestions. I think I'll start with the Color of Magic. I got a vague idea on the Discworld novels on wikipedia and what you said Anika makes sense.

I love the Discworld books and it makes sense to read them in order (as Anika said). That said, out of all the books there are a number of repeating story arcs that span several books, like the Rincewind books, the Witches, or the Watch books. Whatever you do, make sure you read the 'mini-series' books in order. Personally, I love the 'Watch' books and would start with "Guards! Guards!".
- Threepwood
@DeanLeishman @Ms_Charcoal Wld I be able to get into Guards Guards quickly since I wld be starting on the 8th book & not first?
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Yes, if you're reading the mini-series within the novels, then you don't necessarily have to read the books in order. Discworld is just that, so you don't always have the same characters in the books. Sometimes the characters are the focus, sometimes they're background characters with just one line. Like I said, the first Discworld book I read was The Fifth Elephant, I think that was a...

The only reason I say read from the beginning is that it's "life" more or less. So people change jobs, relationships, etc...when you read the later books, then read the earlier ones it's like a spoiler of sorts.
- Anika Malone
++ Threepwood -- that's exactly what I'd recommend (I <3 Vimes!); you don't have to read all of the books in order of publication, but it helps to read the arcs together. There are several books (like Pyramids, or Small Gods) that are stand-alone works that you can read in anywhere. If you were to read Hogfather before reading Soul Music, you might get a bit confused. The Wikipedia entry actually covers the arcs pretty well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...

I vote Good Omens, which he wrote with Neil Gaiman. Love that book.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Wow, enlightening. You guys know your Pratchett. I was pretty sure I am going to start with The Color of Magic but I need to read a little more about Guards! Guards! or even Small Gods or Good Omens.
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Definitely read them in order.... but I might also start with Good Omens. It's a collaboration, but laugh-out-loud funny... you'll get a solid novel with an introduction to his sense of humor.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
That is a great link, Timothy. I couldn't remember where I'd seen that reading guide graphic before :)

One thing about Pratchett's books in the US is that (AFAIK) they generally don't have the great Paul Kidby or Josh Kirby covers. This probably sounds a bit petty, but OTOH, look up the cover art - it's great.
- Andrew C
Andrew: You might cringe at this but I usually listen to books first so not worried so much about the cover art. If I love it, then I go kill a couple of trees. :)
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Andrew, that's not entirely true. Most of my Pratchett books have the Kidby or Kirby covers. They weren't hard to find at all.
- Anika Malone
Maybe Audible is geo-tarded but I can't find Good Omens on it. Any of you in the U.S. who see it?
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
It really makes me feel terrible whenever I think of pterry having Alzheimer's
- Aaman Lamba
@aamanlamba I know. I heard he writes just a few words a day because of it but he still does! How awesome is that!
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
One more thing. If you're gong to read the Discworld books in order, I own them all. Some of them are nearly impossible to find in bookstores and libraries, so if you run into that problem just let me know.
- Anika Malone
Anika! That's an amazingly generous offer. Thank you. I really appreciate it :).

If I pick off the eggplant will you still share with me?
- Anika Malone
Of course! If I had some beef lying around, that would have gone even better. Best combination - Beef green curry with Roti or Green curry with Spagetti. Had neither so it was rice.
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Heck yeah! We had curries tonight as well.
- Akiva Moskovitz
And I want your glasses. I need new ones...okay I *want* new one and am thinking of some darker frames this time around.
- Anika Malone
That biryani would have never known the inside of a fridge if I was around.
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Next time I make some, you better be around. That was just too much for 2 adults to eat.
- Anika Malone
Next time I visit my friend in SF, I'm making a trip to LA :) (you are in LA aren't you?). He and I used to ride around Hyderabad on a dinky 125cc motorcycle looking for the perfect Biryani - two fat basterds with a er...healthy appetite. So yeah, I'll bring it :)
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
LOL Great story. Yes, I'm in LA. You must visit.
- Anika Malone
I feel the same way about DailyBurn or other exercise sites. Where's the RSS?
- Anika Malone
Exactly! These sites are great at what they do but I wonder why they wouldn't plug in something as fundamental and absurdly simple to implement as feeds.
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
I wonder why they don't bother giving us feeds. It seems like such a no-brainer in this day and age.
- Anika Malone
@Melindhra Yup, That seems to be the consensus-Color of Magic seems to be where I should start unless I start outside Discworld. Thanks!
"Michael Jackson had a mountain of unreleased recordings in the vault when he died — music that is almost certain to be packaged and repackaged for his fans in the years to come. The material includes unused tracks from studio sessions of some of Jackson's best albums, as well as more recently recorded songs made with Senegalese R&B singer and producer Akon and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am. "There are dozens and dozens of songs that did not end up on his albums," said Tommy Mottola, who from 1998 to 2003 was chairman and CEO of Sony Music, which owns the distribution rights to Jackson's music. "People will be hearing a lot of that unreleased material for the first time ever. There's just some genius and brilliance in there." The releases, Mottola said, "could go on for years and years — even more than Elvis.""

What is the best way to sell on Facebook? A friend wants to setup an online store on facebook for niche t-shirts.
"The Shuffle Demons, famous for a brassy mid-eighties pop song called 'Spadina Bus', are up to some Canada Day shenanigans this week as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival. The band is celebrating their 25th anniversary, a remarkable milestone considering the transient nature of the Canadian music industry. This Wednesday they are attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the largest saxophone ensemble...ever. Our fair city held the previous record in 2004 (also orchestrated by the Shuffle Demons) but it was broken by a group of Taiwanese sax players last year. The Demons', headed by frontman Richard Underhill, will be leading approximately 950 sax players in a five-minute version of 'Oh Canada'. Hosted at Nathan Phillips Square, this brazen concert will be among the largest, and definitely jazziest, Canada Day celebrations in the country."

I was just saying how much I wanted some tandoori chicken too. I just about died the other day when I realized I still have a jar of seasonings left. Just need something to put it on.
- Anika Malone
My sis has an awesome tandoori recipe but she wasn't in when I called. I'll share the marinade recipe tomorrow after I get it from her.
- Kamath (ಮೆತ್ತ ಭವನ)
Great! I rarely make my own, so I wind up using the tandoori paste.
