hmm, sonos is the most usable/reliable multizone music system around, but the CR200 looks a little lacking... i don't mind knocking off successful UIs, but where is the improvement over the iphone app? i'm looking for drag and drop, coverflow-style browsing, global search....
- ishak
@ishak it's not about comparisons vs iphone app, it's about comparisons vs the older controller. not everyone has an iphone...
- Jeremy Toeman
My mom made great crabcakes by following the recipe on the Old Bay box - and leaving out the Old Bay. Our Subway shop puts it on tuna and seafood subs by request. And Heather - never boil crabs! Steam them.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Wow - when did Old Bay get so popular? We used to have to explain this stuff to out-of-towners.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
@alex but, i thought only whimps prefer old bay on steamed blue crabs laid out on yesterday's newspaper
- ishak
Yep, in Maryland they have this at the Subway shops. Put that heavily onto a seafood and crab sub and you're in for a treat. Goes great on pasta salads and any seafood. Makes me miss Maryland.
- Josh Haley
When friends move out of Maryland we send them Care Packages of Old Bay and Tastykakes.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
*sigh* Tastykakes - chocolate juniors by the case when I am on my deathbed.
- Janet
Yeah. We can't even begin to imagine the power it takes to move an entire country a whole 12 inches. That's insane, even by seismological standards.
- Jason Huebel
Only 40 million earthquakes to go. Then the two countries will be the same land mass. :)
- Morton Fox
still won't get most kiwis and aussies to actually visit each other's countries :)
- ishak
I wonder if airline tickets between the two countries will come down in price.
- Barak B
wow, and the police officers arent on some sort of leave? shameful
- Patrick Janidlo
Seriously. I mean, wouldn't *you* be pissed off if cops came to your front door and accused you of breaking into your own house, refused to believe you until you presented identification, then arrested you because you were understandably a little angry? For god's sake, the man was standing in his own bloody house!
- Joel Webber
OK, that's a crime. Seriously. Arresting HLG is a crime. When are the police going to be charged.
- anna sauce
The last line of the article: "The Rev. Al Sharpton vowed to attend Gates' arraignment Aug. 26."
- Daniel J. Pritchett
One I think Tutivillus just coined a great phrase of "Collision of Stupid" That should be a blog with posts of less then Darwin Award type things.. Two, man does this guy have a lawsuit against the police. Time to fight back against these people who we give power and then abuse the power.
- Santa CW™
"Oops.. I dropped the charges." "-Well, pick them up then! We don't have all day!"
- Jemm
so glad FF comments are sane, so much misinfo was reported on this story until today. when you've been discriminated against, these stories bring so many unpleasant memories back.

I would like to compost. I started doing some research on it and posted some fantastic articles about it here on friendfeed. Let me know if you'd like me to find those for you...
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I don't really know "how" to but learning... We don't have citywide composting where I live.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I use a metal mixing bowl with a bio-bag sized for the little green pail. It looks marginally nicer on the counter as we don't have room under the sink for, well, anything. When it is full or offensive it just gets tied up and put in the curbside bin. Glad also makes a similar biodegradable bag. You can the the Glad bag at Target; bio-bag at Whole Paycheck or Berkeley Bowl (dunno what your commute takes you by).
- Tony Del Porto
all right anna, here's a link http://www.cityfarmer.org/wormcom... to worm composting. this is the way to do it if you live in a high-rise with no outdoor space of your own. red wiggler worms in a multi-tiered bin works faster, so less smell. you can use worm tea on an indoor container garden.
- ishak
Don't put meat or dairy products into your compost bin and you'll have almost no issue with smell. Also, layering used coffee grounds on top of the plant matter will help with fly issues.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Seattle has a citywide composting program. They pick up our compost bin here every Friday. They're giving us another year or so to get used to it and then after that, will be fining people if they find compostables in the regular garbage. They already fine people if they find recyclables in the regular garbage.
- Rochelle
We compost using a lidded bin in the kitchen we empty every day, but we compost in our garden. The city is just starting a program but we probably won't use it since we have 2 bins and it works fine. To keep flies out you need to keep the lid on everything all the time.
- WorldofHiglet
Wish that was an option where I live! Maybe someday...
- Lo
Yes. Vermicomposting for household food waste. Citywide lawn and yard waste.
- Miss Elle
Tony- yeah our curbside bin, the city issued one, is attracting odors & flies.
- anna sauce
ishak- I used to worm compost in the Mission, but here I literally have no room. I'm working on organizing my building (150 + units) compost program, and need help with those who are using the city program (Not their own).
- anna sauce
NIce to know everyone is composting! Any city-dwellers contributing to a city-wide program, though?
- anna sauce
How does that work? Surely 6 - 6 is 0. Multiples of zero are still zero...
- Martin Bryant
I read online recently that you're supposed to do the multiplication first. I was taught that you go in order if there are no parentheses.
- Admiral Anika
Multiplication/division are always evaluated before addition/subtraction.
- Jason Huebel
multiply/divide have precendence, so it's like 6-(6*6), or 6 - 36, or -30. Side question, what's the average SAT score in the WoW Trade chat forum? ;-)
- Andy Bold
I was always taught to work through sequentially.
- Martin Bryant
+1 Shevonne. So if I had put ( 6 - 6 ) * 6, Anika would be correct. But only because I forced the subtraction to take precedence by putting it in parenthesis.
- Jason Huebel
Yes. My math teacher in middle school helped us learn by this expression: (P)lease (E)xcuse (M)y (D)ear (A)unt (S)ally =D I thought it was silly when I was a kid, but it worked!
- Shevonne
If any of you are on a Mac, just pull up a terminal window and type python. Then you can type the expression in. Programmers learn pretty quickly that multiplication has higher precedence.
- Cristo
In my opinion, if you don't use parenthesis in an equation then you're doing a disservice to the person who's trying to solve it. #mathgeekcomplaint
- Jason Huebel
Yeah, I learned the Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally thing for equations *with* parentheses, but I also remember being taught the same as Anika re: equations *without* — you go in order. I have no math recall anyway. God knows how I made it through to AP Calc in HS. -_-
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
I only learned the order of operations while learning BASIC. I'm not even sure they ever addressed it in math class. But according to Google, the order of operations has been around for a while. Apparently there's some controversy as to whether multiplication has higher precedence than division, or if they have equal precedence, like addition and subtraction.
- Victor Ganata
If you're on a Mac, forget about opening the terminal, CMD-Space and type your expression. Jason, what's the background to the WoW forum issue?
- Paul Grav
It's just a little trolling fun, admittedly. A friend of mine will post something like this occasionally just to see the sparks fly. He'll say something like, "hey, need help with my math homework. What is 6 - 6 * 6?" People will respond with various answers. Then when someone says "No, you all are stupid. It's definitely -30." my friend will post that his math teacher says it's -12. THEN things really go nuts. ;-)
- Jason Huebel
from IM
Use BODMAS. Brackets, Others, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. Makes things like the square root of (9 - 5 * cube root of 6) make sense.
- Rich
Now I am curious. I think most computer languages and Google will just evaluate multiplication and division left-to-right, but how do human beings do it? For example, how would you read 3*10^3/6*10^6? Or how about 1/2 x, where x = 6?
- Victor Ganata
I was told there would be no math on Friendfeed! ;)
- holly
Actually, on that second one, it depends on if you are saying that 1/2 is a fraction or if you mean 1 divided by 2. The distinction is significant.
- Jason Huebel
from IM
Yeah, if multiplication and division have equal precedence, then you get 3. If multiplication has higher precedence than division, then you get 1/12.
- Victor Ganata
@Victor, ambiguity is the root of all evil. :-)
- Jason Huebel
I <3 that this simple math problem/discussion made Best of Day. :-D
- Jason Huebel
Yup, basic arithmetic, order of operations, PEMDAS. -30. You can get twelve if you adjust a power and a sign. 6 - -6x6^0, but then that's not the same evaluation.
- Pete Delucchi
There's one ambiguity: is multiplication higher precedence or equal precedence with division? Although in practice, I think all software considers them equal precedence.
- Victor Ganata
I generally do multiplication first.
- Jason Huebel
from IM
Now I know why I didin't do well at math. Thanks for the reminder :)
- Roberto Bonini
I wasn't trying to insult anyone, it just surprised me. ;)
- Alejandro
I'm not sure how often this scenario actually comes up for the average person. I don't remember the last time I had to remember the order of operations in order to calculate something. And when in doubt, I use parentheses.
- Victor Ganata
Order of operations: "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". Given that logic the result would be -30.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
In most programing languages, the answer is -30. But if you're working in Smalltalk, which doesn't respect the standard order of operations, then the answer would be 0.
- Joey Gibson
The order of operations in Smalltalk is *very* simple and easy to explain to anyone. No complicated "levels of precedence". Just left to right for operators. That's important when you can invent an operator at the drop of a hat... you can still look at a local section of the code and know how it is parsed.
- Randal Schwartz
@Randal, I can definitely see the power and flexibility of that.
- Jason Huebel
This is why I switched to RPN years ago. 6 6 6 * -

My kinda amp... tube pre, solid state amp, and a nice on board DAC. And nice design to boot!

really curious about sonos board option. good sound hard to achieve with their compression, but i've never tried to bypass their dac. assumed they have massive compression over LAN.
- ishak
Yeah, bypassing the Sonos dac will go a long way towards improving its audio quality. If the specs pan out, the Nova should do a good job of making digital audio pleasant. Even at 24/96, the supporting electronics in the unit seem to go a long way towards giving the dac a better signal to work with. Add to that a tube preamp section and I suspect that the Nova does a more than adequate job with computer music. I haven't yet been able to audition it yet, but hope to do so very soon.
