And we're back in business. +1 for Jasons comment! - Roberto Bonini
Just because you live in tech land, doesn't mean you should use acronyms without identifying them at first use...didn't they teach you that in journalism 101? - Alex Scoble CISSP
Alex, don't make your brother block you. :-) - Louis Gray
Robert, the web interface for Gmail is down, but IMAP is still working, at least from the middle of the Pacific (I'm on the Disney Magic) - Peter
Hehe, Louis, he's not even subscribed to me...can anyone tell the less fortunate of us what the heck DM means? And Gmail is working for me, just intermittently - Alex Scoble CISSP
very happy that I've never DM'ed Scoble...hehehehe! - Susan Beebe
just a thought; sometimes new Twitters don't know all of the etiquette ins and outs. - Brian Wilson
Yes, we got it Robert. I personally understood no DM like 6 months ago when I friend'd you. - Aaron Myers
I still don't understand the fascination with DM's in the first place. Are people begging for stuff? Trying to get you on a date? What? LOL - ♫ Rahsheen™

FUCK GMAIL. I pay $50 per account to Google for email and they can't keep their shit up. - Aaron deMello
Google is pretty slick, they get all the tech bloggers advising people to trus them with all their data... then when they go down they jsut say "hey, its beta... we didnt tell yout o depend on us". Best of both worlds. Full trust, zero risk. - Soulhuntre

Well, sites like Twitter still have about a year before true mainstream acceptance. Something like FriendFeed is probably 18 months or more from mainstream acceptance, and it would need more filtering capabilities to get there. Video on a mobile is probably a little closer, but not sure about the publishing aspect. - Rob Diana
Rob: try again. Blogging still is barely mainstream and it's been out for 10 years now. Facebook just got to 110 million users. How many people in the world are there? Six billion? Funny how we consider things "mainstream." - Robert Scoble
Well, if 110 million users isn't "mainstream", then yes, I will change my estimates :) I think twitter (or microblogging) will go mainstream soon because it is so simple, and IM-like. "Real" blogging requires too much work and thought, and that is probably why it took so long. That and the tools have not been around for the full 10 years. Not sure when things like LiveJournal and WordPress really came about. - Rob Diana
LiveJournal was out in late 90s, I remember seeing it 2001 and I'm sure I wasn't early. WordPress came out shortly after that. Probably around 2003. Yeah, microblogging will probably be more popular than regular blogging. I'd agree with that, but it has a long way to go. Twitter has, what, a million or two users, not all of whom are active? - Robert Scoble
What's amazing is it seems that you guys beat the mainstream by days, not hours- for example, Andreesen/Facebook - Dino
LiveJournal, early 1990s? Try 1999, as late 1990s as it gets. ;o) - Fraser Smith
Sorry, I meant early 2000's. I'll fix that. - Robert Scoble
you are talking about heads down researchers from the nihs hp though robert :-p - mike "glemak" dunn
LiveJournal is huge in Russia, apparently. And the biggest search engine there is something called Yonex (useless info 4 the day alert) - john conroy
For me, I've gotten used to think in terms of mainstream for techies and mainstream for the general public. - Joey Lo
@Rob Diana - You're wrong - FriendFeed does not need more filtering to become mainstream. Mainstream users don't filter, they expect it to work and that's it. You're also wrong about FriendFeed becoming mainstream anytime soon. People don't use many services, therefore FF is useless for them. Not even blogging is mainstream, and probably won't ever at a scale like Facebook. Most people haven't got interesting things to tell. - sebmos
I still find it amazing that people continue with Twitter (myself included) despite it's hilariously fragile state. - Jonathan Beckett
I'm no techie, compared to some of the folks around FF anyway. I know "just enough to be dangerous," according to my wife's IT dept. But I rely on posts from folks like Scoble et al. to expand my knowledge of the tech world. FF is invaluable for that, but even though I signed up for it months ago, I didn't really start using it until the last 4-6 weeks. I think new sites and apps take a little getting used to, esp. if you're not really "out there" in terms of knowledge and know-how. - steplow = Steve Lowe
Interesting tweet Scoble. I wish I could get unlimited data here in Canada so I could Qik. - Granteezy
This says more about the researchers being out of touch than it does about social media. - Sam Pullara
@robertscoble - what you say about mainstream is exactly how I've tried making the point before that not only are services like Facebook reaching less than 10% of active Internet users, but most the world still needs to get connected! when people talk about Twitter going mainstream I want to scream "learn your orders of magnitude" - Julian Baldwin
I use my father and brother as 'touchstones' for mainstream. My dad, at 71 is an attorney who uses the computer for work only, doesn't regularly use email for personal reasons (but does for work) and can use the internet (he tracked down my twitter!) but doesn't see the need for it. My brother, at 44 is a judge who majored in CS & Psych in undergrad. He's a computer geek, but more into gaming than SocMed. They keep me from buying into the 'echo chamber' - yes, we are that far ahead. - Lucretia Pruitt
The Fins sold us the phones. So maybe we're not that far ahead. :-) - Dave Winer
I agree with Scoble, blogs, twitter, friendfeed, plurks won't be mainstream for a while. There is actual nothing in them that would give people a reason to hop on them in droves. E-mail yes, IM yes, static webpages, forums yes. And that's all. - Roland Hesz
I asked a bunch of people I work with regularly about Friendfeed and 1 person knew what it was. I work in the web industry. Maybe I was asking the wrong people. - Kate
Our focus is different. I don't know jack about sustainable architecture, for instance, but my friends who don't give a damn about blogs are all about green energy, sustainable city planning, etc. That's something that a lot of people on FriendFeed don't understand or care about. "Ahead" is a relative term. My dad is on FriendFeed, but he just sees it as another way to follow what I'm doing. My mom barely knows how to use e-mail, but she knows all about advances in wound care that I don't understand, but will be increasingly important as the population gets older and increasingly diabetic. Different strokes for different folks. - Steve Lynch
via Alert Thingy
I like what Steve Lynch replied, re. his friends/other people having a different focus, especially the bit re. his friends "who don't give a damn about blogs are all about green energy, sustainable city planning, etc. That's something that a lot of people on FriendFeed don't understand or care about. 'Ahead' is a relative term." I see that in my own communities of interest, where people are comfortable with forums (ew!), have made tentative forays into FB, but don't get blogs, much less Twitter, FF, etc. - Yule Heibel
@steve - that's a well stated point..I need to spend more time thinking about my understanding of mainstream and how it applies to sub-populations - Julian Baldwin
This discussion is a bit self-congratulatory, wouldn't you say? I would frame it a different way: how out of touch with the mainstream are we? The answer, of course, is very much so. Another question: are we out here on the cutting edge or just hunting snipe? - Juan Aguilar
I doubt Twitter will ever go "mainstream" if we define mainstream as a majority of the people who are online via computers or cellphones. Blogs, wikis, RSS, none of that is mainstream. Browsing, email, SMS...those are mainstream. - wrecks
now that it is mentioned, SMS reached mainstream pretty quick. - Ruben Llibre
@Jua Aguilar Hunting snipe. It's not in any way a cutting edge. It's just a way to pass time. - Roland Hesz
@wrecks: Good point. Maybe it would be better to talk about functionality rather than platforms, then. I'd say that social networking and IM are mainstream. I think real-time video on cellphones (for example) could go mainstream in a few years, but it wouldn't necessarily mean that "Qik" goes mainstream. I think wiki-like functionality will become more common... because it is very convenient. I think the functionality of a lot of Web 2.0 apps will be incorporated into mainstream devices, which is how it will become mainstream.... Torrents and Mp3 sharing was once for tech-heads only.... - Steve Lynch
via Alert Thingy
Lots a of great points, regarding Robert's original post I think that online video is finally taking off in a big way thanks to YouTube and that speaks more to the mainstream than any of the social applications we use to create and share content and conversation. Live mobile video broadcasting is still relatively new but video chat with Skype seems to be reaching a mainstream audience thanks to Oprah using it on her show and recent New Earth web casts. How much does the generation gap play into this? - Larry Kless

DINO, I TOO AM A GRADUATE OF UPPERCASE UNIVERSITY. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think the little fishes get replies back first Mike... there are some thinking minds at work within the revamp and re-enable feature side of the operations now. My guess is there is a lot of staggered and controlled re-introduction of features based on your metrics and profile as it relates to loading on the system. Or, I could be full of crap and wishfully thinking. :) - qthrul
I have to be honest and say that I am not using twitter that much - it is not as functional and they need to sort out the issues. Plus all my friends have defected to Plurk and I hate it. - Dave Gray

So do we go straggling back then, like a cat after straying over to friendfeed? - Dave LaFontaine
@dave Not me. Twitter is dead. They can't run such a service, and friendfeed has a lot more functions. Why TWitter, when there is something that works? - Ryo
I did see the replies. But there's dozens of other services to see your replies. So who cares. And FF indeed is much richer. - Martijn Verver

Cannot wait for Qik live on iPhone! Been waiting for a while. Didn't know if it would show up or not without a native Apple-made video function. - Andrew Dobrow
if i could just get invited to qik i would love it, looks awesome! btw, will they have a native app for iphone software 2.0 or do we *have* to jailbreak? - Ivan Stegic
I don't have an iPhone... too luxurious for the 3rd world. - directeur
Not worth jailbreaking my iPhone for... Maybe when they have an SDK app - Bwana
Is the Nokia camera better than the iPhone? - Aaron Myers
That just might be the tipping point for me if I can run Qik and Flixwagon on an iPhone. I've already been promised one for Father' Day! - Larry Kless
The Nokia's camera is way better than the iPhone. - Robert Scoble
It seems that Apple chose stability and battery life over many possible hardware upgrades. A 2 MP camera is far from perfect but it's not a dealbreaker for me. New iPhone here I come. - Out Wrong
I hope they will release their iphone app to general public very soon! - Leon Ho
this will be awesome, at last a good reason to join Qiiiiik! ^^ - Dan H. Racek
i want to see your qikroll...and please, please don't have it be repeated rick astley videos... - George Lee

Huh? Though it didin't do video ( err, at least the software doesn't)? - Roberto Bonini
Yeah, is it simply a software/firmware solution to turn a still digital camera into a video camera? Have I got that right? - Rick Wolff
Its logical to assume so if its only avaliable as a hack. If Qik can SDK their app, thats the last of my hassles with the iPhone 3G gone. - Roberto Bonini
I love my Apple TV! You might be able to do a lot more with a Mini, but the Apple TV provides a lot of functionality in a brain-dead manner out of the box. - Tad, Fool
you should check out fred wilson's blog - he posted today about this software he uses on his mac mini thats hooked up to his TV. - Zach Landes
via twhirl
If you're looking for HDMI/HD output from a Mac Mini, you're not going to find it. Otherwise, Front Row is a poor man's Apple TV. No VOD options in Front Row, though. - Mark Trapp
As near as I can tell, Dave Winer and Robert Scoble were psyched about Flickr support on the Mac Mini, which was added a month later in Apple TV 2.0. - Mark Trapp
I have an old iMac hooked up to the TV. Great for using HypeMachine & Hulu/Joost. An EyeTV chip and software would really complete things though. - Nicholas Molnar
via twhirl
I spent some time researching this recently, and it looks like a contrast between codec support and your display. It's apparently very messy getting component out of a Mini, so if your TV doesn't do DVI/HDMI, you're probably better off with an ATV. On the other hand, I'm told that even a hacked ATV struggles to deal with videos in an MKV enclosure, and the CPU chugs when presented with high bitrate x.264 content at 720p. So if you have a library of ripped HD-DVD/BluRay discs, you're better off with a Mini. - Roger Benningfield
Or let your iMac handle the hard stuff and just stream the video to the ATV. I stream almost all of my content, very little video sits on my ATV. - Tad, Fool
ATV is fine as long as you don't mind converting your content to mp4s containing H.264 and AAC. Personally, I don't mind at all, there are plenty of apps that can do the conversion. Be aware that the ATV only supports upto 720p @ 24fps, again this isn't a problem for me since my TV's native resolution is 1366x768 (it's supports 1080i, but obviously there's not going to be any picture difference compared to 720p). Also, ATV has a great interface and is easy to use, it's wife friendly. - Paul Grav
good stuff guys, the idea of hooking up an iMac intrigues me as well - how about TVs with PC inputs, anyone use that? how's the picture/resolution on that? i think it's just a vga input? - MG Siegler
The VGA inputs on TVs are often limited in resolution. Also, on some TVs, the VGA input won't get scaled up to the full resolution of the TV, resulting in a picture smaller than the screen (good quality, but smaller picture). It's good to test the capabilities of the TV's VGA input before committing. - Logical Extremes
@logical - thanks. yeah that is what i had heard too which is why i was asking. it'd be nice to use that port since it's there and open, but if it shrinks the resolution, no real point - MG Siegler
I looked at a bunch of these setups, and ultimately, I went for the sub $200 Magnavox hard drive recorder, and I love it. - Dino
I run a MythTV setup which works fantastic but unless you are familiar with Linux I would not recommend it due to the setup. - Jon-Paul Bussoli
i gave oovoo a try for at least 4 times over the past year and everytime deinstalled it again - main reason? quality is worse then in skype "bad times" - Dieter Schwarz
via Alert Thingy
I need something that can do video with multiple panelists, and the quality I was getting, even with six people in a conference, was very good. I'm definitely going to use it for listener calls. Skype keeps popping up windows and stutters every time it does whenever I use it for listener cals. We'll see if it's good enough for host audio, though. - Leo Laporte
I was about to say Windows only then noticed they're finally offering a Mac version. checking it out now - Duncan Riley
and then I did check it out only to find the Mac version doesn't offer recording. Oh well. - Duncan Riley
For some reason or another, they are only offering the pay "options" for windows? Thought you mac users might want to know that. May just be limited for the time being? - Tony C.
what's wrong with skype ? why are you contemplating dropping it ? - Murali
This is great. I was just looking for another incomptiable video phone app. Will this work with Skype or VoIP? - John Cooper
Leo, you need to keep "some" consistency; that may be more important (to holding on to your exisiting & new audience) than the continual "search" for the best software client. I just joined Skype, "because you use it". Listen to the comments above, and work w/ Skype, if you can....just my humble opinion; the same thing is happening w/ the "social network" clients; I can't keep joining them all, just to be able to "participate", and participation (and consumption) is "the" point, isn't it? .....I know, I know ... 6 people in a video conf. will be fun ...maybe....Why am I thinking I'm going to eat some Crow! - mark dekruyter
While we're at it, I love TWiT, but it is soooooo looongg. You should keep it moving with an outline like McLaughlin. - Dino
Can't wait to see the TWiT panel this sunday all using ooVoo. That would be the ideal setup IMO. - Danny M
I agree on length. I have trouble fitting podcasts into my listening schedule if they are over 45 min. - Kreg Steppe
via twhirl
I think the audio quality is a little better on Skype, but oovoo has a better featureset and the Skype client keeps getting worse every version. Skype definitely needs some competition. - Neil
@duncanriley First thing I noticed about ooVoo was the ability to record video, but then it's Windows-only. Deal killer. - Daniel Shaw
@Neil Agreed, competition, and therefore innovation, in this space is good. - Daniel Shaw
@mark_d If you're making buying decisions based on Leo's flavor of the month, you're going to go crazy and/or broke soon. As a tech industry insider/reporter/whatever, it's Leo's job to try these things. Plus, what did it cost you to join Skype anyway? 5 minutes of your time? - Daniel Shaw
@daniel shaw You are so right; I assumed that someone would point out the weakness in my post; I do realize (now) that it's part of Leo's and others "scope of work" to try these things out, for whatever reasons...thxs. - mark dekruyter
I think for $50 a year you can not beat Skype Pro. It also had great plug-in support. I'm not ready to move on yet... - Brad
Love Ooovoo. And BTW, I've used it on Mac. - Cartfly

I do have a beta, and i dont like it, maybe i am resisting change, but there it is. . - ani625
the beta looks and feels terrible. i couldn't stand using it, so I switched back - Graham Garland
can anybody post screen shots of the beta? what's so different that makes it terrible? - acedanger
via twhirl
Well, it does not show one's current bookmarks, only a "snapshot" of the past (sometime in '07); The UI is terrible as Graham has mentioned.. - ani625
Is it clunky or slow or counter-intuitive? What makes it terrible? - Abby Martin
The problem is that the beta is more cosmetic than functional (at least to the users' eye) and it doesn't work with current del.icio.us tools or bookmarks. So you play with it for a while, but can't really bang on it on a day-to-day basis. - Judi Sohn
Since I have Mento, I am waiting no longer. del.icio.us is good as an archive, but that's it. If Yahoo! were able to generate personalized search results from my bookmarks, that might create value for me. - Lars Trieloff
I like the current version. It does pretty much exactly what I want it to do, nothing more and nothing less. - AJ Kohn
The current version is simple and powerful, the new version doesn't really seem to be much of an improvement and in some cases is actually worse. There don't seem to be any new features e.g. delete bookmarks people have sent you without having to save them first, they look pretty directionless to me. I did start writing a blog post entitled "Does anyone care about del.icio.us" but I've never quite got around to finishing it. - Andy Davies
What new features have been promised? I'm quite happy with the current design, even if it is a bit dated....via feedalizr - Richard Bradshaw
I'd rather have the current version than the 'new' beta. The beta doesn't add anything worth having, has a painfully hip design and doesn't sync with the current version so that I can live with it long enough to get used to its foibles. If Joshua really is working on something else then I'll start taking regular backups of my data from now on. - Adewale Oshineye
I love Delicious. I just hope they haven't c**ked it up - john conroy

Already posted to your actual piece but suck up every day Robert ... It goes faster all the time. Mine's in post-grad?! I still have to pinch myself every once in a while. If we have good kids we really should be very grateful! - Charlie Anzman
this is my first time listening to gillmor. i don't like it. steve gillmor is a rude interviewer. i bailed after 11mins. he's pushing friendfeed to clone twitter. they don't want to. he should let it go or build this clone himself - Baratunde Thurston
Baratunde: you should listen after I come in. I want some of the same things. My four features I want? 1. XMPP so I can get FF in real time and talk with it via Google Talk. 2. SMS compatibility so I can get to it during disasters on my cell phone. 3. Much better filtering and querying abilities (aka Twitter's Track). 4. Ways to privately message people. That sure sounds a lot like I want FF to clone Twitter, but on the other hand, I don't want to lose FF's unique features, either. - Robert Scoble
Baratunde: start listening at about 33 minutes in. - Robert Scoble
I have to agree with Baratunde. I've just started to listen to the gillmor gang and steve was rude. It didn't really feel like Steve was interviewing the founders of FriendFeed but tell them how to run their company....via feedalizr - Chris Rodgers
Chris: that's exactly what he was doing. And I think he's right to do so. I hope they listen. - Robert Scoble
Plus, a big reason a lot of us do this is to have our side of the story heard. If we don't get to do that, then this turns into a job and/or a PR event. Screw that. - Robert Scoble
Baratunde: you should especially listen at about 50 minutes when Marc Canter gives Steve Gillmor crap and he explains himself. "All the heroin has been taken off the streets." - Robert Scoble
If I'm the FF guys, I don't mind very direct criticism. FF is on to a good thing -- they have plenty to be proud of -- and this sort of feedback is as good as pricey market research. It'll show them where the next level could be. - Chris Baskind
Baratunde - I agree with you. Gillmor is a bit of a snob and very interrupty. - Dino
I've listened to a few of these shows now, and though I agree that Gillmor is very rude and agressive I think he gets a very difficult job done, there are quite a few big ego's he has to deal with on his show - Stephen B
via Alert Thingy
The last few minutes of the show were funny too, where Gillmor thanked the FF guys for putting up with his BS. - Robert Scoble
known steve for years but can't listen to him podcast, to cantankerous, feel the same about mike vizard & he's a good friend :( - mike "glemak" dunn
Wasn't that rude. Though the stuff with Chris Saad - wow. I was listening live on Ustream and it was *awkward* - Jamie
Now that I'm coming down to the end of this episode. I'm glad I gave it a chance and listened to the complete episode. Gillmore raised some very good points but he is still very brutal to listen to. - Chris Rodgers
Was my first time listening to Gillmore as well. The devil's advocate, "squeaky wheel" attitude works for him to a point. Some interesting arguments got fleshed out but I don't think I could listen to him for as long as I did in this interview. Things got better when Robert was able to chime in. - James
Robert! No wonder you seem so bitter or angry lately. Get off of that show man. FIrst time listening, and it was BRUTAL! - E.B.
via Alert Thingy
I listen to the Gillmor gang for the same reason I listen to right wing radio sometimes. To remind myself that I am sane :) - Deepak
I was a long time Gang listener, but I stopped when they went to Podshow, lost Jon Udell, and started splitting the show into 18 pieces. I've tried to go back a couple of times, but I just don't enjoy Calacanis or Arrington. It's just not a thoughtful show any longer. - Ryan Toohil
@ Ryan listen to the show with Chris Messina the other day. Brilliant stuff - Jamie
Agreed. That was the best Gang I've heard in a long long time (like Ryan, I miss Udell, Carr and the likes). - Deepak
horrible quality - horrible interviewer - but it´s about FF, so I had to listen *gg*...via feedalizr - Dieter Schwarz
whoops. i left this thread for a bit. I will give the show a chance and listen through till the end in the next few days. thanks - Baratunde Thurston
