Guys, think. That's like saying you hate Jesus because of those f'ing Christians. Products are loved and hated, I understand that. It's a Ford v. Chevy thing for hillbillies. For geeks it's Mac v. MS, Linus, Atari, Whatever. Apple is like Porche or Lamborghini, a niche company for folks willing to pay more. That creates Attitude, you take time to design, you make people pay for the cachet. If you hate them because in comparison to Apple you are a schlub, I understand. But they kick butt.

I work on both systems, side by side in a production environment. I keep the Mac even though management has tried to take it twice because I maintain it unlike the Windows machine which requires a whole frickin MIS department. I have a top of the line Dell, new every year and I get it maxxed out. All the business side gets done there or I would never touch it. It's down and up and crashes and I won't even go there. Whatever experience you have, I've been in this sort of situation since 1990.

Lindsey. That's the most computer I can get for the budget. I can't exactly build one and the guys who keep it running tell me, I don't tell them. My point was more that ROI, which is what I have to show in my budget every time I justify the new Mac, clearly shows much more "up" time, even when I had a fancy Silicon Graphics machine. I am like a convert. I loves me some Macintosh.

Ed: it's what I'm doing at the moment. "Liking" things on friendfeed. Based on the amount of RT'ing of those items, I'd say a LOT of people are getting value out of them. I'm not seeing an increase in unfollows since I started doing that too.

I agree in one sense Robert. In the most natural, legitimate sense, I did respect other people's minds/opinions over my own when my tweets got several retweets (for commentary, or small news). I've broken bigger things, but expect those to go wide. I retweet others a lot too. But I do feel *I haven't had really good things RT'd, because I didn't ask.* According to @DanZarrella, asking is #1. I don't think I ever have?

techcrunch built it's popular blog on the good old journalistic standby of being first and being prolific, not on deep thorough analysis. If your job is to be first then embargo's are just an impediment and risk someone else being first. Startups need to realize that being covered on techcrunch is much less important than good technology and a solid business model, that will get everyone talking about you in this ocean of mediocre technology plays, businesses need business model and strategy to win

@Dennis Howlett word, yeah, it's an illusion that somehow your biz will take off if it get's coverage on techcrunch. You will get a lot of feedback via techcrunch comments, and some traffic but that will not sustain a business. A business model that creates value and attracts new customers is the winning formula and plenty of people want to write about that :-)

it's a great way of getting news out a lot quicker than the normal blog, usually because it's easier to write a couple of sentences than an actual well written blog. people like their news fast, simple and easy these days. also, i don't like this "i twittered first! this is my story!" BS. isn't the whole point of twitter and friendfeed to get the news out there, not for the ego?

As Richard mentions, the point of an embargo is to give a journalist time to prepare, ideally as recognition of their expertise and authority in the field. PR firms who send mass embargoed releases to writers with whom they don't have a relationship miss the point, but of course they're also missing the point when they spam and pester. As Twitter - or even RSS - becomes more common and people can get a direct line to news they want, this won't be an issue. And outlets like TechCrunch will lose relevance.

Interesting take, but I'd be surprised if that's it. Arrington just wants more exclusives, plain and simple. Exclusives drive more traffic, and there's not a huge amount of value in writing up every story when 20 other sites are doing the same thing. Even if they lose 50% of incoming stories, but get a 10% rise in exclusives, it will more than compensate for any loss....

The Economist should get on twitter so they can learn about the future of communication and stop writing misinformed articles about blogging :-) They need to take care of their blogs and podasts as well, they create tonnes of amazing audio content that is barely shared because it's been so badly implemented :-) Social media itself is an amazing living breathing economy as well that they would do well to apply some economic theory to as well.

Find and follow people who are talking about the news and politics. Use it as a platform to promote use of and conversation around the Economist debates series (which is the most interesting thing they are doing at the moment). There's a real opportunity to ope the debates to a wider community.

Connection to YouTube is insecure. YT whines about it, but lets it go through if you allow it. Still, c'mon, if there's a secure way to do it, as YT suggests, why not do it that way? ... Also, Upcoming support doesn't seem to work. Won't link up with my user name, nor the ID number.

Anthony: Kyte lets me record on a FlipCam and upload later (I can use cell phone, webcam, FlipCam, our HD cams, etc, Qik only lets me use cell phone). Also Kyte has better distribution/better player. Also Kyte has a better chat room.

A few seconds ago I finished watching your video, and I'm blow away by the potential of this app. It reminds me of a semantic Firefox addon called Headup, that has been inserted into a browser and spiced up with added communication features. I agree with Rafe. I wanted to like it as well but I found it to be the equivalent of a social media bloomberg terminal. Too much happening, having multiple streams update with the same post, etc. Found it not usable. I rarely just sit in front of one UI and just watch scrolling updates like that where it is my sole focus.

@Henry Rubbish. The well off in this country pay some of the lowest taxes in the free world and STILL constantly whine about it. Through the longest sustained period of economic growth in the US (late 40s through the early 60s) the top marginal tax rate was 91%. Now it's 35%. There have been two times in the 20th and 21st centuries that it was below 50%. In the years leading up to the Great Depression and in the last 20 years. Seems obvious to me that low taxes on the wealthy are bad for the economy.

Or, how do you distribute your goods? BECAUSE of "wealth redistribution." North Carolina gave Dell something like $300 million in tax breaks to move a plant there (that they are now closing). just changed my settings to only include the material I post *to* FriendFeed vs. all the comments I make *on* FF. Comments come across in Twitter out of context and for an active FF person would tend to push too much craziness into their Twitter stream.

@Deva - you're right. You're asking a great question It reminds me of why AOL survived its breakdowns in the late 90's. You had your email with AOL, and getting everyone to switch to a new email was painful. AOL was also a great experience at the time for a lot of folks, much like (when working) Twitter is today.

i wonder if the majority of twitter users use it simply for sending and receiving asynchronous updates and never for interactive conversations. if they do that and use a client other than the twitter website, most times they would have no idea there were ever any problems
