I'm impatiently waiting for the new lists. Till then, I'm sticking with Twibes and even trying to get @NaNoWriMo to start a Twibe.
- Dennis Jernberg
Its not stagnant they just sit quietly and let everyone else design build the innovations - nice life actually
- WarLord
The lists won't add much without the ability to effectively follow a conversation. It's 2009, one shouldn't need to work so hard to follow a conversation on a website.
- Andy Bakun
Twitter's beauty is that it +isn't+ a conversation tool. If you want a conversation on Twitter link here to FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I really long for the list feature. I use a desktop client most of all to make groups of interest. It is really useful and makes Twitter an extremely powerful tool.
- Kurai (ff)
Groups that are client-side suck compared to lists that are built in. You will soon see why.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
that's why I look forward for the feature :)
- Kurai (ff)
Too bad twitter is used as a conversation tool.
- Andy Bakun
Unless you mean a conversation is only one back and forth.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I am positively surprised to see the full tweet-conversation on twitters web interface. Things seem to be moving forward ^^
- James Kuypers
Is one of those features staying up for more than 24 hours in a row? 'Cause that would be awesome. ;) Seriously though, there are tons of features that Twitter could add (like a geo sort or "select all/follow") that would be non-intrusive but super helpful.
- Aaron Strout
I'd prefer they actually work on performance instead of little features.
- Spencer
I hope there's some money in that list
- Houseofmax
I'm always a bit skeptical reading reports from places like Gartner when they claim to know that some company will have "13.7" percent of a market or sell "62.25" million devices two years from now. It is false precision and their willingness to make these numbers up, makes me wonder what else they make up. Anyone ever do a study on Gartner on how far off their predictions actually are?

Think Progress » Former Bushie: Rumsfeld tried to edit his own ‘Wika-wakka’ page, Rove spread rumors about a U.S. senator. - http://thinkprogress.org/2009...

"– While Karl Rove was appearing on Fox News and writing op-eds as an independent political analyst, he was privately smearing Democrats. “Karl spread rumors through the White House that one of Obama’s potential vice presidential running mates — and a United States senator — had beaten his first wife. ‘Karl says it’s true,’ the president assured a small group of staffers. Then knowing Karl, he quickly added, ‘Karl hopes it’s true,” reports Latimer."
- Steven Perez
"– For a commencement address at Furman University in spring 2008, Ed Gillespie wanted to insert a few lines condemning gay marriage. Bush called the speech too “condemnatory” and said, “I’m not going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can’t get married.” (Of course, Bush ran his 2004 campaign telling that kid just that.)"

And of course, "Wika-wakka" is already mentioned on Rumsfeld's Wikipedia entry.

"If analyst Laura Martin is right, Hulu is the demon seed that will wipe out the network television business as we know it. In a new report, the Soleil Securities analyst estimates that the online video hub will cost TV networks $920 per viewer in advertising if their audiences are cannibalized by Hulu. And she believes the bulk of viewing on Hulu is indeed taking eyeballs from TV."
- Brad Williamson
from Bookmarklet
I agree with Laura Martin: I came to a similar conclusion the first week Hulu appeared on the net. A few questions: 1. At what price should Hulu be currently valuated? 2. Is Hulu a more valuable property than Twitter? 3. Will Google/Youtube and/or Bing pull the rug out from under Hulu?
- Sean McBride
I doubt either Youtube or Bing have the content contracts to compete with Hulu.
- Andrew C
Maybe Google (Youtube) and Microsoft (Bing) should get into the TV and movie production business.
- Sean McBride
How is Hulu a threat to TV Networks, it's a threat to the people who syndicate the channels through their medium, cable and satellite providers. The networks are the ones who own Hulu, they are making money no matter what, so it can't be a threat.
- Jimminy
Jimminy, that's true, but the ad revenue isn't there. The same spot on Hulu, even if it is the ONLY advertiser on a show or movie is just not commanding the type of revenue that would come from even one commercial on air.
- James Ferguson
True, but it also isn't as costly to broadcast either, you aren't broadcasting continuously even if there is barely anyone watching, once you factor that in, it's a more rational medium, to save money, the networks aren't going anywhere for now, so they will just be syndicating the shows, and are likely to be gaining more revenue that they otherwise would be. You have to figure out how many viewers they have lost to Hulu, and if that loss affects the advertising they provide on their syndication.
- Jimminy
That may be true, but even if the viewer leaves the broadcast and watches an episode on Hulu, where the network still makes money, it's a fraction of the amount they'd make in broadcast. Jeff Zucker, President of NBC, said something along the lines of "I'm trading broadcast dollars for digital pennies."
- James Ferguson
This gets down to the reality that advertisers won't pay very much for online ads (compared to TV or print ads), and IMO this is because the first outfits that sold online ads set the price very low, establishing a mental anchor point that has proven pretty much impossible to move.
- Andrew C
tho, the reality is that adverts on TV are also falling in value. As more people look to the net for their entertainment, you can bet the money spent in advertising will go up as a result. The BBC iplayer, 4oD, ITV online and five.tv on demand are all doing fine, tho they complain about the BBC because they can fund it in other ways.
- alphaxion
But, premium advertising is still a supply and demand business, as Hulu grows, and it's ad positions remain fairly low in their availability, the price will rise higher. I have no doubt that in time these spots will increase, though I doubt they will become as lucrative as the TV ads.
- Jimminy
What role will networks play in a future in which TV and movie production companies can sell their product directly to consumers? Will disintermediation come into play here? Who needs the networks?
- Sean McBride
@sean effectively, they could provide old school "portal" sites such as hulu where people could discover content and pay for high production quality content... As a content producer, I know it's damn hard to get anyones attention, a site with the kinda traffic hulu gets would be great for the promotion (since they're very skilled in that) and featuring of that content. Ideally, I'd like...
- alphaxion
So: Hulu, Youtube and Bing are already aggregating portal sites. And TV and movie production companies could market and deliver their product directly through these sites, without any intermediaries. Right? Who needs the traditional networks? Am I missing something obvious here?
- Sean McBride
aside from that hulu is owned by the networks. From personal experience, youtube is a festering hole (you should see the comments and messages I get) and since I'm not a well known producer nor do I have a cute kittens only production I don't stand a chance of getting on their featured page. The TV networks have a lot of experience with promoting content, it's a set of skills that are...
- alphaxion
@Sean - the money Hulu can bring in right now is dwarfed by traditional TV.
- Andrew C
True -- for now. But that picture is changing rapidly. Traditional newspapers bring in more money than their Web incarnations, but it is not likely that they will survive.
- Sean McBride
hmm, unless Hulu makes its own channel, I will see then

News: In case of switch-over, Johnny Worthington and I are going to move in together to a remote mountain range, where we will recreate FriendFeed with pads of paper and pen.
I am finally gonna get those 'Like' moo stickers printed and just walk around 'Liking' random stuff.
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Johnny, I love that. Much like during the initial years of my Sims addiction I measured my life by green bars, I constantly want to like things that I see.
- joey
Joey... I'll dig the artwork out tonight and post it here... I also have a Hide one :)
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Hahahaha I'd be out of control with the 'hide' stickers.
- joey
Nowhere would be remote enough...feral FFers would track you down and then you'd be forced to split them into groups. I mean rooms. No, groups. Er...whatever.
- WorldofHiglet
Akiva, we will write you. The hardest part will be finding a way to send you a DM without Johnny seeing.
- Louis Gray
WoH. using my pieces of paper I would create lists for everyone that showed up. Then, each list would be assigned a certain stick and all those on that list would only be allowed to talk to me once I was holding that stick. If you say something offensive, the stick would then be turned into the block tool at great swiftness. I would draw pictures of my daughter on the walls of a nearby...

The problem is, we only have room for 1 Scoble... We will either let you guys pick between Robert and Alex or we will cover them both with honey and the first one not to get eaten by a bear gets in... (My money's on Alex, Robert would be to busy tweeting on his iRock)
- Johnny Worthington
if Robert was on his iPhone, chances are that Alex would be reconfiguring the rocks in the caves to give optimal stereo for his conch recitals
- WorldofHiglet
I'm thinking for DMs we scrunch up bits of paper and throw them at each other. Either that or we... you know... actually talk to each other...
- Johnny Worthington
I know... a bit to radical. Maybe we save that for the 3.0 Beta UI
- Johnny Worthington
Yeah, actually vocal communication might be taking things a bit far. Perhaps some semi-coherent grunts? You know, like listening to FFundercats?
- WorldofHiglet
And finally, we would allow Twitter imports... We would throw open the windows and let the little blue bird's song drift into the cabin... Then we would hunt them for food with blow darts...
- Johnny Worthington
That would be great - every FailWhale would feed us for weeks!
- WorldofHiglet
erm...what happens to Josh....? Or are you assuming the FailWhales won't appear in the beginning...?
- WorldofHiglet
this thread has everything required to make an EPIC video like that Hitler FF downfall vid :D
- vijay
Excellent, vijay, I expect to see it when I awake in a few hours! :) Not that I'm going to sleep. Obviously. Because when you sleep, Louis creeps through your threads and swallows up all your posts and likes and comments, absorbing, learning, *feeding* - the very epitome of friendFEED. I fear for Johhny.....
- WorldofHiglet
I was avoiding your feed specifically, little Higgles.
- Louis Gray
Most people do, Louis! ;) (and I've never been called Higgles before - that's a new one! Though I know you know that, because you would. With the feed eating and all. Happy nomming)
- WorldofHiglet
There's only one flaw in this plan ... Actually, no, I double checked, it's 100% sound - pure gold. VC funding will arrive in the morning wrapped around a stone with will be hurled in through the cabin window. Godspeed.
- Micah Wittman
I think you are going to need to be somewhere that can accept large mail drops as the comments start flowing in to your new system.
- Travis Koger
What if FriendFeed was done entirely in a Second Life/Sims World and to comment and post you would have virtual verbal conversations. I can only think about the crowd of 50,000ish followers that would be walking around Robert Scoble and then interacting with the other FF big names. The funny thing is that actually we would all need to be on the same island so we could all talk together. Of course then it would be overrun by DEA and FBI trying to take down the cult.
- Travis Koger
FriendFeed in Second Life? Wouldn't it be quickly overwhelmed by flying genitalia, then?
- DGentry
DGentry... isn't it already... no.. wait. Sorry I am talking about something else. =P Oh also you forgot the phrase 'overly large' in your genitalia reference!
- Travis Koger
call it what you want. it won't matter. you'll be wrongly identified and targeted as Taliban supporters. The last thing you will hear is a high pitched screeching sound. Then *poof* - you are gone. 250 miles away, the crew of a US Battleship will mark the mission as a success. Then they will secure and store their new BAE Systems 32 Megajoule Electromagnetic Rail Gun (32-MJ LRG) because 'officially', it doesn't exist. My suggestion: Don't go to the mountains.

- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
Crashes for me. Plus, it's just too much on the page. Somehow it's a lot of the stuff I don't care about and then too little of what I do care about and I can't be bothered to see if I can change settings to deal with it.
- Kate
Because just like in high school, sometimes the sweaty jock who doesn't wash his hands after using the john still gets the best girl - while those of us who carried her books and wrote her poetic love letters and timed our walking to go by her locker at just the right time find ourselves on the outside looking in again." You nailed it Louis!
- Steve
Nice post, Louis. Was waiting to see what you'd write. :)
- Kali
My immediate reaction was Facebook will push ads onto their users. I think FriendFeed could be seriously screwed up with live moving ads, so that's hopefully out of the picture from a purely usability view. Friendfeed is all about realtime web information. I then wonder how in that case will the monetise the relationship. My guess? Facebook will show live conversations and hopefully they will rip out the poor IM implementation in Facebook. The purchase may be nothing more sinister, I hope...
- Mark Aitken
Well said Louis. This is the big question.
- Mark Krynsky
Okay, so now I'm ready to cry. Excellent post, Louis. Thank you!
- Ladybug Heather
Excellent, you've captured my sentiment very well. Mark - I disagree. FF is an excellent platform for floating ads based upon our behavior, and it is just about the only platform in existence where the algorithms for ad placement could have been done right - and welcomed.
- jcunwired
Louis's reaction is the one I most wanted to see. Thanks for not disappointing us, man!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
"FriendFeed is the one that has a 4.0 GPA and had big dreams of an Ivy League diploma. And yet, she ends up with you - the Silicon Valley equivalent of your local state school. I'm *loving* the high school stereotypes as metaphor, btw.
- anna sauce
jcunwired - I hope it's unobtrusive, don't mind people making money, but lets hope it's sensible. My worst fear is FF is seen as a threat and silenced, but I'd doubt Zuckerberg would be so brash..
- Mark Aitken
Brilliantly said. Don't think it could have been said better!

I just learned about this minutes ago. Louis it's not 4 big companies. there will only be three after Microsoft merges/acquires Facebook and Google buys Twitter. This move makes perfect sense for Facebook and it's what their SocialTV initiative needed to really work. I see big things for it in Facebook's future. I don't know how I feel about it though!
- Michael Fidler
Somebody wrote that this is just about getting FF's tech talent. Don't you love how all these social networks conveniently forget who it is who makes them valuable?

- Sheryl
I agree with Sheryl. We'll be watching. In my very quick Tweet earlier, I said this really narrows the choices and flings the door wide open for disruptive competition. In many ways, I see this as proof positive that the winner in the battle royale for microblogging (orwhatever we choose to call this services) is Company X, as yet a sleeper who will disrupt the landscape significantly.I don't think it will be a known player. At least not one known in this space.

Life streaming via Friendfeed I always felt like a kind of a partner investing something of me in something greater... Now I discover that this investment counts for nothing. Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
@#$& that's all I have to say. For now.

Facebook should have been aquired by Friendfeed. Why they hell would you give up your better product to a worse one? Did none of you give a shit about this service to begin wiht?

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.

Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -

Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- Zio Bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?

"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB.
- Rutger Blom
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- jcunwired
Now I can break my Internet plan at home.
- DarkBls
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF.
- Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens.
- Jason Huebel
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF.
- Rutger Blom
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Well, I guess it is time to dismantle my friendfeed. We all know where this is headed. So, so glad I didn't move all my rss feeds from greader to friendfeed like so many cheerleaders suggested.
- Matthew Speicher
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms.
- Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner

I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
Once again. I'm happy for the FF team. They worked hard and now collect. That's fair. Wonder if they're sitting in a bubble pool drinking champagne while we cry out here ;-)
- Rutger Blom
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

FAIL. Facebook is the new myspace, and now friendfeed will become a part of that BS. Can't say I'm too surprised because eventually we all sell out. BTW I don't see friendfeed lasting more than the rest of this year, if that. - Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

- Martynas
Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.
- Ru Viljoen

By building communities of friends with similar (and different) interests I've been exposed to some of the most amazing people and content, and amassed a good bit of information that I often refer to via Friendfeed search. As an early adopter its been the most amazing of experiences, and I've been wielding a mouse...

- jcunwired
Yep. Excellent assessment. I've been seeing posts here about the FriendFeed community being migrated over to Facebook, but that really doesn't make any sense to me. Facebook has always been more about people you actually know on a more personal level -- and regardless of whether your friends lists there reflect that, the way the system is designed does -- whereas FriendFeed facilitates meeting a much wider range of people. Both systems have their place, so I can't see Facebook eliminating one or the other.

"the new message indicates Microsoft is getting serious about the effort, digging into many nitty-gritty aspects of the proposed specification. That's important because Microsoft has of late embraced a standard-centric philosophy when it comes to what technology IE supports, and IE is of course the dominant browser on the market. Microsoft declined to comment for this story. Google, Apple, and Mozilla have been trumpeting HTML 5 features in their latest browsers, but Microsoft takes a more cautious tone."

- Ryan - @magicofpi
I don't buy the whole story. Wouldn't HTML 5 render Silverlight obsolete?
- jcunwired
Silverlight would still be used for Netflix and other services that want to keep their video content under wraps. As for WMV, MS once said something about allowing the browser to tap into the OS's rendering framework, but I'm hazy on the details
- LANjackal
from IM
@jcunwired no. it should in theory, but the real "win" of silverlight is the development environment. a bit like GWT on steroids.
- mjc
"The IE team is reviewing the current editor's draft of the HTML5 spec and gathering our thoughts." They are only at the gathering thoughts stage! FFS. If MS continue to ship their browser in step with the OS, that means that we *might* see something in about 3 years time. Great :(
- Paul Grav
@Paul: Maybe the actual standard is ready by then, anyway. HTML5 is still a draft, so there is no hurry.
- Jemm
The standard not being finalised hasn't stopped other vendors from implementing parts of the HTML spec.
- Paul Grav
The problem with implementing draft standard is that when they change, there will be different implementations everywhere and nobody knows when they'll get fixed.
- Jemm
Again, that argument hasn't stopped Apple, Google, Opera and Mozilla from implementing the canvas tag and the video tag. That's just two examples.
- Paul Grav
So what? No point using them as they wouldn't work on all browsers anyway (video uses different codecs in the mentioned browsers, for example).
- Jemm
The fact that there is no suggested codec has not and should not stop vendors from implementing the video tag. Waiting until there's consensus or a recommended codec would just needlessly hold back progress.
- Paul Grav
I think the W3C couldn't make a choice and threw the ball at browser vendors, so some browsers will support only OGG (while big vendors avoid it), some will support only H.264 and Microsoft probably WMV/H.264 (like Silverlight does).

LAN, you didn't see it coming 'cause it ain't going anywhere. Lipservice/ trial balloon to see how it plays in the bleachers. At most HTML5 with DTD=MSFT, uniformly borked elsewhere.

IMO, I don't think what HTML5 offers in its current incarnation has full feature parity with what Silverlight, or for that matter, Flash has to offer today. And in three years time, when HTML5 becomes a standard, there will likely be at least be two more iterations of Silverlight and Flash. I don't think HTML5 is a serious competitor to RIA runtimes like Silverlight/Flash yet.
- Jonathan Wong
You're quite right there when it comes to functional parity between native built-in parser and third-party runtime enviros such as Flash or Silverlight, HTML5 is not yet a contender there. However, just as practically everything you can do now with client-side Javascript could equally well be achieved with runtime-embedded (e.g.) Actionscript parser of the Flash, there really is no good justification for doing it in this fashion other than, perhaps, for code-encryption reasons.

about time Microsoft cares about standards they haven't in the past and it's created havoc. Glad to have them aboard
- Seth Goldstein
Really, it's in Microsoft's best interests to pay more attention to the standards. This doesn't sound strange to me at all.

So I don't (and won't) use an iPhone but this whole rejection confused me from the get go. Google Voice (and Grand Central before it) was always a web app. All iPhones (presumably) have Internet access. So why not just go that way. In fact, that's probably true for most apps that don't really need to be phone resident.

Now, a source close to the situation tells us that Twitter, Facebook, and Google (Google) – all rivals in the realm of social networking – are working together to determine the root of what has been exposed as a deliberate and simultaneous attempt to take down some of the web’s most popular social media sites.

One of the issues in killing IE6 in the enterprise is "Deploying Firefox in the Enterprise" and you do not need to look much further than Mozilla itself http://wiki.mozilla.org/Enterpr... "This page was last modified on 20 February 2009". Michael Kaply http://www.kaply.com has advocated and worked on this issue and as he stated in last December...

hehe--according to james t. and david we web folk will eventually boot out all M$ browsers...

My sentiment is not specific to MS but is more general - Life is just too short to waste time pulling your hair out in order to support any browser that does it's own thing instead of supporting standards to the extent which IE6 does. IE7 is not quite as bad but it still causes a certain amount of unnecessary pain. Checking a site in development on Chrome, Safari and Firefox is a pretty surprise free process these days - the same cannot be said for IE7.

The Adobe Updater tells me it wants to update Acrobat every couple of days, but never manages it. Sounds like my uncle George that will come by to fix the back light.

And it keeps wanting to install Yahoo toolbar. What possible useful connection could there be between these two products?
- Joel Webber
yeah, not as bad as google update, but still nasty

It's a terrible piece of software. Also essential: there's a really bad Flash exploit they just patched two days ago.

Agreed its on the same level as Clippy
