Maybe things work differently there, but here tax assessed value is always lower than actual appraised value, by as much as 20%. Here's hoping it's the same for you.

It's the house value that went down...not the home value. The value of the housing market isn't of much consequence until you trade down or sell up entirely. The assessors value will go up again soon enough. In the mean time enjoy the extra cash. It's still the same home with the same family in it.

Your primary residence isn't an investment. Without it, you'd be paying rent. Now, you're paying rent (in the form of a mortgage) at a higher rate but you wind up with some of that "rent" stored up at the end.

That's only relevant if you bought it at a price between the higher appraisal amount and the currently lowered value or (big OR) if you refinanced or took out a second mortgage and the total mortgaged value is at anything above the currently lower value. But if you bought the home at a price lower than the new value and haven't refinanced then you're fine, you never really had the value...

That assumes your home will NEVER go back up in value which is not the case. Statistically you should be back up in 5 - 7 years. By the time your mortgage is paid off you should be up quite a bit. Chrome OS = Android 2.0 for large laptop screens, Google Voice on Android and White Spaces will kill the $1 Trillion Telecom and ISP industry, you should talk about those ARM processor based netbooks that are coming out with Chrome browser in the next few months, they will take over the whole laptop market and start costing $150 with no contracts.

RE: balance. Since nobody's perfect, here's the equation I keep in mind: the success and length of a relationship is directly proportional to the amount of tolerance you have for the other party. How much pleasure does he get out of making other people happy. The black box that takes situations as inputs and outputs emotion is called the "heart" and that's what you have to look at.

I've been wishing for decades that more women would train their sons properly. Every now and then, I'll run into a guy who says his mother trained him right. I think most parents take the "boys will be boys" approach. Of course, my thinking may be biased by what I observed around me.

Guys think to the point, Women think around the point. For example the classic "Are you okay?" and the women says yes with certain tone. We hear yes so we think 1) You want us to leave you alone or 2) You are okay. Which usually is not the case. When people talk about relationships I go back to that question. I personally suck at it cause I'm like a dense wall with women sadly.

Leo should add a clause that says " TWIT is no responsible for any violation of NDA's or any other legal bindings." It is quite dangerous when people slip and forget they are on camera.

I enjoy listening and watching Leo, Dvorack, etc. when it comes to technology discussions. The more I see the higher echelon of FF and Twitter talk about politics, the more I wish there was a filter I could apply. I mean, this was just a funny picture that gives Obama supporters another means to look down on people who do not support Obama, but I've seen Dvorack's outrageous blog post about Palin's children, and I've read Scoble's mistatements regarding Huckabee's speech at the convention.

The democrats' signs were much slicker. With every speaker at the DNC they passed out new ones -- there were hillary ones, biden ones, michelle etc. all beautifully printed on nice sanded sticks. Not a hand painted sign in the crowd, all the perfectly the same, and no chance for a misspelling. Good stagecraft. The hand painted signs make me cringe from a design/spell check pov, but they are authentic.

Geez, Mark, maybe you could lighten up a little. The Republicans were commenting on the headline, which was perhaps uncharitable and directed at them. I think Leo is great, and I think Dvorak has no problem taking care of himself. They are completely entitled to their opinions outside the world of tech. That's why I subscribe to them. I was using a business calling card to call Roz's Iridium satellite phone. I had no idea it would cost $13.80 per minute until I got the first bill. Of course by then I had racked up over $10,000 in calls. It costs Roz only $1/minute to call me from the sat phone, so that's how we're doing it now. I should have, of course, checked the tariff. I even remember reading some time ago that calling card calls are the most expensive out there. Fortunately, AT&T knocked it down to the lowest rate available.

I don't get the big Hoopla. FriendFeed is a Commenting System and a Medium to get Content on. Twitter is a Messaging system. Sure you can (pressed enter here accidentally) 'switch over', but really, Twitter could be thought to be something completely different than friendfeed

I'd like to see more of my twitter friends using a "lifestream" commenting system like FF, or see Twitter turn reliable and then add a better threading system for replies.. but until someone gets their act together I am happy using something that has the capability to do very similar things. So I'm happy to be caught up in the current migration toward a meme that works. Update: and one that is editable;-)

I found myself doing this a couple weeks ago. Every time I wanted to go to twitter it was down, so I just started using ping.fm to post, and following all my feeds of FF. I agree with the ease of conversation on FF.

FF definitely has some nice advantages over Twitter (or probably more over Jaiku for that matter) which people with tons of scattered content can benefit from. On the other hand there are still tons of features I'd love to see added here (esp. on an API level). In the meantime, FF just has to hit the web-mainstream ;-)

I would like FF a lot more if it pulled in my friends from other services. As of right now, all it really seems to do is aggregate my lifestream. I'm too lazy to manually add each rss feed to FF, and there's no way my friends are going to sign up for FF, after it was a giant PITA to get them to sign up for twitter.

There are several guides, linked to in this very thread and others available by googling that give you the info you need to set it up so they can have the freedom of using twitter, etc... and let you have the option of moving.. @Brian Carter was that person me ;) ? I think this weekend showed how friend feed can fill the void of being connected and following the thoughts of those who we have grown to trust online. Since then, I have noticed that the traffic on twitter (at least for me) has gone down significantly by the people I was following and didn't really know in person or know well. My inner circle are still using twitter and the mobile factor is still huge. The real question is can I still be active on FF while at work.

Reasons desktop app for friendfeed is not as usable as webpage: 1. usually quicker to navigate high volume on web page. 2. desktop app will surely be chasing new functionality (i.e. retwitter comment feature on FF web but not in twhirl).
