I'm over in China reading this. At the Chinese blogger conference they had Twitter and FriendFeed up on the screens here. They love American brands. They love Obama. They also want a great future and know they are in a deep hole regarding the environment (the government here is spending billions to improve, but the problem is so deep it will take trillions to solve here in China, not to mention in India, South America, and Middle East. - Robert Scoble
First "Global President"? - Chris Herbert
Chris: he has the opportunity to be, yes. Obama stuff over here is a status symbol and I'm seeing that in other countries too. - Robert Scoble
While Obama already declared that he is going to close Guantanamo and withdraw troops from Iraq, I am not sure as to the results that he will achieve during his 4-year term. Obama accumulated too much hype and hope and if he but lives any inch less to that hype his image and standing will suffer. Bigger problems will notbe solved in as easy or as short time as people think and he can but initiate those changes, given he is perseverant enough to go against 40 years of American establishments and traditions. - Hayk
I have many relatives in Germany and I was amazed at how closely they followed this year's election and by how much they supported Obama. If he isn't the first global president, he is at least a global phenomenon. - Bob Blunk
@Hayk, the wave of change that is sweeping the country isn't just about Obama. This is the most important message that he brings to the table. His presidency is just the first round. - Bob Blunk
nice, bob blunk, it is indeed a phase transition under way in the collective consciousness - Gregory Lent
Bob, that is what I meant. He is the rainmaker - that is if he becomes as successful in his results as his election campaign was. He initiated, by his campaign, the mind shift or, as Gregory said, collective consciousness change, and this is very important. What is certain, however, is that Obama will have lot of resistance from homeland security and other fields where he plans cut offs or shortings, and this resistance will be very serious. - Hayk
Robert, I'm working in Kowloon and will let you and RocManUSA catch up on your rest before flying back. Enjoyed the conversation and will see you in SV soon. - Paul Denlinger

Twitter is nosense as a valuable asset. How can be differentiated with zillions of future clones? Instead looking at friendfeed, and beyond the UI, I understand they have built an excelent backend/infrastructure. - Sebastian Wain
People said the same thing about Youtube. I kind of doesn't matter any more. As long as twitter doesn't cannibalize its developers like Facebook did they will remain the leader in the space. - David Dundas via twhirl
What does "leader in the space" mean when you don't make any money? - Jason May
Most users, brand equity/mindshare, potential to monetize, as well as most likely aquisition target. Again you forget Youtube was making no money at the time either. There are too many developers and VCs involved in this one for it to tank. When huge brands like CNN, Reader's Digest, even Wachovia Bank all have twitter accounts. It's hard to deny the value that it has created. - David Dundas via twhirl

Weebly scores 1 million users, reaches profitability
November 3 at 7:21 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Weebly, an AJAX-based drag and drop web page creator, today announces it has reached a million registered users — and perhaps more importantly — that the three-year-old company is now profitable. The San Francisco, Calif.-based start-up, seeded with $650k by Ron Conway (who participated in our Downturn Event VC Panel) and other angel investors including seed fund Y Combinator, in June launched two products to help bring in revenue: The first was professional accounts (versions that users actually have to pay for), the second was Google AdSense integration into sites built using Weebly." - imabonehead via Bookmarklet

Think about what happened through the last cycle. Start with AWS. In the 1990s, Internet companies had to own everything top to tail. Today you can use Amazon and other services to pop up a new box for hundreds of dollars, if that. Thats a huge shift, and it's also a shift towards interdependency. - David Dundas

part because they're more often brick-and-mortar shoppers, African-Americans are more influenced by in-store promotions than the general population. They are more likely to visit more stores while shopping, but are less influenced by sales and discounts. And they are more likely to cite themselves as trendsetters and influencers when it come - David Dundas
