It's silly to have to respond to stuff like that, but your take is insightful and appreciated. Plus, another Cyndy blog I get to subscribe to! - Mark Trapp
I'm glad you've chosen to make your side of the story visible and that it's so clear you care about the people involved as well. I know you're a great writer and a great mom as well. I hope all works out. I'll keep reading you wherever you end up writing. - Louis Gray
i think i will have a response to the initial mashable post this weekend - really disappointed in mashable on that post. - Allen Stern
It's great they gave you a chance, I like your pieces. It's also great you handled this respectfully. But when lots of people bolt at once, it's not high school, or rocket science. Like Louis though I will keep reading you. - Robert Seidman
Thanks Robert. That does mean a lot. I just think that there is a professional and tactful way of handling this without hurting people. I also don't like the fact that l wasn't contacted to give my side of the story, nor that it makes me look like a flake who bolts like a recalcitrant child when I don't get my way. - Cyndy
It certainly wasn't my intention to paint you, as you put it, as a recalcitrant child. I think if one of you left over pay/hours/workload, that might be the image (and it would be less newsworthy). When the entire staff leaves, it is newsworthy, and it looks like it's a problem with management, not staff. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I confess I read it exactly as Mark describes it. You being a pouting child sooo doesn't jibe with my view of you that I'd have filtered it out if it did say that. You'll complain about products and services (as you should!) but I don't ever recall seeing you complain about your lot in life. - Robert Seidman
I don't think Mark penned the hateful piece some of you seem to think he did. It wasn't a look into the minds or intentions of the writers. It was meant to raise the question, "What happened here?" He did that, and I think he did it in a professional manner. - Triston McIntyre
Cyndy you really are awesome and truly enjoy your down to earth style and thoroughness in your work. I especially respect you for raising 4 children, that's no easy task! I've been out of the loop on this Profy thing and it doesn't sound good. I hope you find a fantastic place to land that makes you happy! I still want to meet with you and Jason someday; afterall, we're in Rochester! Good Luck and keep in touch! - Susan Beebe
Are you guys in Rochester -- as in ROCHESTER rochester? Might give me a reason to move back. Cyndy the standard needs you, God knows, so go forth and make it work. As for the four kids and writing career mix, you rock. - jeneane sessum
Jeneane - Yup, Rochester, NY the real deal! I love it. This place rocks. I just enjoyed one of the most beautiful days here. I live on the Irondequoit Bay and am only 5 minutes from 3 lakes too!! soo cool! very pretty here! check out my Flickr stream to see some local pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/s... - Susan Beebe
GET. OUT. born and raised there. have some country sweet wings for me. I hope to be up in October for my nephew's wedding -- would love to meet you guys. - jeneane sessum
Sure, I'm away for half a day, and you quit? Yikes. Guess I'll wander over to Mashable and see what's up. I think it goes without saying I'll be reading too. Your blog post was refreshing. No name calling, calling out, or freaking out. There's been way too much of that lately. - Charlie Anzman
OMG, Jeneane!! I just checked your LinkedIn and not only were you here, but you went to FISHER! As a CommJ/English major? Wendell. Howard. ;) - Cyndy
Jeneane - Cool! Niki Black and I just started the Social Media Club here in Rochester. In fact yesterday, I just created the Facebook page for us. http://www.new.facebook.com/gr... ... I'd love to have you meet all the local SM folks here in Rochester!! Hopefully Cyndy and I can meet you in October!! that would be fun!! - Susan Beebe
@Cyndy GET. OUT. Proietti, Skip, Lou Bataglia, Dr. Howard, Gerry McCarthy, Ken. Mason. Are we talkin? Hey, I've even got the obligatory 5 years at Kodak. Yeah guys I really have to get there this fall now!!! Off to facebook... - jeneane sessum
Jeaneane, I didn't stay in Comm/J long... didn't do very well with Lauren. ;) Doc Howard was my advisor, though. Danced Teddi. Went to Patim's. :D - Cyndy
maybe we should do a central ny startup event - i know utica and went to school in oneonta - i know its not as far as rochester - Allen Stern
I'm jeneane.sessum@gmail.com - can't wait to hopefully meet you all soon. Yeah, Lauren. It was Lauren's first year when I had her. What a dolt. I double majored - the English dept was my real home. Dr. Mason was the man. Dr. Howard took care of my piano when I couldn't move it to my apartment. I still keep in touch with Gerry McCarthy. ;-) Ok... i guess I've taken this a teensy bit OT. - jeneane sessum
Jeneane - YES you do have to come here!! :-) I like Allen's idea too...I'd drive to Utica to meet ya!! - Susan Beebe
Allen, I'm in. I have friends who live in Utica (some even admit it) -- I think that would be awesome. Fall is a nice time to be anywhere in western/central NY. - jeneane sessum
i havent been up there since i came to a reunion near utica probably 10 yrs ago - Allen Stern
I'm betting it hasn't changed much. It doesn't. That's both the charm and the challenge. - jeneane sessum
Allen I didn't know you did Georgia and NY - that's my DNA. I'm in Atlanta currently. It changes too much. - jeneane sessum

"In the mid to late 1990s, perception had it there was no more exciting a career title than that of Webmaster. It seemed everybody wanted to be one." Um, no. - Chris White
enjoyed the career advice to hang on to teaching or marketing skills even if giving in to today's trendy title. - mcwflint
somebody was trying to get me to apply for a job with the title "webmaster" today! It was with a .wa.gov.au prison department, but we are not really that far behind here. One the other hand web 2.0 social media expert for prisons is not a job I would relish either. - Nick Cowie
Excellent as always Louis, I really like the "What do you really do?" part. We do have to focus on what social media brings to a real business, not just on how exciting it is to constantly refresh Twitter and FriendFeed. - Svetlana Gladkova
I love this post -- felt this way for a while and I'm sure others have too. No doubt you'll get some of the "Social Media Experts" giving you flack for it. "Web browsing expert" LOL! - Shey
I remember webmasters :) If the newer 'social people' could only bury that hatchet with some of the 'old guard', this whole environment would be a better place. - Charlie Anzman
It happended the same with Information Technology in the 80/90s. I guess there is a lifecycle typical of new technology roles: at first they are prominents in applying new technolgies to business. After some times the technical knowledge is not so exclusive anymore, and you start to look for more managerial approaches, roles and resumes. Finally the specific tech wisdom become a commodity. That's ok to me, just beware and avoid to be caught in the lifecycle commodity trap - Marcello Del Bono
agreed, good post - early days of the web - webmaster was a multi-functional jack of all things internet role: root/superuser, sysadmin, netadmin, html dev & graphic oversight all rolled into one - as teams that supported websites matured fragmentation of roles occurred for all the right reasons - webmaster at that point was usually the single point of contact into the property behind the website, especially for reporting web related bugs & for routing of inquiries - normal transitional maturity - mike "glemak" dunn
"I'm afraid that for the most part, their efforts to rebrand as social media experts will be short-lived and futile. Saying one is an expert in utilizing social media sites is akin to brand one's self as a 'Web browsing expert', an 'e-mail expert', or a 'telephone specialist'." That's pretty funny. - Hutch Carpenter
Expertize is an aging thing. What experts were proud of 20 years ago is done today by students with no "professional experience". Anyway, as I stated in a personal post, we still have to define the word expert. - Laurent Rozenfeld
I Agree. Webmasters had been more than "multi-functional jack of all things internet". To most people that did not know too much about filesystems, servers and the like, they were short of magicians (cf. Clarke's Third Law). But is the rise of social media that much about technology? I don't think so. It's more about pushing technology in the background. It's about getting rid of the magicians. So, just being able to set up a blog within a few minutes will very soon lose the magical aura. - Benedikt Koehler
The funny thing is that I - as someone who spends a significant piece of my day managing this stuff for my firm - get forwarded job postings for "Social media manager" or other such titles for $125k +. Clearly people are landing themselves jobs in marketing/PR departments with this title. How long will their jobs last? - sarahlefton
@sarah Felix America! In Germany I have not yet seen job postings for Social Media Managers. Unfortunately. - Benedikt Koehler

Coolness factor +1000 - Ross Miller
So, you wash your hands under the spigot (which is annoyingly set back), and then a trail of dirty soapy suds slowly winds its way down the spiral, so you have to run a gallon of water when you're done just to wash it all away...? And if you, say, spit into the sink after brushing your teeth, you'll probably splash places the spiral-trail of water never actually reaches at all, and then you'll have to take a washcloth and clean your sink basin. - ⓞnor
ⓞnor has a point... - Voyagerfan5761
woooha! - ※Fu※
I have a feeling kids of all ages would be dropping coins, balls, etc in there to see them roll down. - Christopher Sacca
this is art, not function. - Russellreno
If it's art, why pretend it's a sink? Why not just make it a pretty fountain somewhere, and not bother with things like a faucet handle? (Similarly, I never understood why so much ornamental pottery is trying to be a bowl or a cup or a vase. Nobody's ever going to eat out of it or put flowers into it, why limit yourself with the false pretense of functionality?) - ⓞnor
If you're going to have a sink in a guest-accessible bathroom, it might as well be something that looks nice. Yes, it's not terribly practical, but so what. Yes it's going to need some extra attention when cleaning, but so what. Someone who has an awesome sink like that is likely to have a housekeeper. @ⓞnor: It's not that it's EITHER a sink OR it's art. It's BOTH. - Cyrus Lendvay
In my view there's a balance between form and function. People are often willing to compromise on functionality in exchange for aesthetic enjoyment. This is true everywhere. 'Getting it done' and 'Feeling good about it' are always goals and in some objects those goals compete. I wouldn't want every sink to have such a focus on aesthetics, but if it was a sink in an environment where the aesthetic experience was more important then it may be a valid tradeoff. - Kevin Fox
(off-topic-friendfeed-gush): man, i love that ff can spark a heated debate with a picture of a sink! - Trent Olson
I love what you can do with concrete, although I prefer the hard lines of a ramp sink like we're doing in our downstairs bathroom: http://www.concretenetwork.com... You can embed stuff into concrete also, but I haven't thought of anything cool yet. - Chris White
I love this sink. Our ordinary sinks look pretty nasty if you don't wash them with a sponge pretty frequently, and I seriously doubt we're washing our hands or brushing our teeth in an unusual way. - Jason Wehmhoener
why can't i be rich so i can get all these cool things? - Chris Harris
@Chris Harris: Build one. Concrete isn't very expensive. We built our vanity out of a console table from Pier1 and a home made bowl from Ebay. It looks like we paid $2000 for the whole thing, but our cost was <$250. - Cyrus Lendvay
Kevin: Fair enough; mostly I was responding to Russellreno, who seemed to be saying that it wasn't legitimate to complain about functional deficits. I think it's legitimate to point those out, and also perfectly legitimate to say "yeah, yeah, but it's *so pretty*!". - ⓞnor
That's probably no fun to clean... ;-) - Justin Santamaria
I do think it would be great to have this one in the guest bathroom. Great conversation starter. - Russellreno
Chris, your concrete sinks seem pretty and functional. I like the way embedded leaves look on pottery, but on a sink it would be hard to burn them out and they probably don't match the theme you are going for. Mirrors are always handy in a bathroom, but easy to make a space go from classy to tacky. - Clare Dibble
Don't care if it's hard to clean. I have a thing for spirals. And for cool stuff. And for art. DO WANT. - Lindsay Donaghe

I admire all bloggers. It's a big challenge to blog regularly. - Ole Begemann
Commenting is easy, liking is easier. :) Seriously, I'd be willing to bet that 75+% of my blog posts are reactive, and thus are indistinguishable from comments. As time passes, however, I'm trying to launch more original posts, and even my reactive posts usually have a bit of original content. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
to me all digital forms of expression just parts of conversation-podcasting,blogging,commenting,tweeting,etc. High signal/low noise always appreciated. - Mark Forman
Ontario, I bet a lot of blog posts are also reactions to others. But the hard thing about blogging is to start a chain of reactions. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to have original content. But it does mean that the way you present your thoughts are original enough. A great comment isn't easy either, a great comment should facilitate exploration of the subject at hand. - Alexander van Elsas
while you guys were commenting here, I was writing a blog post about the same topic (before I saw Alexander's post) - maybe I should have just commented on Alexander's post given that our posts are pretty much going in the same direction... - Frederic

Sorry Frederic, @freecloud said something similar.I told him he was welcome to comment on my post too ;-) The Dutch are fast as the speed of light aren't they ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
Sometimes you start conversations sometimes you enter midstream. Imagine if you always had to start conversations or if you always had to enter midstream? - Jonathan Nguyen
what if people like your comments better than your blog posts? - Tyler Gillies
I thought that was the point of pingbacks? Excepot when the pingback looks like a carbon copy of the original article... - keif via twhirl
Jonathan, it is fine to like comments better than the original article. In that sense, I believe Fred is right that sometimes comments are really valuable and worth a full read on their own. But it is the conversations that sparks what matters to me. And that is usually sparked by a thoughtful post (although a great comment can have that inspirational effect as well). But the blog post triggers the comments. And to write such a blog post, that's what hard about blogging. - Alexander van Elsas
you folks write blog posts that are definitely conversation starters, but I'm sure you've seen others where the posts are no better than comments - just parrotting news and adding one paragraph of thought, and the whole blog post is covered with ads. - Jason Kaneshiro
I like this line: "A great commenter can’t live without a blogger willing to write down his thoughts and expose them to the greater conversation taking place." So true. And being a blogger takes courage -- you have to be willing to be a target. - Ginger Makela
@jason that is why I defined what I meant by blogging. And the example you provide, isn''t what I would call blogging either, it is more echoing "breaking news" everyone else already broke earlier ;-) "But a great blog post, no matter what it is about, makes the reader think. And that is what is so hard about blogging." - Alexander van Elsas

Trent, your #1 sends me into a fit of jealousy that has no equal. My #1 would probably be wandering into some random bar in New Orleans long ago where B.B. I was thinking about making a FriendFeed API app that where a user could use FriendFeed to read Gtalk messages and then use the Twitter API to post the messages to Twitter. It would help some of my friends that would like their Gtalk statuses posted to FriendFeed, but then then you have duplicates of every Gtalk status update. It would probably be best solved by a Jabber bot that reads the statuses. - possible248
Of course. - Eric Florenzano
I don't get it, why not just post natively in FF using "Share something"? Is it just because GTalk has more client options? - Alan Cheslow

“All of this discussion about Twitter is annoying. We all understand it is unreliable let's move on. FriendFeed or Pownce. One or the other the best thing to do is just go quiet about Twitter and let it die already!”

The discussion is more annoying than the unreliable service itself. Geez! - Franklin Pettit
