“I need a Gmail-labs feature to make the chat boxes taller.”
November 12 at 3:52 pm - Link
How much taller? And why? - Keith Coleman
In the spirit of labs giving excess options, it should probably be an option or draggable or something. I would make it about 1/2 window height. I need it because of long im messages, especially the ones from ff. - Paul Buchheit

I've started having a lot of quick 30 second - 2 minute video conversations b/c of this feature. Saves so much typing and waiting. It's actually changed the way I work. Nice job, Sweden & Seattle. - Keith Coleman via Bookmarklet
"And in the spirit of open communications, we designed this feature using Internet standards such as XMPP, RTP, and H.264, which means that third-party applications and networks can choose to interoperate with Gmail voice and video chat." Come on libpurple! - Erica Baker
Awesome! Where was this last week when I wanted to video-conference in to all the election night festivities from China? :) - Ana
I wish it didn't require installing a plugin though. I'm sure there's a good reason for it but without it working out of the box I doubt I'll ever be able to use it to chat with certain people (my Grandparents use Gmail but I don't think they'd know how to install this). - Benjamin Golub

Benjamin, you're right. And if you have to install something, why not just make it a standalone program? Like an update to the Google Talk client? My mum and sister both use Google Talk but they've never used the web interface of Gmail because they know how to use Outlook Express already. - Tony Ruscoe
no linux support yet =( - Evan Parker
Side-note: When you have Google Update installed as Firefox plugin, then clicking Google's installation button won't trigger a security dialog, but just start the installation. - Philipp Lenssen
@Evan If libpurple can get this implemented, you could just use Pidgin. - Erica Baker
A plugin? Reminds me of the original Google video. Why don't you use flash Keith? - Paul Buchheit
Tony: Updating Google Talk leaves all the Mac users out. Now if I could just get a free VNC client or something that punched through firewalls well on Macs I could install this for my parents now instead of next time I see them. - Brett Cannon

"This is why I love our readers: David, aka "Logo Fiend" has dug around United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) and found the registered work for the new Pepsi, Mtn Dew and Gatorade work. Now, this doesn't mean it will all be used or that this will be its ultimate form, but if it's been registered or trademarked it sure won't be too different. I alluded to a scoop in the previous post, but this is not it, this is a bonus! So, thanks David, and enjoy everyone." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
It's interesting to see that the Pepsi Max logo has the largest white swoosh when Pepsi is the main product. I think the difference between Pepsi and Diet Pepsi is almost logical but I would've thought Pepsi > Pepsi Max > Diet Pepsi. - Tony Ruscoe

The feature is something I've really wanted, but I can't figure out how to use it. I turned it on and tried to make a filter but the 'canned response' checkbox was greyed out and the menu says 'No canned responses'. How do I make a canned response? Also, the feedback link for the feature goes to a 404 page. - Kevin Fox
Okay, I see the 'Canned Responses' menu now in 'Compose Mail' but it would be nice to give a 'how to make a canned response' link in the filter creation flow. - Kevin Fox
Got it working now. Now I just wish the CR didn't expose my actual gmail address, letting me pick from my 'send-from' addresses. - Kevin Fox

Thanks to all the frontend engineers who made this work: "But the bigger reason this is interesting is it shows how flexible an infrastructure Google has built under Gmail. That's powerful because the company can monitor how often people use the options, and how that affects Gmail's performance and utility. And because the Gmail Labs options are largely independent of each other, Google can test many improvements simultaneously." - Keith Coleman

Typically Gmail features are only written by 'software engineers.' Ryan, who wrote the Quote Selected Text feature in this latest batch, is an SRE. Thank you thank you thank you for "gl"! I love this: "Over the last few months, we've been working with the IE engineers at Microsoft to address these issues: they released a critical update to their JavaScript implementation that fixed a performance problem with how the script engine allocates and frees memory." - Paul Buchheit
Perhaps Google won't bother addressing these challenges in future, and instead tailor everything for Chrome? - Slippy Lane
No, things will have to work with ie6 for a long time, but what they can do is make some of the enhanced features be Chrome-only (things that aren't possible in other browsers). - Paul Buchheit
That's probably a much fairer assessment, given your exposure to the aforementioned, lol. In that case, then, I suppose it's up to the boys and girls at Microsoft and Mozilla to take advantage of the opportunity and get in on the action. I imagine they're already studying the guts of chrome as hard as they can :-) - Slippy Lane
Hopefully, we'll never see "to get this cool feature in Gmail, install Chrome". A plug-in like Gears is a reasonable requirement, though. - Ionut
I wonder if that IE fix addresses the problems we've been having. Does anybody know the KB article for it? - Gabe
What is the issue Gabe? I believe the problem they fixed was with GC performance once there were a large number of objects. - Paul Buchheit
Paul: The problem is that after running for some time the app just becomes untenably slow. Our hypothesis was that the GC would run a collection on every allocation once there got to be too many objects, and we were exceeding that limit. I seem to recall you were quite skeptical at the time, Paul, because Gmail hadn't run into that problem. - Gabe

Google Talk is the worst product Google has created so far. It's product managers should be fired. - sebmos
It skips one interesting step. The idea for chat moles (named after 'whack-a-mole') came from notifications. We had little yellow notifications that would show up in the bottom corner of Gmail when you got a new IM. We wanted to be able to reply from the notification without having to open a big chat window. So inline reply was added to the notification and then that led to the first mole (3rd screenshot on that page). But then the bright yellow color didn't make as much sense...hence the 4th screenshot. - Keith Coleman
I like Gmail chat a lot... Would be nice to have something like that on Friendfeed - Bindu Reddy

What Will Life Be Like in the Year 2008?
March 24 at 10:24 pm - Link
"The single most important item in 2008 households is the computer. These electronic brains govern everything from meal preparation and waking up the household to assembling shopping lists and keeping track of the bank balance. Sensors in kitchen appliances, climatizing units, communicators, power supply and other household utilities warn the computer when the item is likely to fail. A repairman will show up even before any obvious breakdown occurs." - Turker Keskinpala
Is this where Microsoft got their vision of the future? - j1m
For 40 years, it's not really half bad. The main blind spot of the IT predictions seems to be underestimating integration difficulty; they assume that everything will work together under master control just because that would be convenient and desirable. It's a very master-planned fantasy. - ⓞnor
I believe we are asymptotically approaching household computers. If this fundamental law is ever broken, not only will we finally be in the future, but college HCI students will no longer have anything to do for their final projects. - Keith Coleman
