The file upload procedure is just plain broke -- is anybody at FriendFeed even interested? About 9 out 10 attempts end up with an endless "processing" cycle.

I had this issue with an mp3 I tried uploading today as well. Couldn't they just play from another source without actually having it on their servers? If the link points to a valid file on the internet, it should still be able to play fine.

Images generally work for me. An mp3 file took several attempts though.

Apparently you can only upload 3 mp3 files per day (I am guessing per 24 hour period) -- at least that is what the message I got seems to imply. It gives you this message at the end of the upload process -- and you have to wait until the quota is replenished ( though you have no way of knowing when that would be unless you remember when all the upload attempts happened).

I had some issues uploading .mp3s a while ago (finally just sent them to Posterous and had done with it) - Paul, is there a file size limit? The ones I had were encoded at like 320kpbs, so they were about 9 or 10mb. The smaller ones I did (4-5mb) seemed to have a greater success rate, but I couldn't really test because of the upload limit that counted the failed ones against me.

From what I can tell, the upload problems are caused by S3 errors (we store the files using Amazon S3). I've put in a little more logging and more retries. If you still have trouble uploading files, post the filename and I'll investigate.

What is really happening during that "processing" cycle? The "upload" part appears to work -- at least the progress bar and time taken is in line with the size of the file. For me it is the "processing" part that has failed.

The "upload" part is uploading to the FriendFeed servers. The "processing" part is the FriendFeed server uploading to Amazon S3, which is where there are sometimes problems.

Ah, yes, that could definitely be a problem with the trackpad, which I'm not overly fond of anyway. I actually use a Bluetooth Logitech mouse with my MacBook.

Miss Elle, there should be an option under System Preferences > Trackpad that allows you to do a two finger tap on the trackpad to register as a right click. Or, if it's an older macbook that has the one button, you should be able to keep a finger (or two?) on the trackpad part and click the button, iirc.

Both....or neither. I was a Linux guy for almost a decade. Moms got me an XP laptop a few years ago, which is still my primary, but I have a Mac in the studio. I have no allegiance to any OS, though. Most of what I do is inside the browser (except in the studio, but a PC runs Pro Tools just fine).

Used both systems for 20 years. Each has its function, though time has shown me more uptime and lower cost of ownership for Mac. We have an entire department, read priesthood, set up to take care of Windows (mostly security issues;) all Mac people take care of their own needs. When I buy for home use, it's all Mac.

oh, and for right click on a macbook, you can set the corner of the touchpad up as your right click.. no need for even 2 finger clicking. Tho, I do have to ask as to how you can record the audio from an application using audacity... the ability to select the stereo mixer doesn't exist and I have to resort to my windows machine in order to grab the audio.

The strain on the O2 network, at least in London, is palpable. Most people chalk it up to increased data usage driven primarily by iPhone. The hope was that with Vodafone and Orange in the game that things would settle as the usage flattened across the services. Looks like that’s less likely to happen, now that Orange is providing a sub-optimal user experience. This kind of “protectionism” feels a lot like the music industry, before it got burned.

when i switched to tmo about 5 years ago, i was told during the sales pitch that tmo were investing a million pounds a month on their data infrastructure, to build for the future they knew was coming. i believed them- and still do; in areas they've got 3g, the data rate has been pretty decent and continues to be. It also makes sense: when money was cheap, they upgraded their network. now money is expensive, it's impossible to invest. So don't expect anything to change for a while!

Although I agree with what's being said, I think this is just the old T's & C's for Orange Internet services pre the iPhone. They will change them or not enforce them. That being said, Orange is actually the worst uk network in my view and the 750mb limit just goes to show they really do not understand this marketplace. Personally I think that Vodafone will be the network of choice for the uk come Feb when they start selling it. And I for one will be porting over as soon as I can.

@James, I've tried an iPhone on tmob uk and it's not as good a service as O2 tbh. All the networks upgraded in recent times to build proper 3g services. In my experience, Vodafone is by far the best for any Internet service.

I've added a few users to a "faves" Twitter List but most of their tweets are from FriendFeed, where I already follow them. I wish I could turn this off on Twitter so I don't duplicate up.

Ok, I got my invite to Ribbit Mobile after being alerted to it from BT yesterday on their RSS Feed. What is Ribbit? Well, its Google Voice for the UK currently. Ive signed up and it quickly took control over my voicemail. People can leave voicemails for me on my normal mobile, and Ribbit will transcribe the messages and send it back to me in an SMS

Simon was kind enough to trial it out and in the above screenshot, it shows he left me a message and it automatically types out what he said in the message. Sure, the transcribing isnt instantaneous and it takes about 5-10mins, but its still decent enough. Ive got 10 invites here to try it all out for free if anyone wants a go to see what its like.

Interesting. How would this work for all the mobile and web/desktop twitter clients? I'm not sure what the percentage is, but I bet a fairly high proportion of twittering is done via these routes.

What does it do? I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Is this a recoded Home screen? Is this what you see when you swipe unlock the phone? Or do you need to run a different app?

Cristo, this is what I see when I first swipe/unlock the phone. There are four pages in all and it's possible to do the lock screen as well. All the apps which aren't visible have been grouped together on separate pages. I can then gain access to them from the media, apps and games tabs.

Home automation might be one of the killer uses for the tablet coming out. Most likely, it will run the iPhone apps, as well as new ones designed specifically for it. There are a ton of resources out there on coding for the iPhone, but the site I listed above might be a good place to start!

Hey Christo. There's not really much code required. Its basically image files and placing the icons where you want them. You need winterboard installed once you've jailbroken though.

Cristo, I only have a second, but I came across an app that might be helpful. It's called Intelliscreen. It allows you to glimpse at your critical data on your iPhone Slide to unlock screen! In this app it shows SMS/text messages, news, weather, missed calls and emails, etc. It sounds like you want to display other types of info, but the concept is still the same. I hope it's helpful! If I were worried about the servers being turned off I'd stop using this as an aggregator too. Right now I'm bringing all my Twitter Favorites in here which makes them searchable (they aren't searchable on Twitter). That's a HUGE advantage to FriendFeed for the moment. So it's saying it'll compete on the e-reading capacity, but that's dumb IMHO.

I don't know, but I wouldn't recommend it. MIrroring takes a lot of overhead and slows things down and if the server is busy (if you will be using it as a server) you may not want that slowdown.

£55 to me is a lot for a mouse.. Especially one that's likely to make my fingers hurt more with lots of useage. Im gonna go to the Apple Store on Thursday and have a go with one. Dont really want to judge it on just its looks. But it's probably the most clever mice around at the moment, what with its swipes etc, but i think it could do with being a bit more hand friendly.

It was hardly quiet. The Internet was full of Apple store down. You have to give them praise for what seems to be a brilliant marketing strategy. Why have the expense of an event or issue pr statements, just put a closed sign on the store and let Twitter, facebook and blogs do the rest. Genius.

i have it set on green, the iphone is near dead but still it lets the phone die. And i know for a fact the thing is fully charged :(

That seems to be the consensus on those ones. Mine would constantly charge the phone instead of recharging it when it was needed.

Considering all of their short comings, I have heard that their support is pretty good. They'll likely send you a replacement at least.

I never switched it over to green till it hit the 20% or 10% mark. For a faster recharge times. Charge both devices separately.

I have the older one and I've honestly never had any issues with it. Saved me quite a few times. I keep it in my bag for those emergency times when I'm not near power or USB. Just slot the phone in and it normally gives me enough power until I can plug in.

I use my original Mophie Juice Pack all day long ... i take it everywhere I go ,,, my only beef is the quality of the materials they use . My case looks years old ( only had it 6 months) ... and the strips on the sidewall peeled off numerous times .. finally I recieved some new Super Glue Strips .. should have been replaced under warranty , I felt ..
