Simon Cowell vs Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the Name" Radio edit
Play
I'm sorry but Simon Cowell is talking absolute BS here. This is a clip from Zane Lowe's show (from last week but he's been plugging this most days for a while now). Buy RATM this Christmas instead of this X-Factor trash: http://www.facebook.com/group.... BTW, RATM are currently *ahead* of X-Factor though X-Factor release the CD version tomorrow. #ratm - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Morello's playing is brilliant on the track... one of my faves. a good choice. - T. Brent, technopeasant
Why would I buy a rage song just to bash some kid? - Jeremy (on vacation)
there's a little more going on there than that, isn't there? - T. Brent, technopeasant
There must be... - Jeremy (on vacation)
That's not why they're doing it. It's time to re-claim the UK Christmas single! - Vicky
Bash a kid? It's against this pop-trash we are bombard with each year. - Kol Tregaskes
Pop = popular. If it is popular, so what. If we all buy "rage" albums, that'll be "pop" music. - Jeremy (on vacation)
Vicky, yep. It's always Pop Idol or X-Factor and it's always these really awful tunes and is it really a Christmas song? - Kol Tregaskes
Come on, Jeremy... that may have been the definition of 'pop' circa 1961... but the word has other connotations, now - T. Brent, technopeasant
Pop music is a genre and is a soft form of rock music... very soft. - Kol Tregaskes
I remember when greenday ws "underground" but they became pop. Now other bands sound like greenday. It's just what people buy. - Jeremy (on vacation)
Yep bands change their style. Shame. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
X Factor have stolen the past 4 Xmas no 1s. The whole intention is to highlight the fact that Simon Cowell does not "own" all of us! - Vicky
This is not really about styles of music, but the message in the song does seem to highlight the objective of the campaign. - Vicky
Not to sound TOO cynical, but that Cowell guy is such a Svengali/Machiavellian figure, is it conceivable that he is in some way connected to this? (beyond the obvious) - T. Brent, technopeasant
Yeah, it was boring the first time, it's even worse now. - Kol Tregaskes
"Stolen?" The radio has always been programmed by others. Turn up your ipod and quit worrying what everyone else listens to. - Jeremy (on vacation)
I do find him strangely attractive though... - Vicky
Vicky, noooo! ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Vicky - the RATM song is the most blatantly adolescent pap ever recoded. It is the soundtrack to "Rebel without a Clue." - Jeremy (on vacation)
Sorry you mis-understood me Jeremy. The UK has always had a tradition of strange and bizarre Xmas chart toppers. - Vicky
"blatantly adolescent pap"? I thought that was NSYNC... - T. Brent, technopeasant
Must be why I love it so much. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
...see. That helps me understand. - Jeremy (on vacation)
I think the point is, it's not meant to be taken too seriously :) - Vicky
Okay. Gotcha. - Jeremy (on vacation)
Hence my cynicism... RATM were a band that was managed corporately, wasn't it? How rebellious could it be? Still... some of their music, and some of their lyrics, spoke to some marginalized kids. - T. Brent, technopeasant
Yes, we would like a Christmas tune at Number 1 and not this tacky X-Factor tune. For now I'll be happy with RATM but a song like Julian Casablancas - 'Wish It Was Christmas Today' is what should be there: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Kol Tregaskes
X-Factor is all about making Simon Cowell and his folk money. Christmas Number 1 should be about Christmas. - Kol Tregaskes
The radio is ALWAYS about making money. You don't think Morello is laughing all the way to the bank? - Jeremy (on vacation)
I don't recall them getting THAT much radio play in the first place. And I'm not naive... but what do you think of this quote? - T. Brent, technopeasant
Tom Morello: "When you live in a capitalistic society, the currency of the dissemination of information goes through capitalistic channels. Would Noam Chomsky object to his works being sold at Barnes & Noble? No, because that's where people buy their books. We're not interested in preaching to just the converted. It's great to play abandoned squats run by anarchists, but it's also great to be able to reach people with a revolutionary message, people from Granada Hills to Stuttgart." - T. Brent, technopeasant
Radio might be some I hope that bands like Rage Against the Machine make music for more than just money! If RATM are all about making money then they need to write X-Factor type music. - Kol Tregaskes
I wonder who will be Number 1 today. :-) I hope everyone had bough RATM. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
You do realise that both RATM and X Factor are both on the same Record label. Regardless who wins the number 1 race, Sony BMG still get the cash. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
Yes they are both Sony but Simon Cowell doesn't own Sony. Either way it's not really about record labels, it's about having our Christmas Number 1 back and to take it away from the regular X-Factor song. Also, I personally can't stand the song, the show and really like the RATM tune. It would be even better if we had an actual Christmas song top of the chart today. Again personally I'm... more... - Kol Tregaskes
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Kol Tregaskes
Guess who got to Number 1? :-D - Kol Tregaskes
Rage of course: http://ff.im/d9Ztq - Kol Tregaskes

The file upload procedure is just plain broke -- is anybody at FriendFeed even interested? About 9 out 10 attempts end up with an endless "processing" cycle.
processing.png
For the longest time I couldn't even upload. Then all of a sudden, it started working again. - Admiral Anika
I had this issue with an mp3 I tried uploading today as well. Couldn't they just play from another source without actually having it on their servers? If the link points to a valid file on the internet, it should still be able to play fine. - Itachi
I think they decided to not respond to this group. See profile: "If you're experiencing a bug or issue, please see our <a href="http://friendfeed.com/about...">Contact page</a> to get in touch with us directly." - NaHi from f2p
Aye, same thing with spam. More time/effort is being dedicated elsewhere..understandable. - Itachi
We're investigating. Are you experiencing this with all file types? - Paul Buchheit
That's really interesting because I've not experienced this trouble at all. I only upload image files though. - pea
Seems to be working for some people: http://friendfeed.com/ff-muzi... - Jason Huebel
I don't know, might just be on and off thing. Worked yesterday fine though: http://friendfeed.com/random-... - Itachi
I haven't had any problem with anything other than mp3 files but I haven't tried any others either. - Brian Sullivan
The most infuriating part of this is that the failed upload counts against your upload quota. - Brian Sullivan
I had problems with it this evening, however, I was on mobile broadband. Worked perfectly when I got home and used wifi. - Keith Bennett
Happened to me a couple weeks ago with an *MB mp3 file. - beersage
Whats the upload quota? - beersage
@Brian, upload quota? - Jason Huebel
Images generally work for me. An mp3 file took several attempts though. - Todd Hoff
Apparently you can only upload 3 mp3 files per day (I am guessing per 24 hour period) -- at least that is what the message I got seems to imply. It gives you this message at the end of the upload process -- and you have to wait until the quota is replenished ( though you have no way of knowing when that would be unless you remember when all the upload attempts happened). - Brian Sullivan
I had some issues uploading .mp3s a while ago (finally just sent them to Posterous and had done with it) - Paul, is there a file size limit? The ones I had were encoded at like 320kpbs, so they were about 9 or 10mb. The smaller ones I did (4-5mb) seemed to have a greater success rate, but I couldn't really test because of the upload limit that counted the failed ones against me. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
From what I can tell, the upload problems are caused by S3 errors (we store the files using Amazon S3). I've put in a little more logging and more retries. If you still have trouble uploading files, post the filename and I'll investigate. - Paul Buchheit
What is really happening during that "processing" cycle? The "upload" part appears to work -- at least the progress bar and time taken is in line with the size of the file. For me it is the "processing" part that has failed. - Brian Sullivan
Magic ;) - Itachi
The "upload" part is uploading to the FriendFeed servers. The "processing" part is the FriendFeed server uploading to Amazon S3, which is where there are sometimes problems. - Paul Buchheit
Ah, thanks for clearing that up, Paul. - Micah Wittman
This is still occurring. Not uploading to Amazon apparently. - Eric Logan
same prblem still - egza

Heh, you can right click perfectly fine in OS X, and it looks like you can even build xnu if you want http://shantonu.blogspot.com/2009... but it doesn't like it's for the faint of heart. - Victor Ganata
@Victor -- How do you right click (aside from pressing "Control")? I hate having to "two hand" when using the boyfriend's MacBook. - Miss Elle
Ah, yes, that could definitely be a problem with the trackpad, which I'm not overly fond of anyway. I actually use a Bluetooth Logitech mouse with my MacBook. - Victor Ganata
Miss Elle, there should be an option under System Preferences > Trackpad that allows you to do a two finger tap on the trackpad to register as a right click. Or, if it's an older macbook that has the one button, you should be able to keep a finger (or two?) on the trackpad part and click the button, iirc. - Arlan Koizumi

Used both systems for 20 years. Each has its function, though time has shown me more uptime and lower cost of ownership for Mac. We have an entire department, read priesthood, set up to take care of Windows (mostly security issues;) all Mac people take care of their own needs. Thierry Henry must be banned from playing in the 2010 World Cup - Telegraph
"If hitherto good guys like Henry are sacrificing their scruples on the high altar of "the end justifies the means'', then football really has lost its moral compass. The governing body of the global game, Fifa, must react strongly to an outrage more harmful than Diego Maradona's Hand of God." - tom murphy from Bookmarklet
Oh, please, whatever. The only reason why this is news is because it's a big name player in a high stakes game. Anyone who has watched enough football will see plenty of uncalled handballs. Besides, Henry isn't so innocent. I recall some Arsenal match back in 2002 or so where the two sides were lining up for a free kick which he took before the opposing side was ready. They scored a... more... - Akiva Moskovitz

Orange will ban Non-Orange Internet based streaming services on the iPhone. (Spotify, UStream…surely not YouTube?) - http://thenextweb.com/europe...
Orange will ban Non-Orange Internet based streaming services on the iPhone. (Spotify, UStream…surely not YouTube?)
it's not like anyone's gonna bother using it, eh zee? - James Cox from IM
it's ridiculous. How do they expect to compete? - Zee.
Precisely Zee. O2 must be ever so pleased. - Roberto Bonini
well they won't, obviously. it's just newbies getting into the net neutrality debate. they're going to get lynched - James Cox from IM
anyhow, it's all good- this has to mean that getting unlocked phones will be easier… so then running it on t-mobile uk will be much simpler, especially given that it is such a better network - James Cox from IM
But Zee, consider. Do newbies even know that non-orange streaming services exist (apart from youtube)?? - Roberto Bonini
+1 James. @Roberto honestly, I'd say YouTube and Spotify are enough to be pissed off about - Zee.
Agreed Zee. I dislike restrictions in all its forms. I'd steer well clear of Orange on principle alone. - Roberto Bonini
The strain on the O2 network, at least in London, is palpable. Most people chalk it up to increased data usage driven primarily by iPhone. The hope was that with Vodafone and Orange in the game that things would settle as the usage flattened across the services. Looks like that’s less likely to happen, now that Orange is providing a sub-optimal user experience. This kind of “protectionism” feels a lot like the music industry, before it got burned. - George Nimeh
when i switched to tmo about 5 years ago, i was told during the sales pitch that tmo were investing a million pounds a month on their data infrastructure, to build for the future they knew was coming. i believed them- and still do; in areas they've got 3g, the data rate has been pretty decent and continues to be. It also makes sense: when money was cheap, they upgraded their network. now money is expensive, it's impossible to invest. So don't expect anything to change for a while! - James Cox from IM
"Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video)." Why does it remind me of this? http://www.youtube.com/watch... - John Craft
Although I agree with what's being said, I think this is just the old T's & C's for Orange Internet services pre the iPhone. They will change them or not enforce them. That being said, Orange is actually the worst uk network in my view and the 750mb limit just goes to show they really do not understand this marketplace. Personally I think that Vodafone will be the network of choice for the uk come Feb when they start selling it. And I for one will be porting over as soon as I can. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
@James, I've tried an iPhone on tmob uk and it's not as good a service as O2 tbh. All the networks upgraded in recent times to build proper 3g services. In my experience, Vodafone is by far the best for any Internet service. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
I wonder if twisting o2's arm may get me a slight reduction. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
it's always worth ringing o2 and asking what could be done with your plan to get a small reduction - they do it. I keep meaning to leave them but then i check the other tarifs and deals at other providers and realise I am on a pretty good deal... sim only :) - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)

On Twitter I wish you could select the services to follow or not for each user, i.e. where the tweets are coming from.
I've added a few users to a "faves" Twitter List but most of their tweets are from FriendFeed, where I already follow them. I wish I could turn this off on Twitter so I don't duplicate up. - Kol Tregaskes
I try to avoid following someone on Twitter if they are on FF and posts their tweets here. I share the same wish for Google Reader though, the ability to follow someone but selectively based on sources they share. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Being a Friendfeed-Twitter user myself, I understand your concerns, but I think that the majority of my Twitter followers benefit from being redirected to Friendfeed, because I can use more than 140 chars here to properly comment the link I share there. Plus, Friendfeed avoids repeating the Twitter links when they come from Ffeed, so users here don't get the same link twice. I think... more... - Jordi Soler
The superiority of this program made me choose it over twitter i nthe first place. - Jeremy (on vacation)
Jodi, sure but you can't get away from the duplication. - Kol Tregaskes
For instance, if you could hide "Twitterfeed" or "API", you would be in great shape. - Louis Gray
Louis, yep, though "API" might help tweets from apps like Seesmic Desktop and Tweetdeckm etc? - Kol Tregaskes
How so, Kol? I don't see any duplicated items in my feed, and I'm redirecting them to Twitter. Maybe I'm missing something... - Jordi Soler
No, no, duplication from a user's Twitter feed and their FriendFeed feed. I only need to see it once (preferably on FF) and don't need to see it again on Twitter. So I would like to hit, for instance, any tweets from the FF API in Seemsic Desktop for my Twitter List users. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, isn't it easier to stop following somebody on Twitter who imports their Twitter feed into FriendFeed? That way you only ever see the tweet once. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
@Keith that's my point! - Jordi Soler
I prefer to follow tweets in Seesmic Desktop and everything else in FF. Users who tweet their FF posts also tweet as normal and that's what I would like in Seesmic Desktop only. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol I just don't "get" seesmic and return to FF over and over again - Thomas Power
For me it makes things a lot easier, like RTs, reporting spam, DMings (can't do on FF anyway) and faving tweets. I can also see my Twitter Lists and mentions, which I cannot do properly on FF. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol you are clearly a far more advanced user than I, any chance you can do a video on how use Seesmic so I can learn from you? Loic assumes we have so much knowledge and you only discover it by clicking which I guess I haven't yet. Thx for the tips KT. TPx - Thomas Power
I wish I had the spare time. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes

Giraffes Up In The AIr
Ok, I got my invite to Ribbit Mobile after being alerted to it from BT yesterday on their RSS Feed. What is Ribbit? Well, its Google Voice for the UK currently. Ive signed up and it quickly took control over my voicemail. People can leave voicemails for me on my normal mobile, and Ribbit will transcribe the messages and send it back to me in an SMS
ribbit.png
ribbit2.png
Simon was kind enough to trial it out and in the above screenshot, it shows he left me a message and it automatically types out what he said in the message. Sure, the transcribing isnt instantaneous and it takes about 5-10mins, but its still decent enough. Ive got 10 invites here to try it all out for free if anyone wants a go to see what its like. - Giraffes Up In The AIr
Thats pure coincidence that Ribbit.com has liked this. I didnt even know they were on FF! - Giraffes Up In The AIr

What does it do? I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Is this a recoded Home screen? Is this what you see when you swipe unlock the phone? Or do you need to run a different app? - Cristo
Cristo, this is what I see when I first swipe/unlock the phone. There are four pages in all and it's possible to do the lock screen as well. All the apps which aren't visible have been grouped together on separate pages. I can then gain access to them from the media, apps and games tabs. - Michael Fidler
Does this work on unlocked phones? That's pretty cool you can override the default Home screen. Did you write this code? Do you know where the hooks are? - Cristo
It doesn't need to be unlocked, but you do have to jailbreak it first. Here's where I started after I found the theme; http://bit.ly/2FNi6p - Michael Fidler
Yeah, sorry. I meant jailbreak. Thanks for the link. - Cristo
I understand; it was new territory for me too. I wasn’t going to do it until I read Mike Fructer’s post; Jailbreaking My iPhone: It’s All About The Customization… http://bit.ly/2PSqER. It was easier than I though it would be! - Michael Fidler
I'm not worried about jailbreaking it. I want to know how to write the code because I have some home automation stuff I want to do with iPod Touch. - Cristo
Home automation might be one of the killer uses for the tablet coming out. Most likely, it will run the iPhone apps, as well as new ones designed specifically for it. There are a ton of resources out there on coding for the iPhone, but the site I listed above might be a good place to start! - Michael Fidler
Michael, thanks. I know how to code for the iPhone, I just want the hooks to override the Home screen app. - Cristo
You mean the Winterboard ? The theme app - Wao || 大号真皮人偶 from iPhone
Hey Christo. There's not really much code required. Its basically image files and placing the icons where you want them. You need winterboard installed once you've jailbroken though. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
nice! - .LAG liked that
Keith, so it's not replacing the app then? I want it to turn on and display home automation information and app functionality right away. I also want to disable the swipe lock. - Cristo
Cristo, I only have a second, but I came across an app that might be helpful. It's called Intelliscreen. It allows you to glimpse at your critical data on your iPhone Slide to unlock screen! In this app it shows SMS/text messages, news, weather, missed calls and emails, etc. It sounds like you want to display other types of info, but the concept is still the same. I hope it's helpful! Here's the developers web page Intelliborn - http://bit.ly/2c2Itp - Michael Fidler
This is from the developers site,' Customizing your IntelliScreen is easy! Choose which content you want to view and where". I think I'm going to download it!. - Michael Fidler
I'll have a search for it in Cydia ,, looks tasty - johnpiercy
John, are there any review sites that cover these apps? - Michael Fidler
Cristo, Intelliscreen is really nice! - Michael Fidler
Cristo, Inteliscreen is ok, but I think you need something like lockscreeninfo, same functionality but more extensible. Check out this thread for more info http://macthemes2.net/forum... - Keith Bennett
I think i want to DO what these apps are doing, but not use them. If I had source code it would not be a problem. - Cristo
I'm sure you can get what you want if you talk to the guys who did lockscreeninfo. I think they've made it so you can extend it any to do what you need. Check out this thread for more info on how to add plugins http://macthemes2.net/forum... - Keith Bennett
That is awesome! You sir are talented. - practicehacker
I'll pass your compliment on to the designer, 6mik-design. I'm sure he will appreciate it! - Michael Fidler
Keith, I agree with you about Lock Screen; it's a better choice. I came across these examples yesterday and they look great; http://bit.ly/Xvkcz - Michael Fidler
Winterboard, Categories and Lockscreen, 3 big reasons to jailbreak your iphone. PS, Michael, sorry for the hijack of your thread. Your theme is very cool, not my thing (I use Glaskart), but it does look good. - Keith Bennett

Friendfeed confirms no more features coming to Friendfeed | The Tech News Blog - http://www.thetechnewsblog.com/2009...
Friendfeed’s Paul Buchheit has just confirmed to me that the next ‘big’ new feature coming to Friendfeed, will be the last. This comes a day after Buchheit issued a confusing statement about the future of the platform he co-founded. Here’s what Buchheit just told me, in full: - Jim Connolly from Bookmarklet
I believe a steady revenue stream could change everything Jim: http://bit.ly/3Qer81 - Mark Essel
Mark: Not sure how it would change things for Paul and the guys - they just sold out to Facebook and have more money than they will ever need. (and they deserve every fricking penny BTW!!!) - Jim Connolly
Well they sold for 50million, of that the various investors probably got 60-70%, with founders and early employees splitting the remaining 15-20million. Probably no more than a few million each (yeah nothing to spit at), but if they cashed out taxes would cut that in half, I think they still have to keep working. I think they sold too cheap, with 1 million users some focused and tasteful ads would have gotten far more revenue. - Mark Essel
whew, got ya refollowed (went through and cleared out my following list on twitter now that I may have to use it again ;). staring from scratch) - Mark Essel
A sign of how quiet things are now on Friendfeed? I've had 5 (FIVE) click-throughs from friendfeed to my blog after posting this here. 3 months ago it would have been massively more. Really sad watching it die slowly like this. - Jim Connolly
Is that really a sign that it is dying or a sign that people are tired of reading the "death of friendfeed" posts? - Alan Simpson
+1 Alan - Eric Logan
Alan: Not sure - but when a post has twice as many 'likes' as clicks it means something. That same post's been read over 400 times so far - so there's some interest out there. - Jim Connolly
Mark: not true. Advertising for a million users wouldn't bring in that much on a forum-based site. Average CPM is about $3 per 1,000 page views. That wouldn't make anyone rich. The way Paul will become really rich is to help make Facebook a public company (they are well on their way). That means pouring all his skills into making Facebook a better service for its 300 million users (and growing). - Robert Scoble
Alan: And there's no longer a debate - the co-founder confirmed no new development. - Jim Connolly
Thats sad... - Roshan Ramachandran
It's also worth pointing out how much respect I now have for Paul, for being good enough to let us know the future plans - well, lack of future plans. That took balls and he deserves some credit. - Jim Connolly
Feedback please: Do I delete my account now the platform's no longer being developed? - Jim Connolly
Why would you delete it ? A lot of things have always just been fed through here without active participation. - Eric Logan
So Jim, this is why you were pestering him so much in the thread? So that you could get a catchy headline for your blog? He said - "Jim, there may be a few new things, but as I said, the team is mainly working on fb platform and openness, so it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff (except maybe one that I've been thinking about for a while...). I don't see that as a... more... - Kenton
When platforms cease being invested in, as you know, they slowly grind to a halt. Is it better to invest the time I spend here on a platform that's growing - rather than shrinking? - Jim Connolly
Kenton: I don't need a catchy headline for a blog, thats only updated a couple of times a week and run as a pastime. The feedback you gave about deleting accounts screwing up comments makes sense. When the co-founder says that "it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff" I believe him. - Jim Connolly
I guess it depends on why you're investing your time. If it is in the community, then I don't see why you can't still contribute. If you're using it for increasing your personal brand, business, blog traffic, etc then you are probably right to invest your time on sites that see more traffic and growth. - Kenton
Kenton is right, you're title is wrong, fact. He did not say NO new features. - Keith Bennett
If engagement continues to go down everyone will eventually migrate. I am sure there are a few groups talking to each other and the bots on Friendster. I do not see any reason why you would not continue to pipe in your content. I haven't found or been introduced to anything better at present. I do see some potential for Wave with proper development despite its complexity. - Eric Logan
There's really nothing cool about all this cryptic communication Paul is giving us. All it's doing is riling us up and causing us to be unnecessarily speculative. We made this site be worth 50m, so we therefore don't deserve to be strung along like this. - Brad Williamson
Keith: Did you interpret "it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff" as meaning there WILL be more big new features? - Jim Connolly
"Thank you" - Seems the route is to keep the account alive, rather then mess up content for other users by deleting it. Appreciate the heads-up. - Jim Connolly
Six clicks now, fwiw. - MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Gotta go. Just subscribed to everyone who's commented here - so you can DM me. Really appreciate the feedback. - Jim Connolly
Jim: No I didn't, but I also didn't post an article saying there will be NONE! Fact is, we don't know what they are up to, what they plan to do and that's what causes the speculation. You're adding fuel to the fire and I think you should change the title, that's all. Personally, I'm in the wait and see what happens camp. I'm happy with the service as is and I'm sure what emerges from the FB integration will be interesting, but until I know what that is, I'm happy to continue with what I have. - Keith Bennett
y'all are beating a dead horse here. of course it's gonna die. Of course people are jumping off the ship. look at any number of other tech acquisitions and what became of them. It's not really that complicated. - Bill Kinney
ICQ still exists...Winamp still exists...AOL still exists (but why?) - Alex Scoble
Robert: $3 per 1000 views is pretty bad. I think I can do better through use of learning about what folks like in their streams. Heck I can't believe search activated ads are that weak. Well in a few more years that may be profitable (bandwidth/servers/etc are all getting cheaper, while our attention is staying even in value). - Mark Essel
Another FriendFeed self prophecy post. Cast doubt about its future so users begin leaving, then it will HAVE to close because of lack of users! You should be doing the opposite and encouraging folks to join...its users that keep a service afloat.. - technogran

To Whom It May Concern, If I was writing a movie based around the current scene at FriendFeed, I would cast you as the big, evil corporation and all of us FriendFeeders as the people at the community centre standing in the way of ‘progress’. But I don’t write movies and, frankly, Channel 7 News isn’t [...] - Johnny Worthington
"FriendFeed is more than a few noisy tech bloggers. While I agree that there is thick filling of tech and social media content here, it sits on a delicious base of personalities and personal connections. Over the 18 months I have been here, I have seen births, deaths and marriages. I have watched children grow, others fight cancer, couples fall in love and felt very real support through my own family issues. I have emotional currency in here, and I am sorely in debt." - Roberto Bonini

Robert Scoble's recent words about the future of FriendFeed were meant as a call to arms by him (although that has just become clear). This is my first salvo... - Johnny Worthington
Thank you for serving up this good food for thought and call for action! Here is a meme that might be helpful for the effort - while "FriendFeed: the Company" may be history ... "FriendFeed the Concept" may be the future. It may make as good a verb as it does a noun - like "to google" has become synonymous with search, "to friendfeed" can become the core SN function. Maybe some motivation for FF owners to guide their legacy to this logical conclusion. - Dan Freeman

Johnny - I am new to FF (and most all social media) and arrived only due to the influence of a friend that I wanted to follow (a few months ago I didn't even know what "follow" meant!) ....what I found was an interesting, informative, less commercial site that I now go to numerous times a day. Because I'm not all scripty and junk the comment I made over on Johnny's blog won't come over here, so I've copied it instead: "Well said, Johnny. If I were worried about the servers being turned off I'd stop using this as an aggregator too. Right now I'm bringing all my Twitter Favorites in here which makes them searchable (they aren't searchable on Twitter). That's a HUGE advantage to FriendFeed for the moment. 13 Things you Need to Know about the Barnes & Noble Nook
I like the look of this, I admit I've not been a fan of the kindle coz it looks crap, but this is nice. - Keith Bennett
It does not come with the power of android still http://ff.im/afd8I - Mahmood Padura
What do you mean by that Mahmood? - Jorge Escobar
Perhaps he means it's not Android-powered. - Christopher A Carr
Uhm, but it is - Jorge Escobar
Yeah, I'm not sure... - Christopher A Carr
Well they somehow do not put any browser on it. Is there any plan in the future to have it? - Mahmood Padura
Plus Android should make it cheaper than this probably, - Mahmood Padura
The thing is that these readers are not meant to be browsers, so I guess they stripe that out. The cost of the unit is mostly associated with the hardware (specially the electronic ink paper) - Jorge Escobar
Read this one: "Barnes & Noble officially launches the nook, its Android powered eReader" http://www.mobileburn.com/news... - Jorge Escobar
True, however I think the real war is with Apple I assume so they must go for a browser sooner or later. - Mahmood Padura
Hm, I don't think so. Barnes & Noble's direct competitor is Amazon, so I'm pretty sure this is against the Kindle and not Apple - Jorge Escobar
Well at first glance is Kindle but if you look carefully the first thing they emphasize is "the most advanced reader" which I assume Android is part of it. - Mahmood Padura
This means they have a long range goal in their mind which is apple tablets. - Mahmood Padura
I respectfully disagree. But time will tell ;) - Jorge Escobar from IM
Apple's tablet (should the thing ever actually exist) won't primarily be an e-reader. E-readers and fully back-lit tablets aren't the same things. - Christopher A Carr
That's correct. The display of these units is specialized to render text like a book, it's not done for graphics or HTML. It's Black & White - Jorge Escobar from IM
hold on let me back up myself with some article.http://www.computerworld.com/s... - Mahmood Padura
That's like saying a new Mack truck will compete with the new Porsche. They're two different animals. Note that the article says "put somewhat of a damper on the e-reading capabilities of planned tablets/devices from Apple and Microsoft." So it's saying it'll compete on the e-reading capacity, but that's dumb IMHO. - Jorge Escobar from IM
I agree about the differences but tell me what do you expect these e-readers to become in 2 years from now? - Mahmood Padura
2 years is a loooooooong time ;) - Jorge Escobar

I really like it. Might feel weird scrolling at first but I'm hoping it will feel more solid than the mighty mouse. Agree with Sparky though, bit pricey! - Charlotte M
If it's 70$ is that about £35, thats what i paid for my mighty mouse which gave up after a couple months anyway.. I cant see a price for it anywhere at the moment, UK store still down. - Simon Wicks

I've spent $100 on a mouse before so $70 is nothing to me. I'm pretty interested in how the multi touch will work and I really like it being bluetooth. If the multi touch works great then I will get one. - Mathew™ one of a kind
Simon, £55 in the uk store I believe. Not as tempted as I was after seeing the price. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
My dear other half (who suffers from RSI) took one look at the new mouse and ran away screaming. She thinks it's exactly the kind of mouse to cause/make worse RSI, for many of the same reasons that the infamous "hockey puck" did. - Ian Betteridge
Damn, and I just bought a Mighty Mouse a week or two ago. - Ranger Craig
Love it. So want it. I love multi-touch :) - Zachary TG
£55 to me is a lot for a mouse.. Especially one that's likely to make my fingers hurt more with lots of useage. Im gonna go to the Apple Store on Thursday and have a go with one. Dont really want to judge it on just its looks. But it's probably the most clever mice around at the moment, what with its swipes etc, but i think it could do with being a bit more hand friendly. - Simon Wicks

It was hardly quiet. The Internet was full of Apple store down. You have to give them praise for what seems to be a brilliant marketing strategy. I haven't looked at these for almost two years. Boot Camp obviously works best, but it's a pain. - LogEx
I'd go with Boot Camp? :) Oh. Wait. ;) - Holger Eilhard
Still not enough support with virtualization? - LogEx
Wouldn't boot camp be best so you were running natively and not on a virtual machine? I guess it all comes down to what you are wanting to play. No way something like Fallout3 would work on virtual machine, I wouldn't think. - Ryan
Parallels 4 for me - Osman Üngür
From Twitter: "ParallelsMac @logicalextremes You should check out Parallels. Read this article: http://bit.ly/uQypd" & "ParallelsMac @logicalextremes We think that you should check out Parallels. You can now watch crisp and clear British television LIVE on your iPhone.
This is really cool and works well. I just wonder how long it will last, surely it's not legal? Also, anybody know if it works on 3G? - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed

Anyone got one of the iPhone Mophie Packs? I have a question...
I do. - Joshua Schnell
I do. It sometimes works. - Mistletoe Glen
Same here Glen. It saved me on my Euro trip, but I can't really "rely" on it 100% of the time. - Joshua Schnell
for me it just doesn't work properly - i don't get it. At £60 i expect it to do what it says - Zee.
What version of it do you have Zee? - Joshua Schnell
the latest juice pack air - Zee.
i have it set on green, the iphone is near dead but still it lets the phone die. And i know for a fact the thing is fully charged :( - Zee.
I had the original juice pack. - Joshua Schnell
That seems to be the consensus on those ones. Mine would constantly charge the phone instead of recharging it when it was needed. - Joshua Schnell
I got to the point where I didn't attach it to my phone until I absolutely needed it. - Joshua Schnell
really? well that fucking sucks. :( - Zee.
You try emailing their support? You might be able to send it back and get a replacement. - Joshua Schnell
I have the original too. And yeah it's not reliable but it helps out in some situations. - Edgar Rodríguez from iPhone
yeah, thanks Joshua might have to do that - Zee.
Considering all of their short comings, I have heard that their support is pretty good. They'll likely send you a replacement at least. - Joshua Schnell
http://twitter.com/mophie Ben Kaufman ;) - alex
FWIW at this point, I have the Air and while I don't have your problem, it doesn't fully charge the 3GS and gets around 90 percent and then iphone says it doesn't work with this device. - Martha from BuddyFeed
I never switched it over to green till it hit the 20% or 10% mark. For a faster recharge times. Charge both devices separately. - Michael Zamora
I have the older one and I've honestly never had any issues with it. Saved me quite a few times. I keep it in my bag for those emergency times when I'm not near power or USB. Just slot the phone in and it normally gives me enough power until I can plug in. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
I use my original Mophie Juice Pack all day long ... i take it everywhere I go ,,, my only beef is the quality of the materials they use . My case looks years old ( only had it 6 months) ... and the strips on the sidewall peeled off numerous times .. finally I recieved some new Super Glue Strips .. should have been replaced under warranty , I felt .. - johnpiercy
