“Hi! I'd like to suggest a change to the formatting of comments on posts: The commenter's name should go first, followed by what they say. As is, it's difficult to read, having to skip to the end of the line, and then back to the front to read the comment.”

“I'd like to suggest a change to the formatting of the friends page, where you display the friends' names and the unsubscribe option. The "unsubscribe" text is too prominent, being in the same heavy blue as the persons name. It's almost like a subtitle to their name rather than a seldom used action.”

35 - The Size of Africa « Strange Maps
yesterday at 2:37 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"It shows how Africa (30,3 million km²) is larger than the combination of China (9,6 million km²), the US (9,4 million km²), Western Europe (4,9 million km²), India (3,2 million km²) and Argentina (2,8 million km²), three Scandinavian countries and the British Isles" - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
The comments there are a treasure too! :) - Alex
It's as big as all the countries of Africa combined! - Gabe
hotbed of innovation and manufacture within 30 years - Gregory Lent
Alex: spot on. lol reading these comments. A dash of pedantry, a little bit of bigotry, some serious lack of geographical knowledge: so much fun! :) - Mathieu Ayel
beg to differ somewhat with Gregory. It might become hotbed of innovation but not any time soon. Conflicts, political instability, lack of decent governance and underlying infrastructures and institutions will not allow it to resonate in a way to become a hotbed of innovation. In small pockets though, it happens even now, especially in countries like Kenya and Ghana in everything from innovative approaches to private education to inventing incredible devices for water cleaning. - Hayk
Moreover, the size and comparison of African continent with other continents and countries is little more than a nice figure illustrative of geography. - Hayk
30 years, hyak, things will move fast, but i know what you are saying, seems nearly hopeless, impossible .. but the world "vibration" will make it happen faster than is logical (my opinion) - Gregory Lent
Gregory, i did not mean logic. Living on this continent since 1.5 years and seeing their mentality and their potential, I believe that nothing short of dramatic consciousness change, to borrow your term, will turn people on this continent into economic machines of production. I generalize, apparently. - Hayk
me too :-) ... i really have nothing to base this on .. except two things .. the creativity they have with basically nothing, even bricks are rare sometimes .. the way they are doing the cellphone thing is a hopeful sign .. and the other is from african art, every culture made masks with some sort of design feature where the third eye is .. there is an innate plugged-in-ness there, so that when it gets a bit stable, it will flow .. and the gates foundation should only do education, malaria will then take - Gregory Lent
care of itself - Gregory Lent
Also, Africa had this "misfortune" of being on top of all kinds of natural resources which became valued at one point or another. As it said in Blood Diamonds, "every time a precious resource is found on this continent, innocent people die, country is plundered." Pouring money only to sustain lives without any solid self-sustainable policies in education or infrastructure is sort of a band-aid. Tackling malaria is what appeals the most to inner sensitivities of Gates :) - Hayk
Africa is the cradle of our species.. says a lot about how out of touch we have become when we treat our birthplace with such distain. No wonder we're raping and pillaging everything we can. Makes you wonder if the attempts at keeping the African nations as undeveloped as possible is to turn the place into the next middle east when the rest of our resources have been spent. - alphaxion
+1 Gabe - Rebecca Sun
Thinking economy is taking out limited resources is wrong... Economy is added value man made... Today wealth comes from service... picking was thousands years ago, agriculture hundreds and industry last 2 centuries... - jfayel
Natural resources have historically made countries very wealthy. - Gabe

“What's the recommended way to keep a directory of files in sync with S3?”
9 hours ago - Link
I.e., I want to mirror a directory on my servers over to S3, so I can serve them using CloudFront. Any pointers? - DeWitt Clinton
I looked into a number of methods and never found something that I liked. I asked the Dropbox guys to let me use my own S3 bucket instead of requiring that I use theirs but got shot down. - Benjamin Golub
How weird. I expected this to be one of the first things people would do. - DeWitt Clinton
S3Fox says they do it, but I don't use it for synchronization, so I can't vouch for its quality. I wrote my own, it's not really a very hard project. http://www.rjonna.com/ext/s3fo... - Dave Winer
Thanks, Dave. I saw S3Fox, but it didn't quite support wanted as far as I could tell. I just want to take an existing domain (static.unto.net) and port it over to S3 and CloudFront. A simple rsync-like script to mirror that directory over to S3 should be all I need. I may have to follow your lead and write my own. (So much for 10 minutes.) - DeWitt Clinton
I see, instead of having the files on a local hard drive, they're only accessible via HTTP. If so, S3Fox doesn't do it. - Dave Winer
@Dave - no, they are available locally, but it's a headless machine -- no UI, command-line only. - DeWitt Clinton
@Aviv - s3sync looks like a winner! Thanks much! - DeWitt Clinton
Dewitt, in that case s3fox would work. Doesn't matter if its headless machine as long as you can access it over your LAN. - Dave Winer
Hmm. I suppose I could use sshfs to mount the remote directory locally, but that seems a bit convoluted. What would be awesome would be a fuse filesystem interface to S3 itself -- then I could use mount the S3 store on my server and use standard rsync and rsnapshot tools against that. - DeWitt Clinton
Now that's a good idea DeWitt! Do it at the filesystem level and a whole new world of opportunities open up. - Benjamin Golub
There are several s3 fuse projects out there that work pretty well. See http://developer.amazonwebserv... for ideas - Aviv
@Aviv - so I see now! Have you used any of them? Any thoughts on which works best? [Ahh, I see you added a link. Perfect!] - DeWitt Clinton
I haven't tried any, but the most popular one seems to be http://code.google.com/p/s3fs/ - Aviv
Meh, just realized that box is running an old version of Fedora. Looking forward to the dependency dance. - DeWitt Clinton
My worry with mounting S3 has been the file permissions stuff. Just haven't found a good explanation of how Unix file permissions map to S3 permissions. - David Recordon

I'm sure this not so subtle critique of friendfeed may have something to do with Mashable being totally Ping.fm whores such that as just being a Blog they're actually promoted as a service; Ohhhh and that the 2nd Annual Web Awards are coming up & I'm sure they're efforts to solicit votes has nothing to do with the critique either...hmmmmmmmmm Ping this! - sofarsoshawn

“I think the "more related entries" function should be improved, as it just connects entries linking to the same page. Everytime Dopplr pushes something into FF I see all my past info as related, even if they refer to different trips.”
yesterday at 6:30 am - Link
This is unfortunately because Dopplr doesn't have different URLs for each trip, and so, we read it all as the same link. We will work on improving this for Dopplr entries in FriendFeed. - Ana
That's the point. Instead of relating entries with the same link, would it be possible to do it via text? In this way also pinged services will appear as related having the same text. - flapic
I actually like the feature of grouping related entries based on link. It helps me check out different conversations about a similar item, even if people use different text to describe that item. - LauraBrarian
