Turbaconducken (Turducken Wrapped in Bacon)

"Turbaconducken. That’s right — a chicken stuffed in duck stuffed in a turkey, all wrapped in bacon. Otherwise known as a bacon-wrapped turducken." D: - Jess Lee via Bookmarklet
mmmm....bacon - Paul
The amazing part is that the chicken *and* the duck *and* the turkey are wrapped in separate layers of bacon. Also amazing is that an entire site is dedicated to "Daily Updates on the World of Sweet, Sweet Bacon" - Bill Strathearn
I have to say that is some seriously unattractive food, regardless of how good it might taste. I'd love to see a professional chef try to dress that thing up... - Kamilah Gill

@Alex: Wow. I didn't think the turbaconducken could be topped, but 9 birds stuffed into a turkey definitely wins. - Jess Lee
I also read it as bad German transliteration, something “turboconductive”, or maybe Italian, “turba con ducken”. - John Lam

Big 3 Bailout - Average Wages for Detroit vs Japanese Transplants
16 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"For Detroit, [bankruptcy] means release from ruinous wage deals with their astronomical benefits (the hourly cost of a Big Three worker: $73; of an American worker for Toyota: $48), massive pension obligations, and unworkable work rules such as “job banks,” a euphemism for paying vast numbers of employees not to work." - Jess Lee via Bookmarklet
Like for the overall idea, not for the political name calling etc. - Erica Baker
I don't know precisely how the proposed bailout is structured yet, but it definitely gives me a scary, icky feeling at first glance. And while I do think that labor costs are *part* of US automakers' problems, it's obvious that they're far from the whole story. - Joel Webber
It's also worth noting that the article's author is Charles Krauthammer, who's hardly a useful source of unbiased information. Some of the commenters go so far as to suggest that US automakers would be fine if it weren't for CAFE standards, which is pretty absurd given that they also apply to companies that are doing just fine. - Joel Webber

I thought this was particularly relevant given the whole Motrin Moms thing. "Oh, the good old days. When nursing moms were supposed to drink beer, television was good for kids, smoking wasn't bad, and cocaine was legal." - Jess Lee via Bookmarklet

"The idea was to lampoon the terrible search engine capabilities of the Cuil search engine, while providing a functionally stimulating idea about the interrelationship between tangential things." - Jess Lee via Bookmarklet
"One Cuil = One level of abstraction away from the reality of a situation. Example: You ask me for a Hamburger. 1 Cuil: if you asked me for a hamburger, and I gave you a raccoon. 2 Cuils: If you asked me for a hamburger, but it turns out I don't really exist. Where I was originally standing, a picture of a hamburger rests on the ground. 3 Cuils: You awake as a hamburger. You start screaming only to have special sauce fly from your lips. "Michelle Rhee, the hard-charging chancellor of the Washington public schools, thinks teacher tenure may be great for adults, those who go into teaching to get summer vacations and great health insurance, for instance. But it hurts children, she says, by making incompetent instructors harder to fire. So Ms. Rhee has proposed spectacular raises of as much as $40,000, financed by private foundations, for teachers willing to give up tenure." - Jess Lee via Bookmarklet
What about incompetent administrators? School systems often seem to be rife with weird politics, I don't like the idea of letting principals be the sole arbiters of "teacher quality". - ⓞnor
I wonder if you could design an auction-type arrangement where teachers were paid based on which teachers parents requested for their children. - Jim Norris
I don't think super high pay is really what would motivate teachers (the ones I know, anyway). Good working conditions, a fair wage, stable benefits, adequate support, and the ability to make a difference seem like they would be bigger motivating factors. Anyway, I don't know what they're trying to accomplish with the whole "get paid a lot to give up tenure" -- surely the teachers who wouldn't get the principal's nod wouldn't sign up for it. - ⓞnor
Yeah, there does seem to be rather a self-selection bias. And, as the son of two teachers, I can confirm what @nor said. More pay would have been appreciated, but what really frustrated my parents was the red tape, the incompetent bureaucrats, oh, and spoiled kids of nasty parents ("You gave my little one a B+!?! He is HARVARD material... how dare you!!!") - Adam Lasnik
Higher pay might motivate more people to become teachers though, even if it isn't a significant motivator for current teachers. I could imagine that a lot of people have some threshold pay level in mind when they're choosing jobs or careers, so higher pay might not be a motivator as much as a gateway. - Jim Norris
I agree with Jim. I love teaching, but compare a software engineer's salary with a teacher's salary, and there's no way I would teach. That's how the adage, "Those who can't, teach" came about. You wouldn't even have to match the software engineer's salary, since 3 months of vacation is something you can't buy in the private sector, but you can't match $40k against what the private sectors pay, even if it's only 75% of the work. - Piaw Na
There are districts in MN that fire most of the teachers every year and make them reapply. It is a terrible way to conduct employees. As the daughter and sister of teachers, I think tenure is a good thing and is sorely needed in places where school referendums aren't passed and losing your job is basically on the ballot. - JoEllen
