“Are you reluctant to 'Like' entries that already have a bunch of likes?”
August 27 at 7:32 am - Link
Nope. I don't even look first. I either like it or I don't. - abacab
why would I be? If I like something, I like something. I'm only reluctantly 'liking' something when the item wording makes it seem like I'm liking something bad. - Alan Le
Nope. I use likes to put an item into my RSS reader for review later on. - Kenneth LeFebvre
I think my threshold for liking something based on the interestingness of the content increases as more people like it. I'll like something that may not be too interesting, but I want to see what other people say about it, which may provoke an interesting discussion, but if the item's got a lot of action already, I'm less concerned about potential interestingness and more concerned with actual interestingness. - Mark Trapp
Not in the slightest. If I like it, it's liked. - A Bat
sometimes I use the "like" button to save something so I can read it, or watch it later, so whether it's a "hot" story at the time doesn't make much difference. - Iain Baker
No. What are you going to do? Run out? Or do you want to be the first one? - Louis Gray
Nope. I think it helps bring things forward that others may have missed when initially posted. - JA Castillo
No. People who subscribe to me will see things when I like them, not when other people they don't subscribe to like them. Plus, I often like things to pull them out later. - Robert Scoble
not at all - Mike Fruchter
no - Rob Diana
Nope - Kyle Lacy
No - simonpure
Louis, while noting your sentiment, people have, in fact, run out of Likes. Mitchell Tsai and edythe/Polly used to run out on a daily basis. Although they did raise the limit again recently. - Mark Trapp
Nope for me it's all down to preference not following a trend!! - Joe Dawson (beta)
no - silpol
No - AJ Kohn
@mark but if you like everything then you like nothing. - Alan Le
@Alan That depends on how much content is actually streaming through your feed. - Shey
I used to like as a way to save for later reading, but now a greasemonkey script does just that. - Mário Pires
No, mostly use it for bookmarking or resharing interesting things with my own list, quite a few of whom don't follow a lot of the people I follow. - Sally Church
No, not really. Plus, I'll admit that I sometimes use "Like" as a bookmark. - ha3rvey
All: Like me and try again. --> http://friendfeed.com/e/9f7401... - Erhan Erdogan
No - Corvida
I'm going to go out on a limb here and declare that the consensus is, no. For the record, I'm just curious, I'm not reluctant at all personally. - Shey
sometimes.. but not usually. - Tim Hoeck
Today is like-bait day ;) - Jesse Stay
Sometimes, yes. It's like when something gets over 1000 Diggs on Digg - who really cares after that. Who will know? - Mark Dykeman
@Mark Yes, that's exactly what I'm asking about, to see if the same thing was happening here on FF - Shey
Groupthink would posit that you're more likely to like popular items in order to be a part of the group. Maybe the online world has a cliff point where the group doesn't really matter. - Tony Lopez
i would say no - (jeff)isageek
nope - Tim Chemacki
No not at all. - tsudohnimh
nope - but i don't commonly like things that i comment on - mike "glemak" dunn
No. My likes are not influenced by others' likes. - Chris Luckhardt
I don't like this question. - Chuck LeDuc Díaz
Nein. If I like it, I Like it. - Abbas Haider Ali
Darned imaginary peer-pressure! - Slippy Lane
If I understand correctly how "like" works, when you like an item, it puts it in your feed for people following you to see. I heard about that yesterday, and I'm pretty sure -- but not 100% sure it's true. So I "like" an item to share with my followers, who might not also be following all those *other* people. - Mitch Wagner
Nope! I am a like finantic! woo hoo! - Susan Beebe
I'm not stingy with my likes - Lindsey

Oooh, nice Kenneth! I knew coffee was on the 'good' list again, but some of those were new to me. Pretty much affirms my dietary regimen: if humans have been eating or drinking it 1000, it's probably not going to kill me. =) - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
If I drank coffee, I would too. The iPod Touch is good, because it is an instant on device and you can get to the internet as soon as you open your eyes - RAPatton

How to Get Around Corporate Internet Blocking Policies «
August 17 at 8:44 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
I think it's stupid when companies block the internet. Bad for employee morale. - Thomas Hawk
I've had to deal with this before, it was such a pain. - Trish R
tunneling through SSH can be a good idea, even if your access isn't blocked :) - Tim Hoeck
Meebo FTW! :) - Mona N.
I worked at a place that was so paranoid they not only blocked things, but they also had keylogger on our machines. I brought my laptop to work until I quit. - Trish R
Trish, LOL! That's a lot smarter than me bribing the Sys Opps team with food haha - Mona N.
A laptop with EVDO trumps corporate internet blocking every time. - Thomas Hawk
SSH, USB Drives, TrueCrypt, and Virtual Machines FTW! - Tim Hoeck
IMHO, Sprint's EVDO is ROCKIN and is the best for mobile data! Too bad the customer service is so terrible :( - Mona N. via fftogo
I've been pretty happy with Verizon's EVDO but it's not cheap. It is much, much faster than 3G on my iPhone. - Thomas Hawk
If I where a manager in a company that decided to block internet access then I would feel more than a little insulted that IT think that I could not manage my staff on my own. I am sure with a little bandwidth shaping or quotas then you could manage the bandwidth. If you find that cute cat videos are taking all your bandwidth then a calm word with the user involved could probably sort things out as they many have a real need. - John Cooper
I never say never, but I simply can't imagine myself accepting a job where I'd have to work all day in such an environment. First, Google is a major reference source for me when I'm troubleshooting or coding. Second, the internet is a major stress release valve for me. Keeping in touch with friends, the world, and diversions over the course of the day helps keep me productive and sane. - Eric P
I work in a place where if I brought my laptop with EVDO in, I'd be arrested. :-( - Bassam Islam
I must be tired. I first read that as: "How to Get Around Chocolate Blocking..." - l0ckergn0me
no internet controls or firewalls at all here - Jeff Quinton
I can't stand WebSense... - Michael Forian
USB ports disabled here. Streaming video not allowed. External IM not allowed (can't install clients). Laptops, not allowed. Personal email, not allowed. VNC, RDP, FTP, SSH, not allowed. Some things are actually blocked, others are not but supposedly all activity is monitored so if you do go somewhere to say, check your personal mail or use GTalk in mail it's probably logged so that they can bring it up later if you get "in trouble" for anything else. The email and IM restrictions bother me the most. - Lindsay Donaghe
So, Lindsay, how long HAVE you been working at Guantanamo? - Akiva Moskovitz
I'll be honest... I seriously thought about quitting after the first week when I realized I couldn't use IM. I have a huge network of former co-workers and friends who I use when Google fails me for answers to technical problems. It helps me do my job... can't do that anymore. And I hate not being able to ping Tad during the day... or have a private conversation. - Lindsay Donaghe
meebo is blocked too? - Jeff Quinton
I couldn't do it. I'm a burst worker and need little 5-10 minute (or, in this case, 3-hour) breaks between furious 30-90 minute work-storms. I'd be bored and frustrated. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Jeff - yeah, any web IM service they know about is blocked... and using one that isn't blocked that they find out about would be grounds for dismissal. - Lindsay Donaghe
Lindsay - and WHY the hell do you still work there? It's not like you're working on cutting edge stuff... - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)
Well, they are actually moving to .Net 3.5 and when I started I was working on a prototype project that they let me use ASP.Net MVC for until we realized that it wouldn't be released for almost a year... I'm doing interesting stuff. I'm not bored and I'm not traveling... other than the communications stuff it's a decent place to work. I needed some stability for a while. We'll see what happens when I get the itch to do something more exciting in 6 months or so. - Lindsay Donaghe
iPhone AIM aint terrible you can get your chat on there! or do they have no cell rules too - Geoff Schultz
I bring my own EVDO connection, too. When the software you build can move Other People's Money around, security needs to be tight... as inconvenient as it might be. - Kenneth LeFebvre
I have everything blocked at work as well. I better not try any messing with the network, either, because this is a large bank that I work for. Just today they blocked Muxtape >:( It was the last in a long line of music sites that I found unblocked that they went back and blocked. My biggest fear is that they'll take my FriendFeed away from me. This place has become essential. Does anyone have some workarounds I might be able to use if it gets blocked, besides fftogo.com? Lindsay's situation sounds similar. - Kamilah Gill

It's cool it uses standard technologies, but under what scenario would you not want to use Weave's host? If you can't use SSL on the personal server scheme, any privacy and security arguments are moot. Even if it supported SSL, what kind of bookmarks would demand privacy and security in a way that you wouldn't want to host them at a service provider? - Paul Whitaker
I don't know how useful the host-it-yourself bit is, but it isn't hard to imagine building interesting services on-top of bookmark syncing. - Ross M Karchner

This is great! Why do people always feel the need to come up with lies to excuse their "policies"? If Wal-Mart just said, "We don't want you to bring a bicycle into the store" it would be much simpler. Don't invent a reason why if you don't know why. :) - Kenneth LeFebvre via Bookmarklet

If you click edit, you can change from "one line" to "short"; hoping there's a global setting, though it's def annoying as a default (and that if i change the preference for one entry of an application, it doesn't set it for all) - Dan Hsiao
Short is definitely much nicer. Didn't see that option. - Benjamin Golub

“What does it really mean when a Marine says "I give you your freedom?"”
July 8 at 8:05 pm - Link
This is a quote (almost verbatim) from a Marine in the PBS special my wife and I watched tonight. - Kenneth LeFebvre
Nothing good, usually. I think I understand what this guy wants to mean, but he basically put it in the most self serving way possible. Usually, there's a "and so I [deserve/require/am god/know better/whatever]" that follows it. Honor their service, but don't put them on a pedestal, if that makes sense. - Sujal Shah
I understand this particular kid's poor wording, but what I'm really getting at is this: How is our military directly giving us freedom? (and I'm not using "freedom" as a synonym for "security") All my life, I've accepted this concept without question (namely, that our military protects our freedom), but when I stop to think about it, I'm wondering whether the rhetoric currently has a solid footing in fact. - Kenneth LeFebvre
Oh, and Sujal, I also recognize the sense of superiority that is common in the military, often excused because of this idea... I am, after all, a former Marine, myself, and have been a pretty "gung ho" patriotic conservative for most of my 40 years on the planet. I, myself, am quite guilty of the same sort of ego reflected by the kids I watched tonight. That's not really the crux of my question, which is really intended to harvest some good alternative opinions from you all, so I can chew on them myself. - Kenneth LeFebvre
