"The difference is this: President Obama doesn’t need to beat his chest to prove it, and – unlike the last Administration – we are not at war with a tactic (“terrorism”), we at war with something that is tangible: al Qaeda and its violent extremist allies. Of course, the Daily Kos had NO "ugly, politically-motivated" attacks against the former administration.
- Glen Campbell, esq.
Daily Kos is hardly an ex-vice president. Cheney's making himself look like a real tool, IMHO.
- Joel Webber
The security system and DHS in place today was built under Cheney, so what did 8 years of tough talk buy us? All the speechifying about "war on terror" does it incite fear in Americans. Did the War on Drugs or War on Poverty get "won"?

I'm just lazy this year. Got invited to a party, but don't really feel like going. I'm planning on spending the weekend over in Santa Cruz, Ca with a long time friend. So I'll make up for the lack of NYE partying a day later....
- Jeff P. Henderson
Come to my place! Thai food, drinks & nibbles, board games, music, nudie run at midnight.
- Mellissa
Man, I've been old for a long time then. I find NYE second only to Valentine's Day for overratedness.
- Kenton
I'm usually not big on partying on NYE either. Normally too wrecked from Christmas/Birthday festivities. Tonight we're going to my mum and dad's because THEY are having a party. But we'll be home long before midnight #3kidsunder6

I like to point the thermometer gun with laser sighting at peoples foreheads and announce they are not sick and they need to get back to work.

Fair enough, if you can cook an egg on your kid's forehead, he's probably pretty sick.

I'll stop at oral temp, thx. Sorry, my back door is closed to unannounced visitors. o.O

Uh, Sorry Vic for sullying your lovely thread...though really, it *is* kinda your fault for mentioning rectal temp. I mean, you *had* to know where it would lead, yes? :P
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Ooh question for you. When reporting an axillary temp to a doc or nurse, do they expect you to have already added the degree difference or not?
- Heather Solos
Now that I think of it, in the ICU, they also use urethral and femoral vein temperatures.
- Victor Ganata
ha3rvey (Ho)^3 Yes, that's known as cartoon temp. ;)
- Melanie Reed
In theory, tympanic temperatures are probably more reflective of core body temperature, but the problem is, for some reason, reproducibility of results is a big problem. http://chestjournal.chestpubs.org/content...
- Victor Ganata
Yeah, I think I'll be opting out of the urethral temp as well. No gadgets in the peehole, thx.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
LOL, just try to relax and think happy thoughts while I insert this thermometer into your rectum. But seriously, if I wasn't already a pessimist, I think my internal medicine training would've easily turned me into one.

Kenton and andrei_c, may you get a smelly 4-year old chair-kicker at your next Imax show.
- Christopher Galtenberg
LOL. I'm always amazed at the places people will take their children.
- Kenton
I'm with you on the train ride to social hell: spent 4 hours the other day listening to a screaming baby in first class. While there's a case to be made for a person who wants to spend way above the economy rate to give their baby luxury that they'll never remember or enjoy, over a dozen other people paid the same rate to have a comfortable ride. What we should do is institute the same...

- Mark Trapp
A baby does not take any of the extra space you paid for in business class. Also, I don't think that tolerance for crying children increases with the row number. Everybody is annoyed.
- Gary Burd
You don't just pay for space, though. Certainly comfort is part of the deal.
- Mark Trapp
This is a tough one. I wouldn't call you a bad person for being annoyed. It can be irritating and travel is already stressful. But I always try to remind myself that babies at least can't control their reactions to air pressure and other things, so the crying isn't something the parents can do much about. On the other hand, business class used to be more for business travelers. However,...

- t toring
Most airlines will put families with small children at the very back of the plane. Could they put families at the very back of business class, too? Although that would suck for the people in the first few rows of economy class...
- cecily
@galtenberg are we talking about smelly & wild children or just any children? If former, I would rephrase post as "stupid parents should not be allowed in business class" which I would possibly agree.
- andrei_c
What I'm saying, you can't disallow kids anywhere just because certain percentage of parents are idiots...
- andrei_c
business class should be reserved for the rich and beautiful, i don't like to see ugly people specially when i pay extra for business class
- t toring
Nope. You're not a bad for that. It's BUSINESS class. I mean...what are people thinking? Would they take their kids with them to a staff meeting.
- Admiral Anika
As my mother would say, when you own an airline, you can make your own rules.
- Louis Gray
Can they create a baby class? I call discrimination. :-)
- Jesse Stay
@admiral if business in business class means business what does first in first class mean?
- t toring
First means you can pay more for a seat. Also, it has nothing to do with the OPs question. There's a time and place for kids. I wouldn't think of taking my kids with me to several places, and they are 4 & 6 and generally well-behaved. Then again, I think that the greater good for society outweighs my convenience. I'm conceited, but not so self-absorbed to think a baby that can't control itself wouldn't chafe fellow passengers in BUSINESS class.
- Admiral Anika
It's much, much easier to handle kids where there is more room than without room (speaking from experience). Ideally, I'd love to see an airline that actually reserves a section specifically targeted towards families and kids. I would pay extra for that. Otherwise, I pick the spot that will be most comfortable to manage my family.
- Jesse Stay
Rich people with babies should fly on private jets. :)
- Cristo
@admiral is BUSINESS class something other than business class
- t toring
Business class is another name for 2nd class. If airlines meant seats with extra room to be used for business only, then the airlines would enforce it at ticketing.
- Gary Burd
Unless the ticket states 'and we will not allow anyone else on the plane or in your section that bothers you' then that baby's ticket is as valid as anyone else.
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Thanks for all the comments. I feel like kind of a jerk. Best solution would definitely be a family oriented section in airplanes.
- Nelson Minar
When we fly with a baby, we only fly first class. If I'm going have my baby with me (and associated baby gear), I need the extra space and comfort. Being packed like sardines in coach is miserable enough, but having to have a baby and baby accessories also packed into that small space makes it even worse. I'll pay the extra money and get the extra space. That said, I've never flown with the baby on a flight that had business class. For us, it's always just been a choice between first class or coach.
- Rochelle
+1 Family Class, with their own bathroom, soundproofed and separated with a door, not a curtain. People who bring their bloody dogs on the plane should have to sit there too.
- EricaJoy
Family class would be great! I don't see that ever happening, though. :)
- Rochelle
Of course not, but since we're talking about things that will never happen (lol, telling parents where they can't sit because of babies)...
- EricaJoy
if you can afford to take the family + babies on First class ... then take them first class
- johnpiercy
My opinion's may be a bit biased because the absolute WORST experience I had flying was with babies, but a strange situation. I was seated in business class for 14hr trip to Italy. I was in last business class row which was divided from coach by a thin plastic wall, that was equipped with a small baby table, of course, albeit a few hours spread the duration of the flight I was FORCED to...

Where did these people get it in their heads that their software was payware? I wonder if they've actually collected a single license.
- Matthew DeVries
Yeah, time to switch to 7zip.

I'll stick with my oldware. No reason for upgrading it or switching to something else, yet. (really loving that free license for WinRAR)
- April Russo (app103)
I've been using 7zip for years. It's super fast and light.
- Rodfather
7zip opens RAR. I don't think it can create them.
- Alex Scrivener
Matthew, have you ever downloaded a copy of WinZip? It says all over the place that you have to pay for it. The last company I worked for where it was used we had licenses for it because otherwise we were out of compliance and the BSA doesn't like that. However, there is almost no reason to use WinZip anymore since MS built it into Windows and 7Zip will do everything else.
- Kenton
From the WinZip site - "Did you think WinZip was free? Many people have this misconception (probably because we offer a free evaluation version), but WinZip has never been free software. So if you plan to use WinZip beyond the 45-day evaluation period, please be sure to buy your official license."
- Kenton
The mind boggles at the concept of paying for winzip.
- Tad
Winzip was the shizzle bak in the day and lots of companies payed for it because it helped with email attachments big time, but since Win XP and bigger hard drives, it's need is limited.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com

Since WinXP? I think you mean WinME, which just like XP, also didn't need a separate application installed to create or open .zip files. (WinME was released between 2K & XP and contains a lot of things not included in 2k but was included in XP)

Did you criticize Bush for his slow response to Katrina? Then you've got no room to defend Obama.
- Jason Trommetter
Is that a serious argument? Are you saying that not rushing back to the White House after an attempted bombing is the same thing as bungling relief aid to an area where thousands of people were dying/stranded etc? And no, I didn't criticize Bush for that BTW. What do you think Obama should have done?
- Kenton
I think Obama should have cut his vacation short and promptly fly to an undisclosed location just like Bush/Cheney after 9/11. Obama is so self-absorbed that he couldn't cut into his "me time."
- Jason Trommetter
Do you think that if he was in danger he'd have any say in where he went and when? It is just an excuse to criticize him. If the president was to jump in his plane and hide every time there was a possibility of danger the US would be a laughing stock and people like you would be calling him a coward.

I once worked a temp job at a help desk for a company where we had to wear official blazers with the company logo. Their employees in cubicles could only have a maximum of 3 personal items in view in the cubicles. One of the worst jobs EVAR.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
I would rather be required to have 15 pieces of flair than have to work in a sanitized cubbie. (My office has toys.) *whistles toy-r-us theme*

I wonder if I could have brought in my Nerf gatling gun as ONE personal item.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
Weirdly, when I worked direct desktop support, I would have killed for a uniform. Most women's business attire is REALLY not suited to crawling under desks, and at least 50% of women's dress pants don't have pockets.
- Jennifer Dittrich
@Jennifer So true! I was always very firm with my mgmt that if I was to be moving servers and the like, I was not going to come in wearing slacks, a nice shirt, and heels. I never got any shit for it.
- EricaJoy
Interesting thought. If they view the other people in the company as customers of IT, then it is no different from Geeks on Call, etc. Also, most IT people will do just about anything for a shirt with a logo on it, so if that's all it is they probably wouldn't complain much. It is a hell of a lot better than having to wear a tie while crawling under people's desks. Disclaimer: I am an IT person and former customer support worker.
- Kenton
Mind you, I have been known to trade Google schwag with coworkers because i love my company. When I worked at Home Depot? No. You couldn't pay me to wear a Home Depot shirt (which is funny since I have a ridiculous amount of THD schwag). Same thing with Scientific Games.
- EricaJoy
My rule back in the day: If I move servers, I'm wearing Levis...get over it :)
- Susan Beebe
"many airlines and government security agencies adopted measures that have become typical following what have been thankfully very few airline terrorism attempts. In other words, they were reactive, draconian, and unlikely to accomplish anything except delay flights and inconvenience passengers. These measures included forbidding any personal items -- blankets, pillows, electronics, etc. -- on passengers' laps for one hour before landing. Also, some airlines turned off their in-flight entertainment and communications systems for the entire flight."
- John E. Bredehoft
We were on a Canadian-based flight that entered US airspace for less than 2 minutes and as a result there was no in-flight entertainment on the flight for the entire trip.

@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. MF/Kol = I live in Kingston on Thames. It's OK apart from the traffic (continually gridlocked) and the shops (girls just lurve them). Handy for getting into London both airports and out to the Thames Valley for work type things. Richmond Park and the river in walking distance is great too.

Definitely Fairytale of New York, or Death Cab for Cutie's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", or Baby, It's Cold Outside. Non-pop: I have always had a soft-spot for Do You Hear What I Hear? and O Holy Night.

Julian Casablancas has released a pretty good Xas tune.
- Kol Tregaskes
I loooove Christmas music so I have lots. Some of my faves though: Song for a Winter's Night, River, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, In the Bleak Midwinter, and the Claymation version of We Three Kings.
- Kenton
I'm glad I'm not the only one who prefers Fairytale of New York! :-)
- vicster is...
Although I love them all, I would have to say "Bells Of Christmas" always triggered my interest :D

Oh! I always forget, I absolutely love Carol of the Bells & I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm (especially as sung by my former high school's Jazz choir — I still have their CD, haha). AND Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Canon" is beautiful.

Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O

Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.
- Peter Ghosh
Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.
- Sparky
i've been trying to formulate a comment for this for days, but i just...can't.
- joey
I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.

For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.

The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.

Holy fuck, after two full days of training in which she's looked bored & taken hardly any notes, we just realized the trainee does not even understand the concept of a request for quote. She doesn't seem to understand the difference between a customer and a supplier, despite them generally being on different continents. NOT GOOD.
Sorry for the f-bomb, but DAMN. The only small consolation is that when she takes over completely, I will be observing the resulting disaster from a comfortable distance.
- Lo
I'm having a really hard time not showing irritation when I explain stuff to her. My co-worker has mostly done the training for me, but she's on vacation next week. I only have to be nice enough that she doesn't quit immediately...
- Lo
LOL Jeremy. The sad reality is this job is way too complicated for the pay grade, only underachievers like me can handle it. Our annual turnover is something like 150%
- Lo
How old is she? When I was 18, I was dumb as a stick too. Maybe she'll grow into the position. :P
- Ken Morley
No clue, I'm a terrible judge of age. She's older than 18, though. Mid-20s I'd guess. She probably will do fine in the long term, if she makes it. January will be interesting, though. (it doesn't help that we've had a LOT of problems lately, more than usual even for working with China). Also, I doubt you were ever dumb as a stick Ken! :)
- Lo
Yup, to be honest I've already considered what will happen if & when she quits/is fired after a few weeks. If the company pays I'll fly back for round 2, I guess.
- Lo
I did some amazingly stupid things. I still have the scars. :o)

- Rodfather
I talked w/my co-worker, who filled me on stuff she said when I wasn't around or in Mandarin. We think it's less of a dumb problem and more of a don't-care-enough-to-try problem. Which is still not great.
- Lo
Who the hell is in charge of hiring there?
- Spidra Webster
this sounds like about half of the people my boss gave me to train up as an assistant back in my publishing days. why i was never involved in the hiring process is beyond me. i ended up with 5 people making messes for me to clean up (when they weren't just sitting on their asses and gold bricking, which i eventually preferred) and generally pissing off the people i was trying to help.
- Joe Silence
Spidra, the same boss (CEO) responsible for every messed-up work story I tell. The office manager was theoretically involved as well, but she's become a yes-man to the CEO (for her own safety). I used to be involved, esp when it so clearly involves me, but boss apparently doesn't trust me anymore... today he justified my continued employment by saying "I'll go with the devil I know." Not everybody went to management school, I guess... :)
- Lo
Joe, that sounds very lame! The bright spot (a big one) here is that I really won't have to deal too closely with the mess, if there is one. The downside is, I can leave as soon as she knows what she's doing... so I may have to keep working after New Year's. I suppose I could use the money. I'm just tired of this holding-pattern-between-lives crap.
- Lo
Maybe you could back track a bit... some sort of remedial session on things like "What is money? What does money do? Is money good to have? Do we want more money? Where do we get money? How do we get money? Do customers give us money? Do suppliers give us money? Does money grow on trees?"
- Mark "Lykkelig Nyt Ǻr" J
LOL Mark! But thank you, that's actually sort of good advice. I should probably back it up to the basics. My real plan is next week she just has to do my job, period. She's allowed to ask any questions she wants, but I'm not going to direct her. She's going to sit at my desk and deal with whatever comes. This should force her to accept and admit that she's clueless.
- Lo
I only care because they took an iconic brand of well made cars and turned it into a cheap shell of its former self producing the same crap that GM has been producing for too long.
- Kenton
Au contraire ! Saab has a great history (turbo, fighter jets, +++), and besides, Norwegian Bård Eker and people from the Koenigsegg supercar company were in negotiations with GM to buy Saab, but GM chose to sell just parts of Saab tech to the Chinese and kill the rest of the company instead, and that´s sad.
- Thomas Bøhm
Companies that wish to retain their history and heritage should not sell out to large multinationals.

from IM
How awful! I had a Saab 900S back in the 80's, before GM stepped in. I have many fond memories of that car. I wasn't at all happy when GM got involved w/Saab. Now, killing the brand, that is really sad...

Yess, I do care also, SAAB is a wonderful brand that should stick around. Even if it is *shudders* Swedish
- Rasmus Lauridsen
When I was much younger, I really wanted a Saab. That desire kinda fizzled out a few years after GM took away everything special about the brand.
- Tad
I owned a fantastic Saab 900S Convertible and loved it! I definitely care, because I thought that was the best car I ever owned, and I want another one. I will hope that Spyker saves the company and keeps it alive. You don't have to care, plenty of other people do.
- Bette Cooper
Your right I really don't care about Snaab. Actually I don't even really care about Saab either.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
The chinese wanted the tech so that they could leapfrog the R&D process of getting tech that would pass regulations (crash test safety, emissions, etc) -- also one of the reasons that Hummer was bought by a chinese company. These chinese companies will now have their 'foot in the door' (so to speak) for selling cars in the US. --- there still might be a chance that saab will be 'saved' but it's not looking good right now
- Chris Heath
A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it. That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB - http://inothernews.tumblr.com/post...
So I had to calculate this out: the HGP estimates that the human genome is about 3 billion base pairs (3Gbp) long (Their count includes 22 chromosomes+X+Y) which can be used as an estimate for how many base pairs are in a haploid gamete. Since each base pair can have 4 different values (A-T/T-A/G-C/C-G) a base pair basically encodes 2 bits of information. So 3 billion base pairs = 6 gigabits = 750 MB. On average, there are about 250 million sperm per ejaculation, so that comes (pardon the pun) to 1.875 petabytes of information. Of course, there's a lot of redundancy in that information, but 1.875 petabytes in about 2 teaspoons of volume is impressive in terms of information density. (Bear in mind, my mathematical skills are fairly weak, and I could've gotten this calculation very wrong.)

I don't think it's possible for me to love this entire conversation more than I do RIGHT NOW. And I love all of you for making it happen.

@jeff: it shouldn't; the testicles will still produce the same volume of sperm as before. They just won't go anywhere. The body reabsorbs the sperm over time. So...kind of like performing a regularly-scheduled defrag?

Isn't the overwhelming fraction of the human genome "junk DNA"?
- Andrew C
My favorite science post ever. Easily.
- Jason Huebel
"Junk DNA" is kind of a misnomer, though. It's more accurate to say we don't really know what they do. Some sequences are pseudogenes, which are evolutionary relics. Other sequences are retrotransposons--molecular parasites that embed themselves into an organism's genome and copy themselves endlessly. But there are areas of non-coding DNA that are involved in the regulation of gene...
