Research in Motion announced plans to cut about 2,000 jobs, or 11 percent of its global workforce. North American employees will begin to receive their notices this week. Business analysts have speculated part of those losses can be attributed to RIM's failure to keep up with its competitors in the communications market, such as Apple and Google. The late launch of its iPad-like tablet, the PlayBook, is considered a specific failure.

RIM has a huge problem with strategy and leadership. I'm struggling to understand how cutting some costs will solve this.
- Winckel
Allows them to spend more on the Apple TV killer they are working on.. #RIMShot
- Me
Henry, that is exactly the sentiment of the article: "The cuts also won't make any difference to RIM's current market share." The changes in management may be a different story, but I doubt it.
- Stephan Planken
Apparently 1500 of those being laid off have been hired since February this year. If so, they have big problems.

@Kenton - a large number of Vancouverites at large were out for essentially mob justice after the riots a few weeks ago. Wouldn't surprise me at all if a lot of people felt the same way with the Casey Anthony case.
- Andrew C (✓)
Good point @Andrew, although at least there was (in many cases) conclusive proof that those people were lighting police cars on fire or looting stores.
- Kenton
Even so, it was shocking to see people call for extrajudicial resolution.

Husband just got a new job. he's never really worked in a "business" environment before. I'm still thinking this place must be business casual and he didn't understand that - but he claims it's "business"... He's short (no pun intended) on long sleeve shirts - since it is summer - should we bother investing in a bunch of long sleeve shirts? or can he get away with short until the fall?
- Nathalie
I'm certainly no expert, but as long as they are just short-sleeved version of long sleeved shirts, I don't see why he couldn't wear them.
- Kenton
What Kenton said. Unless it's a seriously formal environment, I'd think those shirts should do, esp if you live somewhere hot.
- Spidra Webster
Calgary does get quite hot in the summer.
- Nathalie
My boss does that all the time - short sleeved dress shirt, tie. When we're working with customers, guys have to wear suit/tie, and he gets too warm with the long-sleeved shirts except in winter.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Good stuff! hubby will be very happy to hear that! (as will our bank account!)

They're switching to a rapid release cycle like Chrome. They expect to be at 7.0 by the end of the year.
- Kenton
I was just looking for something noticeable in 5.0. It looks the same to me. Anyway, it still has those banging add-ons, but I am primarily on Chrome these days too.
- Eric - seven eleven
From what I've read, most of the changes are in the internal workings of the browser and not the user interface.
- John (bird whisperer)
lol yeah they’re speeding up the release cycle. 6 and 7 are due for this year also. Javascript speed, memory use are improved and the ‘do not track’ feature has been added. I'd move back to Firefox if only I could bring gleebox with me. I still use it for firebug tho. But… why is this in the Hip Hop room?
- Remo
I said the same thing. I've only upgraded to Firefox 4.0 on one of my machines. and that was last week.
- jbrotherlove
Five is fast...I'm using it instead of chrome on my work computer.

"I saw this over the weekend, but filed it away, but Bristol Palin is essentially claiming that she was raped by Levi Johnston, yes?"
- Victor Ganata
Not that I don't trust what she's saying but there would sure have been some weird stuff going on for her parents to allow them to go ahead and get married. I would have thought that with the values the Palin's supposedly have they would have gone for a rape charge rather than having her marry the guy. Doesn't totally add up for me, but I'm sure not interested enough to go and buy the book to read more.

A future without limits begins with valuing art - KansasCity.com - I feel for the artists of Kansas. *All* state funding for arts programs was cut there recently. I hope Indiana won't go down such a stupid path. The photo is of the writer of this piece, Kansas opera star Joyce DiDonato. - http://www.kansascity.com/2011...
"With one, autonomous slash of the pen, every state penny for the arts in my home of Kansas has vanished, simultaneously obliterating all matching federal funds. This is the Sunflower State that I have proudly boasted about across the world, fearlessly defending it even in the face of harsh quizzical looks from the most skeptical of folks (“You live where?”). It’s the state of my first piano recital and choir concert. The home field of my artistic curiosity and education. The homeland that taught me to freely dream big and without limitation; one where the arts were once alive, vibrant and supported. I’ve welcomed the assumption of being an unsolicited but mightily proud artistic ambassador for Kansas to the great cities of the world. Now, for the first time, I feel shame. Eliminating a state arts commission is an ignorant, short-sighted, fearful and unspeakably damaging act to the spirit and soul of this great state."

"TPM has confirmed that after weeks of increasingly embarrassing revelations and building pressure from within his own party, Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) will on Thursday resign his seat in Congress. He told Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) of his decision on Wednesday evening. On Thursday morning, TPM witnessed staffers leaving his Capitol Hill office, turning out the lights with boxes of belongings in hand."

Awww, now what are the media going to do? Bring on another scandal please so they don't have to focus on anything important.
- Kenton
Good riddance, asshole. If he had resigned a few days ago, the world wouldn't now be treating him so harshly. He managed to destroy nearly all his support within his own party.
- Sean McBride
yeah now he will be a host on CNN soon :)- remember spitzer ??
- Peter Dawson
By the way, I predicted this. :) Not difficult: the outcome was guaranteed from the moment the scandal broke. I was surprised that he took so long to resign, however.
- Sean McBride
Now, my true feelings about Weiner: I feel sorry for him and hope that he gets back on his feet as soon as possible. I hope he gets emotional support from his family and friends. He messed up a bit, but not nearly as much as many other people. The problem was that he messed up on the wrong stage.
- Sean McBride
I feel sympathy for every suffering living creature on the planet, even when they have brought the suffering on themselves. I guess you could call me a bleeding heart. :)

In healthy participants and compared with no exposure, 50-minute cell phone exposure was associated with increased brain glucose metabolism in the region closest to the antenna. This finding is of unknown clinical significance. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed...
People talk on the phone for 50 minutes at a time?!
- Rochelle
I've been on my cell phone for longer than that for tech support calls, but it isn't a regular thing.
- Katy S
Is that the root of this whole WHO thing, or is that a different study?
- Kenton
The one they cite in the monograph noted "a 40% increased risk for glioma in the highest category of heavy users (reported average: 30 minutes per day over a 10-year period)" I'll see if I can find it.
- Victor Ganata
I think this was the study: Mobile phone use and risk of acoustic neuroma: results of the Interphone case-control study in five North European countries. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed...
- Victor Ganata
The study's summary: "...our findings do not support an increased risk of acoustic neuroma in the first decade after starting mobile phone use. For 10 or more years of use, there was an increased risk of tumours ipsilateral to reported phone use, of uncertain interpretation."
- Victor Ganata
This category is used for agents for which there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. It may also be used when there is inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans but there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. In some instances an agent for which there is inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals together with supporting evidence from mechanistic and other relevant data may be placed in this group. An agent may be classified in this category solely on the basis of strong evidence from mechanistic and other relevant data.
- Victor Ganata
So this is where they put stuff when everyone is pressuring them to rate it as cancer causing but they really have no proof that it is.
- Kenton
There are some positive studies. They just don't reach the level that they would consider adequate or sufficient.
- Victor Ganata
There is only one chemical in the lowest, "doesn't cause cancer" category.
- Alex Scrivener
I wouldn't worry too much about Group 3 agents either, though. Lots of things cause cancer. Given the incidence and prevalence of cancer, I don't think this should be surprising.
- Victor Ganata
I am with you Rochelle. Creates problems when creating fruit salad though 'cause it seems my wife always wants to use melon to bulk it up.
- Brian Sullivan
My dog used to eat watermelon -- down to the rind - so she and I didn't really see eye to eye on this-- she ate corn from the cob too though so I guess she was weird.
- Brian Sullivan
WTF is wrong with you people?! Love me some melons! Oh, wait...not those melons. :/
- JA Castillo
JA, my comment first said "I don't like any melons" but I edited to "melon". For clarity, you know.
- Rochelle
I like it if it is cut up into little cubes I can pick-up with a fork.
- Kenton
It's not summer if there isn't watermelon.
- Heather
Well I have no objection to watermelon being or even representing summer (or if other people eat it). I just don't care for the cloying taste, mealy texture or annoying seeds.
- Brian Sullivan
I'm not a fan. I am skilled at spitting the seeds long distances though. Go figure.
