English orthography is a bitch, and I'm not the greatest speller in the world, but ugh...its seems that word is spelled wrong more often than not.

I guess people who spell it wrong are analyzing the "re..." as re- , a prefix. I wonder if they also tend to pronounce the word [ri 'dI ..] rather than [rI 'dI...]

if you are commenting on a post from a liberal person and in your reply you make the assertion that their opinions are red iculous. Or if in your reply you want to make it known what side of the fence your on.

I'd like to just get rid of vowels in English orthography and use vowel marks instead. Then the hair on the back of my scalp won't stand up when I see things like that. Oh, and also: "definately." GAAAHHH!
- Eph Zero
Right, because some things are finate, and some things are infinate, and some things are definate.
- Christopher A Carr
There must be papers on English morphological awareness and orthographical competence among native speakers. Or do you suppose people who spell it "definately" would also produce "finate?" Perhaps the root sort of hides in the affixation. Had I actually paid attention to the "applied" part of the "applied linguistics" education, I would probably know this stuff.
- Christopher A Carr
oh, i thought the red line was there to emphasize it. thanks for the tip. ... :) ... I wondered why the computer was always wanting to emphasize so many words. It seemed a bit rediculous to me.
- SuezanneC Baskerville
No, I think you're right, Christopher. It's those darned unstressed syllables messing everything up. But words feel different in my head based on the spelling, even if they are homophones. It makes me feel all creepy-crawly to think of the way those words must feel inside other people's heads.
- Eph Zero
The home automation / home theater world is weird. Apparently Do-It-Yourself (DYI) is a bad word there for high-end systems. Companies like Crestron and URC only sell to dealers. They claim it's because they can only assure quality this way, but I suspect it's more their business model of selling certification to installers.
This world needs to be consumerized and open-sourced. Why do I want to spend huge amounts of money for a system I have to call someone to change? It's not like these installers are super geniuses. They aren't inventing some new programming language or writing all the device drivers themselves. They're installing. Let us programmers write our own code.
- Cristo
I bet all this stuff could be run on Android and would work better. Controller and remotes.
- Cristo
It's because you need an expert to set up complete home automation. This just isn't knowledge that consumers possess. And of course they want to make money on the sales of software.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, I'm a consumer. Are you saying I couldn't do it? There are hundreds of thousands of programmers in the world, most of which could set up their own systems, and would probably want to. Most installers are doing little more than creating macros. Would you want the cable company coming out every time you wanted to record a new season pass or enter a favorite channel?
- Cristo
This is also a way of masking how lame their software is. They don't want to deal with the customer service issues. Eventually there will be companies that are actually good at user experience and software that will replace them.
- Cristo
Yes, Chris, I'm saying that you couldn't do it in any reasonable time frame. You would be recreating the wheel in so many ways. And Crestron's business model is very sound. They push off tier one support to installers and only have to deal with the really complicated problems. They don't want someone like you calling them up asking about every little thing that an installer already knows. You are not who Crestron sells to and they are probably quite fine with that.

Definitely Fairytale of New York, or Death Cab for Cutie's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", or Baby, It's Cold Outside. Non-pop: I have always had a soft-spot for Do You Hear What I Hear? and O Holy Night.

All you have to do is take some photos – which you never delete from your camera – so when someone finds your camera at the bottom of the gorilla pit they are able to locate you and return the lost property to its rightful owner. http://www.andrewmcdonald.net.au/a-picto...
I like how everything is clear and readable except the email address.
- Alex Scrivener
LOL That's funny, but yeah...what's with the email address being so small?
- Admiral Anika
At any rate, I had a video I made with all my info on it. I accidentally took it off my chip, but I'm positive I copied it to my camera. Unfortunately, I don't know how to access my camera's memory and the cord has been lost. One of these days, I'll RTFM. =)

I like how the facial expressions match the whiteboard :-)

The other pics build empathy, encouraging a border-line thief to return the camera. Otherwise you may as well stick a label on the case and be done with it.

Does anyone else want to make out with this guy for being SO DAMN AWESOME? Srsly, total panty-dropper this one was.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
wow, this is very close to being the most popular thing I have ever posted to Friendfeed. Just goes to show, um, something. Always use pictures?
- Alex Scrivener
I'm the opposite. I tend to ignore posts with photos (unless the post itself is just a photo). Why? The image usually detracts from the text and people spend time talking about the picture and making it clear they didn't bother to read the text or link.
- Admiral Anika
=/ (not about the original post. I already expressed how much I love it)
- Kamilah Gill
Or you could just put an address sticker on the camera...
- Alix Whitmire
No, the pictures try to build an emotional connection with the finder. It helps convince a not-so-honest person to return the camera rather than just keep it. It won't stop a real thief, but it could tip the odds in his favor. A sticker can't do that.
- Alex Scrivener
There should be a place in your camera for email address, like cell phones have "Home" so when you lose it, someone can call you. Hmmmm.
- anna sauce
I wouldn't ever think to go through pics, but if I found a lost cam (or phone or whatever) with an address clearly visible on it, I'd pop it in the mail, or call/email someone, no problem. Same holds true for some lost and found places. They might call you if there's easy contact info, but I don't see them taking the time to flip through photos to figure out how. Maybe do both?
- Alix Whitmire
I was putting a README.txt file on my USB sticks with contact info if it got lost. This is way better! Now take this board with your contact info.... smile, no! put a sad face.... and you're done!
- Nenad Nikolic
This is now far and away the most popular thing I have ever posted. Even got a FFundercats Best of the Week!

I only care because they took an iconic brand of well made cars and turned it into a cheap shell of its former self producing the same crap that GM has been producing for too long.
- Kenton
Au contraire ! Saab has a great history (turbo, fighter jets, +++), and besides, Norwegian Bård Eker and people from the Koenigsegg supercar company were in negotiations with GM to buy Saab, but GM chose to sell just parts of Saab tech to the Chinese and kill the rest of the company instead, and that´s sad.

Companies that wish to retain their history and heritage should not sell out to large multinationals.

How awful! I had a Saab 900S back in the 80's, before GM stepped in. I have many fond memories of that car. I wasn't at all happy when GM got involved w/Saab. Now, killing the brand, that is really sad...

When I was much younger, I really wanted a Saab. That desire kinda fizzled out a few years after GM took away everything special about the brand.
- Chrimmus Tad
I owned a fantastic Saab 900S Convertible and loved it! I definitely care, because I thought that was the best car I ever owned, and I want another one. I will hope that Spyker saves the company and keeps it alive. You don't have to care, plenty of other people do.
- Bette Cooper
Your right I really don't care about Snaab. Actually I don't even really care about Saab either.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
The chinese wanted the tech so that they could leapfrog the R&D process of getting tech that would pass regulations (crash test safety, emissions, etc) -- also one of the reasons that Hummer was bought by a chinese company. These chinese companies will now have their 'foot in the door' (so to speak) for selling cars in the US. --- there still might be a chance that saab will be 'saved' but it's not looking good right now

“To reiterate, Demi is a beautiful woman who needs no help from retouching. This was never about her, nor about retouching - I have no problem with either. Further, I feel bad that Demi is on defense - she should not have to defend other people's mistakes; W Magazine should be addressing this rather than her. Having said that, she did raise the stakes considerably yesterday by posting what she claims is the original unretouched shot, along with the accusation that ‘these people’ (presumably Xeni and me) are ‘bullshitting.’”

@Brian: W Magazine has said nothing beyond their original unattributed remarks to Jezebel; Mert & Marcus (the photogs) have said nothing (& I don't blame them); the celebutard blogosphere is alight with breathless speculation/anticipation; Demi has not responded to this round, no.

Why is it that these "issues" always seem to be as much about keeping the name of some self-aggrandizing "celeb-media" muckraker in the center of the spotlight as about the supposed "celebrity" who may or may not deserve to be part of the issue? "Demi's Hip-gate?" Seriously? In my humble opinion, self-styled and almost-by-default-self-important media reporters need to get a life! A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it. That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB - http://inothernews.tumblr.com/post...
So I had to calculate this out: the HGP estimates that the human genome is about 3 billion base pairs (3Gbp) long (Their count includes 22 chromosomes+X+Y) which can be used as an estimate for how many base pairs are in a haploid gamete. Since each base pair can have 4 different values (A-T/T-A/G-C/C-G) a base pair basically encodes 2 bits of information. So 3 billion base pairs = 6 gigabits = 750 MB. On average, there are about 250 million sperm per ejaculation, so that comes (pardon the pun) to 1.875 petabytes of information. Of course, there's a lot of redundancy in that information, but 1.875 petabytes in about 2 teaspoons of volume is impressive in terms of information density. (Bear in mind, my mathematical skills are fairly weak, and I could've gotten this calculation very wrong.)

@jeff: it shouldn't; the testicles will still produce the same volume of sperm as before. They just won't go anywhere. The body reabsorbs the sperm over time. So...kind of like performing a regularly-scheduled defrag?

Isn't the overwhelming fraction of the human genome "junk DNA"?
- Andrew C
My favorite science post ever. Easily.
- Jason Huebel
"Junk DNA" is kind of a misnomer, though. It's more accurate to say we don't really know what they do. Some sequences are pseudogenes, which are evolutionary relics. Other sequences are retrotransposons--molecular parasites that embed themselves into an organism's genome and copy themselves endlessly. But there are areas of non-coding DNA that are involved in the regulation of gene...

It's quite an ear opener as she winds up her vocal histrionics. Most impressive. I've been very reticent of Glee for some reason, but that episode made me pay attention.

Rackspace, a year ago and earlier, was an awesome company. Now the service goes down catastrophically every couple of months, one hand doesn't talk to the other, and are much less responsive to basic business concerns. Anyone a Rackspace expatriate who has had better service elsewhere?
- Mark Trapp
While I try to get through to them, I'm just going to talk about all the ways Rackspace has failed as a vendor over the past year. 1) Had a contract renewal in October. We signed the new contract, waited 2 weeks for them to send back the executed contract. Nothing. Call them up, ask them what's happening, and they say they don't execute contracts unless explicitly requested to. That's not how contract law works.
- Mark Trapp
Today is the 4th time this year all of our servers are down and we have no way of reaching our support team. Instead of allowing their customers to reach their support teams so we can notify our clients and users, Rackspace chooses to update their blog. That's not fanatical service, that's lame service.
- Mark Trapp
Just had an issue where all of our users mysteriously couldn't access our secure FTP server that we use for critical day-to-day operation. It took them 5 hours and several attempts to blame the problem on me to figure out it was a security update they rolled out and didn't tell anyone about. The next day, we lose access to the server again because they rolled out the same security update they told us we would be exempt from.
- Mark Trapp
Going back to the contract renewal, prior to this year, we've been able to work with them in negotiating a fair contract, most of the time prices went down (because that's how technology prices work). This year, no change in price. Upon negotiating, their counteroffer was for us to get different servers and do a complete manual migration over to them on our own dime. Yeah, that's fanatical service.
- Mark Trapp
In the past year, we've had 5 different account managers and I lost count of how many business development consultants. Each time, we had to re-explain to them what exactly we do and what our business needs are. It may be just me, but fanatical service involves taking notes.
- Mark Trapp
Every time we've had a catastrophic failure, we were told it'll never happen again. Famous last fanatical words. The last time this happened, I asked for extra reassurance. They told me it was a problem with one datacenter (conveniently, the one we're in) and that they could move us to another data center, but the manual migration would be on our dime. How fanatical!
- Mark Trapp
Yeah -- all our Jungle Disk remotes and mail are down as well (but those are not mission critical). I would say their credibility is not high.
- Brian Sullivan
Still can't get through to my support team.
- Mark Trapp
I am beginning to think that Robert may have been hired to be the chief apologist.
- Brian Sullivan
He's not doing a very good job at it. I'm really looking for a reason as to why I should stay with Rackspace other than the expense of migration.
- Mark Trapp
Twitter is lit up like a Christmas tree -- hundreds -- maybe thousands of tweets.
- Brian Sullivan
Looks like my RackSpace-hosted JungleDisk's still functional. for what it's worth. (I only used RS since they waive the data transfer/bandwidth fees for uploading and downloading data, unlike S3). Not sure which data centre the content is hosted in though.
- Tyson Key
JungleDisk was not functional for me -- but it just came back up. Email looks like it is back as well.
- Brian Sullivan
Finally got through. Was told nobody knows what happened and that they'll notify us. Yeah, that's not fanatical service. Trying to get ahold of someone else there.
- Mark Trapp
It was a "network related outage" and that I should "check the blog for updates."
- Mark Trapp
Spoke to someone, who's apparently my new account manager because my now-old manager is away for a month, and I should get an incident report as soon as they have it. Was offered the same "we can transfer you to another data center" manually and on our dime thing again.
- Mark Trapp
Wow, I don't even know how I would respond to that. Good luck.
- joey
That might give you some insights in to what's going on, Mark.
- Alex Scoble
That's pretty much what they told me. They also told me it affected only the Dallas-Fort Worth datacenter, all other datacenters were fine.
- Mark Trapp
We had all the same problems with Rackspace, so we left for SoftLayer. Do yourself a favor and get the hell out of there. It's not going to get better. Just ask @racker420.
- Alex Wolfe
Thanks Alex for the referral. It's frustrating because before 2009, Rackspace was unbelievably awesome, I recommended them to dozens of people, and wouldn't have ever thought of leaving them. What a difference a year makes.

My sister is currently in Korea. She said that this weird man came up to her asking if she was alone, where she was staying, and if she had anyone around. I think he was a human trafficker; she thinks terrorist. Either way, that is scary. Ladies traveling alone, be careful and weary of people around you.
My question- has that guy been successful with that line of questioning? Seems obvious.

"human trafficker" don't speak to victims. The monitor and then scoop the victim up. Its a business and they are really well organized. Thats why its called as Organized Crime. FWIW, I think its a lost in translation moment.

Over at the Getty Images Contributor Group on Flickr (it’s private and you have to be an accepted Flickr/Getty photographer in order to see it) there have been a number of threads started over the past few months where Getty/Flickr contributors have posted and shared basic information about how their sales are going through the Flickr/Getty partnership thus far. While it is probably far too early to accurately ascertain a lot of the statistics on how things are truly going, I thought I’d compile some of this information as anecdotal.
