"The question these companies should be asking is, “How do we keep reporting and publishing good content?” Instead, though, they’re asking “How do we keep making enough money to support our existing management and advertising divisions?” It’s dinosaurs and mammals."

This small difference between how social networks are formed makes a huge difference in the usefulness of the social network. If I follow someone on Twitter it isn't because they are my "friend" it is because they are good twitterers.

"The Israelis on Saturday killed 5% of all the Palestinians they have killed since the beginning of 2001. 230 people were slaughtered in a day, over 70 of them innocent civilians. In contrast, from the ceasefire Hamas announced in June, 2008 until Saturday, no Israelis had been killed by Hamas. The infliction of this sort of death toll is known in the law of war as a disproportionate response, and it is a war crime."

I supported the initial (actually the second) bailout without illusions, and I think the timing was critical for averting a much worse disaster. I truly progressive bailout was not possible under Bush. Now Obama is coming into power and many of the proposals here are ones he gave lip-service to in his campaign. But I don't think we can leave it to Obama to push these things through. There needs to be a broad grassroots movement to ensure that these promises are kept.

I've long supported a Tobin tax. I hope the current crisis will be a catalyst for getting people to start talking about this again. It is unfortunate that Tobin and Krugman saw the pro-Tobin tax movement as "coming from the wrong side" because of the association of groups like ATTAC. But Krugman has changed his tune over the past eight years, and Tobin is dead. Its time to try again!

"It’s hard to avoid the sense that Mr. Paulson’s initial response was distorted by ideology. Remember, he works for an administration whose philosophy of government can be summed up as “private good, public bad,” which must have made it hard to face up to the need for partial government ownership of the financial sector."
