"Nice review Brad. I'm re-running my battery tests using the Battery Eater Reader mode, which essentially leaves the machine pretty idle. I used fairly aggressive power management settings. More to follow because I only ran the test on Windows 7 -- the battery died after just over 10 hours with basically no load. I'll do the same with XP tomorrow and see how it fares. Also of note: even with Windows 7 and the latest available Toshiba software installed, I've never seen the Toshiba-specific software your newer model has. I wonder why they haven't made it available to older devices that were upgraded to Windows 7? Hmm...."
- Kevin C. Tofel
Why oh why can't Toshiba find a new naming convention for their notebooks?
- Eric @ CS Techcast
"Verizon is arguably the best in terms of coverage, although I'm surprised your Sprint MiFi had problems - when there's no Sprint signal, it should roam on Verizon's network. Then again, I had to turn on data roaming with my Sprint Palm Pre to take advantage of that. There was a firmware update for the MiFi's earlier this week (http://jkontherun.com/2009......) so maybe that's the issue? Regardless, if you're thinking of ditching both devices (iPhone and MiFi), the new Verizon Droid announced today should be on the radar. There are 3G tethering apps (although you may have to root the phone) and Android 2.0 looks stunning in terms of features and UI enhancments. Plus -- not sure if this adds value to you or not -- the new free Google Maps Navigation on Android 2.0 just trumped any other nav system by leveraging real time Google Search, street view and more. My $0.02. :)"
- Kevin C. Tofel
Agreed. But 5-inch screen is too small. Make it wider like the Sony VAIO P and I'd be happier -- more screen and bigger keyboard. :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
I was surprised how usable the Sony P keyboard really is. It feels great. Pair it with a low-powered ARM processor to give it decent battery life would be interesting. A throwback something like the NEC MobilePro.
- Rodfather
Exactly! I love the P form factor, although I don't need a super high res screen. Pluck out the Atom, pop in a 1 GHz Snapdragon, Android/Chrome OS/Ubuntu and I'll buy one at $199.
- Kevin C. Tofel
That would be great at that price. Maybe one of those Sony P clones will pull it off.
- Rodfather
Ack one day I'll actually get my XB360 hooked up to the LAN. Wish there were more hours in the day. I even have 3 mos of the "Gold" as part of the HD promo.
- mikepk
Thank you all, I've added and requested you guys.
- Kol Tregaskes
ITBlogger Glad to see you bought a 360...you won't be disappointed. I sent you an invite.
- Alex Scoble
Actually I added everyone else too...so if you see a request to add ITBlogger, that would be me. Hopefully one of you has a higher gamerscore than me...I need a new goal. :)
- Alex Scoble
Amani, there was certainly a user with that username, added. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Alex, added, thank you. Yes Xbox is great, my brother and I have been playing co-op Call of Duty, shame we have to start from the beginning every time - how can the publisher/developer have omitted that feature.
- Kol Tregaskes
Alex, cool! Just got your request, and will respond as soon as I get back to the dashboard. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Agree with Nir Ben on this one. Don't get sold on a CULV laptop (more than a netbook with larger screen). Small size is easier to take with you.f
- JR Holmes
The Nokia is sooo pretty though. As is the Vaio. But 10hour battery life is pretty sweet.
- Mona Nomura
The Nokia isn't out yet and boy, its price is so disproportional (700 Euros for a netbook?).
- Nir Ben Yona
Ya - I have three browsers and Digsby running. Still no lags / problems.
- Mona Nomura
I dunno if they do it in the US, but here in the UK there are mobile operators that offer a netbook with a USB 3G dongle and contract (so you're paying for the netbook over the course of your contract). Giving you a netbook *and* a means of connecting to the net anywhere.
- alphaxion
Yaarrr... If ye can be getting a Dell Mini 9, ye can hackintosh it to run both Windows 7 and Mac OS... so ye have a choice... YAARRRRR
- Johnny Worthington
I'd go with the Asus 1005HA, Samsung NC10, or Toshiba Mini NB205
- Rodfather
Rodfather :) I'm trying to figure out which Eee PC this is. Do I have to take out the battery? #flashbacks *edit: it's a 1008HA. Super cute.
- Mona Nomura
The 1008HA is the seashell with the non-removable battery. The 1005HA is basically the same with a removable battery.
- Rodfather
It really does last a freaking long time on the battery. I have been very pleased with mine.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Am I going to need to take out the battery? Lindsay - I love it so far...it's mainly for email and browsing so I'm not even worried it's XP. Though I am very very VERY drawn to the Vaio P
- Mona Nomura
from IM
Well, the 1008HA has a 6 hour battery life vs 10.5 hrs on the 1005HA. It is sleek and pretty though. The Sony is too expensive for what you get compared to the others. They are all basically the same when it comes down to it. I'm really happy with Asus' build quality. They make rock solid netbooks.
- Rodfather
I'm using an Asus 1000H. It's 1 year 2 days old now :). I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and harddrive to 320GB the day I got it. I love it. I use it everyday and it's my main computer.
- Rodfather
That's awesome - I think I'm going back to a Windows machine, too. Getting a little sick of Macs.
- Mona Nomura
We have some Toshiba netbooks at school (not sure of the model) they run okay and the battery life is excellent.
- Bryce, Low in Sodium
Either the Eee 1000 series or a Lenovo S10. I'm partial to the S10's myself but the Eee is widely used so you're more likely to find support for it.
- EricaJoy
I have not had to take out the battery, though I admit that I haven't tried to use it for 10 straight hours either... but I think it would last that long if I tried. I have not had any issues with it so far. It's great for checking email and browsing, especially at places I don't want to take a big laptop, like coffee shops or... Gnomedex... Oh, and we upgraded the RAM on mine when we got it too...
- Her Lindsay-ness
Ya I think I might upgrade the RAM too...but so far so good. Actually, Chrome runs faster on here than on my Macbook (which has 4gigs of RAM LOL)
- Mona Nomura
I'm probably going to wait until Windows 7 is preinstalled on netbooks before grabbing another. The performance is probably better with XP, but I'm ready for Windows 7, and would rather have preinstalled drivers than worry about upgrading. Plus, I want to see if there's any good convertible tablet netbooks coming with Windows 7. Hopefully the Asus T101 will be good if it comes out.
- Rodfather
That is totally what I was waiting for too (preinstalled Win7) but man, I'm getting tired of lugging monstrous laptops around. Can't wait until Office goes online!
- Mona Nomura
Actually right now, I'm keeping my eye on the Lenovo x200 tablet. It's pricey, but still fairly small with a 12" screen. It has both an active digitizer and multitouch capacitive screen. There's an option for a bright outdoor viewable screen too.
- Rodfather
Samsung N120 -- comfortable keyboard, sturdy construction, better than average speakers... Will snatch up the Samsung N510 when it comes to market. Laptops are gone for good in my world.
- Sean McBride
Sean - Samsung...really? I've had really bad experiences with Samsung devices so I tend to stay away (especially cell phones). I dunno about tablets...still on the fence. (more to do with usability and practicality)
- Mona Nomura
I think you would be happy with any of the recommended netbooks. Cheap, light, and great battery life. It's been the best bang for the buck device I've had ever. It's provided so much value for so little money.
- Rodfather
I'm actually really digging the Eee 1008HA. Netbooks are such a steal and Chrome seriously runs faster on this.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
+1 on the Apple tablet (if it ever happens) being too expensive.
- EricaJoy
Ya - it'll just be an oversized iPhone. read: battery suck.
- Mona Nomura
Over 80 reviews of the Samsung N120 here, mostly positive: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung... Usually it's a good idea to visit a local Best Buy, Staples or whatever to physically interact with these machines, hands on, before deciding.
- Sean McBride
Visiting a local store isn't the best idea for netbooks because B&M shops are only just now catching on to netbooks. Generally they won't have a good or complete selection of whats available.
- EricaJoy
from IM
Really? I'd be surprised if Fry's didn't have a good selection of netbooks. Mona, there's a Fry's in Renton.
- Rochelle
I'm sticking with the Eee 1008HA until a netbook with Win7 preloaded comes out. I've been on it all day and I really like it - only issue is I have to use Firefox or IE to post stuff to FriendFeed / Facebook, etc. GoogleReader looks kinda funky in Chrome.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
Frys does not carry the Lenovo netbooks for sure and possibly not the samsungs either.
- EricaJoy
from IM
I don't think I'd invest in Lenovo or Samsung... :( And Rodfather? The Lenovo tablet is omg expensive.
- Mona Nomura
I still have my Eee 1000HD, so I would vouch for anything along that line. I would recommend the Acer Aspire One, but I'm not a big fan of the Atom processor.
- Helen Sventitsky
Samsung is selling a lot of netbooks: "Samsung Electronics is expected to surpass Asustek Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) to become the second largest netbook player in Europe in the third quarter of 2009, trailing only Acer, according to Taiwan-based makers." (Honest -- I'm not a paid Samsung representative. :) I'm just impressed by their netbook technology, and think that netbooks in general are going to be huge, huge, huge... Ubiquitous)
- Sean McBride
Don't worry too much about which netbook you buy today -- it will be outdated in a few months, and it will be inexpensive to replace it. This technology is going to evolve very rapidly for the foreseeable future -- there is a massive convergence from every angle on this form factor and platform.
- Sean McBride
I'm in love with the 1008HA - seriously snappy and perfect for browsing needs. Now all I need is MS Office to go online (Cloud or whatever). Can't WAIT to rid all my bulkier laptops!
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I'm not doing anything until Windows 7 comes out.

If you want Snow Leopard, Dell Mini 10v works brilliantly (using it to post this). Nice size keyboard, too. Battery life is only so-so.

- Mike Chelen
Nvidia 3D Accel or Dual Core CPU + 4gig ram + Win7 in Eee 1008HA form factor = dream Netbook. I'm looking into RAM upgrades but it sounds like a total hassle. Bummer.

LOL Mona! My "computer name" is Asus EEE Pc 1008HA - It's very nice, but it really would benefit from at least 2G mem. I'm srsly pushing it at 1G.
- Richard ¿digame? Walker
Whoa this thread turned bigger. Anyway, I run Windows 7 on my Asus N10 with 2GB of RAM and it works awesome. Asus did great when added a small shutter at the back with direct access to both hard drive and memory parts, so replacing them is just a matter of minutes.
- Nir Ben Yona
I'm planning on getting an Acer 1410 in October unless a better alternative comes along. (I won't need one till Nov.) It's because I want full-screen video without hiccups. I hear it can't do full screen Flash video smoothly until Adobe finally rolls out GPU-accelerated video. Still, for the time frame I'm looking at, and for my needs (I don't need long battery life, but do want an 11.6" screen, full-sized keyboard, 3 lb or lighter weight), I think it fits nearly perfectly.
- Andrew C
I have a Dell Mini 9 and I'm pretty content with it. There are other options for the same price with bigger HD's, but you need to know if you actually need one. If you don't, I recommend Mini9. <3
- Olivia Lovag
You have low-tier (< 300$) or High Tier (>600$) don't choose anything in the middle.
- anaborg
No, I'm with you @angry. We bought a Lenovo S10 for my daughter. While it is nice, it's nearly impossible for me to type on it. And the 10 inch screen is too small for my aging eyes.
- Herb Hernandez
from iPhone
Have you actually tried using the latest generation of netbooks? For most apps that most people use, they are adequately powered and the display is readable. It is easy to boost the font size on smartphones, not to mention netbooks (I read ebooks on my smartphone comfortably). Laptops look like clumsy dinosaurs to me now. I will never purchase or use another laptop.
- Sean McBride
Back Nir Ben's suggestion. Up the memory to 2gb though and buy an external Bluetooth mouse. The only bad thing about the 1005HA is the mouse on it.
- CW™
Wow everyone, thanks so much for all the helpful advice. I need to bookmark this thread. Y'all rule. Liliputing, huh? Never heard of it...lame. Btw Reeeechard, I def. agree. This guy (1008HA) can use another gig of RAM.

Run like hell from any Sony note/netbook. I've had 3 and mother-in-law had 1 and they ALL had hard drive failures just out of warranty. This is over a 6 year period as recent as this year.

Brad, we have an ongoing joke in Japan: "Sony Timer" - for all their products crap out RIGHT after the warranty expires.

Toshiba NB205 is a very worthy competitor to the recommended Asus 1005. I have both right now (own the Tosh, Asus is on loan) and they compete well. I like the massive trackpad on the Tosh though. :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
from iPhone
Brad, I've had the total opposite experience. I have had three Sony Vaios (upgrading, not replacing because of problems) with the first being in 2000 and the most recent was purchased less than a year ago. I've had nothing but great luck with them. In fact, I'm on one right now as it's my primary computer. Plus, it's PINK. :)
- Rochelle
I have to agree with Brad. Sony's only entry into the netbook market (which they don't want people calling a netbook at all) is the Vaio-P. It's crap. Cute on the outside, unusable on the inside.
- EricaJoy

Erica, Sony does have a netbook entry besides the Vaio P (if you can call the P a netbook), it's called the Vaio W http://bit.ly/2ddkJp
- Nir Ben Yona
my top 3 netbooks right now are (i reviewed around 150 different ones in the last 2 years) - Toshiba NB200, Samsung N150 and Eee PC 1005HA. I can really recommend all of them when you wanta good build quality, great keyboards and last but not least some 8-9 hours of batterylife.
- Sascha Pallenberg
you might also wanna wait until January when all the new Pine-Trail netbooks are available. Pretty much the same performance compared to the Intel Atom netbooks that are available right now but much more batterylife. Check out my youtube channel for my netbook reviews: http://www.youtube.com/minipcp...
- Sascha Pallenberg
those are your two words? :) And hey, yo, this actually wasn't what i was referring to as annoying. It was the other ones - like "Pain & Sorrow", "Life", "Friendfeed", "Damn". "Probably its most remarkable feature is that it helps you find iPhone apps that are on sale, something that the iPhone's App Store oddly neglects to do. "
- Kevin C. Tofel
There are several good apps for this purpose - including AppMiner, Store Extend, and Bargain Bin, which even offers push notifications when an app you're following hits a target price (or just alerts for all apps that go free).
- Patrick Jordan
Good to know for Snow Leopard users with the U727 EVDO modem on Sprint. I have the same modem on Verizon and it just works natively with OS X 10.6.
- Kevin C. Tofel
That's a very nice space gain. Wonder how the various VM apps fare on this new version.
- Patrick Jordan
Actually, after taking a closer look, the space gain I had is overstated. The two versions of OS X apparently report the free space differently. http://t.oy.ly/kgmk I only gained about 6GB of storage.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Well, that's far from huge but still better than a kick in the teeth :)
- Patrick Jordan
I'm still not sure if it will be approved simply because you can directly search and play songs/albums from the interface, unlike Pandora and other streaming radio services.
- Rodfather
Good point. Unlike other services, it's not just a random streaming approach. Hmmm....

Give me a reason to use Evernote? As a FF addict who love to share stuff and participate in online discussions and generally into social media what benefit would Evernote be to me?
I tried it a few weeks ago and haven't looked back - great for capturing little snippets throughout your day like articles, websites, and other things you come across but have to look at later
- Johnny
I use Evernote to add threads on FF that I want to read later (I don't know if I want to 'like' them yet or it may be a long time before I can get around to really reading it and I want to find it easily later) or to bookmark interesting lessons and tutorials or things for wedding planning or to take snapshots of things. Like when I see a lost pet sign in my neighbourhood, I take a picture on my phone and put it in Evernote and then if I see random animals walking around I can check.
- joey
I'd like to now that too - where can you share?
- phil baumann
Yeah, you can share through email and with friendfeeds email system that should be pretty easy. Also, all your notes sync with your desktop, web, and iphone.
- Johnny
joey - i haven't used Evernote since trying it a while ago: how would you share on FF? Or is it just for repositing?
- phil baumann
Phil: You could email your note to share@friendfeed
- Johnny
Johnny - ah, I should think more often. :)
- phil baumann
I actually haven't shared yet but I'll have to try it.
- joey
Phil - Ha, no worries. I wish they would incorporate a few more sharing options.

@Kol - just realized my response didn't really answer your question. How EN would benefit you. I have 3 folders: @work, @home and @reference. In @work, I keep notes, code samples, screen shots, emails, etc. In the @home folder I keep a journal, random voice notes, pics, lists and whatnot. Thanks Lindsey, I'll have a look at the public notebook, sounds like it could be useful.
- Kol Tregaskes
I use Evernote when I want to track more than just a basic text clipping or article, since it also captures images, and website info. For basic text, quotes, etc. I just use the "Clippings" add-in to Firefox because it has lower memory overhead while still allowing me to organize them reasonably well. Another key advantage to Evernote is that you can access it when you're not in a browser. With "Clippings" I can't paste a clip directly into a local editor like Notepad or Wordpad.
- Mark Jepsen
What's also very handy is the Tabbloid service from HP. It creates a nicely formatted PDF from a RSS feed. That PDF will be delivered to an email address you provide. So it could be posts from your own blog that get sent to your Evernote inbox for archiving purposes. Give it a try at www.tabbloid.com.
- Peter van Teeseling
Relevant to Phil Baumann above: I just discovered that you can make an evernote notebook public and it gets and RSS feed. You can then easily put this feed into friendfeed. Not sure how long that feature's been around, I just noticed it today. It's tough for me to use, though, because I don't want all of my evernote stuff going public, and it would be easy to accidentally use the wrong notebook...at leas the way evernote behaves now.
- Steve Koch
I had a look this morning and couldn't see how to make a notebook public, any ideas how I can change that?
- Kol Tregaskes
Hopefully they'll be a Chrome plugin soon. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
right-click on the notebook and select "properties." On my version, there's a "sharing and collaborations" text link at the bottom of the window just above the OK button.
- Steve Koch
Making a notebook public (Mac): right click on the notebook you want to publish and select settings. There should be a link to sharing properties. That will direct you to the website where you can control sharing settings. This should be in on of the next releases of the desktop clients.
- Peter van Teeseling
Got it, ta, that wasn't there before when I created the notebook. I have this empty note I cannot delete now. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
try to delete it on the web. Had the same kind of issue sometime ago.
- Peter van Teeseling
I save everything to evernote. Notes, ideas, small documents. its always a pain saving things between my phone and laptop and desktop. With evernote I can put it there and its searchable so don't even really need to organize. BB app could be better but it gets the job done.

from fftogo
Is there an alternative to evernote that lets you add text snippets and provides real time search (as you start typing, the snippets that have the text in them appear as search results), I guess evernote is too clunky or messy for me, I thought connectedtext wiki would be better, but looking at the number of buttons in the toolbar it instantly put me off.
- TrafficBug
Does Evernote allow me to export everything and save to multiple disks (spliced may be)?
- TrafficBug
Steve - thanks for the tip...I'll check it out.
- phil baumann
Darn, keep forgetting to try this, all in place, just need to start sharing to it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, one key thing to become an Evernote addict is to be continually using it at least one week. Suddenly it'll become second nature to select an interesting article and press Win+A (if one's on Windows). Beats having hundreds of HTML files and their associated support files in a folder.

Ah, but the normal stream on a PC won't demonstrate the adaptive bitrate streaming. That's reason enough for you to get an iPhone / iPod Touch, no? ;)

Was Devils Tower once an explosive volcano? Famous for its appearance in films such as Close Encounters, the origin of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA is still debated, with a leading hypothesis holding that it is a hardened lava plume that probably never reached the surface to become a volcano. The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense volcanic neck has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High above, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy arches across the sky. Many notable sky objects are visible, including dark strands of the Pipe Nebula and the reddish Lagoon Nebula to the tower's right. Green grass and trees line the moonlit foreground, while clouds appear near the horizon to the tower's left. Unlike many other international landmarks, mountaineers are permitted to climb Devils Tower.

"The "eye" at the center of the galaxy is caused by a monstrous black hole, which can't be seen but is surrounded by a ring of stars and rampant star birth. In a new color-coded infrared view from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the area around the invisible black hole is blue and the ring of stars, white." - Ken Morley

The extended battery I ordered should work with the Touchstone, but it only provides around around 15% more juice as it's the same physical size as the original battery.

I guess it should. I opened mine and thought for some reason there were contacts on the battery for use with the touchstone back plate.

I wonder if Palm Centro batteries work fine. It seems a bit much for the Pre replacement or extended battery at the moment.
- Rodfather
Supposedly the Centro batteries do, but I don't think I'd chance it. When it comes to power, I generally stick with supported parts. Had a device totally short and burn out once.
