This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- Kevin Pedraja
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
My like is the last one so far :) - 509 afaik
- getalifejerk
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)

Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.

It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...

OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)

totally got a cool idea for new schwag... two items: for new Moms, a friend feed shirt with slots for easy feeding of infants... and for new Pops like Louis, nipple with bottle attachment inserts with one nipple coming out of the first f and the second nipple coming out of the second d... saweet!
- Rob Reed
FF schwag and twins! best picture of the day!
- Sarah Perez
Mega awesome ;) Congratulations to you and your family, like the Friendfeed t-shirt ;)
- Mario Olckers
Tiny... little... eentsy... lumps of yum. There, my estrogen has officially shown itself.
- Carla Thompson
No way - they have FF onesies??? How do I get my hands on one of those?
- Jesse Stay
The Gray family Babies!!!! Sarah and Mathew look sooo cute in your arms! and sooo tiny my goodness!!... still LOL @ Rob's wacky comment..whoa!
- Susan Beebe
I should I explain though that I set the exposure for her and pre-focused it in the ballpark by focusing on her before handing it over, but she was messing with the focus ring and out of the four frames she shot these three came out clear. That's better than my ratio with this camera (I suck at focusing consistently).
- Adrian
Twitter is working hard to push updates from M-W now, so that issues don't extend to the weekend. I would expect this resolved quickly.
- Louis Gray
Funny how I used FF as my second go to Social Media Communication/Network. If Twitter is broke I come here to find out why. Then I say to myself, maybe I should give FF a second chance at #1 spot. Then Twitter gets fixed and I forget all about that thought. :)
- Lon Cohen
@jezlyn Hey! I met Kevin Tofel at GigaOM's Mobilize conference. And my 1st big launch went well. I got quoted in Macworld :) - http://twitter.com/SeanBox...
"When the discussion turned to “X-Men,” Stewart, who had a cameo as a younger Professor Charles Xavier in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” said that from what he had heard, audiences have probably not seen the last of the professor. He mentioned he recently co-starred in a production of “Waiting for Godot” with Ian McKellen and the two agreed that they would like continue exploring the relationship between Xavier and McKellen’s “X-Men” character Magneto. As for that other franchise, Stewart thought that this summer’s reboot of “Star Trek” was “terrific,” but didn’t see a future for Jean-Luc Picard in the franchise, leaving open only the possibility that he would agree to do a cameo in a sequel. Stewart mentioned a proposed final “Next Generation” film, but after the disappointing box office for “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it never materialized. “I feel that I have left behind a legacy as Picard,” he said. “In my head and heart, I’ve moved on.”"

Wasn't that just a reset of the a thread on the cartoon and in the comics, where Xavier is disembeing'd by someone (maybe phoenix?) and then his "soul mate" in Irland, Moyra something is able to pull him back together in some mutant island of misfit toys?
- Matthew DeVries
If I just dreamed that up, dibs on the story!

It wasn't the coffee, but the smiley face. They always put one on the cup when I say: "I want a triple-decaf non-fat, hazelnut latte... at 130 degrees. ... and draw a smiley face on the cup, please". lol
- Paul J Manoogian
Check out this beautiful 360 Aerial Panorama of New York. You need to have QuickTime to view it, but if you want the best quality use the plug-in on the site. It’s amazing with the plug-in loaded! http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr...
The viewer appears to be Flash not Quicktime,
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, they changed it since this was first posted back in May. It used to require a VR plug-in which worked with QuickTime, but now it doesn't require anything, However, it looks just as good as before. The images are truly amazing!
- Michael Fidler
Michael - didn't notice the post date-- "Doesn't require anything" -- Flash must be installed so something is required. The Flash viewer seems to crash a lot though (or at least in Chrome) -- still a great pano. I wonder how it was done -- from a helicopter no doubt but beyond it would be a mystery.
- Brian Sullivan
I just tried it in Chrome and recommend Firefox instead. It didn't crash on me in Chrome, but it didn't run smoothly either.
- Michael Fidler
Brian, I would love to know how these are made. I know some are done from a helicopter, but if you check out the one from Downtown, it's clearly stationary. I can't even see the reflection of the camera in the building windows when it's turned around 180 degrees. I've posted links to others above. I wonder if I should repost this to a room and if so which one?
- Michael Fidler
I know generally how to make these 360 panos but the only technique I know is shooting from a tripod where you have control of the leveling of the camera and control of the angle of shooting. You have to manipulate out the tripod out of the picture after shooting -- these I have no idea, http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028... is a QTVR one of my living room
- Brian Sullivan
All the fisheye does is cut down on the number of shots you need to take -- if it goes 180 in both directions two shots are nominally sufficient on a full frame camera - usually 3 though but that is only if all are shot with the same horizon and with precise angular placement. How you control this in a moving helicopter is beyond me. Maybe more than one camera ? In shots like these where parallax is less of a problem maybe that is the method used
- Brian Sullivan
I only said it helps. There's all kinds of other equipment one can use for stabilisation and alignment, including using software after the fact to fix focal points and map the rest of the image around it.
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
This must be shot completely differently than a stationary panoramic. I'm familiar with the 8 shot method, but the camera needs to be on a tripod as Brian mentioned. If you watch these images load slowly, they look like plates. It sort of reminds me of photosynth, but connected somehow. Now, I really want to find out how it's done.
- Michael Fidler
I think regular stationary panoramas are loaded as "plates" (at least you export them that way to edit them) as well so I am not sure that is a clue as to how they were generated.
- Brian Sullivan
If I email them, do you think they'll answer? Hi, I was just curious; what’s your secret? You never know. It might be worth a try:)
- Michael Fidler
That one is done from a tripod or monopod of some type it appears -- you can see if you look down the footprint has the logo on it.
- Brian Sullivan
Ya, I noticed one that had the logo above it. May they use it when photoshop doesn't do the job perfectly.
- Michael Fidler
Logos like that are used to hide the footprint of the tripod or other -- sometimes it can be a lot of work create a shot to cover the spot (or to fill it in using a bitmap editor) so it is just masked.
- Brian Sullivan
OK, check out this one http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr... and go into planet view. It's the P next to the directional controls. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Shot off a reflective globe maybe.
- Michael Fidler
The "P" gets you the "polar view" -- a standard view that can be created from any 360/180 panorama so that is not a clue as to how it is done either from what I can determine (http://www.flickr.com/groups... is a flickr group dedicated to such polar views)
- Brian Sullivan
I've seen them many times before and wondered how they were made, too. This guy has some examples and apparently he uses a 10.5mm lens and then maps them into shape: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Michael Fidler
Yes the 10.5 is a Nikon fisheye lens -- I use a Peleng 8mm fully manual fisheye -- more suited to my budget. When shooting with tripod you need a parallax correction jig as well -- I use the Nodal Ninja -- which is a reasonable quality low end device.
- Brian Sullivan
I was on the Hugin site a few months ago and I found a video that demonstrates how to use the jig. It didn't mention helicopter shots though. In fact, the video was very particular about not having any movement. I think it's time to ask them.
- Michael Fidler
Yeah I have seen a number of these panoramas that seem to defy logic. Peter Murphy (who is a pioneer in this type of stuff) has a number of puzzling ones - http://www.mediavr.com/manlyai... (needs Quick time) for example. His weblog has tons of others as well _http://www.mediavr.com/blog/
- Brian Sullivan
@briansullivan I went to an event last night where I came across something that might explain how these are done. If you check out the picture I shot of the equipment; it uses a reflective dome to capture the entire shot all at once and then processes it almost instantly afterwards. http://bit.ly/qD0dn . It basically comes out looking like a globe or a planet before it is processed. Once processed it look like a full panoramic just like the ones here, but in lower resolution.
- Michael Fidler
I haven’t seen the digital version yet, but the guy who owns this company told me they would be much sharper than the prints which they give out at the event. I also asked him about the helicopter shots, and he wasn’t sure about compensating for movement, but he didn’t see it as a big problem either. Mystery solved?
- Michael Fidler
I don't see this lens/device as "the" answer. Other similar devices have a reputation for low optical quality and low resolution. Peter Murphy almost certainly does not use such a lens. No serious panorama photographer that I have heard of uses anything like this.
- Brian Sullivan
I guess the search for an answer continues...
- Michael Fidler

Thank you, I'm glad you found this. I love your work. Based on the number of likes and comments for this post, I think it’s safe to say, I’m not the only one. It would be nice if you could enlighten us with some details about how these are made.

I do like FF and use it almost every day. Wouldn't it be great if FB either left it alone so we can continue to use it as "professionals," or somehow incorporate it into a more "mature" version of FB that didn't have all the annoying, time-wasting apps, games, etc. I'd much prefer a totally customizable FF "wall."

Why should I? Whats in it for me? You doing some sort of survey of people to send out the police to do a "Safety Check" on when the site is shutdown?

here. anecdote: a friend of mine just signed up for FF this evening. apparently the FriendFeed hype of the last 24 hours pushed him over the top. leaves me wondering whether FF has actually gained users today?it would be a crafty way of marketing the service. I'll wake up tomorrow to discover that there was a problem with the paperwork and the FriendFeed team have had a change of heart.

I recommend FF to some of my clients, and there are some companies and nonprofits with presences here—not like Twitter, but I'll be curious how that will be affected when FB takes over more. Most have FB fan pages, groups and/or causes, too.

Yeah, me too. I just saw the request to have a comment link at the bottom of the comments from one of your friends just yesterday and here it is. I'd say they are listening. Thanks FF.

Yup, I have blocked all the impersonators now. You will still see them, but I don't see them and they no longer can comment on any of my items.
- Robert Scoble
@scobleizer As far as I can see you have blocked not only the impersonators (who renamed themselves back the moment they found out you have a problem with this) but most of the folks who chatted there.
- Махатма Бугоганди
@meatreach yes, see next thread. Scobble becomes anti-Russian.

Why you, Robert Scoble, don't block users from Spain or Italy? China or arabic countries? Those users that comments on non-English languages?
- Never Impersonate You
@Robert, in fact they do speak English. But they also do make fun of Friendfeed and everything that's going on there. You can block them or take part in this fun. ;)
- Махатма Бугоганди
I prefer FF over twitter and facebook, but all my friends are on twitter and/or facebook. Maybe facebook will get it right this time now that it has acquired FF. If they simplify it a bit more without removing functionality. Then I would spend a bit more time on FB. Lets hope all goes well with the merger. If not I'm jumping ship and going over to Google Wave. oh wait, I'm going to go with Google Wave regardless! ;-)

@robert yes they (we will) stay here, I think tat the migration process will take time and after reading @Paul Bucheit, I think that what we all are trying to get even if we don't say it explicitly is to preserve a kind of intimacy (beeing a part of the Huge faceBook community) don't mean that FF community will preserve their intimacy, why should a community be a plan one, (let imagine a community as a set of sub-community) that all.
- abdellah
Wow!! So many likes and comments; is it a record Rob?
- Er-fun
@scobleizer thank you, for understanding. be cool, guys we just want have fun here a little. Take care.

@Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? I'm kind of surprised - you create a community that large around yourself, yet when you see a new and unusual activity you just block it right away.
- Махатма Бугоганди
@Robert, patience? Who's talking about patience? It's about curiosity, not patience. When something strange and unusual happens around you, you can either try to stop it or try to see what it can develop into. You choose to stop - and it stopped. Well, not stopped - just moved to some other place. And do you really know what it was and what it was about to bring you?
- Махатма Бугоганди
I'm here all the way from South Africa! I dig this service and I'm not quite ready to give it up. Regardless of the news about the acquisition, this remains an awesome service.

I think I have to qualify my earlier answer. I don't have many friends on Friendfeed, but I do use it as a news aggregator. With groups and rooms, I used it like Techmeme. Facebook, where i have a more healthy friend list is less interesting. In fact, I spend more time there locking things down, than sharing, which I did pretty freely on FF, even if only 10 people cared.
- Peter
Hope this deal preserves FF's power and usability. FF:FB::Mac:Windows.

It might also be a way for me to filter down my "following" count (diff (my followers, scoble)) are the only people I really need to follow. Those that scoble follows, I can safely unfollow and use Scoble as my social media filter :)
- Shivanand Velmurugan
pardon the arrogance but it really sucks this great forum of sharing will turn into a myspace humdrum. Now I have to find another SM where first adopters and well informed techies won't haft to compete with general "noise"

I just mention the 1500 mark since it was such an iconic query to see... that and the 500 Likes club of FF posts. It's pretty exclusive stuff... but it's also sobering to note that the subject matter required to get to these levels isn't always a uniform mix of cares/concerns.

New here, but learning. Tips for best use?
- Barbara Langham
@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself. Despite potential "finishing" impression of some productive consolidations in this collective-collaborative cognition space, the emergent #cognosphere is still WAY too nascent to assert anything other than initial impressions. March to the beat of your own drum; build your own...

methinks they dost protest too much... this is a bit equivocal. It feels more and more like they will pursue a dual track, perhaps Symbian remains OS for value & feature devices (S60) and youknowwho perhaps moves up to all smartphones across the portfolio. All conjecture, of course... ; >

"When we buy our DSLRs, chances are that we mostly shoot and grow with using just the kit lens provided for us by the manufacturerers. What some of us DSLR users don’t realize until we’ve grown enough is just how wondrous and useful a good 50mm lens with a wide aperture is"
- Mel Buckpitt
from Bookmarklet
What about a 35mm? I just bought the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 and I've been told that lens as well as the 50mm are the top two "must have" lenses for DSLR
- Johnny
Johnny: You make a good point. The main advantages of a 50mm is its almost the FOV as the human eye on a full frame camera. The 35mm FOV is closer to the human eye on a cropped sensor camera.
- Mel Buckpitt
Mel: So it would make more sense to go with a 35mm on a DX and a 50mm on a full-frame
- Johnny
Would there be any benefit to buying a 50mm for cropped sensor camera?
- Johnny
I think so, the 50mm lens tends to suffer less from distortion than the wider angle lenses. They are great fast lenses and also cheap, although the Nikon pictured in the article is not. I use both but keep the 50mm on the camera because I feel comfortable with it. I shoot with a D300
- Mel Buckpitt
The 50mm on a DX is amazing for portraits.
- Johnny Chadda
Johnny, I don't have a full-frame camera and I still adore my 50mm.
- joey
What does the wide aperture part mean again? Educating myself on FF.
- Steve C
Johnny, I'd almost say that a 30 or 35mm is more useful than a 50mm. Sometimes that 50mm is a little too long, unless you're using it on a full frame body. That said, I love my nifty 50, primarily because they can still be had quite cheaply.
- cecily
Steve, the wider the aperture, the smaller the number. The smaller the number, the greater the depth of field. Here's a short DOF tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- cecily
Actually the bigger the number the greater the depth of field, the smaller the number the more light gets in. Also the shorter the lens the greater the depth of field at the same F Stop.
- Jeffrey Stephen
Cecily: I agree but get too close with 35mm and most will distort, particularly faces. Everything is a compromise I guess
- Mel Buckpitt
The only problem with a 50mm lens (a regular one that is) is it really isn't a true 50mm lens on a digital camera. I would go a little bit wider if possible. I did buy a 50mm myself, but would like something closer to human vision, as it were. However, I love the clarity that comes with fewer pieces of glass in the lens, so I still would recommend it. Not to mention, considering how much lenses cost, a 50mm is one of the very cheapest that you can buy, they easily pay for themselves in the end...
- Danielle Closs
Here's my biggest issue with Facebook buying FriendFeed: I use the two services very differently. I only add people I know IRL as Facebook friends, but I follow a larger variety of people on FF. If FF gets sucked into Facebook, that's going to be hard to reconcile.
+1 Matt on "it just happens". Of course, this is all speculation. Maybe FF will remain a seperate entity. I just doubt it, since Facebook tends to consume the services they acquire.
- Jason Huebel

Same here, Jason; and +1 for Matthew's comment, too

I was thinking the same thing, just trying to say possitive as you said, lol. Also, there are plenty of good reasons why "it just happens", but I figured it didn't need to be explained.
- Matthew Horton

George Costanza said it best, "Worlds are colliding!" I'm already trying to wean down my FB friends to actual folks I know, went to school with, etc.... In FF, I'll add anyone that has something interesting to say or share. How to manage this going forward, I have no idea. Even worse: my Palm Pre syncs with my Facebook friends. I don't want it to pull in all of my FF contacts since I'll likely never call them.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I started added people on FB that I didn't know IRL after FB improved the privacy settings. Now I can group and choose what people see. Works pretty well, but takes a little time to setup.
- Kenley Neufeld
from iPhone
@Kevin, I'm trying to avoid words like "worse" and the like. Like Kenley says, there are flexible privacy settings on FB. And considering the good engineering choices the FF guys have made so far, hopefully they'll continue to influence FF positively as it is integrated into FB.

Me too. There's no one on Facebook I haven't known for over a decade. I keep it very simple and clean, and don't share much at all there because I hate (no, that's not too strong a term) Facebook's model. Plus, FB's UI is not geared to handling hundreds of people effectively.
- LogEx
Yeah, I'm even worse off...I've done a lot of work to subscribe to quality people here, whereas on Facebook I subscribe to anyone who's a gamer, so it's very high noise to signal. Going to be very difficult to reconcile.
- Alex Scoble
I agree that FB isn't geared toward managing a mass audience. Frankly, I find FB's interface cumbersome. It's why I enjoy FF so much. It's simple, gets the job done and gets out of your way. Hopefully it will stay that way.

It's too early to tell how Facebook/Friendfeed integration will work. Wouldn't worry about it now.
- Alex Knight
Jason, what I did was created a "FriendFeeders" list, and unchecked the "show in my home feed" when adding a FriendFeed friend on Facebook. That's about the simplest way to import your FF friends at the moment so that they don't mix & mingle with your "real life" friends.
- Nathan Chase
What about the cap FB has on subscriptions though? There are bloggers I'd like to follow so I can see updates, but won't be able to because they're maxed out. Guess I just have to keep an eye on Twitter and Google Reader more?
- Matthew Horton

Exactly! Facebook is a very personal boring service that I keep to close friends. Friendfeed is my worldwide community of interesting people
- Keith - @tsudo
Well put Jason. Only similar functionality on FB is FB Groups, but those are so SLOW moving compared to FF, more "under the boot" of the moderator, and of course are missing all of the discovery elements like Likes/Cmts pushing items back up, aggregation into notification lists (Friend Lists), asf. Well, let's pray that the good stuff from FF gets transferred over into FB Groups.
- Alex Schleber
Facebook wants to be FF - no more "privacy" -- get rid of that misconception now. Zuckerberg will rip that layer off of Facebook. FB will be open like FF, just watch - that's gotta be on the roadmap. Walled Gardens are so 1999. Everyone copy FF and move on.
- Susan Beebe
you can filter and group your friends on facebook so all your random internet dudes and dudettes can't see shiat on your facebook profile
- Logan Lindquist
although this does take some e-elbow grease it can be worth it. :D
- Logan Lindquist
Susan, so they're going to make all the high school accounts public? FF has private accounts too.
- Cristo
I think facebook would be stupid to remove all privacy controls. it's clearly a feature for some subset of its users. I know people who use facebook who won't bother with other sites because they are too open (twitter, etc)

My wife's already running one via telnet with multi-line teleconference and a few games, including a totally hex-hax0r'd MajorMUD. Yes, my wife is a true hacker chick. telnet://forgottenages.no-ip.org:2300

Don't make me get my TRS-80 out of storage! I upgraded that mofo to 64k RAM and replaced the cassette drive with a 5 1/4 floppy. *oozes real time*

Thanks! Yeah, this was a fun photo shoot. I got to fool around with new equipment and a patient, wonderful friend. And a bottle of wine.

Was Devils Tower once an explosive volcano? Famous for its appearance in films such as Close Encounters, the origin of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA is still debated, with a leading hypothesis holding that it is a hardened lava plume that probably never reached the surface to become a volcano. The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense volcanic neck has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High above, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy arches across the sky. Many notable sky objects are visible, including dark strands of the Pipe Nebula and the reddish Lagoon Nebula to the tower's right. Green grass and trees line the moonlit foreground, while clouds appear near the horizon to the tower's left. Unlike many other international landmarks, mountaineers are permitted to climb Devils Tower.

The Milky Way is one thing those of us who live in light pollution areas rarely see.
- Spidra Webster
Aside from Devil's Tower, this shot reminds me of the one time in my life that I could see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Was doing a 50-mile backpacking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and was simply wowed by the scene.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I love the countryside & mountains in California/Nevada/Oregon, and one reason is that the Milky Way is so *bright* away from all the light pollution.
