Good, but still too many deletes for my taste. This is the reason why I unjoined DMU and have not responded to your invite yet: I see to many deletes for completely illogical reasons by photographers who can't make a good shot if they tried. Meh ...

Haha, yeH dmu can be a bit critical most of the time. A good albiet harsh and crass group of photographers

I don't mind criticism, at all, but quite a lot of what I see is nothing but misplaced arrogance, or envy, or just being randomly contra, and not constructive at all.

Not sure how many - but my guess would be that this guy is a competitive gymnast (based on the body and the setting) - things like this often come easy (when you have trained for a dozen years to develop muscle, balance and body awareness),
- Brian Sullivan
I can't get enough of this. Of course it should carry the "don't try this at home disclaimer". I'm sure they could run a whole episode of Amerca's Funniest Home Videos of people trying to do this.

"More than any utility on the planet, Germany’s Yello Strom has embraced the intertwining of energy and home broadband connections. The company manages its smart meter service directly via its customers’ broadband connection; it’s the first European utility to offer its customers access to Google’s energy management tool PowerMeter; and it tells us this week that it has developed a prototype application that will enable its smart meters to tweet its customers’ energy consumption."

"No, not that MP3. The Piaggio MP3 500 Scooter ($9,000) features a unique three-wheel design, providing a more stable, secure, and easier ride. Features include a 493cc engine, a maximum speed of 89mph, 55-57 mpg gas mileage, a lean angle of 40 degrees, 20% less braking distance than traditional two-wheeled scooters, and aggressive looks that will help you stand out from the Vespa crowd."

Having two wheels in front is an old design for a motor scooter. My dad had one in the early 40s made by Cushman. I'll keep my 1979 Vespa that I got when I was 20, thank you very much. :)

@tiffany BIG difference between this and a Mac. This is badass and it's not white.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
No, a Mac scooter would be about $18,000 and would cost you another 3,000 a month, but you would only get the breaks on the third update (two years later). "Who needs breaks. You have a Mac scooter", said Steve Jobs.
- Wizetux
I'd rather have a two-wheeled Piaggio, but these actually look much cooler in person than they do in photos.
- Cecily
@Alex: could be; I'm not familiar with the different scooters out there and how much they cost. But surely the extra wheel and associated engineering justifies the extra cost?

Not when you can get a 600CC motorcycle for that much and you won't look like such a dweeb.
- Alex Scoble
@Alex: Awww... I don't think it looks dweeby! I don't trust myself on a motorcycle (I drive aggressively already), so a scooter like this would be a decent substitute that perhaps wouldn't get me in too much trouble. :) Then again I have no experience with motorcycles or scooters, so I may be talking out my butt. :P
- Cheryl Jones
via BuddyFeed
If you don't trust yourself on a motorcycle, you shouldn't trust yourself on a scooter. They're both capable of doing fast speeds - I think this one, with a 500cc engine, probably has a top speed of 90mph. The only difference is you don't have to shift a scooter.
- Cecily
I saw one of these this weekend at the beach, with a female rider. I loved the look of it. Great idea, it opens up possibilities for a lot of people. Unfortunately the couple was very snobby and ignored my questions, so thanks for sharing Derrick!
- jcunwired
I've been seeing these all over the place recently.
- John O'Day
@Cecily: doh... 90 mph top speed? Yeah, that's more than I thought it could do. But I guess I'd feel a bit safer on a three-wheeler. :) In truth, I'd be careful on either motorcycle or scooter. I just liked the idea of something like a Vespa for in-town commuting, but this one looked cool to me as well.

[Loren's Brain Scan]: This was taken on the 25th. You can see Loren's "small lemon sized" tumor in the frontal lobe as well as the edema (swelling). He said he doesn't have a headache but just feels pressure. The steroids are helping reduce the swelling.

Rob - Doctors are taking the approach that this is related to the colon cancer. My conjecture: It is a slow growing cancer - and so this was going on for awhile. Regardless, he has excellent care. I am so proud to be called Mrs Worthington, We have been dealing with some bad stuff lately and Johnny as been such a rock for me. I can now see our future will be so wonderful, full of love and life.
This is our new little girl foster kitten. No name yet, but she is super adorable. She was found in a lot and is very scared and skiddish. Everything makes her jump and she is rather afraid of people. But the magic of head rubs wears away all reservations and I already have gotten a huge purr! She will be a lap cat before long. We will only have her for about 9 days as she is already large enough for her operation and if we can get her liking people they want to get her adopted at soon as possible.

Cutie pie!!! Don't know if you've tried this before, but rubbing something scented on all the critters in your home (I use rose water) helps them realize they're in the same pack. I would dab a bit on me and a bit on my cats to help everyone get acclimated.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
yay! There are tons of kittens now at most shelters if you are interested. So cute!
- Anna Lynn M.
Good tip! Thanks Tina. Might be really useful with this one. She has been separated from her brothers and sisters as they are all hissing and spitting at people and she was just cowering and hiding so they thought she would adapt quicker separated from the pack. So now she feels very alone. She has that blue bear which she sometimes hides behind which is currently her pack. Petting is working well so far but every little thing that helps is good.
- Rachel Lea Fox
If she's adopted the blue bear into her pack, put the scent on her and the bear first so she'll get used to it. Then start putting a bit on you or whichever human interacts with her the most. Then add in the other animals and people.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Anna, thanks. The shelter I foster with has had less kittens this year than usual, but it seems to be picking up (good for me, bad in general) so I'm hoping I will get more pretty soon after giving this girl back. If there is another lull, I might look into other shelters, but in the past the ones in my area have wanted me to foster cats in general, and I can only do kittens. My older cats won't accept adult cats.
- Rachel Lea Fox
I really have to stop looking at pictures of kittens or I am going to cave and get one before my daughter is completely toilet trained (I promised one as her reward).
- Martha
Martha, are you in northern ca? if so, let me know when your daughter is potty trained and maybe I can recommend a kitten or two. :)

Animals are so lucky for people like you.
- Patricia
Thanks Patricia. I'm so lucky to have all these wonderful sweetie animals in my life. they make me smile. Kevin and I both get so much out of having them!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Patricia, that is AWESOME!!! My older cat will only let me take kittens, she feels threatened by most all adult cats. But she loves the kittens, and I do too so I don't ever get them older than about 3 months. I haven't had many this year, I'm feeling a bit kitten starved. So this little girl will get tons of affection!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Unfortunately, we are in the northeast, but maybe you have suggestions for fostering in this area?
- Martha
Martha, my sister has looked into foster dogs in the Rochester area, but she will likely know about the cats some too. She has done some volunteering, but not fostering yet. Other than that area I wouldn't know much.

Aww, looks like my kitty, only about 14 years younger.

vivek, we foster for the Palo Alto Animal Services who services Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View. - Eric Florenzano
Henry, you will want to. The current builds are Alpha and there are many things missing like flash support. There isn't enough there right now for it to be used full time.
- Mathew™
Yep, because most of the content on the web uses flash, so there is no point. That is why I am waiting.
- TheHenry
I still don't get what it gives me over Safari 4/Nightly Webkit. What does "sandboxed" give me?
- Jesse Stay
I've been living without Flash for quite some time now, guess it depends on what sites you visit. Not sure what process separation really gets you when you're running an unstable piece of software, but that's what Chrome has that no one else does.
- Victor Ganata
From what I understand Sandboxing makes the browser more secure. This http://blog.chromium.org/2008... explains how it works on the Windows platform and they're replicating the same model on OS X.
- jr ignacio
Mathew, based on that, I get the feel that Safari is the better choice. Being around longer, even with sandboxing the length of time seems like Safari will be a bit more secure. Regarding speed, it seems like Safari still somewhat out-performs Chrome. I'm not sure what the big deal is about Chrome for Mac - Google hype?
- Jesse Stay
The other thing I don't see in that comparison are developer tools available. Webkit has amazing developer tools built in
- Jesse Stay
There is no big deal about Chrome for Mac yet really (other then it is coming). But, Chrome has been better then anything else in Windows. It is basically a wait and see game. But, to be honest there are things that a Chrome will most likely do (little things) that Firefox does that Safari doesn't that keeps me from using Safari and that in the end is what will make Chrome overall better then Safari for me. And the way Chrome handles process is a plus as well.
- Mathew™
I too like the way Chrome handle processes. Given that my Mac only has 2GB of RAM running Safari all day really kills my Mac's efficiency.
- Vinko
I generally liked the experience of Chrome on Windows which is why I'm looking forward to the Mac version. The other thing with Chrome is that when a tab/window hangs, it doesn't crash the whole browser. I haven't seen any other browser that can do that well on OS X.
- jr ignacio
Yeah, for me Safari eats as much RAM as Firefox. And that is with 5+ tabs open in Firefox and all those plugins and a couple tabs in Safari and no plugins.
- Mathew™
Mathew is that with Safari 4? Nightly Webkit build?
- Jesse Stay
So why are you all still using Mac if you don't need Safari? You know Chrome works on Linux too.
- Jesse Stay
I'm not a developer and all the apps I need are Mac/Win only. :)
- Mona Nomura
Um...because OS X is a far better OS then any other that I have used. I never choose OS X because of Safari. I chose it because it is faster, more stable and the programs I use run better in OS X.
- Mathew™
There are a couple of things that I like about Mac. Safari isn't one of them. Both Apple and Microsoft should stop developing browsers. The community can develop them. Open source and cross platform.
- Rutger Blom
via email
Rutger I don't get what people don't like about Safari. It's the fastest browser out there right now, has terrific developer options, great interface, and most of all, it's webkit.
- Jesse Stay
Chrome is webkit, too. And frankly, much faster than Safari 4 and nightly build.
- Mona Nomura
Mona, that's what I wanted to know. Thanks.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: I do like Safari but I tend to agree that one does not buy a mac for Safari. You get Safari on windows too. Chrome on Mac feels fast but its also incomplete
- Kiran Patchigolla
Np, Jesse :) Anyone else having problems un-starring? Also, on a Windows machine I would not use Safari. Nor would I Hackintosh or dual boot.
- Mona Nomura
Speed isn't the most important thing about a browser for me. Here is one big reason why I don't like Safari. When I close a browser I want the tabs that I had open, open again when I reopen the browser. And a bonus reason. All the plugins that I have with Firefox. Plugins are also the same reason why I didn't use Chrome full time when I was Windows only.
- Mathew™
Mathew, what Rob said - I use a plugin for that.
- Jesse Stay
Chrome on the Mac feels faster than Safari 4 beta, but it's definitely not as stable, although it's crashing far less than it did. I heard Safari was going to move to separate processes, too, at some point.
- Victor Ganata
I tried out that plugin. But, it still wasn't worth me switching from Firefox to Safari.
- Mathew™
Still hasn't crashed. Victor - that's what nightly build is :)
- Mona Nomura
Jesse, no one's trying to convince you to give up Safari. This is a preliminary Alpha release, a first chance to play with Google's browser. If you don't want to do that, no one's forcing you to. We're all trying to LEARN what the differences are.
- Glen Campbell
Chromium has never crashed on me (I'm sure it will next time I use it though) it just doesn't have that Flash support I want.
- Mathew™
Glen, I'm not asking anyone to convince me. I simply wanted to know what the differences were, and why the hype, in regards to the Mac itself. (I understand why on Windows)
- Jesse Stay
Chris it took awhile, but you completely converted me to Safari from Firefox. It's going to take a lot to convince me to switch elsewhere. I'm excited to see if Chrome has the capability to do that, but yes, it seems too early to decide.
- Jesse Stay
I am all about speed - and Chrome gives me *just* that.
- Mona Nomura
The way I see it. If you don't care about Plugins then Safari is fantastic.
- Mathew™
I mean, it's a huge improvement. It's only crashing about once a day for me right now. It used to crash about once an hour.
- Victor Ganata
We like Chrome. Works fine for us. Better than Firefox 3 when it first came out. :-)
- Discount Bloggers
testing Chrome on OSX but this version is very incomplete (not really usable as main browser yet). love Chrome on XP and will be switching to Chrome on Mac when code is complete.

Should I switch to this vs? Firefox? Are their all the nice extensions?

Joseph - Chrome is still in the early early phases (for Mac) with no extensions. Heck, we can't even set preferences. But it is BLAZING.
- Mona Nomura
via IM
I do! i'm just sayin' - The Chrome ain't so hot on the Mac
- Jeff Douglass
Different strokes for different folks, it works better than the other browsers for me. Again, I am all about speed.
- Mona Nomura
I'm waiting for at least beta too--I have far too many Firefox plugins to give up.
- Kelly W.
I was running it for a little while, but I couldn't install the FF bookmarklet, and can't view videos yet, so I had to shut it down for now. But I'm glad the initial version is available, and I'm sure I'll use it from time to time.
- Cheryl Jones
Just heard a new browser coming out, "Rust"...
- orionstarr
Mac browser run down: FIREFOX + Features and customization - memory footprint SAFARI + fast, lightweight - lack of plug ins CHROME + blazin' fast - total lack of features, mediocre stability. I have all three browsers on my computer, but almost always use safari. It doesn't crash on me, get bogged down much, and its straightforward. I would use firefox if only it weren't such a resource sucking PIG. And Chrome would (will?) top them all once it becomes stable and extensible (?).
- Zach Landes
I tried on GNU/Linux and it didn't let me login to Google or Yahoo. Quick to load websites and works quickly enough, but I'd like to at least be able to check email with it! :/
- Rudolf Olah
Ryo, my link was correct. That is Google Chrome for Linux.Very early release, of course, but it is Google Chrome.
- Diego Barros
yes, it crashes when I load an attachment in gmail. Also it doesn't keep state of my selection ofthe drop down list . I am using it now.
- Dh'ennis Dömingö
Never satisfied with my browser, I switch constantly between Firefox, Safari, Fluid, often having at least 2 open at a time: FF for general work (because of extensions), a Fluid instance for Friendfeed, Gmail... or other sites I leave open on desktop always. Hoping Chrome can find a useful role in this mess.
- Brad Kligerman
Arguing which tool is best based solely on user preference is akin to arguing why a size 10 shoe is better than a size 11. It's user determined, so there's not going to be a "right" answer. What I don't see is what features Chrome for Mac offers that differentiate it from Safari nightlies. At their core, both browsers are built on the same "platform" - Webkit. To draw a different analogy... one is a Buick and one is a Chevy. Now... somebody tell me what feature(s) DIFFERENTIATE the two.
- Kevin Donahue
A Buick and a Chevy is like Opera and IE. Clunky, out of date, inefficient, and out of style. Chrome's JS rendering beats nightly hands-down. Multi-processing tabs ≠ platforms. :)
- Mona Nomura
via IM
So... without the car commentary (thanks, btw)... Chrome for Mac has better JS handling. I remember seeing that early in the month, w/ V8 clocking 9% faster than Nitro, but I didn't see that quantified in time. For example, if a page load is 4 seconds, how much faster is the Chrome JS... 0.38 seconds faster? How long does it take me to blink? 0.5 seconds? Regardless, I appreciate the point. The dev release handles JS faster than the nightlies. Are there any differences? Start up time, etc?
- Kevin Donahue
Does anyone have any experience with MiFi? The good, the bad, the ugly? Sprint vs Verizon? (speed and coverage in the SF Bay Area) Price without a contract? (I don't want to sign another 2 year agreement and/or move my phone service from T-Mobile)
I wish there was a pricing structure that matched my usage pattern: I won't use it at all for days or weeks, then use it a lot for a day. Maybe a low monthly maintenance fee + you can buy unlimited traffic in 24-hour increments.
- Tudor Bosman
I think Verizon has a plan where you pay $270 for the device and can purchase 24hr access for $15. Whatever plan you're on, you don't have to move your number... you can just get a stand-alone device on it's own plan. I've seen more than one iPhone+MiFi user mention they've been in situations where they have MiFi connectivity via Verizon when they didn't have iPhone connectivity via AT&T.
- Ken Sheppardson
$15 is quite expensive; if you use the card for 4 days every month, you end up paying the same as their highest plan ($60/month). "$15/day capped at $60/month" would be acceptable, though.
- Tudor Bosman
By "capped" you mean once you've used it 4 days in a month you get the rest of the month "free"? Yeah, that'd be a nice way to do it. I think if I had to make up a plan it'd probably be a free device + metered access, i.e. a flat rate per MB.
- Ken Sheppardson
The problem with "flat rate per MB" is that there is an overhead of collecting micropayments from users with low usage, and this inflates the rate. "Free device" also means that the device is subsidized by metered payments, which pushes the rate even higher.
- Tudor Bosman
I guess one big advantage of the $15/day plan is you're not tied to a contract. You might pay more than $60 one month, but you might still come out ahead over 24 months @ $40 or $60/mo.
- Ken Sheppardson
Overage charges are evil. If you have multiple plan levels, overuse should automatically be capped at the next highest plan, maybe with a small convenience fee. Example, using Verizon's real plans: $30/month gives you 250MB, with $.10/MB for extra usage. At this rate, 5GB would cost $505, but you can switch to the higher plan and get it for $60. So how about you cap it at, say, $75 or so? You'll still make money (presumably, the $60 for 5GB plan is profitable, too) but you won't anger the hell out of me.
- Tudor Bosman
But then there'd be no reason for anyone to get a $60/mo plan, Tudor.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken: yes, people who regularly use a few GB per month would still save $15. Adjust the "convenience fee" upwards until it makes more sense; I just think that $445 is just a little excessive.
- Tudor Bosman
Oh... wait... capping it at $75... sorry... skimmed right by that... :-/ Selling MB in chunks might be a neat way to go. You just pre-pay for block of data, and the rate is lower the more you buy up front.
- Ken Sheppardson
I have the Verizon Mifi and it's amazing - even worked in the NYC subway and the DC metro. If Skype gets push notifications you could drop AT&T and go iTouch.
- Steve Rubel
Interesting: the Verizon MiFi price is $270 without contract, or $100 with a 2-year contract. So, buying a 2-year contract saves you $160. The early termination fee is $175, and goes down by $5 every month -- so if you plan to keep the device for longer than 3 months, it makes sense to get a 2-year contract.
- Tudor Bosman
(This might change in a few months when you'll be able to buy used MiFi devices on eBay)

According to the reviews it is the best camera I can fit into my pocket. It consistently beats the Canons, which ruled that market for a long time. I've had higher end (compared to contemporaries), but it does enough with it's 12x zoom, Leica lens, HD Video and, most importantly, fits in my pocket.
- RAPatton
Wow...that is cool...25-300mm equivalent lense? That's very nice.

Very cool! I've heard lots of great things about the Lumix cameras with the mega-zoom. I think it was the TZ1 I almost bought. Decided to go with the LX3 for the fast lens even though the zoom is weak. Love it. But I would consider getting a mega-zoom Lumix as a supplement to the LX3.

Panasonic puts out some great compact cameras right now, they have really driven the market pushing the other manufacturers to keep up. The feature-sets have evened out somewhat but I think you'll be quite happy with the camera. I've owned 2 earlier Panasonic cameras, happy with both but now shoot DSLR almost exclusively.

I still need a pocket at this point, but I might go DSLR next time. It all depends on the kids and our lives. I really thought hard about the new Olympus Micro Four Thirds that will be available in July (as andrew points out). I needed a camera now was part of the reason I went this way, and my rule of thumb is to let tech settle a bit, so by the time Olympus refreshes once or twice I'll be ready.

The Architects’ Journal selects the most important buildings from a galaxy far, far away Star-Wars creator and amateur architect George Lucas has been accused of rather too closely following the designs of media magnate William Randolph Hearst’s ‘Xanadu’ Castle. He should have looked closer to home for inspiration: his Star Wars films are full of wonderful architecture. Here the Architects’ Journal selects its top ten Star Wars buildings.

first pic: Senate Building, Coruscant - More than two kilometres wide, this seat of power looms over its subjects. Sited at the end of the Avenue of Core Founders, it holds the Grand Convocation Chamber, a vast auditorium that contains 1024 floating repulsorpods, one for each senator (extensive refurbishment followed a duel between Chancellor Palpatine and Jedi Grand Master Yoda). Noted similarities with Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi.
