Yes to both currently. - Paul W. Swansen
Of course its both... as Shel says: "New Media don't kill Old Media." Does this mean Twitter is now 'old media' - David Phillips
Agree. Twitter for a-synchronous talk, Friendfeed for more extended discussion. For me that is:) - Martijn Verver via twhirl
I've been preaching that for awhile now... Use twitter as a broadcast and FF for the conversation. It's a relationship that works. - Vince DeGeorge
absolutely agree, but I am wondering whether they are going to be the "defacto" standards. - Rob Diana
I hope it will be only Friendfeed soon. Doesn't anybody else get tired of all these different kind of networks? Sometimes monopoly is a good thing. Let's all head over to MSN ;-) - Rutger Blom via twhirl
mine is a little more extreme - friendfeed mostly & twitter rarely - i do push my ff's to twitter & i check my twitter replies & dm sometimes - i would like to get to the point where all my friends are in friendfeed and i no longer need to go to twitter at all - i used to like whales ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
Agree. They are different and both ueful in different ways. I see no need to choose between them just yet. I'm using Plurk too, which is different again - very informal conversation. - jjprojects
Disagree. Reason? Time. I don't have time for multiple services. For me, right now at least, it's FF. - Steve Rubel
Jury is still way, way out. - Warner Crocker
tiwtter is short and sweet.... ff is for discussions... i think they both have a niche - c010depunkk via twhirl
Disagree. You needn't use one to use the other. And, like Steve, I'm serviced-out. - Chris Baskind
agreed - Mona N
You don't need one to use the other but they sure are handy to use together - JohnBfromMemphis via twhirl
Haven't maid up my mind yet, but it seems that the different services and their approaches fill different needs. Undecided for now! - tekspectator
Exactly! Why does it have to be "either" "or"? - Steve
I definitely agree. It is frustrating to have people insist one is better than the other. Two totally different beasts. - Shawn Farner via twhirl
could not agree more. probably the best twitter, FF comment in a long time. - Bastian
Agree! At this point, FF's comment functionality isn't good enough to replace Twitter for me. With Twhirl, it doesn't seem like tool overload to use both. - jen robinson via twhirl
Apart from twitter's SMS interface.. what is missing (for you) in FF? @ ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
Its FF only. reaons against Twitter : (a) Twitter whaling to often (b) not easy to track/thread twitter replies together. FOR FF (1) FF stable (2) FF Conov enabler/agggreagator (3) I like it better :)- - Peter Dawson
An integrated solution with both would be best. Twittering out of FriendFeed - that's my dream! - Matthias Schwenk
Oh definitely agree. They are symbiotic beasts - Deepak
Agree absolutely, when social media tools complement, the sum become greater than the parts - Charlie Hope via twhirl
@ Matthias you can comment back from FF in Twitter already... - Charlie Hope via twhirl
and, and, and... there's Utterz, Flickr, blog, etc. etc. etc. -- so, yes. It all goes together. FriendFeed has a chance to become a hub (the way Twitter is foe me now, but more so), if it can somehow tame itself - Doug Haslam via twhirl
Funny how this comes to my attention now as Twitter is not updating for me, but FF is. I love how I can reply to FF via @Twhirl. That is a dynamic combintion. - Tracy Lee Carroll via twhirl
@Matthias I wonder if someone has created a tool that takes your own FF posts and makes a tweet from it? You'd need to turn off tweets in FF otherwise there would be a feedback loop that would eventually destroy the universe. - Elliot Tucker
elliot: twitterfeed does that, put in your ff atom feed and remove your twitter feed from ff - mike "glemak" dunn
Agree....finally somebody comes out and says it as it should be said :) - Arjun
it's both right now - if you have group of people in Twitter then it is both - otherwise the conversation is moving more into friendfeed on a greater range of topics so for those not so tied to twitter it is twitter or friendfeed - riaz
Disagree. Twitter has crossed the line. It is dead to me and too much of the time it is dead to everyone. - Dave Slusher
I kind of agree. There's too much noise on FriendFeed to have simple, conversational, exchanges. - Bill Bittner
thanks mike - Elliot Tucker
If Twitter doesn't get its act together, it will be FriendFeed and no Twitter. I'm revisiting FriendFeed today after a nice hiatus - Michael Koby via Alert Thingy
Completely agree. - Parth Awasthi via twhirl
This is be being real: I love Twitter, and don't get me wrong, I think FriendFeed is cool, too.. but I think Facebook will ultimately adopt the killer features of both and wipe them out. - Shawn Farner via twhirl
'&&' ! '||' - Andy C
Elliot, you can try feeding your FF entries feed into Twitterfeed.com. - Dewald Pretorius
And probably many other services we'll adopt - Sally Robinson
Agreed. FF, to me, is more of a reading rather than authoring experience - Michael Lehman

Yep, I use both. - Brent Newhall
Agree! - Sarah Perez
Agree; tell me though, does Pownce = Twitter + FriendFeed [or vice-versa] or am I just being thick? Twhirl posts to Pownce for me as well, but taking Rafe Needleman's advice and not tracking multiple communities. FF good for posts too long for Twitter - Justin Guy Souter via twhirl

well I would have to agree as I do use both.. it seems obvious they are different things. - Karl via twhirl
Both - but grudgingly. Honestly? The only reason I go to FF is because some of my Twitterpals migrated here and won't come back. Twitter is my main gal - FF is my Friday night stand-in. If I could do away with FF I would. - Lucretia Pruitt
Twitter is too myopic to last much longer. Our online lives are a lot more complicated than 140 characters. - David Weiner
How much time to we all have?? There are use cases for both twitter and friend feed. Some people WILL choose one or the other. There are functional aspects that i like about both. For me it is both. - Rodney Rumford
Its neither - it's what fits your structure and how you want to connect. If you want actual conversations and build on relationpships, IMO, Plurk is good at that. FF seems too cluttered but aggregates a lot information together. Twitter is still good for me and is a great broadcast tool, some communication, and a lot of industry heads that you can learn from. - Sonny Gill
What the heck, throw in Plurk and you got a deal. - Rick Wolff
It's becoming less and less so. I'd much rather have one service I can do it all on and FriendFeed satisfies that much better. Twitter still has things FF doesn't though so for what FF doesn't satisfy, I will continue to use Twitter for. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
Totally agree. - karen2
I suppose I could go with the AND if FF offered a pure stream like twitter. I really don't like the threaded conversation presentation ... but maybe that's because I mostly use twirl? - Clint
Agree *completely*! - Kasey Sistrunk Anderson
You're almost right. I get what you're getting at. But the two are different and will grow separate paths with some common features. - phil baumann
phil, if they do grow in separate paths, that's great! I'll continue using both! However, I will not continue to use both for the same reasons. I'm removing the duplicate effort lately and consolodating what I can over to FriendFeed, leaving the remaining effort to Twitter. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
My other concern is that Twitter just doesn't have the expertise up high to make it a successful service. You will see the FF founders frequently engaged in conversations about FF on their service. I have yet to see a single Twitter founder engage in any of the critiques or compliments about their service on Twitter. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
FF ideal for social discovery as long as folks hooking up enough of their services. I like the "noise" of FF. - Stephen Francoeur
...and Plurk, and Facebook, and Pownce, and Jaiku, and more to come. Twitter for its simplicity and all the add-on apps and all the others for conversations or smaller groups with specific interests. - Brenda Young

I'm not sure what "free time" is, but I try to balance business & being online with creative writing, composing music, sound design & video projects, photowalks, creative arts, cultural events, reading *gasp* books, travel, being with family and friends, pets, good food, gardening, hiking, outdoor activities. I spend very little time on TV, mostly PBS or a few genuinely informative programs. My life has become so much richer and fuller since I made a real, committed, ongoing effort to keep it balanced. :-) - Cathryn Hrudicka
I generally read, cook, take photos, pet the cat, nap, hike, internet (a new verb!), go to museums, hang out with friends, eat cheese. - lisa-k
Reading (both online through Google Reader and Friendfeed and offline), photography, a little TV, games (video (on the Wii) and board), trying restaurants, baking/cooking/making ice cream. This week has more free time than normal, and I hope to hit some museums and do some genealogical research as well. - Andy Tinkham
Baking! How could I forget to add baking in as a free time activity? - Michelle Jones
kids, photo/walking, music (not playing), internet... but free time iis darn scarce - silpol
Watch TV, read when I can, go out to dinner and movies with friends whenever possible with crazy schedules. I volunteer at too many things, but I don't consider that "free time" cuz they're obligations, too (however pleasurable). I also travel to see distant friends when I can. Chicago in 2 weeks! Can't wait. - Louise Alcorn
When I'm not spending time outdoors with Planet Wifey, then I usually get down doing BMX freestyle with rest of the 30-35yo cats I know, photography, read Comics, play video games, and see just about every movie that remotely looks interesting (and all of that before midnight) -- after midnight is my creative time for writing, drawing, podcasting, etc. - Do You KNOW Clarence?

Cyndy: Railo (a CFML-compatible engine) is being integrated into JBoss, BlueDragon (another CFML-compatible engine) has just been GPL'd, and Adobe is rolling Hibernate into CF9 while continuing their push to keep CF and Flex as tightly integrated as possible. I enjoy live streaming...when my connection allows me to watch it...but shedules being what they are these days I don't watch half as much as I would like to..so then I usually resort to watching recordings(if there is one) at a later time. I guess that really isn't an answer so I will say the way of "get it when you want it" is probably the way to go these days. - Bryan Jones
I watch a few Shows Live when i get the chance, its going back to the old media way, but with all the great content of new media. i personally, think that LIVE adds a certain excitement, that you can't get from pre-recorded stuff. it also, gives producers certain freedoms where things dont have to be perfect. - Absalon Isaac Prieto
We do our WorkFastTV show (about how the Internet is changing work) live because then we can have audience participation. Last week we had 70 people watching and participating and it was really great. - Robert Scoble
Our debate centers around two things. First, our media is all music or podcasts, etc. So we'd be compiling it to stream. However, there's a chance some shows might be done live but, the way we work makes that difficult to schedule. I used to do live shows and the participation was awesome. We're more curious if this is a good idea to do..fill a stream with archived media and do live once in awhile or...just stick to the format? - Candace Holly
I like to watch a live stream and participate if possible. Generally I'll go back if it had great contnet. More often than not I'm not available for the live feed and I'll watch it later and read the comments if available. - Janet Fouts
It's a mix. Live will never completely die, because there will always be times we want to kick back and listen/ watch as opposed to seek. As Scoble notes, live streaming also allows for audience participation as well, not huge numbers, but as a content creator that participation can add to the final product. I know in podcasts previously when there has 40 ppl listening in that we've had audience questions, read some of the comments out, that sort of thing. - Duncan Riley
I agree that the audience participation is a great benefit of live streaming, however, living across the world (Thailand) from most of this content usually prevents me from enjoying that benefit. As long as content is available for download (preferably by RSS) then I am all for the live streaming. - Dan Evans
There are times when you will want to stream and then probably also release as a podcast. You are serving 2 different audiences. Additionally, you will want to put one touch media players on yoru site to serve those people who view directly from your site. So the answer is YES. - Douglas E. Welch via twhirl
@Douglas currently on the site we have a player where you can click to play all the podcasts. It's just a regular flash plug in though. If we went live with some things, the live show would be archived into a podcast as well..of course some of the live aspects are cut for a podcast audience. You are right, it's two different audiences you work with when doing that. - Candace Holly
If only I could stream. My DSL is only 1.5 mbps. That's what I get for living in the beauty of nature. When I go to download an HD movie it says "will be ready to view in 12 hours"! (It usually takes 4). My upload doesn't even handle Slingbox! Takes the spontaneity out of it! It would be nice to just cruise and say, "Yeah, I want to watch that now." Maybe when it reaches the boonies... - Barb Gonzalez
It seems in the television medium the DVR has already proven that people want to view content on their own schedule. I think there are a small group of the "always connected" that like the idea of "Join me now I'm streaming live on Qik", but I personally would prefer to wait an hour or two and watch a better quality, well produced video. - Kevin Shannon
I don't care in the slightest that something is live, unless it's a sporting event. And I don't care about sporting events. - sarahlefton
There is a balance. - l0ckergn0me
I think you can always have the best of both worlds. Tweet when it's live, tweet when it's polished. Either way you're getting the content out.. and your audience knows what standards of professionalism to apply for both. It's the technology that hasn't yet caught up to this yet. You can't stream from a minidv yet, and no one wants to watch video from an n95 edited together. - daniel morgan
@l0ckergn0me ; You would be the best person to expand a bit on that balance. You broadcast live practically all the time but I've seen where you release recorded content. I'd wonder how well it works for you and which you get more traffic/listeners from etc. - Candace Holly
My friend Chris Bachmann said it best today: He's a time shifter. No time for live shows, subscribe on his ipod - Aaron Brazell
@Aaron - I sort of subscribe to that school of thought. I don't have the time or ability for a live show. If I want a show/podcast it goes on my iPod and I listen to it whenever. - Candace Holly
I think Live Streaming is appropriate for things that involve interaction with the users in real time, like Leo Laporte in his Daily Live Stream. (twitlive.tv, 11-4pm PST all days cept Mon and Fri.) where he anwsers real time questions. While things like Cali Lewis's Geek Brief (geekbrief.tv) delivers information without interacting in real time with users. Both are very entertaining, and they use the medium that suits the type of prodcast better - Chacha
yeah live is overrated but can be useful as stated by Chacha i'd even go so far as to say I prefer studio over live in music too - Cecil Sandus
@Chacha - The only issue I have with twitlive.tv is that it doesn't always feel like the chat interaction is really utilized. The interaction usually happens in-between shows. Plus he has two or three seperate chat rooms. The stickam chat, the IRC chat, and the TechGuy IRC. The interactive nature is split and that seems to hamper things. When Leo is talking to the chat audience I can never tell which room he is chatting with. I wish Leo would do listener call-ins like in episodes 1~50 of twit. - Rob Shepard
I really like live streamed shows, it shows a bit more of the presenter(s) prsonality, I also like live shows for some of the bloopers that can occure and personally I love hearing them reading a message from me more when it's live for some reason. - Jaithas
i wouldn't recommend filling a live stream with pre-recorded content all the time, i think that live content is a pleasant suprise for the viewer.it does add a layer of interactivity that fans love. The prerecorded material can still be served via the traditional method (podcast or flash player) that gives everyone the chance to check out the material even if they didn't get a chance to catch it live. - Absalon Isaac Prieto

Cities Near Beijing Close Factories to Improve Air for Olympics - NYTimes.com

"BEIJING — With Beijing struggling to clear polluted skies before the Olympics in August, the nearby industrial port of Tianjin has ordered 40 factories to suspend some operations for two months as part of a broader effort to improve air quality during the Games, state news media reported." - Robert Seidman via Bookmarklet
Ah, the benefits of a one-party police state. I like this gem, too: "The city will begin alternate-day driving restrictions on July 20 to ease traffic and reduce pollution." Immediately removes half the cars from the streets! - Mark Trapp
Good link. James Fallows from The Atlantic also has good commentary from Beijing leading up to the games. http://jamesfallows.theatlanti.... - Larry Huffman

I hear you can grow plants in the air - Ross Mayfield
won't have any effect, I was there 2 months ago, wasn't as bad as Shanghai or Shenzhen, but enough I'm happy I wasn't running anywhere. Foolish to think they could contain it in less then 1 year, they only started emission testing of autos 6+ months ago. Removing 1/2 the cars will probably make the driving worse, instead of non-moving traffic, it will now be weaving driving. - clarke thomas
Dang. where are we going to get our dirt-cheap gotta-have-it goods? - Cyndy
@clarke who knows. i was in beijing and shanghai last month and beijing was way nastier -- although both made LA seem pleasant by comparison. i've even heard shanghai has gotten less polluted in the last few years. - Eric Eldon
Its the pollution that gives them such beautiful sunsets. - Chris McLean
