No problem Benjamin, you and Paul opened up a lot of possibilities

APIs are powerful things; FriendFeed (and RSSmeme) both have them and I want more people to understand that it isn't complicated to use them.
- Benjamin Golub
good read though I closed my blog......via feedalizr
- bvs
A lot of folks including myself are intimidated when they hear "API"
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I never thought the RSS mechanism would work differently with the API. Ignorance I guess. I have some experience working with Twitter and Jaiku APIs and I don't think they did this. I could be wrong.
- Bwana ☠
I just wish there was a general solution to allow everyone to use this great plug-in. I tried having a go to get it to work on my Tumblr blog but it wasn't having any :¬( Good solid HTML widget to add to my CSS is what's needed ;¬D

Pat Hawks already had a proof of concept for Blogger, I thought?
- l0ckergn0me
I'm working on a php script that merges Friendfeed likes and comments with Disqus comments. Still in early stages, but let me know if anyone would like to take a look (twitter klecu or comment on my blog http://klecu.com/article...)
- Kevin L
When I blogged this (May 28), no Blogger solution existed.
- Bwana ☠
I just went through the process of adding friendfeed to my own site (holgr.com) last week and also found your site. It's a good starting point! Unfortunately the "default" options are pretty scarce and not really flexible. Fortunately - however - the API is so simple that you can create a nice embed yourself using the documentation.

Kirk, I found it here on the Getty's website. http://www.getty.edu/art... I recently went down and shot the Getty. It is an amazing museum with a fantastic "photography allowed" policy. Admission to the Getty is also free which I think is just beautiful. Here's a few of my Getty images from my shoot there: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Thomas Hawk
One of my favorite things to see at the Getty was a painting done by the famous photographer Walker Evans. Although Evans is very well known for his photography, I'd never been aware that he painted as well. Here's a photo of one of his paintings. http://www.flickr.com/photos...

Thanks, Thomas. I'll ask them, see if they know the citation (looks like it's from an autobiography). In the age of teh internets, mis-cited and incorrect quotations drive me nuts. I don't think you're getting it wrong, but I wanted to copy the quote myself...
- Kirk Kittell
@Thomas - Just curious if you are collecting release forms for each of these portraits? I'm really enjoying following this project...
- Justin Korn
Justin, I'm not getting release forms. I don't plan on using these portraits in any commercial way that I might need one for. It's more a personal project than something I'd hope to turn into something somehow commercial. Fine art photographs though don't preclude me from publishing without a release form. If there ever was any money at all from this project I'd donate 100% of it back to some sort of homeless advocacy agency.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas - fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to explain.
- Justin Korn
This is a wonderful project, keep up the great work.

When I mention my troubles with reading to friends and acquaintances--literary types, most of them--many say they're having similar experiences. The more they use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing.

...I used to fave a bunch of my contacts stuff as well as random stuff I came across, but never "in bulk". Ever since I joined FF, I am faving a T O N of stuff just about every day.

this every time, but if you have, say, 5 Google Reader shared items glommed together, comment on one or two of them. This will push them up to the top of the stream and show a comment, besides.
- Thomas Hawk
This is an interesting article. I've been playing with Friendfeed, but haven't been able to figure out how to make the best use of it. This helps.

Are you depressed by the prospect of dying? Well, if you can hang on another 15 years, your life expectancy will keep rising every year faster than you're aging. And then, before the century is even half over, you can be around for the Singularity, that revolutionary transition when humans and/or machines start evolving into immortal beings with ever-improving software.

Maki I presume the scripts that hide comments will hide the comments on your browser. As social media industry member I cannot imagine you recommending to someone to hide from yourself the criticism of what other people are saying about you, your brand, our your company! I believe that we all need to manage our reputation by knowing what people are saying about us. If we pretend that we live in a vacuum we will lose. We all need to be transparent about our activities!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Igor Chill out dude. What script are you actually talking about? And of course it's all local since you're the one installing the greasemonkey scripts (duh).
- Maki
I made reference to some scripts on the link you provided! Nothing to Chill. I just made attention to comment blocking script!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Maki I know you would not use a script like that, because you are transparent! But some people may, so I pointed out the problems.

Couldn't agree more, I had Alert thingy installed at work for 1 week, and while it was great fun seeing the traffic fly by, I think I'd better shut it off if I need to get anything done :)
- lisa.ong
I manage to wait until after work most days. Sheesh. Now, I'm just up until 2am every night... I suppose that's what hobbies are for, though. AlertThingy certainly doesn't help... I've stopped using it for now. Hopefully, after some time at FF Anonymous meetings, I'll be able to achieve a better balance and use all of my fun toys again. ;-)

"I think the best analogy I can come up with (and its a bit of a dramatic one, so take it with a grain of salt) is trying to do all your work in a Starbucks filled with friends, colleagues, and all of their friends and colleagues. And everyone is yelling, and there are no headphones available. And every now and then, someone yells something that you feel the need to respond to. So you do. By yelling." My favorite part of the post and why my dreams follow form: Subject in black followed by gray comments.
- Lisa L. Seifert
Damn. I forgot to do that last one in all caps. You know... 'cuz I'm yelling. :-)

I had some friends in 1999-2000 who tried e-mail, then bailed for 6-12 months because they couldn't handle the disruption/addiction. I can't wait for the entire world to be as interesting as possible... Imagine 1 million FriendFeeds (instead of lots of boring news)... if we could each find channels/communities/etc... which interested us easily among the 6 billion people in the world. Right now, we're handling the noise by simply not being able to hear 99.9999% of the people. The future... :-)
- Mitchell Tsai
I learn so much from following people on both services that it is a bit of an oxymoron to call it a disruption to work.

work? who has time to work any more?
- Darren Rowse
I go back to how Louis Gray termed it: FF requires Continuous Parallel Attention. It's not easy to balance but, when you can manage, it's really good. On the other hand, this makes me wish there was at least some way of privately ear-marking items on FF so I can come back later and give them more attention when I have more time to give.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Yes! I think that every day, Akiva... I've started visiting sites, bookmarking, back to FF, site, bookmark, FF and the loop continues. So much to read & learn...
- Lisa L. Seifert
Avoid disruption, sure. Be selective in what you follow, now that I am REALLY struggling with. Too many good things happening out there.
- Mark Aitken
from Alert Thingy
@Akiva I've been pushing for an item bookmarking method since I first started using FF - but hey we've got rooms now
- Steven Hodson
FF has the potential to be really distracting (and interesting). Now I have disciplined myself to use it only at scheduled times during the day on my calendar or it becomes a big time thief. Discipline, discipline, discipline!

Bwana: i'm a DSLR newb also, mine's en route, can't wait to use it.

Aviv once again makes a great point. I got ideas flying through my head now

Will Rooms get much "type-in traffic"? (ie. visiting http://friendfeed.com/rooms... directly in hopes of finding a room on a particular subject)
- Aviv
lolcatz, awesome. I'm joining that one. I just got Starbucks. Looks like either I'll be king of the coffee empire on FriendFeed or I'll sell it to them for one billion dollars.... waaaaa haaaaa haaaaaa.

I wonder how much Nick Denton is going to need to pay me to get the Gawker and Gizmodo room names back? waaaaa haaaaa haaaaa, this is fun. Somebody already beat me out to Valleywag though.
- Thomas Hawk
Funny how FriendFeed is supposed to be aggregated data and now we're splitting it all back up. Crazy. The longer this goes on, the less I like this idea. No offense to the devs, they do good work.

I just got EVERY NFL team except the dolphins.

Do you think this fragment conversations even further? Now comments on a blog post can be found on the blog itself, ff and a room within friendfeed? or am i missing the point... I was just starting to get my head wrapped around how to use ff effectively and then they go and change it on me :) EDIT: oh there's no 3rd party feeds!... i did miss the point.
