"Research and polling showed that many voters were against gay marriage but afraid that saying so would make them seem "discriminatory" or "not cool," said Flint, so proponents hoped to show them they were not alone." That is very disrespectful. I would never post such a thing of any former or sitting president. It is your right and duty to disagree but does this help anyone? - tsudohnimh
When your approval rating as president is 30% or less, then you don't have much respect to lose, frankly. There are a lot of people out there that think that Bush has ruined their life and possibly their future. Better to hit pinatas than try to take it out on the real thing. - Lindsay Donaghe
Respect has nothing to do with approval ratings. I will strongly disagree with some of President Obama's policy but I will always respect him as President of the United States. - tsudohnimh
We'll have to disagree on that respect/approval ratings correlation. Respect is something you earn, not something that should be granted to you because you end up in a position of authority. The number of things that Bush has done to earn my respect is far outweighed by the things he has done to earn my disdain. I will not be sorry in the least to see him leave office and give Obama a chance to earn the respect for that office back. - Lindsay Donaghe
he's all full of treats. - John LeMasney
+2008 Lindsay. I've always said you have to earn respect, that it's not given to you just because you managed not to die after a certain amount of decades or just because you knew the right people. - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
Political leaders (including American presidents) have to earn respect -- it's not a matter of automatic divine privilege. More than a few political leaders are contemptible. In the estimation of many professional historians, Bush is the worst and most incompetent president of all time. He had no business being in the White House. - Sean McBride
treats, I say. - John LeMasney
Of course people must earn respect but we should also be mindful of the position. I just don't get the hate in American politics. - tsudohnimh
@tsudohnimh: does being an (ex-)president elevate one beyond having a sense of humor? - Alex
@tsudohnimh I can't resist to note that Bush&team (as disaster for US and world) had been elected/hired exactly on support wave of *respectful brainless lemmings* -- it took 8 years to learn that readiness for unconditional respect is just another name for political masochism for nation (for clues - check up with with fucked economy and wars along the world) - silpol
This is still disrespectful of the office. Can you people hear yourselves? - Mike L
@Mike Why exactly do offices deserve inherent respect? I mean, I know it serves the interests of authority for us to believe such a thing, but why do you believe it? King's thrones were due respect...the president is not a king, he is a civil servant. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Mike: what does it have to do with the office? - Alex
I tend to agree that it is counter productive to hate on Bush. And it does seems a little hateful to promote an effigy of Bush which will be beaten to a pulp. But *very* little as this is appears to mostly be just a joke. We're taking it too seriously (also dangerous). - Michael Leggett
The Shrub didn't earn his position. He stole the election in 2000 with the connivance of the supreme court. Read your history. Albert Gore won nearly 600,000 MORE VOTES nationwide than GWB. He has defiled and demeaned the office of the presidency. He doesn't deserve an iota of respect. Even McCain distanced himself from GWB and his harmful policies. - Siddharth Deb
And I think it is wise for the country to come together to support all new elected officials. I can see how this (the bush pinata) might feel a little like kicking conservatives while they are down -- instead of encouraging / inviting them get behind Obama after strongly opposing him for the last year or so. - Michael Leggett
I heard that Japanese companies sometimes have rubber figures of bosses specifically for other personnel to hit to vent off anger. - 9000
There is a long tradition in this country of poking fun at our leaders. We are all human, even the big wigs. The office demands respect but the individual earns it. We should be thanking Bush. His leadership lead directly to Obama. - Phil Boiarski
"Of course people must earn respect but we should also be mindful of the position." Yes, agreed on being mindful of their position -- because the more power they have, the more we should scrutinize them (because power can be abused). - Philipp Lenssen
"Offices" and "position" do not deserve respect. These are abstractions of governmental functions, and serve a practical purpose. Those who believe offices deserve respect want a king, not a president. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
The American Founding Fathers held the culture of "offices" and "positions," which they associated with monarchies and theocracies, in contempt. Most of the "conservatives" on Friendfeed have no knowledge whatever of what the American Founding Fathers actually thought and wrote. For instance, Thomas Jefferson: "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest." Shocking. Most of these "conservatives" are religious fundamentalists who have a strong affinity with authoritarian and totalitarian cultures. - Sean McBride

I don't want to sound Pollyana... but why not cover the hires with the same fervor? FACEBOOK HIRES 15 IN WEEK (for example) - Louis Gray
Exactly. This is my point on putting it on Tip'd http://tipd.com/Tech/layoff-tr... Can't we talk about companies cutting costs and maybe growing? How about ways to help and build biz? There are always opportunities. - Tris Hussey
Yet more proof - TechCrunch is F'd Company 2.0 - Rex Hammock
To be fair ebay has been gearing up for a layoff for a while now. - todd
Why does TechCrunch do stuff like that? I found TechCrunch mid year when they were tracking Yahoo employees -- where they were before Yahoo and where they were going after Yahoo. @Carlos, I know people laid off from eBay. - Louis Gray
There are still companies hiring in the Silicon Valley. - Kevin Scott
i'm hiring. only 1 person, but it's still a net positive! :) - Jeremy Toeman
I remember not too long ago when the first big drawdown in Internet companies happened. A particular magazine reported each layoff; each closure - with glee - until said magazine's employees themselves got fired and said magazine closed down. Be careful about gleefully reporting someone else's demise - you could be next. - ScottBourne
@Louis my comment was not in reference to it not happening. it was in reference to ebay being clumped into the whole startup/layoff issue to sensationalize the article. i think that you and i would agree that ebay: #1 is not a startup and #2 the layoffs were not a shocking turn of events that were caused as a result of a lack of vc funding. it is no secret that the business has been suffering for a long time and its infrastructure is in turmoil as we speak. - Carlos Ayala

Yes, Disco is the root of all things that are evil...which is why it's banned from our wedding. - Alex Scoble CISSP
This isn't the worst I've seen...does no one remember the economic situation post 9/11? - Alex Scoble CISSP
Alex: this is far worse than post 9/11. That was a temporary shock to the system. The fears I'm hearing are that this will be long and deep. The dominoes that make up the economy haven't stopped falling yet. On 9/11 it was very fast and came back pretty nicely pretty quickly. We don't yet know how deep or long this one will be, but it's looking damn nasty. - Robert Scoble
Good point Robert. Do you know anyone who has done some scenarios, projected possible outcomes? Any critical thinkers who have drawn a picture of what the next likely 'dominoes' might be? - Leif Hansen

Alex: you are just being a jerk now. Since you told me to "be positive" the market has dropped nearly 2,000 points. Well, someday it'll start going up and you'll probably say "see, I called it." Well, here's my stake: the plane is pulling out of its death spiral slightly. So, Monday I wouldn't be surprised to see an up market. - Robert Scoble
Leif: Auto industry is the domino that's falling now. So, draw lines out from there to who sells stuff to auto industry. That's where the domino falling will go next. - Robert Scoble
Jerk now? I think you used an unnecessary word in there Robert...But seriously, what have you gained by not being wrong? What have you gained by shouting from the rooftops that the sky is falling? Yeah, yeah, you are Mr. Brutally Honest Scoble...It's your shtick, we get it. Actually, no it isn't...your shtick is telling us what's cool out there...showing the light at the end of the tunnel. I have to agree with Robert, I think this is worse than 9/11(regarding the economy of course). This is a meltdown of the markets fundamentals(which werent strong John) - Geoff Schultz
I think we're all working and living like we're almost through the tunnel, but there's nothing wrong in thinking about the downside and getting prepared, in whatever way we can. Talking preparation would be more constructive than beating our heads against the wall. - Christopher Galtenberg
@Robert: Isn't it okay to be positive in the face of negative news? I don't think Alex is saying things are great, he's seeing opportunity and he sees the mid-to-long-term future still being bright. When you're faced with something awful it generally pays to be positive. - AJ Kohn
"Dollar cost averaging has been widely criticized by economists and academic finance researchers as more of a marketing gimmick than a sound investment strategy" - Chris White
If it works for Bob Brinker...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D... - Alex Scoble CISSP
Alex, do you own stock in some dollar-cost averaging related company? There's a lot of links for it. The problem with a lot of these bull market stock guys is they make money for people when the market is going up, but then they just whine and complain about the government, other countries, etc. when it goes into a bear market. If you did dollar-cost averaging starting in 2003 and sold it all in 2007, you did well. Now, not so much. - Chris White
Most market experts would not have told you to do dollar cost averaging in 2003 when the market was recovering. It's a tool to limit risk when investing in bear markets, not necessarily bull markets. And the S&P being at 850 is just utter crap. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D... - Alex Scoble CISSP
Christopher Penn's with ya Robert http://www.christopherspenn.co... "...What we face in the months and years ahead is nearly unprecedented in terms of economic turmoil. Our society at large will be different when we emerge on the other side. Some won’t make it. The goods news? You’re not alone, as my friends remind me often..." - Leif Hansen
People say the same thing in any bear market, but you have to go in at some point and it's better to go in when the market is going down vs going up. But you don't want to go in all at once and be horribly wrong on where the bottom was, so you divide the amount you are going to invest into 10 or 12 blocks and put it into the market in whatever time span you are comfortable with (days, weeks, months) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D... That's Dollar Cost Averaging. - Alex Scoble CISSP
it's all fine, don't worry - Gregory Lent
the worst ain't over. i went to get some take-out from a popular pizza place in the Wall St area last night that has several restaurant/bars and outdoor seating. The weather was nice and since it was Thursday a lot of people were there, mainly wall st types, mainly VP and below younger people. Talked to a few, not too many are worried too much, but that might be bravado (and alcohol) speaking for them. What the resounding consensus was, though, was that there is more pain to come. I've heard (cont.) - grant
...the same from more credible sources too. At least the dollar is revaluing! - grant
Chris, I'm saying that we won't know where the bottom was until we are already past it. If I had additional money to invest in the market right now, I'd probably spread it out over the next 6 to 8 months. I think we should have seen the bottom by then and then those investments would be in good shape to payoff down the road. - Alex Scoble CISSP
