Introducing the Nokia N97, the next generation high-end mobile phone from Nokia. Described by Nokia folks as a “handheld computer” this device is a pretty comfortable high-end phone. It has a tilting (resistive) touch-screen display, and is the first N-series phone with a QWERTY keyboard. It has 32 gigabytes of memory, expandable to 42 GB via 16 GB memory card. It has a digital compass, a 1500 milliamp battery, and DVD quality video capture. It’s extremely comfortable to hold, easy to use, and represents a solid solid evolution of the Nokia smarthphone line.

With Google’s (GOOG) announcement last week that it would begin showing sponsored results for video searches on YouTube, a lot of advertisers and producers have begun to consider a new opportunity to tap into the web’s largest pool of online videos and viewers.

US Teen Research: Teens are highly skilled with social aspects of the web, but miss opportunities to expand their personal interests - http://www.trendsspotting.com/blog...
“It might surprise parents to learn that it is not a waste of time for their teens to hang out online,” said Mizuko Ito, University of California, Irvine researcher and the report’s lead author. “There are myths about kids spending time online – that it is dangerous or making them lazy. But we found that spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age.”

Life is one big negotiation--be it with your boss, spouse, customers or the used-car salesman. Formidable deal makers like Warren Buffett, Bill Clinton and sports agent Scott Boras tend to be born, not made. But talk to negotiating pros from the worlds of government, finance and media, and they'll admit there is at least some science to this art--and there's no better time to master it than in a severe economic downtown.

Winter is upon us, and if you ride your bike to work you may want to think about making your own tire chains. This project doesn't look too hard to make, and I bet they would add a lot of safety to that cold morning commute.

Michael Arrington submits: Bucket tests and experimental products are one thing. But to mess with the real Google search is serious stuff. Why did they do it?

"But before he arrives at the White House, he will probably be forced to sign off. In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review, and the threat of subpoenas. A decision has not been made on whether he could become the first e-mailing president, but aides said that seemed doubtful... For all the perquisites and power afforded the president, the chief executive of the United States is essentially deprived by law and by culture of some of the very tools that other chief executives depend on to survive and to thrive. Mr. Obama, however, seems intent on pulling the office at least partly into the 21st century on that score; aides said he hopes to have a laptop computer on his desk in the Oval Office, making him the first American president to do so."

re:Obama/ no more Blackberry NYTimes - I would think he could legitimately use a short burst public messaging service like Twitter (likely not Twitter itself) to send public messages like the "Sox!" message they discuss without issue. As long as everything said in that channel was public and treated as so I don't see the issue... humanizes the position I say.

I can see him changing the rules. He's done it for everything else.

Change the Presidential Records Act? Can you imagine the outrage if Bush tried to do that?
- Brian Newman
Why does he need to change the Presidential Records Act? Communicate simply, probably not on complex issues, in the open in public seems to jive with the act to me... "Enjoying a nice dinner with friends" type messages... humanizes the role...
- Ben Hedrington
Two commenters suggested a change to the rules. I'm with you. He is not prohibited from using a Blackberry. He can use one if he chooses. He just needs to be aware that every email he sends can wind up in public. Which I'm sure has his advisors shitting their pants.
- Brian Newman
Doesn't the maxim already advise us so anyway: treat all mail you send as if it might be divulged eventually.
- John Lam
For most of us, any e-mail we send is exactly as secure as a message sent via a postcard.
- Stephen Mack
This could be the CHANGE Obama was talking about. Out with the BlackBerry, in with the iPhone.
- Kevin Singarayar
well, as long as they set up his device with encrypted security and host the incoming and outgoing email servers, i don't see a problem.
- Dustin
@zeigen postcards are _more_ secure due harder costs on sniffing.

I don't know if I was just more apathetic before, but I'm fascinated at all this behind-the-scenes transition stuff I'm just reading about now. Agree that being allowed to use e-mail or at least Twitter would continue to humanize our beloved Pres. Barack, but I also see how it could be a risk, because nothing's 100% hackerproof. It's a cat and mouse game and there will always be someone out there with a ton of determination and even more time on his or her hands.
- Rebecca Sun
The first president to have a laptop on his desk? WTF did all the rest do, have everything hand-delivered to them in print form? Did they have someone read it to them, also? Mr. Singarayar - lol, no. He's an executive - no time for toys!

On day one, he's gonna set up a FF account and put his legs up and hang out with US!

Identified by some psychologists and psychiatrists as part of an “extreme community” on the Internet that appears to encourage delusional thinking, a growing number of such Web sites are filled with stories from people who say they are victims of mind control and stalking by gangs of government agents. The sites are drawing the concern of mental health professionals and the interest of researchers in psychology and psychiatry.

I like the FriendFeed real-time (beta) feature, but it is frustrating to stay on the page to watch the updates. The mini window option is also not such a great solution, because you can't really pin it in one place. But I found an easy way that enables you to do that (and more). Just download Split Browser plugin for Firefox, and splits the content area of the browser window as you like.

"Misshapen fruit and vegetables won a reprieve on Wednesday from the European Union as it scrapped rules banning overly curved, extra knobbly or oddly shaped produce from supermarket shelves. Ending regulations on the size and shape of 26 types of fruit and vegetables, the European authorities killed off restrictions that had become synonymous with bureaucratic meddling. The rising cost of commodities also persuaded the European Commission that there was no point in throwing away food just because it looked strange."

How obscenely, utterly wasteful is it to had a LAW that says you cannot sell misshapen vegetables? W.T.F??!?!???
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
The mishapen ones usually taste better and have more nutrients. It's silly to throw them off the shelves just because... On the other hand, if they wanted to let me take them off their hands for free, I wouldn't object...
- Raoul Pop
seriously. I hope the ugly fruit and vegetables have at least been getting processed before now, not just thrown away.

"For 10 other types of fruit and vegetables, including apples, citrus, peaches, pears, strawberries and tomatoes, shape standards will remain. But items that do not meet European norms will still be allowed onto the market provided they are marked as being substandard or intended for cooking or processing."

"The European Union is well known for its detailed regulations on agricultural items. Commission Regulation (EC) 2257/94, for example, states that bananas sold in Europe must be “free from malformation or abnormal curvature,” though Class 1 bananas can have “slight defects of shape,” and Class 2 bananas can have full “defects of shape.” Bananas were not covered in the ruling, so for now, these standards remain."
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I wonder if this has to do with Europe's strict rules on genetically modified foods? Less GM foods mean more "freak" veggies.
- Andrew Smith
My only gripe on funky shaped veg is that they're harder to prep: that funky parsnip in the picture would be harder to clean and peel, for example. But other than than point of sheer laziness on my part, I really don't see the point in requiring aesthetically pleasing produce...

Love edamame? Have no idea what edamame is? They're soybean pods. And the beans inside are delicious. Mmmm, soybeans, mmmm. Half the fun of eating them is kicking the scrumptious little bastards out of their pod home. Pop! Now you can get that feeling anywhere thanks to Bandai's Puni Puni Edamame keychain. The $6 gadget gives you that satisfaction of evicting soybeans whenever you want. Each bean has a different face on it, so you'll never get bored because each pod will contain three different faces! That's a lot of entertainment. For six dollars. Also, it says you're not supposed to eat them but I did anyways. I'm growing a bean plant in my tummy!
