I'd just like to personally say thank you to all of you for your support with Flickchart. It's been incredibly exciting and rewarding to see so many of you enjoying it and sharing here on FriendFeed. It really means a lot to us, and we appreciate you and all the help you've given us through your comments, suggestions, and opinions. Thank you.
my son and I played it on the way home on the train tonight - ever selection we made was the same which is a little freaky as a dad :)

Thank you for such a great service!
- Kevin Whalen
@jeremy lol dammit you mean I squatted on tunechart.com for nothing? (kidding of course I have no connection to Miami) hellz no! i would have been shocked if you did stop there! in fact I'm heading to GoDaddy right now to grab Colorchart.com, Countrychart.com, universechart.com, shampoochart.com, carbonatedbeveragechart.com and cheesechart.com so I can head you guys off at the pass and sell you the domain names for a quick buck ; p Seriously though - VERY much looking forward to the tune version!
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Don't forget videogamechart.com and boardgamechart.com and tvchart.com and bookchart and fastfoodrestaurantchart.com and cookiechart.com and sitechart.com....the possibilities are ENDLESS. The music one should be next, though, definitely. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Music - is definitely next... others are planned.
- Nathan Chase
Nathan, with these charts you are really spoiling us.
- Andrew Roche
That's probably not what some FriendFeed users will be saying once we launch them all with FF integration.
- Jeremy Thompson
No need for carbonatedbeveragechart.com Marco . . . Coke and Cherry Coke are the only things worth drinking :P
- Lindsey is Fierce!
You're welcome, thank you for the service. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Yeah, thanks a bunch. The service has been really sweet and very addicting. Kudos.

Wow, I just noticed I can moderate comments to this thread. How odd! Looks like I could even delete it.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
that is strange Daniel - perhaps a bug of DM'ing large groups of people?

Maybe "delete" just means "remove me from this list". I'll try it on some other less awesome thread.

Hello! I'd like to extend a request to see if you've used Flickchart lately. If not, were you just not interested enough to continue using it? Not enough features? If you have used Flickchart lately, what's kept you coming back? Would you have any advice for us to draw you back to the site on a regular basis? Any comments or suggestions are most welcome. Thanks in advance! Appreciate it!
- Nathan Chase
For me, I've visited it a few times in the past year (based on when people mention it or you mention there's an update). It's a fun distraction, but I'm not sure what would keep me visiting regularly. My favorite movies of all time don't change that often, and I'm not sure what I can do with that list once I have it other than point it out as an example of what Flickchart does (so, a...

Honestly, I haven't used it in a long time and it's for two reasons: I began to lose interest once the novelty wore off and I just haven't really had time. I think about it a lot and always think to myself, 'I should spend some time on Flickchart,' but then I see an inbox or feed reader with a ton of unread items, Audrey starts crawling all over me, etc. Plus, since I've been working again, I've not had time for much of anything like this.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I pop on fairly often, I guess - a few times a week. But I feel like I spend a lot of time trying to get new adds in place (especially since they all come in right at the middle, which is not too bad if they should be higher, I just rank them a bunch of times, but if they should be lower it's a major pain since it's really hard to move things DOWN on the list), and that feels more like...

I haven't, but then my love affair with movies has subsided greatly since I graduated film school. It's me, not you. ;)

Yeah, I haven't used it in a while. I just haven't been watching as many movies as I used to... for lack of time. However, if I got a question a day from Flickchart in my email, asking me if A was better than B, I might click on it. That's an idea for you...
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
from email
I've been watching more than ever, but I forget to go rank them sometimes (also the ranking individual movies on the three-at-a-time page is less fun - didn't I hear that you were working on a new way to do that?). Ooh, fanciful idea based on Ahsan's comment - integrate with the Netflix RSS feeds or something so when you return a movie Flickchart automatically pops it up to rank. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I'm never really at my computer when I use flickchart so I guess if I had any feedback (which I haven't thus far because the service has been great!) it would be to perhaps optimize the mobile site for android phones. For me it the site hangs a lot, and I can't actually access the charts on the top. But it's a small criticism as I can still choose what films I like with reckless abandon! :D

Use the FF Tools Embed > Feed Widget http://friendfeed.com/embed (Image version) and paste the HTML into Reader using the "Your Stuff" > "Shared Items" -> "Have some thoughts to share?" textbox. Let them know where you came from!! Check out http://www.google.com/reader... to see the results (I used the Note on Reader bookmarklet on my FF homepage and THEN added the HTML).
- Chris Myles
Interesting idea. I have a 'lifestream' bundle and share some of my posts that way. Unfortunately you have to delete them once FF imports them back, but not too much of a pain.
- Kol Tregaskes
Chris, what embeds would you share from there? I imagine sharing individual entries would be good but not sure what could be shared from the embed page?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol.. It's more of a hack to show people where you came from, and gives you (and those you share with) a quick place to check your FF updates within reader. Since the image auto-updates, it's perfect!!
- Chris Myles
GROUPS: You can also embed groups but not directly. Just change your username to the group name.. width is a cool option as well!! http://friendfeed.com/embed....
- Chris Myles
BTW: this is ONE of the MANY reasons I think FriendFeed kicks ass.. Most products aren't even thinking about embedded versions of their content, let alone dynamic images for sites that don't support iframes (or when javascript is disabled). It just adds to the flexibility and power of the platform.. (Facebook.. hint hint)!!
- Chris Myles
Just tried this in GR and it works. Thank you Chris.
- Polly Potter
No worries Polly. I saw yours in Reader.. You might want to make it wider to get more goodies in the same height. I set my width to 600!! BTW Where are you getting feedback from the Reader team? I've got a some stuff logged into their help site.. haven't heard a peep from anyone (some stuff has been sitting there since last November). http://friendfeed.com/akiva...
- Chris Myles
Fixed FF widget in GR to 600 as you suggested and it looks a lot better. Thank you.
- Polly Potter
Chris, if you are referring to the comments of Jenna Bilotta that I shared in GR, I found them in FF and parked them in GR for ease of finding again.
- Polly Potter
Ok thanks Polly, glad to know the width looks better, I'd have a look but I can't .. http://ff.im/7JFoG

Oh, Dawn, that's rich cause I blocked you for bringing vapid, banal, and inconsequential stuff to friendfeed a while back. All you have to do is look at all the items from the Google I/O conference to see just how wrong you are: http://is.gd/HaUQ

"Personal Content Database" is quite apt (especially if we could have our service icons back) - When working in twitter and waiting for twitter's page to refresh a new post, it is quicker to jump to FriendFeed, because the post is there instantly.
- Chris Loft

We have received numerous reports of excessive FriendFeed posts showing up in Facebook this evening. While we are not 100% sure, it appears to be an issue on Facebook's end due to ignoring application settings. We have disabled all FriendFeed updates to Facebook until we are sure the problem is resolved.
See http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... for more information - it seems to also have impacted Twitter's Facebook app. Again, we are not sure if it is a problem on our end or not, but we are investigating now.

@phil couldn't you do the embed feature... ? post something to posterous.. and then 'edit' the post and paste the embed? Or maybe simply email it?

Phil, click on the 'Share' link of the FF entry, then copy the embed code. Create a new Posterous entry, select HTML mode and paste in the embed code. You'll need to edit the width and height (looks like 500 for width). Then post. :-)

http://mylescrew.posterous.com/ Right now I'm just testing, the import from Blogger was REALLY easy. I'm trying to "port" BlurbBits (http://ff.im/4tlY2) to make them work better on posterous. The iframe style parameter gets removed, which is different than Blogger (there is *always* something).
- Chris Myles
Amani, the little images for twitter etc you get if you autopost to those sites but you might end up with duplicate posts that way. There is a friendfeed badge you can put in your posterous profile at http://friendfeed.com/embed... use the image format, not javascript.

@koltregaskes, my posterous is at http://alexschleber.posterous.com "Quick Hits Business Mindhacks". Had been using it quite a bit the first 6 months of this year. I'm a big fan of Garry & Sachin, but really wish posterous would hurry up with some of the much needed feature upgrades (skins and/or CSS, Retweet button - just use Tweetmeme, custom sidebar HTML, WYSIWIG bookmarklet, etc.) Seems like they're stalling a bit right now, no?

They have to be careful not to mess with the simplicity of it, though; that's why so many people like it. If they tart it all up, it might as well just be Tumblr. Which already exists.

It's a shame that FF is not growing yet has all better features over the likes of Twitter and Facebook but what is causing the lack of growth and what could be done to increase growth in FriendFeed?
- Kol Tregaskes
FF is too much work. Consumes time, needs a lot of effort and most people are happy with one-to-one than one-to many interactions. Twitter wins.
- vijay
FriendFeed fits in a space in between Twitter and Facebook. There is very little reason to join FF if you are already using both Twitter and FB.
- Daniel Sims
Is it down to 'missing' features? Is the poor introduction for new users to blame?
- Kol Tregaskes
Vijay, yeah it can be pretty complicated for the new user, how would you make is simpler?
- Kol Tregaskes
if you make it any simpler it becomes twitter. Only way to go is to get users to replace their Blogs with FF. I think that's what they are working towards.
- vijay
I have replaced some of my blogs with friendfeed. I think it's excellent for blogging (microblogging).
- Svartling
from email
Vijay, you meant for writing your own blog articles? Yep, that would be great. All I'd really need it a few HTML options in the first comment to do this. Nothing too fancy. Then I could blog from FF, embed it on my site and everything is synced, comments and all. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Svartling, I've done the same thing also.
- Ashikur Rahman
I think what needs to be done is have a clear "walk-through" example of setting up one's full social media life on FriendFeed. It's a great box of toys for exploring and tinkering -- but trust me, new users will be quite daunted at first unless they have some hand-holding
- Ashikur Rahman
Ashikur, I see this all the time as I seek out new users to welcome them each day. A lot post their first entry as "what do I do now?". Once new users have completed the registration process they are put on friendfeed.com with no other explanation. A nice Flash anim is needed here to show the new user the basic features of the service.
- Kol Tregaskes
FF should go all the way and become a fully-featured Twitter client. People will join and stay for that, then eventually fall in love with FF. Right now, FF's integration with Twitter is just half-way done and causes more confusion.
- Daniel Sims
Make it a fully-featured Twitter client with better blogging functionality.
- Svartling
If I could import my non-FF Twitter friends, keep it refreshed if I unfollow them and swap them to FF users if they join, then I'd use FF as my Twitter client. But the likes of Seesmic Desktop provide all sorts of useful features like RT and tabs for replies for multiple Twitter accounts and DMs.
- Kol Tregaskes
FF requires more time to enjoy. Many of the features are probably difficult for new visitors to see or find. The interface may be overwhelming and it may be a bit too "Zen" in appearance for most people. People used to Twitter may find it harder to connect to others (they may find the lack of @ replies as a communication hurdle). The API isn't exploited as widely as Twitter's. Mobile...

Kimber, interesting points there. Twitter is definitely a broadcast tool whereas FF is a discussion tool.
- Kol Tregaskes
I have noticed with friends that FF requires some usage on the part of the individual, so it's a hard sell and steep learning curve that way. Most of my friends I introduce here see a relatively blank page, with just my posts. They're timid to subscribe, and thus see a really whitewashed space.
- anna sauce
Anna, agree about it being a hard-sell. I think the email features should be plugged more. I think there is a big market of users that I used to emails and know nothing about social media beyond Facebook. I'm trying to tempt a few friends onto FF via the email features, to them it's a matter of registration then emailing me to a different address. Eventually they may move onto the site and use all the regular features.
- Kol Tregaskes
I think FF is too much for people new to social media I don't know. I think the realtime thing kinda pushed a lot of people away as well. I'm finding myself finding more people I'd rather interact with on Twitter and Facebook than FF. Discussions are nice, but they are time consuming. Another thing that bothers me on FF is a user issue, but I think with some encouragement from FF is could be improved: There are too many blank profiles. People should be encouraged to say 'something.' It takes a lot of work to see if you want to follow somebody, if they have a blank profile. Also, private feeds are so off putting. Some of it is habit. And herding behavior. If their friends use it, then they want to. Maybe FF should be all about quality rather than quantity. I stepped through many people to help them start up. Showed them how to use the bookmarklet. None of them wanted to use it. It's a new technology in its own right. Sometimes peeps are just set in their ways?

from BuddyFeed
FriendFeed needs to think through its use cases, & survey users for their preferences between them. Examples are FF as feed reader (needs a "Subscribe to this blog" bookmarklet), or the FF as Twitter client++ mentioned above by several people, which I'm also big on. Then, once decided, make it clear for new users through usage videos, UI "obviousness" improvements, etc. how it works....

the main reason why friendfeed doesnt catch fire is its lack of complete profiles...i cant search for people from munich,...or from my schools, etc, etc,... FAIL

Chris makes a very good point and so does Ashikur. No complete profiles. On FB you can pretty much trust that the person is a real person by looking at the profile, you get a sense of community, you can find people you know, or used to know, etc., etc. Ashikur's point should be very easy to fix.

Mass media is driving twitter adoption nothing else.

- Jason Nunnelley
Having just switched over to using Friendfeed for all my social networking, I can say that making this a full-featured Twitter client would bring more people in. Once here they'd realize that's not what it's really about. But the halfway method that exists now is a major deterrent.
- John Ladd
Kol, IMHO: 1) The barrier to entry increases with the character limit and inversely to the photo count. 2) Let's face it, the biggest differentiation from twitter is not comments (twitter has @ replies) or the better search (although, that's big) or attachments (twitter has 3rd parties for that) -- the differentiation is groups, yet the process of finding a group is still pretty awful (by searching - the results are cluttered at best) or non-obvious (by clicking on someone's subscribers and scrolling down).
- tollie williams
The easiest thing about FF is the aggregation. The harder elements at first are saved searches and building up new friends on FF. overcome these two harder elements and it should move better.
- George Hall (Australia)
from BuddyFeed
biggest reason is publicity. no Oprah, no plusk. no MarkZ.
- MikeAmundsen
Better RSS reading-support would be great - I use FF instead of GReader now for simplicitiy but it's not ideal. Searchable profiles too. Searching by location would be great. I'd love to sub to more people in the UK, London or even locally in Kent but that's hard unless that stated they are from that place or join a local-based group.
- Kol Tregaskes
Ashikur, yeah little, basic things like that are still missing.
- Kol Tregaskes
For a "complete profile" what would you like to see included?
- Kol Tregaskes
Should FF should status updates, e.g. on our profiles?
- Kol Tregaskes
tollie, agree that group search results need a lot of work, what would you like to see on such searches? Number of subscribers, group description?
- Kol Tregaskes
George, how could FF overcome those two issues?
- Kol Tregaskes
Marlin, what suggestions have you seen in FF-Feedback that you think would help FF in growing?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, Re: improving group search. I think the Find groups page should look a lot like WeFollow.com, except where WeFollow has category titles, FF should be organizing the groups by "Most (subscribed/active) among (friends/everyone) (today/this week/this quarter/this year/all time)."
- tollie williams
(Yes, that's 2*2*5=20 possible groups. But you would design it to show 3 categories, with the switches I put in parenthesis as interface elements.)
- tollie williams
Oh, and I forgot to say: the text visible should be "subscribers", but clicking on the INFO button would reveal the group's description and an estimated activity count (similar to the new subscriber emails- "about 10 posts a day" eg).
- tollie williams
We don't tolerate trolls. Hence, flat.
- Steven Perez
Steve's point is most likely it. Trolls don't have an outlet here, which limits traffic to truely useful and entertaining content, rather than purely emotionally focused content. FF may have uncovered one of the core reasons for lack of traffic on any social site, in tandem with xkcd's "someone is wrong on the internet": users empowered to effectively ignore trolls limits rate of growth.

Turn FriendFeed into an embedded comment system and information stream for websites. Make the fact that it's a widget less obvious, replace the commenting system of the host. Host the conversation outside of FF, and bring it back.

It's almost impossible to be a 'casual' friendfeed user. You either go all in and comment like crazy and spend A LOT of time reading and posting and being witty, and if you're really good you might start to get some subscribers. If you don't invest a lot of time, you don't get anything out of it and your feed sits in obscurity with very little social interaction and you wonder whats the...

I think it just needs to be more traditional. Comments start out very compact in my monitor here. Very unlike a forum and has tinier fonts. The post also feels too grayed out. The rest could be improved by discovery. Related posts like blogs. Better integration of services. Finally better unification of comments from all the things it aggregates. For ex. Posterous really won me over...

My account was suspended for some reason. Awhile ago I had some duplicate posts due to wayward drupal module however for some reason it was suspended in the last 4 hours. I was thinking about this today - I don't remember 4 or 5 entire tech conferences devoted to just Facebook in a single year. That makes me think something's different about Twitter. Maybe you're right on the reasons - I'm not sure what it is, but Twitter has the celebrity appeal that is drawing more people percentage-wise than Facebook. Interesting to see if Facebook can turn things around (I have faith they will).

Jesse: I've talked with dozens of businesses and they all say Facebook isn't working as well for them.
- Robert Scoble
Facebook needs to fix the fundamental issues I laid out in that post before businesses will get excited. Hopefully the FriendFeed team can help them there.
- Robert Scoble
Robert yeah - that's why I was one of the few excited about the FriendFeed acquisition. I think it has the chance to fix those problems. I agree completely. In the meantime I'm going to make Facebook better for business on SocialToo. :-)
- Jesse Stay
i think robert's hit it on the head. FB is simply too cumbersome and too information-poor to be of value to businesses; twitter's extreme simplicity ("just" a stream) and ability to be mined make it easy and valuable for businesses to use. i'm on a trip to nyc right now and am amazed at how much local businesses have picked up using Twitter.

Twitter is open to the world. Facebook content is only really fully open if you subscribe. Facebook has an image problem where business is concerned, basically it's perceived to be full of kids wittering on about drunken nights out. Similar opinions could be held about Twitter but successes are easy to see and the 140 character limit also limits the bullshit. Twitter is an old fashioned...

It so baffling how such a mess of a site that is USELESS w/out a 3rd party app has such a HUGE adoption rate. On second thought, I blame you guys, Robert & co., for bringing the masses over. Now, no one wants to leave! ;)
- Mona Nomura
it's not the site itself that is really the useful part, it's the platform it has become. Actually, I'd venture to say that, since most people still use the web interface, it explains why most people still don't see the power of Twitter. I've always disliked it, but it's success in penetrating...uh...everything cannot be denied.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Maybe power is a little strong, LOL. I've never noticed the search being broken, though.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
@rasheen @mona - it's irrelevant whether the useful part is the site or a third party app. No third party would exists without Twitter. How smart is to let others do the hard work at your place (if you'll be able to make money from this)? ;-)

I don't think I could ever engage with Twitter in its current form. The reason why businesses and celebrities like it is that it's so simple. The can post updates from their mobile phones and look at their follower count and feel good about themselves being popular. Robert, this looks way off dude. 'Underhyped', what else is more hyped than Twitter these days? And how did you figure the $5-10 B valuation? @edwk / Edwin, totally agree with you that Twitter has huge issues in the user discovery department without the use of third party tools. I need to partition my sd card.. Can I just shrink the fat32 and make an ext with gParted?
- Christopher A Carr
I partitioned the drive fat32 in the front and ext at the end prior to trying to flash the ROM, but the sd card became completely unmountable on all of my windows and Linux machines -- with Android complaining about a damaged sd card. Had to format back to all fat32. Not sure what happened. Will try it again.

yah, it should definitely be readable in your OS.. something seems to not have gone right.. I forgot to mention the obligatory 'backup what you have on your partition just in case' beforehand..

@Ralph I have 60mb free, but I'm using Apps2SD. If you're not using Apps2SD then that sounds like the right amount of free ram. I barely had 14mb free before I did this.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
@Christopher I formatted mine with a partition manager. First partition was FAT32, second was EXT3
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Haggis: Apps2SD is a no no and not necessary with Cyanogen's ROM -- or so I understand.
- Christopher A Carr
Well what I meant was that Apps2SD is already built in so I'm using the one included in the ROM.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
OK, about to try again. Will I be given the option to transfer apps once the new partition is detected?
- Christopher A Carr
Nah, the beauty about the ROM is that it will detect and do it automatically. Once you have the partitiions set (and your phone reads your card), go to SD Card and Storage under settings and if you did it right, it will show the "SD card secondary" space with your new partition. Take note of your available phone memory, restart your phone, and check it again. Should be closer to 50-60mb. :D

I had heard about something like this a while back. I try to do it as much as I can but jackalopes are always cutting in the space. Oh well.

Continue what you are doing Curtis. Don't mind those jackalopeseses
- AJ Batac
This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.
- Phil G
Try that on british motorways and you'll find forty lorries and assorted 4x4's filling the intervening space. Most traffic jams would be avoided (except where sheer volume of traffic is the cause) if everyone left a two-second gap between them and the car in front - whatever speed they're doing - and don't brake unnecessarily
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Living in LA has totally colored how I drive now. I remember going back home to SD to see my folks and I was agog at how much more aggressive I'd become. :(
- Derrick
It's not cheating, it's just optimal timing :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's the rocket scientist like this that causes wrecks behind him and road rage. Slower traffic keep right is the law (for good reason). He demonstrates why he should stay in the far right lane, go about his business, and stop trying to "fix all of the traffic around him". What an ego.
- Robert Kenney
the most important part is really the end, where he says how this style of driving is actually calming and altruistic instead of infuriating and selfish.... geez, if everything felt that way we'd have less problems once people got out of their car, all frustrated and pissy.
- Ňicķ
Actually, on British motorways they have variable speed limits (for example, on the M25 around London). They found out that, if they lower the speed limit (sometimes as low as 20-30 MPH), they can keep traffic moving; however, if they keep the speed limit high, they get a seriously bad traffic jam. It was interesting to watch.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
I received a 404 error. There seems to be a traffic jam on the server as well.
- Louis Trapani
from iPhone
It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?
- Tim Hoeck
It might cause more disruption with cars behind him moving into the other lane to pass him. Honestly, I can't stand drivers who leave a huge gap in front during a traffic jam. Josh, it's basically just extending a tripod and holding it in the middle :) http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Rodfather
Interesting: "Governor Bush vetoed 2005 SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are 'cautious and careful.'" - from "State keep right laws" http://www.mit.edu/~jfc...
- Micah Wittman
So, his basic tactic, albeit in a single lane, is similar to what I see highway patrol officers do when they want to SLOW DOWN traffic -- the highway patrol car swerves back and forth from fast to left to right lane and back and forth, lights ablazing, effectively doing two things -- creating a BIG GAP between the cop car and the rest of the traffic in front of him, and second SLOWS...
- Pete Delucchi
A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.
- Andre P. Siregar
My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. The website at http://trafficwaves.org/ is interesting, especially the link to http://www.ur.umich.edu/0304... that claims single-lane jams would be radically reduced if >=20% of cars had adaptive cruise control.
- Matt Cutts
kinda like why people are requested to exit in an orderly fashion during a fire. The only hindrance to this is getting over the feeling of being taken advantage of by the jackasses who ignore the order. But no pain no gain and you have to live with that for the greater good.
- vijay
I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

the biggest cause of traffic jams are the idiots who don't get in lane and bimble along in the middle lane without any plan to actually overtake anyone. I've seen people when there has been nothing on the inside lane and yet they won't pull into it as they should. This is even more obvious when you consider that articulated lorries aren't allowed to drive in the outside lane, meaning...

Great to see this taken up again - I've been doing this since I first read his site years ago...
- Kevin Marks
I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.

While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.
- Eoghann Irving
I agree Eoghann Irving. Wish everybody thought like this.
- ashish
+1 Pete Delucchi. I do agree it's probably better for your mental health to drive this way. Assuming you don't mind the "insult" of everybody cutting into to your lane.
- Matsis
Drivers behind me may get annoyed but there is always room at the front ;)
- ashish
I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.
- Nick Lothian
for the most part this will work; unless you're in the NYC area or such.
- clarke thomas
Glen, unfortunately, variable speed limits on the motorways here in the UK don't actually work as well as you might think. During heavy traffic, most drivers look up at the sign as it changes from 50 to 40 and think "If only". The other problems are the speed cameras in those areas - we have two types. To avoid being caught by the normal cameras, drivers zoom between cameras at 80+mph...

The only part of my body with enough hair make a growth phase montage like that about, then shave #blamedrewscancer would rather have the cancer than view.
- Matthew DeVries
suggestion - after you shave it, grow it again based on the amount of money you raise. something like 1 day per $5 raised. so if you raise $100, then you let it grow 20 days before shaving again.

Then I would like to kindly offer up a report of my 'everyone' privacy setting not making status updates available on my public, world viewable profile (even though FB warns me every time that it will).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
cool you`re in San Mateo now at Facebook!!!!!
- sofarsoShawn
Mike, in your privacy settings there are options to make profile, status updates, etc. viewable to 'everyone'. The privacy FAQ on FB says setting it to 'everyone' will make those items viewable to the entire internet, even people without a FB account. That is not, however, what is actually happening.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Benjamin, there is this bug - I can't get "facebook.com/torque" - can you help me?
- τorƍue
You can start with the email notifications! ;) They aint like the FF ones.

Here's one: when someone sends you a friend request, there's a box you check to say if you want that person to be in your feed. Regardless of whether that box is checked or not, the person will show up in your feed. That is annoying

Tyson, have you been reading my mind?? xD Although since Ben's talking about FB, I limit my post to FB. And besides, for the time being, http://www.fftogo.com/ is sufficient for my needs :-)
- Pandu ● IT Optimizer
If poss I would like to see FB and Google and not FB against Google ,if they will work one with the other we will all have a better world
- Johni Fisher
Jeunelle, I knew I shouldn't have started this. Autofollowing was stupid on Twitter and it'll be stupid here. But I will check you out.
- Robert Scoble
Johni: that's not how this will play out. Facebook wants to be the next Google.
- Robert Scoble
It's definitely a crazy space right now. The post helps explain or elaborate (for me) on our very brief conversation from this morning at Shel's. How do you think Google Reader and all the enhancements they've been doing plays into all this. It would seem that they are trying to be more like FriendFeed?
- frank barry
Btw...did you know, you can add tags by typing ((tag: abc, def, ghi)) ? i only found that out today...
- Zee.
consider that one "pans" the steam for signal/gold, using ones social graph, etc... we should look to turn the stream into a gushing river of data that we ride ... the stream is your friend(feed) :)
- khrisloux
frank: Google Reader falls apart for me. They still haven't fixed their speed issues. I hate it. And, anyway, Facebook or Twitter is where I get the news now and it comes in a lot better than Google Reader.
- Robert Scoble
khrisloux: I love the stream as much as anyone, but it does not solve all problems. If I want to find a pizza place in Half Moon Bay the stream is worthless. Now, if you give me a list of four pizza places, each with its own stream, now THAT is huge value!
- Robert Scoble
Robert : FB are soooo far from Google ,Google knows to make money and FB are far years from that ,if we are talking on the real time - Google is going to win it big ,,, FF is with FB as they understood it 2 months before FB
- Johni Fisher
Johni: did you know that Facebook has $500 million in revenues ALREADY per year? Do NOT underestimate this company. It is going all the way.
- Robert Scoble
Now, if you give me a list of four pizza places, each with its own stream.. that is where the money is..
- Tyson
Reader has sped up some with the addition of "PubSubHubbub", but i agree it's not Twitter. Twitter works best for me from a news standpoint. Reader is doing something though. Reader needs some sort of crazy seach or Google needs to push reader "comments", "likes" and "shares" into their search results.
- frank barry
[first i think you should go get dinner!] both views are relevant 1) the aggregated stream of "pizza" and 2) the content level stream for each restaurant ... why should i have to filter/sort/read each restaurants stream when i can manipulate a giant river of pizza (data) with the click of a mouse?
- khrisloux
Tyson: actually that just creates the necessary ingredients for money. The real money is in Yelp's offers. But those will appear right over the stream. :-)
- Robert Scoble
khrisloux: if you give me both we're both happy! :-)
- Robert Scoble
ha! only requires global deployment of Echo ;)
- khrisloux
*walks over to Yelp, opens door and peers in..*
- Tyson
So Twitter and Yelp need to meet eachother ... match made in heaven :)
- frank barry
frank: yelp and Twitter would be a VERY interesting combination. The problem is @ev wants to be a billionaire and Yelp doesn't have enough money and Twitter doesn't have enough money to buy Yelp. So, I don't think that will happen.
- Robert Scoble
The last line of your post astounded me since I wasn't aware that Facebook had hired a former key employee of Google. When you talk about Gmail or the monetization system at Google there's nothing small or insignificant about it. :)
- James Stratford
Robert :OHH no I dont underestimate them at all but they are THE social community and far from Google ,yes they are the best and the biggST but in the real time I cant see them doing the war against Wave and the integration with Google reader ,Gmail and Google apps ,and reg the FB revenues its great for them if it will help them as well to get profit from that and not to eat it :-))
- Johni Fisher
Yea, Facebook could gobble up Yelp, but that seems far fetched (though they did buy FriendFeed). I see you're point on how it would need to go down. Maybe Twitter will figure out how to make some $ or get more funding. Possible I guess.
- frank barry
Off topic I know, but by the way it's good to see you've adopted Posterous! :)
- James Stratford
If Facebook was thinking (which they obviously have been lately) going after Yelp might just make sense. It would be powerful especially with the iPhone (or mobile world) and people on the go. That sort of falls down because of the type of sharing that goes on within FB though. Twitter is much more "open" and the "culture" of the users is more about sharing/giving than I see in FB. Twitter/Yelp wins on use ... let's see if we can make them figure it out =)
- frank barry
Johni: Google Wave is too geeky and the interface is too complicated. It won't get mainstream acceptance.
- Robert Scoble
Was just looking for your posterous last week. Glad to see you there now.
- Katy Barrilleaux
I can't believe I was on posterous.com before Scoble!
- Prokofy Neva
I am relieved to hear you say Google Wave will remain too geeky and not get mainstream acceptance because it is the great destoyer of chronology. You know how time is so that everything doesn't happen at once, and space is so it doesn't happen all at once *to you*? Well, that's what Google Wave removes.
- Prokofy Neva
The commenting system on posterous blows. I can't fix my terrible typos :(. Robert what advantage do you gain from posting on poseterous over your blog?
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
1. I use Google to search for everything. I never think to search Facebook, unless I know someone is on there for sure - i.e a friend. 2. Posterous is good for 'quick and dirty' posts, and great for grabbing and snatching stuff from emails etc.
- Ian May

My6Sense is another really interesting app, but remains iPhone only. I know we're seeing a variety of apps like that. The same holds in reverse for Blackberry only apps. I wish there was a better mix of cross platform tools so we could use the same ones on our Blackberries and iPods. Not likely any time soon.

Mark: the iPhone should already have a sim in it but if it doesn't you need a small paper clip to open the iPhone drawer at the top of the phone.

They have a mobile web version that predates the iPhone native app. iphone.my6sense.com, so it should be no trouble to add platforms

iphone.my6sense.com is great. Can't wait to see the app.
- metalerik
When/will it be available in the app store?
- Amir
Amir: We're shooting for a release on Thursday, but ultimately it's up to the App Store's approval process (which is unpredictable to say the least).
- Brian Remmel
Robert, I'm not sure I agree they will port it. I agree they've made those noises, but in reality, there are *very* few companies porting anything between iPhone and BB. And by the time they get too it, my take is that it will be to catch up to a competitor who's beat them to other platform (in the case of porting either direction). Competition is the driver really. And losing face or...

Just checked their site out, it looks sensational. I'll probably buy although I have just forked out of a NewsReader last week which, I have to say I'm completely delighted with, "RSS Flash G." Barak, even better. TBH the app store is so insanely competitive in terms of pricing I don't mind paying for the good stuff. I don't t begrudge RSSFLASHG people the €3.99 for the app (I actually consider it to be worth more). My issue with the appstore is all the useless stuff I've bought. Anymore news on this anyone? Scott did you overcome your concerns about feeding this app your Social Networking codes? It's a concern I didn't even have until you raised it so I've been checking back here to see how you got on? David, I did not overcome my concern about typing so many logins into My6sense. I abandoned the setup process. Also, I wasn't using the app, but accessing the mobile page (iphone.my6sense.com) via my iPod touch. Maybe it shouldn't bother me so much, but that Twitter stolen documents thing has made me nervous.

Scott thanks for the response. I'd be interested to know what type of reassurance someone like Barak could provide that would make you more comfortable about this? I'd like to have some type of unified commenting and "liking" system across all social networks. Most people leave comments on FF or FB for articles rather than the commenting system on a blog, even with Disqus or IntenseDebate installed.

@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster.
