US 2008 Election: Results listed by average IQ
Saturday at 12:50 pm - Link
No comment. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Not commenting is probably the smartest thing to do. :) - pea gives ♥ a bad name
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - l0ckergn0me
That might be obvious but people with a lower IQ are also citizens of the democracy. This indicates to me that people with a lower IQ are simply concerned with different issues than those with higher IQs. It doesn't mean their vote is any less important. - ·[▪_▪]·
I'd argue that it's because weaker minds (read: those who don't have critical thinking skills) are more easily swayed. - l0ckergn0me
"Stronger" minds are easily influenced too. You just don't appeal to their beliefs but to their ego. - ·[▪_▪]·
Indeed, the smart comment is no comment :) - Mike Reynolds
That's what I thought, Mike. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Leave it to the smarter people in the country who can think for themselves to vote for the right person. - Mathew Ballard
Stupid! If this were median IQ one might draw a statistically significant correlation between IQ and vote cast. Makes me wonder about the IQ of those that pass this stuff along. - Ryan Petty
this is the same thing from 2004, they just changed the names, it's still silly. - Anika Malone
this is due to all the in-breeding - sofarsoshawn
Republicans used to be the party of the upper class, but money = intelligence so we can no longer give Republicans the upper class. Certainly the lower and middle classes belong to Democrats. So what does that leave Republicans? Oh, okay, still no comment :) - Mike Reynolds
Are they actually trying to say that the average IQ of most of the states is BELOW average? I wonder what percentage of people actually get IQ tests, anyway. My theory is it happens when people are looking for problems, like for those with learning disabilities or who are suspected of having ADHD. - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
IQ is a broken metric anyway. x: - Daniel Bruce
Do you really think this helps your cause? In all actuality, it makes you look like a complete fool. "IQ and the wealth of nations" contains no IQ information for the US States. When you do find "average IQ" numbers for US states, they aren't anything like the numbers in this chart. You are makeing a good case for a negative correlation between IQ and the electrion results when you and others push these fraudulent charts. - John Rubier via twhirl
Potentially a more honest assessment of IQ by State: http://www.vdare.com/Sailer/06... - AJ Kohn
Thanks for the article @msblog. I quote: "And so, politically, the G.O.P. is squeezed at both ends. The party is losing the working class by sins of omission — because it has not developed policies to address economic anxiety. It has lost the educated class by sins of commission — by telling members of that class to go away." - Mike Reynolds
this is from before the election btw - Michael J. Cohen (mjc)
IQ is a racist myth - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
@Bjorn I can understand feeling the notion of the IQ test and score might be contentious for theoretical reasons, but why racist? And why a myth? I mean, IQ tests exist, people exist, smart people and dumb people exist, and often there is a strong correlation between smart people and high IQs, dumb people and low IQs...which part is mythical? - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
But then Obama got elected by people who had the cultural bias in IQ tests the other way. - liju
My Sunday morning comment: "still no comment" - Mike Reynolds
Obama as elitist http://is.gd/21IV - sofarsoshawn
You people fall for this again and again. More about this silly hoax: http://www.snopes.com/politics... - Gus
Wow, New Mexico is that high? Must be that Albuquerque is pulling the state upwards. :D - Steven Perez
Hey, if Connecticut is so smart, then how do they explain Lieberman? Just wondering. - Steven Perez
Gus: So is Sailer's data bad also? - Mitchell Tsai
Got called to task my a conservative friend. http://www.snopes.com/politics... - Kevin Moore
@Neal well, IQ has a racist history, and intelligence is a culture specific word, which means it's subjective. Finally what is 'smart'? What is 'dumb'? Is a guy with 3 phd's, a six figure salary who advances science, but leads a miserable lonely life with, estranged from family smart? Is a drop-out janitor who has children who love her and make her happy all the days of her life dumb? Read what Solon said to Croesus about happiness, it applies to intelligence I think. - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
So what IQ were the third party voters? :P - Morton Fox

October 25 at 2:17 am - via Ping.fm - Link
What changed your mind? - Chris W
Wow. Chris realizes that throwing away his vote won't help anyone? By the way: there's many reasons why we won't see more than two parties taken seriously anytime soon. It all comes down to money. The media doesn't have it to cover three parties properly. In Europe multiple parties thrive because the countries are so small. Here the costs of running serious campaigns are too high. - Robert Scoble
no the difference is the voting system. Many have proportional representation which allows smaller parties to get representation proportional to their percentage of the vote. First-past-the-post voting systems lock out the smaller parties. - John Hardy
of course, they'll never be taken serious if people feel forced to vote for the 2 they're told to vote for. - alphaxion
That need for money also brings forth other problems, like the manipulation that comes from lobbyists' funds. Optimally, there should be a system that does not depend on expensive campaigns, aka campaigns should become a lot cheaper. - Vincent van Wylick
Yay! - Stowe Boyd
Vincent: seems to be one way to make campaigns cheaper: make them shorter and force the candidates to only use public financing. - Robert Scoble
Regardless of who becomes prez, we are all f**ked... - Steven Pelsmaekers
The sheer cost of the US campaigns is something that never ceases to shock me. It's unbelievable the amount they have to pour into it. And it's money that is totally wasted and funnelled back into their propaganda system.. uh, Fox News et al. - alphaxion
Libertarians are taken seriously sometimes. When anyone has a logical voice of dissent, someone listens. A Libertarian's job is to question the status quo. Unfortunately, there are a lot of extremest, illogical libertarians. (I personally am a Democrat voting for Obama.) - Christine Cavalier
I'm voting for Obama so the stupid Republicans in Utah (the Nation's most Republican state, next to my home state, Texas) realize they don't have as much power as they thought they used to. I'm voting for change in the Republican party with my vote, personally. I'll still be an Independent, regardless. - Jesse Stay
No, Scoble - I resent that you would insinuate that anybody is "throwing away" their vote if they cast one in ANY direction. Mind restating that? I changed my pitch because the Republican party is a train wreck - and so is McCain. - l0ckergn0me
Chris, the sheer scope and size of the government clusterf*ck called government sponsored health care is enough to make you reconsider, especially if you are really a libertarian. - Mattb4rd
Pfeww! That will save the world. Thanks Chris! Now I'm relieved after seeing that video where Chris' non-vote helps the dark side to win :) - Ryo
"spread the wealth" is reason enough not to vote for 0bama. - Spencer
@Spencer: So you can't vote for McCain either. He said the same thing in 2000. - AJ Kohn
McCain is helping to spread an enormous amount of wealth from the middle class to the ultra-wealthy, the military-industrial complex, Wall Street flimflam artists, the oil industry etc. Socialism for crony capitalists. This "socialism" and "spread the wealth" meme is inane. - Sean McBride
I'd say it was neither socialism nor capitalism.. it's corporatism! - alphaxion
Robert, I disagree that public funding is the answer. In fact, I would go the other way and say it should all be private funding. If you're a viable candidate for presidency then you should be able to a) generate financial support from voters and b) have a campaign designed well enough that you personally don't have to focus on the fund raising effort. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
I think I would generally agree, Tina. After all, the ability to run a multi-million dollar organization with a significant grassroots component (a billion dollar campaign this year?) is one fairly strong argument for executive ability as well as the ability to build coalitions? But... how much of this is helped by party funding? and how much is the candidate's ability? that's another question - Justin Long
the problem with private funding is the corporate dollars that come with strings attached. There needs to be a clear seperation of government and corporations. Otherwise we end up with the mire we currently face! - alphaxion
Justin, I agree with that and within the confines of an argument about opening up the two party system, I think the answer is clear: no party funding. Make the campaign responsible for generating all their funds in total. If party members or officials want to stump, go for it. But make the candidates responsible for their own funds. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Do parties actually contribute $$ to a candidate? or do they simply raise money for "soft" activities (e.g. party ads, get out the vote efforts, etc?) anyway I *think* I would agree to no party funding (and no govt matching funds either). OR the other alternative would be to regulate the advertising portion of a campaign, give each a certain amount of airtime, and that would be it?? I've heard that solution bandied about before. - Justin Long
From what I've seen (and no I'm not well versed here), parties contribute ad money, possibly generic event money, and currently (sorry, can't resist!) wardrobe funds. Given the entrenched 2 party system, it stands to reason that any initial other party candidates would be at a severe disadvantage with no real national party backing them. If the intent is to foster multiple parties, then all national parties would have to keep their funds out of the campaign. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Getting into the IRV movement in King County. 3rd party candidates will never be taken seriously until we get rid of plurality voting (first-past-the-post). While our high school social studies teachers would love to have us think that no vote is wasted, the effect of a vote for a distant third party is practically zero. As is voting for a Republican Presidential candidate in Utah. But I won't get into the Electoral College... - Kevin Moore
I respect your reasons for changing your mind, and it's one big reason I'm voting Obama as well. If the McCain of 2000 was running and if he'd picked a moderate Republican for running mate, I think he'd have my vote, but as it is now I can't NOT vote Obama. - Tad, Fool
Help build the Libertarian movement, Chris. You'll find liberals to be willing coalition partners. - Chris Baskind
The whole 'spread the wealth' argument is just asinine. What would you call the $300 bribes Bush sent out to taxpayers, if that wasn't a form of 'spread the wealth'? Republicans have been spreading it all along, but to Wall St., defense contractors, and the rich. Its middle America's turn, like it or not. - JC unwired
A Democrat / Liberal monopoly will not be good for America's liberty and prosperity. You are giving the government permission, an implied mandate, to be more & more meddlesome, in all aspects of your life, including the internet. Good people don't need government in everything they do. I just returned from Africa. What a mess! There is always someone at the next crossroad with his hand in your face saying they have the authority of the government, pay your fee. Please reconsider your vote! - John Foss
Just make sure the guy you vote for keeps his promises and is able to cash those checks that his mouth is writing. That's all I ask, participation, not just a vote. I feel you're about to find great disappointment, but I salute everyone for taking that freedom to go out next month and vote :) - Mike L
You're claiming to be a libertarian and yet you're voting for an obvious socialist? And you're doing it so that people take you seriously? Haha. Is this a joke post? - Rob Sterling
There's been another 'Cain wreck? - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
Rob Sterling - I am essentially a libertarian, and I would describe the Republican Party as much more socialist, and much more socialist in a destructive way, than the Democratic Party these days. This is an easy proposition to defend, and I am prepared to defend it. I don't particularly like the Democratic Party, but Obama strikes me as the lesser of two evils when compared to McCain, Palin and their neoconservative and Armageddonist puppetmasters. - Sean McBride
@Rob Sterling .. Chris, like some of the other "A listers" in here, fancies himself a celebrity. Celebrities often publicly do things that don't fit with their steadfast personal ideas in order to spawn viral publicity. Basically, Chris is getting out of a limo in a short skirt--sans panties. - Mattb4rd

The Bible does say to pray for your leaders. I'm not going to judge, but as a Christian I would absolutely accept Obama as president. It will be a proud day as a nation if he wins as well, another ugly chapter of race behind us. Of course, I'm not personally voting for him. When someone says they'd like to share my money with those less fortunate (and not ask me first), it makes me look for an alternative. Of course, the other options aren't looking so hot, either. - Douglas Karr via twhirl
So if Obama wins Palin will agree that God did the right thing for America? So, if Obama wins and she says anything about it being not good for America then ... she's essentially going against God? Am I reading this right? - AJ Kohn

Actually, the election result rests in Diebold's hands. - Pras Sarkar
"A spokesperson for the Almighty said, 'Hey, don't go blaming God for how this turns out. He gave you free will. The people get to decide how this turns out -- isn't that the whole point of democracy? You finally got out from under kings and princes who claimed that God had put them on the throne and gave them the right to rule, and now you want to go back?" - Karim
When asked if God would intervene in the election, the spokesperson replied, "I think it was a big enough miracle just getting the black guy into Harvard Law, don't you? I mean, what more do you people want?" - Karim
A spokesperson for the Evil One was reportedly busy coordinating robocalls to the "pro-America parts of our great nation" and could not be reached for comment. - Karim
@Karim - so, you're saying if you are pro-America you can't be pro-Obama? - Robert Hafer
i'm pro-world, who should i vote for? - Gregory Lent
your extinction Gregory Lent would be good for other species, but not good for man... all things relative even your concept of G-d... which Palin as a woman has a right to believe in as well - ⓃⓄⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂⓄⓃ
@Gregory - I guess it depends on if you want the world to be free or socialist - Robert Hafer
Ah, yes. Socialist is the new liberal. Too bad it's all a bunch of nothing. It's like the bleating of sheep at this point. Hey, McCain defended what you're all so upset about in 2000 - go look at it on YouTube. And the US has a progressive tax system which is ... about redistributing wealth. Find something of substance outside of 'but I want more of the money I imagine I'll make at some distant point in the future'. [Yeah, I'm grumpy right now.] - AJ Kohn
@l0ckergn0me...I love that song! lolz - .LAG
@AJ Kohn - funny, I was referring to McCain being more likely to oppose foreign dictators and you thought I was referring to Obama being a Socialist. Also, taxes are suppose to be for funding the Government, not redistributing wealth; in a free society anyway - Robert Hafer
@Robert: And the Government does what with it? If you give equal value for each dollar the Government spends to each person then those who don't pay taxes get benefit from those that do. Those who pay less taxes get more than those that pay more. If I collect 1 coffee bean from 70% of the people and 10 beans from 30% of the people and then I give everyone one cup of coffee as a result ... who got more value in the exchange. - AJ Kohn
Robert, no, and frankly, I'm not sure how you'd come to that conclusion from what I said. :-) - Karim
@AJ Kohn - come on now; you know your example is so overly simplified and contrived that it can't possibly be a valid - it comes no where near mapping to reality; it has nowhere near the requisite variety of input, transfers, or outputs to be anything but a false framing of the issue - David HC Soul
@David: Yes, it's wildly oversimplified but no, I don't think it's a false framing of the issue. Taxes are collected in a progressive manner but they are not distributed in the same way. Lets make it less wild, lets take Defense spending. Does the guy who paid no taxes get the same value out of a Defense dollar as the super rich? - AJ Kohn
"A spokesperson for The Almighty also expressed dismay that frequently, God only gets consulted on hopeless cases. 'If McCain and Palin were up 20 points in the polls, do you think Palin would be talking about "putting this in God's hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4?" No, she'd be picking out which pair of Manolo Blahniks to wear at the Inaugural Gala.'" - Karim
Asked if this meant The Almighty wanted Palin to consult Him on her shoe choice, the spokesperson replied, "Well, let's just say if she had, her $75,000 Neiman-Marcus tab might not be in the headlines right now." - Karim
I'm going to predict that Palin and her kind will say God is testing American with the election of Obama just like he tested Job in the Bible. - Jimmy Walker
It's actually the very tip of his or her middle finger. - david beckwith

I've got to disagree with the logic. First, the data plan used to be $20 a month, not $10. Second, it depends on your definition of 'cost'. If you already have an iPhone, then the net cost is the cost of the unit, plus any applicable rate differences. If you don't, then it's the listed fees minus what you're already paying for service. Third, a truer 'locked-in cost' would be price + early termination fee ($175 or less, pro-rated), not price + service for duration of contract. - Kevin Fox
yep, that's a deal breaker for me - i already pay too much eheh. I would be curious to know how many taxes and fees go with that $30 data plan as well. - Doug Brooks
We know. I don't think that anyone needed that reminder. - Anthony Thompson via twhirl
True enough. My current voice / data plan is expensive though and my phoen cost as muhc. But its on a better network and does a bunch more stuff, so I don't mind muich. People will pay for the logo of course. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Plus there's the qualitative cost of having to deal with AT&T. - TranceMist
Can you .... oh wait, of course not. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
The cost of that suitcase is not $99. It's $99 plus the $300 you spend on flights each month, plus airport parking and taxis ($90/month), plus incidentals ($55/mo), for the life of the suitcase (2 years): $99 + ($300 + 90 + 55) * 24 = $10,779. That suitcase costs $10,779. - Kevin Fox
