Some emergent properties change the character of the network, the purpose, and the reason for participation. So it will be a disincentive to some (myself included) and an incentive to others. This question seems to come up repeatedly. A couple of years ago Robert Scoble took Microsoft to task for their stance on a political issue (see http://radio.weblogs.com/00010... and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...). Likewise, "Fake Steve Jobs" took some heat on his blog for his support of Obama and criticism of Hillary Clinton, with "Why don't you stick to technology blogging" being a frequent criticism. - Karim

It clearly *could* be a problem if there isn't a separation between news and opinion. That could be one of the complaints -- that people are stuck in a "don't make me think" mode, that they're used to reading (presumably) unbiased technical "news," and now here comes this piece that's going to make them *think* about whether they agree, instead of merely assimilating facts. - Karim

If the stakes are high enough -- if the potential for an injustice is high enough -- I'd rather people err on the side of expressing their opinion. - Karim

My guess is the GOP voters will say no since they don't like the fact that Tim is supporting Obama. But they'd say yes if the circumstances were reversed. I say you should not be muzzled. While you would probably deserve some push back if you went 100% political - it's not a problem if you express yourself. I follow people of opposite political opinions. But then again I am not ashamed of my side and feel strong enough in my convictions that I'm not worried or offended because someone else is GOP. - ScottBourne

I normally round up to the nearest dollar then give 20% on that. Utards tend to be horrible tippers because of the large families so I tend to overcompensate. I've got to disagree with the logic. First, the data plan used to be $20 a month, not $10. Second, it depends on your definition of 'cost'. If you already have an iPhone, then the net cost is the cost of the unit, plus any applicable rate differences. If you don't, then it's the listed fees minus what you're already paying for service. Third, a truer 'locked-in cost' would be price + early termination fee ($175 or less, pro-rated), not price + service for duration of contract. - Kevin Fox

The iPod touch isn't setting the world on fire. It jsut isnt a very good music player for many circumstances (commuting, for instance). The Zune does very well. And the support from the free XNA development kits helps a lot. - Soulhuntre via twhirl

@Soulhuntre I think you are missing the point. It isn't about the iPod Touch per se. It's about OSX Touch and the resulting platform being generated by both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. And the iPhone alone is outselling the Zune by a factor of 8-1 despite the higher price to entry. The XNA means very little in the grand scheme of things. Apple saw that and jumped into the mobile business. MS has its bets in mobile already, but their business there is the traditional OS model with vendors supplying the hardware. You can still buy the Zune at places like Target and Walmart I think. What will be interesting is if Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade /XNA/ community gaming thing takes off, is it possible to bring them back? The idea is that indie developers can code once for three platforms: Windows, Xbox, and Zune. Thinking of the Zune in a few years in the space of gaming is good place to speculate. Then, it's with Sony, Nintendo, AND Apple (ipod gaming makes sense too) - Eric Rice

Asteris -- yes there was interest, but generally the people with the products are scared of pissing Twitter off. This I don't understand -- I think the Twitter folk would welcome a bit of redundancy. Everything they've said publicly and done with the Twitter API indicates that they believe federation is in their future, but mostly the tech industry is scared. Where are the swashbucklers? It's not you, the audio sucks hardcore for me too (On any PC I've been on). I really like some of these interviews, but some of them you should really take the time to get a real camera/mic setup. I know many are just happening on-the-go and that is cool, but preparation and better equipment for some would actually make me want to watch these (I've tried in the past, but the audio was not tolerable. Some worked ok though, like your first FriendFeed interview which was great ) - Bartek Gniado
