I love the whole 'we weren't trying before, but now we're going to crush you' message. As if Microsoft hadn't been trying to crush Apple for the last 25 years.

For whatever reason, when I read Ballmers rant, in my head he was talking like Officer Franklin (Rob Riggle) in The Hangover. "NOT UP IN HERE!"
- Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
"But we are not going to let any piece of this [go uncontested to Apple]," shouted Ballmer. "Not the consumer cloud. Not hardware software innovation. We are not leaving any of that to Apple by itself. Not going to happen. Not on our watch." That's awesome.

Hasn't it already happened on 'their watch'...

Johnny: EXACTLY. What's different other than the rhetoric? It's like they're absolving themselves of the last two decades and framing themselves as 'the all new Microsoft, pay no attention to the old Microsoft'.

Basically Microsoft is saying they are going to fight like hell to get into markets with declining profits because the market innovators have already extracted their monopoly rents. The more Microsoft succeeds at competing the more they actually fail the bottom line. That's quite the visionary plan.
