How very creative. This is very fluid and cool.
- Louis Gray
OK, not exactly what I was expecting, but very cool.

Anyone have the video somewhere other than Youtube? it's banned here in Turkey and I can't wait until we get home (next month) to watch it!!
- Chris Myles
Bret, this video should be titled: A Love Song for FriendFeed ! Great vid (and music) !
- Ahsan Ali
This is superb. I just showed it to my 5 year old son who enjoys Lego and has already taken some great photos, including one or two of his toys. So now he has the seed of the idea that, in time, he could take multiple stills and put them together to make moving pictures. Thank you very much for posting it and giving me and him that opportunity. Maybe, he might use FriendFeed one day too!

I think they need to make a full stop-motion version of the Matrix in legos. Now THAT would be awesome. I wonder what bullet-time looks like in LEGO?
- Bret Taylor
i'd pay to see the stop animation lego matrix, but not the sequels

I'm wary of anything that's claimed to be a panacea for all cancer at any stage, but the clinical trials so far do look promising.
- Victor Ganata
Yeah, I saw PZ Myers's post before. But there are a lot of people who are convinced it's some big pharma conspiracy to keep this drug under wraps.
- Victor Ganata
Must have some effect on their bottom line. ;)

Why are every one but me in on all these terrifying conspiracies? You're all conspiring against ME, aren't you?

Thanks for the link to the far more rational recap of the research. I liked this: "It's like a game of telephone: you can actually trace the account from the sober science paper to the enthusiastic press release to the web account with its extravagant claims of a simple, cheap cure for cancer, and see how the story is gradually corrupted. It would be funny if the final result wasn't going to dupe a lot of desperate people."
- Ken Gidley
I don't know if it will affect big pharma's bottom line that much. Unless dichloroacetate is proven to be magnitudes of order superior to existing treatments such that it completely obsoletes them, it's probably going to be used in addition to, rather than as a replacement for what we already have. And monotherapy is not typical for treating cancer anyway. The problem is that because...

Wouldn't US insurers have an incentive to fund studies?
- Andrew C (✓)
I don't think a health insurance company has ever directly sponsored a pharmaceutical study. I mean, clinical trials for FDA approval cost millions and millions of dollars, and I'm not sure that dichloroacetate will necessarily save health insurers millions of millions of dollars right away (assuming it gets approved.) Cancer is common, but not everyone gets it. It would surely be a difficult struggle to keep their stockholders happy if they invested in something with such uncertain returns.

I bought myself a swim harness so I can swim in our pool. The public 50m lap pool down the road is rather crowded so best I get the ability to swim 50m first before I try it in a busy lane

If you ever get the chance to meet Georgia or Stephen, do eet! They are two of the friendliest, kindest, fun, and most personable people you will ever meet. I had so much fun hanging out with them! <3
Got up, dressed, and drove to work to start the new year off right... only to discover that it's a corporate holiday. Drove home. Babysitter called me a "big dork."
We had some coffee and a nice chat, and her baby spit up all over me a couple of times. Now I'm having a fried egg sandwich. So far it's been an excellent day. :)

"Anyone who has ever dieted knows that lost pounds often return, and most of us assume the reason is a lack of discipline or a failure of willpower. But Proietto suspected that there was more to it, and he decided to take a closer look at the biological state of the body after weight loss."
- Tudor Bosman

"It was almost as if weight loss had put their bodies into a unique metabolic state, a sort of post-dieting syndrome that set them apart from people who hadn’t tried to lose weight in the first place. “What we see here is a coordinated defense mechanism with multiple components all directed toward making us put on weight,” Proietto says. “This, I think, explains the high failure rate in obesity treatment.” "
- Tudor Bosman
Most of these studies are RAPID weight loss studies, and severely calorie restricted diets. It doesn't seem like there is much data related to more gradual weight loss programs. I don't plan on regaining the weight I've lost, period. If that means I have to be 'hyper-vigilant' about my food intake/exercise, so be it.
- Ken Gidley
It does appear that it's the amount of weight loss, not the rate, that is switching the body into post-diet mode. At the bottom of page 7: "One question many researchers think about is whether losing weight more slowly would make it more sustainable than the fast weight loss often used in scientific studies. Leibel says the pace of weight loss is unlikely to make a difference, because...

To me, this article just provides another excuse to people who are overweight that will prevent them from even trying to lose weight. Yes, losing weight is hard; yes it takes work - constant and diligent effort. It requires a change of lifestyle and you have to really WANT it to happen. Perhaps I'm in a better place than some folks to allow me to concentrate on making myself healthy (no...

This morning, I received a gift that brought many happy tears to my eyes: a huge scrapbook of pictures of my father, his artwork & his poems. This means more than words can explain because after he passed, my stepmother threw out all of his things. Until today, I only had a handful of pictures of him. It brought back all the memories of him <3 <3
Apparently, my uncle had found a secret box my grandmother had stashed of all his things. So sweet of my uncle and cousin to put this together for me. I love this gift more than I have words to express.

"For the past few years, various carmakers have been offering blind-spot detection systems for their cars’ side mirrors. Often complex, these systems employ cameras or radar to scan the adjoining lanes for vehicles that may have disappeared from view. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) published a paper in 1995 suggesting how outside mirrors could be adjusted to eliminate blind spots. The paper advocates adjusting the mirrors so far outward that the viewing angle of the side mirrors just overlaps that of the cabin’s rearview mirror. This can be disorienting for drivers used to seeing the flanks of their own car in the side mirrors. But when correctly positioned, the mirrors negate a car’s blind spots. This obviates the need to glance over your shoulder to safely change lanes as well as the need for an expensive blind-spot warning system. The only problem is getting used to the SAE-recommended mirror positions. The cabin’s rearview mirror is used to keep an eye on what is coming...

My wife adjusts her mirrors as C&D recommends, but I haven't been able to make that adjustment. I need to have my own car in the mirror as a frame of reference for my spatial awareness. 30+ years of driving and that habit isn't going to change anytime soon. I tend to check all my mirrors quite often, so I'm almost always aware of when cars are approaching my blind spots and I take that...

Ken, Amit points out you can always lean a little bit if you need to see your own car. I did a lot of that at first, but now trust the mirrors and no longer need to see my own car. I feel a lot safer when driving now.
- Stephen Mack
At least the way Lisa has them set, my head collides with the window long before I can the side of the car - most disconcerting.

I learned how to drive in a car without a mirror on the right side. I don't think I'll ever get rid of the habit of rapidly glancing over my shoulder before changing lanes, blind spots or not.

So it's now 1 month since I began #JohnnyNoCoke I'm feeling good, counting calories and dropped 2 pant sizes... but I have learnt something about weight loss:
While the simple equation "Eat Less Than You Burn" is essentially true, it requires more that just a mantra to work. It requires effort from those around you, be it Rach looking after Georgia for an hour while I'm on the tread mill to changing the diet of your family etc. It requires assertion and confidence, often from a person who do not have a overflowing supply of it. Losing weight is extremely simple yet extremely difficult at the same time.
- Johnny
And keeping it off, is even harder. It's been 7 1/2 years since I lost 70 lbs and it still continues to be a struggle!

Good job Johnny! I calculated earlier this year that just by kicking my soda habit (3 cans a day), I was saving over 53 lbs worth of calories per year! (365 * 3 * 170 kcals/can) = 186150 kcals/year / 3500 kcals/lb = 53.18 lbs/year! O.O
