Dearest FriendFeed Team, I know I shouldn't expect new features, but a retweet on Twitter every time I like a person's Tweet (from Twitter) on FriendFeed would be awesome.
yeah, and being able to interface with twitter lists too, that would be nice... for instance if i could create a room that is fed by one of scobleizer's lists that would be cool... i can do it now, but it's not as elegant and smooth as it could be if it were part of friendfeed - Chris Heath
all that being said... i'm not going to hold my breath, and it's not that big of a deal - Chris Heath
I wouldn't want it to be a retweet. A favorite, perhaps. - Otto
Yeah, otto, a favorite makes more sense with a like than a retweet does (even though lots of people say that the new retweet is the old like)... whatev - Chris Heath
A like isn't really a "favorite". I often like things even though they're not my favorite posts on FriendFeed. I "like" things because I want to participate in the conversation or I want to bring them to the attention of those following me. In this respect it is more like the new retweet feature for Twitter. - Jesse Stay
Yep. Good point, Jesse. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
And of course, opt-out availability. - Itachi
Fulaan, of course - I'm not suggesting it be a default, but I want the option so long as I can already post to Twitter from FriendFeed. - Jesse Stay
On the flipside, for me a like is exactly a favorite. I "like" things in order to add them to my own personal stream of "my discussions". Don't care if other people see it or not. Same with favorites, I do it to have a place to remember tweets for later. But Twitter retweets I do specifically to bring it to other people's attention, which is not what I use FF "likes" for at all. People use the same features in different ways. - Otto
Otto is there any conversation you agree with on here? ;-) - Jesse Stay
It's about 50/50, honestly. ;-) - Otto
jesse, and otto... i dip into both those styles of behavior... a like is a way for me to bring something to peoples attention (here and on twitter) and it's also bookmarking for personal use (and these are social behaviors that i didn't have before i used friendfeed - now there's something to think about) - Chris Heath

Adium's 'Open chats as soon as contact begins typing' feature is awesome and creepy. If you open up a new chat to me and start typing, I get a popup with your icon and a message saying "I'm feeling a disturbance in the force..." *before* you even finish typing and sending the first message in the conversation. Creepy and awesome.

"I should say it is the most complicated photograph I have ever made. It shows position of the Sun on the sky in the same time of a day during one year..."
"Analemma - a trace of the annual movement of the Sun on the sky - is well known among experts of sun-dials and old Earth's globes as a diagram of change of seasons and an equation of time. Between August 30th 1998 and August 19th 1999 I have photographed the Sun 36 times on a single frame of 60-mm film. The pictures were taken exactly at 5:45 UT (Universal time) of every tenth day. Previously, the position of the Sun on the sky was calculated with computer as well as optimal moments of time for taking each of the exposures. However, my success was strongly limited by the weather. Nobody can guarantee fine weather every tenth day even for a few minutes. Approximately, there are 120-170 sunny days a year in Crimea. That made me sure that my aim could be achieved. To do the job, the camera must stay fixed during 12 months. It was difficult to find such a place where the camera would be safe. The solution of the problem was to make a plug-in platform rigidly connected to the camera,... more... - April Buchheit from Bookmarklet

I have a question, this is in no way an attempt to convince you or even to push my own beliefs, I just want to hear your take on something. Rachel, I believe our brains are very powerful indeed, and I agree with you that we know very little overall. But there's lots of proof in the power of our minds to heal our bodies, starting with the placebo effect -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.... - Stephen Mack
This is a good example of a well-documented effect without a very good explanation of the underlying mechanism. But it's a good question you asked -- I don't have to understand something to believe in it, if there's good evidence. - Stephen Mack

We think it's a shifted perspective on Halloween itself. Off Halloween, you're a guest viewing a presentation someone has put together for you but on Halloween you're going around door-to-door collecting stuff from people. We also didn't push donations hard at all. If we just made the box more visible we'd probably collect a lot more. Nevertheless, the main point was entertainment, not fund-raising, so it was okay. - Kevin Fox

Ken, I think you are right about the focus. Also on Halloween we had mostly trick-or-treaters who aren't carrying money around. So they didn't see the donations bucket. Also at one point we... more... - Rachel Lea Fox

From the post: "Going through a recent paper craft exhibition in Tokyo, simply called ‘Castle on the Ocean’ exhibition, one thing that couldn’t escape an attendee’s attention is a piece of work by a Japanese paper craft genius going by the name Wataru Itou. From the piece of work – a complete city, with all the trappings like a electrical lights and even a train – one would be forgiven for thinking the creator is someone who has been in paper craft for decades. Yet as it turns out, Itou is but ‘just’ a student of art at one of Tokyo’s university. Obviously, there lies a very promising student. Words alone cannot exactly capture the intensity of Itou’s creation." - Stephen Mack from Bookmarklet

Scientific method: Propose a theory, test it. This is what I believe in. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
Scientific method: Propose a theory, test it. This is what I believe in.
From the wiki article: "Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses." - Stephen Mack from Bookmarklet
1. Use your experience: Consider the problem and try to make sense of it. Look for previous explanations. If this is a new problem to you, then move to step 2. - Stephen Mack
2. Form a conjecture: When nothing else is yet known, try to state an explanation, to someone else, or to your notebook. - Stephen Mack
3. Deduce a prediction from that explanation: If you assume 2 is true, what consequences follow? - Stephen Mack
4. Test: Look for the opposite of each consequence in order to disprove 2. - Stephen Mack
If this doesn't get as many comments and likes as Cristo's posts about ghosts, I'm going to be grumpy all week. - Stephen Mack
As for the horse picture: A great example of the scientific method at work. From the wiki article: "Belief can alter observations; those with a particular belief will often see things as reinforcing their belief, even if to another observer they would appear not to do so. Even researchers admit that the first observation may have been a little imprecise, whereas the second and third... more... - Stephen Mack
Um yeah, this is obvious. Why would there need to be any discussion on this Stephen? - Ken Gidley
I haven't read Cristo's posts about ghosts (I have a tendency to overlook such things), but I guessing you're not into the supernatural Stephen? - Dario Gomez
Ken, agreed there's not too much controversial about the scientific method itself. But I wanted to post it to counterbalance some of the other discussions about space aliens/ghosts/etc. This is what I believe in -- not as a religion, per se, but as a life philosophy: Test your theories. - Stephen Mack
Dario, I love the supernatural. For fiction. - Stephen Mack
I want science to get some more love today. - Stephen Mack
Goodonya! - Alex Scoble
So what is the count of likes and posts vs Cristo's? - Dario Gomez
Way behind. Way way way way behind. - Stephen Mack
I agree completely, but where it breaks down as a life philosophy is testing the theories. Many theories can't be adequately tested. What then? I'm just curious how you address it, as in my experiences that's where the supernatural vs. science arguments tend to break down and get ugly. - Lo
It's not a theory if it can't be tested. - Alex Scoble
Alex, so you're saying we have the technological ability to do every experiment I can conceive in my head? No matter how unethical? AWESOME! I have hundreds... but seriously, sarcasm aside there are plenty of theories that we aren't able to test for various reasons. - Lo
viva el hypothesis. ;) - chaz2b
Lo, you're right, there are bunches of theories that are difficult to test (expensive, unethical). And then there are some that it's either impossible or difficult to come up with any valid method of testing. I think what Alex is getting at is that if it can't be tested at all (if it isn't falsifiable), it probably doesn't have any real-world implications -- no predictive power, for example. - Stephen Mack
Yeah, I get it. That's not what I meant, anyway. You previously mentioned the scientific method as life philosophy, which I interpreted (perhaps incorrectly) to mean you are one of us who uses it to make decisions in all areas of your life. I love living this way, but I find that on many occasions I'm required to make some decision without any obvious way to test the possibilities (lack... more... - Lo
Again, if you can't test it, it's not a theory, it's a hypothesis or idea. People need to stop throwing around the term "theory" like it's swag handed out at a convention. A theory is an idea or hypothesis that has undergone rigorous testing and peer review. It's not just some idea that you came up with at the top of your head. - Alex Scoble
The scientific method isn't my entire world view. It doesn't provide values or goals, for example, so it's not enough to subsume decision making, just help guide it. But for me it has a critical role for belief: Do ghosts exist? Should I get swine flu vaccines for my kids? Should I try homeopathic medicine? If I see a flashing light in the sky, is it space aliens? - Stephen Mack
Interesting theory, Alex! :) - Stephen Mack
Oy vey...may the droppings of a thousand meese find their way in to your bed tonight, Stephen. - Alex Scoble
And for the record, if geese is the plural of goose, than meese is the plural of... - Alex Scoble
Heh heh! - Stephen Mack
Well we should talk about science here to bump this to the top. Dark matter, do you believe in it? - Dario Gomez
Good question, Dario. I don't know much about the theory, but it seems pretty underdeveloped, like, "Well, we have no idea where all the mass is, we can't see it, so it must be invisible and out there somewhere." - Stephen Mack
You know, I don't really mind people believing in ghosts, time travel, space aliens, singularities, or the Loch Ness Monster despite lack of any evidence. Live your life, believe what you want to believe -- as long as it's inconsequential, like those things. Start in with denying your kids care because you don't believe in medicine (only homeopathy), or put my kids in danger because you have an irrational fear of vaccinations for your kids -- that's where I have the biggest problem. - Stephen Mack
+1 on that, Stephen. - Kurt Starnes
When you reference other people's work, you should provide the appropriate citation: http://friendfeed.com/cristob... :) None of my proposed conjecture was supernatural, as some here have suggested. Read it for yourself to judge. Also, I never said my musings were scientific, at least I don't remember saying that. - Cristo
Good point on the cite (it was "posts" about ghosts, but I should have linked to all of them). I don't have a problem with your separate conjecture about a possible explanation for ghosts as energy; but as presented it's not falsifiable and doesn't have predictive power, so it's pretty much inconsequential. If your musings aren't scientific, how can we evaluate them? Are they poetry or something instead? - Stephen Mack
Stephen, I posted the wrong link. Thanks for catching it, and I'll update it. As for my conjecture, I missed the part in the FriendFeed TOS about having to only post scientifically provable theories. ;) - Cristo
It's right there, just before the part that requires you to be serious and full of meaning in every post and comment. - Slappy Line
Alex, your problem is just with my use of the word "theory" in a manner other than that strict definition used in the natural sciences? Wow. You are right, of course. Now, I think I have a theory, no sorry, hypothesis as to why this post is less popular :P (edit: that sounded bitchy... what I meant is that people who are obsessed with factual truth can be rather arduous to converse with... more... - Lo
Lo, science is tiring sometimes, it's true. - Stephen Mack
I don't think science is tiring, I love it! Understanding the world around me never gets old. Listening to people argue about science can get tiring... science is one of those things where everyone thinks they know what it is, but outside the scientific community there are a lot of misconceptions. (ETA: hell, there's plenty of fail within the community these days) - Lo
