Facebook Change of Policy: Why You Should Care « Pixel Bits
"Take the 25 Things, for example. People were complaining about how stupid it was, but fact remains, it spread. Even TIME Magazine wrote an article about it. No one can predict what will spread. I am not trying to make you paranoid nor am I trying to start a TOS revolution. All I’m saying is remember the next time you upload or import something to share, Facebook WILL own it and you have given them the right to redistribute - and profit." - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ from Bookmarklet
You read it! haha I can tell because most people copy the beginning and not the end LOL Thanks, Chris. :) - Mona Nomura
OK, but don't we all profit from each others knowledge? Sometimes we make money from it; sometimes we don't. However, the human race learns from each other, online or offline. Everything we post in every public place can be read and used as part of a learning curve by someone else. - Ian May
Facebook has apps that specifically encourage content sharing. Unsuspecting proud mommies for example, that want to show off their kids. Essentially, Facebook can take that popular picture and sell it to any company that can use that photo for an ad campaign. THAT is why it's concerning. - Mona Nomura
Facebook owns me = FacePwnMe? - Josh Haley
Josh, that sounds all kinds of wrong LOL! - vijay
This has bothered me since the first invite to FB years ago at which time I read the TOS and resisted signup for a time. To this day I've uploaded a total of 1 photo and I don't write much content (left a link to my 25 things post which lives on my blog). - Micah
The TOS says they own any content you "Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings". The part about "on or in connection with" and "or the promotion thereof" is confusing. Does that mean if I post a link on FB to a photo hosted on my own site, they own the photo? - Tom Harrison
Tom - I am not qualified to answer questions related to legalities. Anyone? - Mona Nomura
OMG the image - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Would a Creative Commons license prevent them from using your stuff? - Amani
...why do I think Bjork and "Human Behaviour"? - JA Castillo
Is anyone really surprised about this from the company that brought you Beacon? - Mr. Gunn
Nope, their TOS says you are granting them ownership of anything you post on the site. To me this means you are licensing your content to them for unlimited and unrestricted use. This would preempt any other licensing you defined prior to entering into the agreement with them. - Jeff P. Henderson
"You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof. You represent and warrant that you have all rights and permissions to grant the foregoing licenses. - Jeff P. Henderson
Does this include the groups you make as well if you make the "become a fan" of things? This is crazy. You are better off not adding your blog links to facebook, correct? - Amani
So this means that they can sell or do whatever they want with that photo of you sucking on a bong or flashing your boobs at that frat party last Friday night! Even if you decide to delete it, they can still do whatever they want with it! - Jeff P. Henderson
Does any of our opinions change after readying Zuckerberg's response? - Amani
I'm not a fan (Zuckerburg) but I love Facebook. I choose to use the site but it's always a necessity to be aware. - Mona Nomura
Zuckerberg totally sidestepped the issue we are complaining about here. So no. - Jeff P. Henderson
Check out the last two paragraphs. I asked him to explain this part: "We're at an interesting point in the development of the open online world where these issues are being worked out." and what he means by "missteps". Interesting. - Mona Nomura
I am thinking just to be safe, deleting my feed and blog stuff from FB. That might make the group I made totally useless though. Don't want to lose that group of people interested in my show. - Amani
Regarding Zuckerberg's response, "just trust us" is not an acceptable response. - Tom Harrison
This is about changing the rules. FB can't do it without consent or a bail-out policy. - Alexandros Georgiadis
