Apple Yanks The Cord On GV Mobile. Is It Trying To Kill Google Voice On The iPhone?
Sean Kovacs, the developer behind the popular app GV Mobile, has written on his blog that Apple is going to be removing his application, citing the fact that it “duplicates features that come with the iPhone”. - Joshua Schnell from Bookmarklet
And they discontinued VoiceCentral as well. http://www.riverturn.com/iphone... - Christopher Harley
Crap! I totally forgot to download it... now it's gone... :( - Walt Ruppar
They're afraid that someone will call and leave dirty, dirty voice mail that a 2 year old might hear. - Tad
At least they won't pull the app off my phone. In the cab business I use my GV # to screen call backs from drunken Frat dorks whom I'd rather never have my real number. But I still need to reach them when they're one among dozens of Von Dutch hat wearin' oglers at the strip club. TMI? Well now you know. - Christopher Harley
what the hell apple. The iphone is a tool that i paid for who r u to tell me how to use it!! - Tom Searing from BuddyFeed
Thank god for Appulous. - Adi
Apple is making it so easy for me to chose the Google phone from t-mobile next month. - dave burke
Total BS! I wrote a post that covered a bunch of these issue about a week ago (http://thenextweb.com/2009...). Apple might as well block my .mac account from being able to be accessed on a Windows machine. - Mike Bracco
I have GV Mobile - tonight I was using the Google Voice web version on my iPhone and it was actually faster and better than GV Mobile anyway. It even showed me calls that GV Mobile left out. It is very troubling, however, how Apple pulls apps for their own benefit, as this hurts developers and users. - Kelly Johns
I don't usually say this: fuck apple! - k00pa from iPod
WTH Apple!? - zsafwan 
It was apple.. just reading the article my bad.. I thought do Google was releasing there own app though... - Sebastiaan van den Akker
+1 Dave Burke. I was torn between the iPhone 3gs and the new HTC Hero... The way Apple is reinforcing the walls around their garden makes purchasing decisions like this a little easier. - Andrew Terry

I learned to type faster & chat... remember the "CB" ? - Scarletcat
Never had a CompuServ account - I was on GEnie, loved their RoundTables. - Ranger Craig
As much as I wasn't even aware that Compuserve still 'existed,' I'm somehow sad to hear of its passing. It was my first online experience, I had good friends and strange experiences on the forums. Anyway, there's solace in the joys of the real-time web. - Brad Kligerman
I gave a talk last week comparing Compuserve's eventual absorption by the browser based Internet to how OpenSim -open-source, open-standard virtual worlds- will inevitably subsume Second Life and other walled gardens. - Brad Kligerman
I remember it well. EAASY Sabre... - James Schipper
I had an account in 1979 MicroNET/CompuServe... ah, with a Novation 300 Baud Acoustic Coupler...that would 'hiccup' if I played my music too loud (The 1200baud direct connect was awesome) I ran a few forums for various companies and went thru all of the versions of the software until AOL bought them. We didn't even have "CB" at first... we did have a programing area where someone made... more... - RAD Moose
Such a sad passing. I got my internet start in Compuserve. I maintained a CS account all these years too, hehe. - Barbara

ahh, goodbye 71260,45! the number I remember to this day.....just like mike I'm not sure either. It's kinda like your SS # or birthday. You'll never forget............ - Alex Marrow
First like most, I didn't even realize Compuserve was still around. I think I was about 12 when I first got on Compuserve. Like many it was my introduction to the Internet. I remember leaving for AOL, and being sort of sad, because Compuserve seemed cooler to me - Ken Goyette
compuserve _was_ cooler - Tyler Gillies
I remember compuserve. The was another similar service that started with P. Paragon, Paradise, Parallax, Prometheous, or something. What was that one? Got bought out by Sears? - SuezanneC Baskerville
Prodigy, baby. Prah di gee. They had the Sears catalog, I used a credit card to order some tools using a gopher-style menu and I thought that was pretty cool. - Brian Hendrickson
It sure was. My first time online was with Compuserve in 1980, right before H&R Block bought them. It was the only service that was available on the Amiga also. I just checked, and they're still in business. I had no idea they were around still. - Michael Fidler

Cut and paste was worth the wait, select all is amazing but the winningest feature of 3.0 is *drumroll please* Spotlight. Period. #fb
Nope - push notifications. PUSH! - Sparky
Still haven't experienced push...launching IM now. - Mona Nomura
I'm really surprised Twitter hasn't used Push as an opportunity to launch their own iPhone app - Jesse Stay
Zu - I still don't need cut and paste but it was WELL worth the wait. The execution = flawless! - Mona Nomura
Spotlight is sweet, didn't think i would be as excited by that feature, I can find my music easier now - Tom Searing
What are the best, currently available apps to play with push/background notifications? - Ryan
How did iPhone users get IM notifications while in other apps prior to this? - Christopher A Carr
IM and AIM, AP News. - Mona Nomura
Can you select text to copy from http://friendfeed.com/iphone ? Mine can't. - Josh Haley
Spotlight was THE missing feature. Now we gots it! - Matthew Vaughan
Josh: Not sure why you wouldn't be able to. I've no problem doing so with Android. - Christopher A Carr
Copy and paste can only be done via text input field. - Mona Nomura
Update definitely not worth it for the touch, though. Thankfully, I got my touch for free so I don't feel like it was a waste. - Neal Jansons
Not so, Mona. I can copy text on other websites. - Josh Haley
Christopher Carr. Was that supposed to be funny? - Josh Haley
I am paying just for spotlight, Neal. Josh - ya? Interesting, I wonder what the rules are. (Can you tell I don't use copy and paste? haha!) - Mona Nomura
Josh: No, sorry, I was assuming that the new iPhone copy/paste functionality was basically the same as Android's. - Christopher A Carr
Why are you comparing them? Seriously, I love Android and I love Google but at the current state all the Android handsets are not even in an iPhone's league. - Mona Nomura
Oh, fine, Mona. Of course that depends on what you're looking at. For instance, the Dream and Magic both have better cameras than iPhone. ...I'm more interested in the OS differences. - Christopher A Carr
And I am more interested in the overall user experience. :) - Mona Nomura from IM
Bad news: My 1st gen Edge phone feels like it's swimming underwater with this new update. GOOD news: a new iPhone in my future ,-) - Jess
SO JEALOUS! I also have the 1st gen but won't update til Fri when teh jailbreak is out. Tho I can't afford the new 3G S :sad panda: - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕ from IM
All done and updated. Now time to play with it. - Amani
Jess, can you explain what you mean by that? I just put 3.0 on my Edge phone but haven't really used it yet. What should I expect? - joey
joey - when I tap any existing app on my phone, it takes several seconds to open...much longer than usual. When I open certain apps (Twitterfon and Gmail, for instance) it crashes, everything goes black for a few seconds, then it returns to the unlock screen. - Jess
Mona: Part of that "experience" is this push workaround for not being able to have an IM app running in the background. - Christopher A Carr
Chris, work around or not, it basically does the same thing. Though I'm not too worried about it, since my dependence for IM has ceased since purchasing the iPhone. Now people know to FB message, email, or SMS instead of IM when they really need to get a hold of me. Works for me. - Mona Nomura from IM
But it doesn't do the same thing. You have to quit whatever app you're in to launch the app for which you're receiving a notification. You ought to be able to pause your video, switch to your IM to tell them "shh" while you finish what you're doing, then switch back and resume your streaming video. - Christopher A Carr
OK -- done being a hijacking skunk at the garden party. :) - Christopher A Carr
Chris - I hear you, but those minor things don't bother me. I'd still choose an iPhone over any other phone. The Pre was the only thing that would've made me switch but I'm not so sure anymore after dling 3.0. - Mona Nomura
Spotlight is fabulous. Now I'm trying to find my Palm V so I can finally throw it away. - Liviu Barbat
Cut and paste is a big win for me, badly needed it for work on the road, Spotlight is brilliant for finding contacts but Push? What is this push thing? Hardly ever use SMS or IM; they can wait until convenient. - Sally Church
Oh bugger, you can't cut/paste from someone's tweet or some text :(. That kind of reduces the utility considerably. Hmmm - Sally Church
Ya, I'm not really understanding the stipulations of copy and paste - some pages/apps you can, others, you cannot. I'm a tad confused. - Mona Nomura
Mona, if you mean certains apps. then yes. the developer of the app has to enable cut/copy/paste in their apps. as for websites, i'm not too sure what the safari likes and doesn't like for copy/paste yet. - John Wang
Safari. :) SMS and apps I can just forward or email a screen shot, so there is no need for copy and paste. - Mona Nomura
Ah but I want to copy and paste text into a client report while on the road for example, or add quotes to a blog post without have to retype the thing. Or copy/paste text from an article into my Delicious bookmarks to make it easy to remember what the article was about while scanning tagged science articles. I use my iPhone as a business tool to avoid lugging a laptop everywhere. - Sally Church
If those are your first priorities then I don't know how you used the iPhone for so long, Sally LOL. Blackberries are much better for business power users. i.e. document management, email, and multi-tasking. - Mona Nomura
Mona- are you going to buy the new one? - Amani
Unless there is drastic performance difference the answer is no. Lemme think about that again. NOPE. - Mona Nomura
But, Mona, how will you live without barcode scanning apps? :) ...something to be said for being able to take a short video and upload it to youtube, though... - Christopher A Carr

None of this reporting -- None of it -- would be possible without online tools. Robert -- there's the 2010 Web! I seem to remember your earlier question (a few months ago) about the definition of journalism. This is it. It's not up to the "paid journalists" at the NY Times or Chicago Tribune anymore. It's up to you, me, people like @jamesbuck, and the person who took this photo and put it online. - Curt Mercadante

I'm not really surprised, Iranians are a lot more empowered than people in the West think. It is *not* Saudi Arabia! - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)

Curt, right, after listening to Scoble on a panel about the future of Journalism, and he was the only one "journalizing" it via Kyte, I wrote a post that the future of Journalism is a video camera or in this case a camera. I remember that it was the camera and video camera that stopped Vietnam for instance - Stephen Pickering
And, putting aside for a bit whether or not CNN ignored the story -- we're now getting news that NBC's Tehran office may have been raided and the BBC has been told to "get lost." Under oppressive, censoring regimes like we have in Iran, North Korea and China -- citizen journalists empowered by new communications tools will be the ONLY way we get accurate news from these regions. - Curt Mercadante

If anyone ever doubted the revolutionary, real-time impact of Social Media, this photo easily dispels those misconceptions.... - John Fenzel
Amir: you have a fan for life. I hope you do win the Pulitzer Prize. I think you got the iconic photo of the election protests. This one should hang in Newseum's Pulitzer Gallery. Can you tell us how you shot it, and give us more details about what was going on in your head as you pressed the shutter button? To everyone else, don't you love friendfeed? - Robert Scoble
Amir: when I took photojournalism at San Jose State University one quote stuck in my mind from all those classes over the years "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." That quote was from Robert Capa, here's an article in Time Magazine about it: http://www.time.com/time... You have gotten close enough. Congrats, I can't even imagine trying to get this close. I hope all comes out well for your country and you. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I've only been using friendfeed for about 5 days and I'm already in love with it. I guess I picked a good time to try it out! - Alex Hellstrom

@answers Are you going to buy the new iPhone 3G S? Why or why not? M$1
I would if I didn't just switch to ATT in January. - Richard Leiter
I got my 3G in September, so I'm not sure what my options are for upgrade. But if it's $399 for the 3GS, I'll buy one. - Paul Ring
Not with the current 3G upgrade path. - Ben Newton
I will definitely be buying one,I have a first generation iphone and have been holding out for this day. - Lee
Yep I am upgrading to the 32GB one! - Susan Beebe from BuddyFeed
I am very much considering it, but money's tight! :| - Geoff Schultz
No, as it would cost me way too much now as I bought the 3G a year ago. Disappointed. :( - Steve de Mena
Nope, mid contract and way too much for the upgrade - Tom Searing from twhirl
yes, but waiting for the Jul 11 anniversary when I bought it to make the switch. otherwise iphone 3G S will cost too much - Ernie Oporto from twhirl
Nope, because AT&T's non-qualified upgrade is too harsh. If I could upgrade the 3G I bought in January for $199, then I might consider it. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Nope. The UK upgrade path is crazy for current 3G owners. :( - Aaron Dyer from Alert Thingy
yes absolutely. i am still using the original iPhone, which I have to say still works great for being two years old. I didn't see that much of an advantage to upgrading when the first 3G came out, but now there seems to be enough new features that it makes it worth it. - Jennifer
@Jandy AT&T's upgrade policy is no different than any other cell carrier's policy, in making you wait 2 years before upgrading for a greatly reduced price. I am excited that they're subsidizing at all actually; when I bought my original iPhone there wasn't any subsidizing and I paid full-price *and* was locked into a 2-year contract. If you ask me, their policy now is a lot better than it was then. - Jennifer
Just got my 3G for work going to try to upgrade. Not to fussed though. - Jason Remnant
I would buy it now if I was upgrade eligible. Oh well, gotta wait until December. We'll see if it is a big deal. Personally I wouldn't want 3Gers to comfy, and get 'em while the upgrade itch is hot. - sailorj
No because they aren't available with Verizon :( - Adam Martin
No. Will wait for the next iphone when my two year contract comes up for renewal. iPhone 3GS features and price are not worth it for me. - Carlos
Yes. I have a first gen iPhone, the better battery life, autofocus camera, video, gps and compass are enough & being faster also - Shannon Clark
No. Like many others, I'm mid contract. I'd pay $299 for the update, but not $399 or $499 depending on the model. - Michael Groner
upgrade price not worth it for features i get with quickpwn - Tyler Gillies from email
Tyler - you are just flat out wrong. A jailbroken iPhone won't have: autofocus camera (of higher quality), builtin compass, be ready for next gen data networks (up to 7mps), have a faster processor & better battery. I'm upgrading from a 1st gen so the diff is big if I had a 3G it might be closer - Shannon Clark
i was mostly using hyperbole. those features just aren't worth the upgrade price to me. - Tyler Gillies
Just checked, I have to wait until February. Aarrrgh! - Paul Ring
Not available on my provider, another year on contract. Also starting a new job, so will probably get a company mobile (Crackberry). So probably not getting one any time soon. - David Wright from twhirl
Data plans for AT&T are still keeping me from getting into smartphone craze...yet I may be cheap. - Manuel Mas
Here in the UK if you have the existing Iphone 3G you probably have at least 6 months of contract to run - bit of a rollercoaster - June 19th then damn January 2010 :( - David W
Still no pricing here. T-Mobile haven't updated their tariffs, you can arrange to be notified on the 19th though... :-S - David Wright from twhirl
I preordered a 3GS last night from the online apple store. I still have a first ten phone, so thankfully I qualified for the lower pricing. - Beau Liening
Yes, but when I can get the subsidized price (December) - Martin Johnson
definitely not before the contract renewal is possible and who knows how I will feel about it then.. - David W
Probably not. iPhone 2g still works great for me. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
@Jennifer, I know, and I agree that the initial iPhone customers got screwed, too. But just because it's an industry standard doesn't mean I have to agree with it or like it. I haven't jailbroken because I was hoping to get a new handset with video support, but I may jailbreak instead in the meantime and pick up the new handset when my contract is up. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Planning to!! Features that are going to stay for a while from now. The problem in India is the price tag (31 & 36 grands). Looking forward to get one from the US. But then AT&T sucks there :O - Praveen Vasudev
I setup a POLL for this topic at http://www.s-consulting.no/polls... Let me see the stats! - Frode Stenstrøm
No - bad working out by o2 with regard to current 3g owners and the length of their contracts. I'm guessing they know hardcore Apple fans will buy out the remainder of their contract to get the new phone. That, I'm not going to do. I don't have £464 upfront to end my current contract and purchase the new handset. - Charlotte M
It is really irritating me how much people are complaining about this. No one cared about their 2 year contract when the only thing to look forward to was a $30 flip phone. Maybe contracts are a dumb idea but that's the way it is. Get over it. You just received a subsidized phone a year ago. What makes you think you deserve one every single year? It's nothing that they're doing to... more... - Jennifer
already brought 16G 3Gs set for delivery purchased it as soon as the Apple store opened back up - Kim Landwehr
In 6 months or so. O2 have the same idiotic plan as AT&T. It would cost me a fortune to cancel and then sign a new contract. - Roberto Bonini
Yes, my Blackberry/Verizon contract is up, and I've heard people love At&T so I'm switching. - Greg Birch
@Greg Birch - pls tell me you're kidding. - John Fogarty from twhirl
Yes, but It's like having to choose a contract with the Mafia, Yakuza or the Triads. Eventually you're going to lose an appendage. - Greg Birch
that's a very accurate description. As long as you realize that AT&T = Yakuza. :) - John Fogarty from twhirl
I can dial without a pinky... - Greg Birch
Nope. I just purchased my 3G in November. I'll wait and see what Apple comes up with in the next 18 months to replace mine when my contract expires. - Bryan Clark
Nope---happy with my 3g. - Kelly W.
AT&T sucks, and I am not willing to allow Apple to decide what applications can be put on my phone - Chad Albert
I like AT&T but, I sure don't like their iPhone plan. Might get me a G1 or another HTC product that will take android. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Unfortunately, I just bought two iPhone 3Gs....so I'm going to wait a while. It seems every time I purchase an Apple product, they drop the price soon thereafter. Which is okay -- since I'm willing to overpay for Apple products but not pay discount for anything Microsoft at this point. - Curt Mercadante
Nope - N97 unlocked for me. Even at ~$600 it's cheaper than the Iphone. Plus better camera, physical keyboard, FM transmitter, etc etc - Mark Zip
I've been waiting to buy an iPhone and plan to make the 3GS my first one. - Herb Hernandez
nope. 3G with 3.0 OS is good enough for me. - Johnny from fftogo
Not unless AT&T waives their STUPID $200 loyal customer tax - Graphic Makeovers
I just got an Android instead! - Ric Johnson
lol loyal customer tax - Tyler Gillies from email
I'm getting the new iPhone 3GS because I have been delaying my buy decision for new cellphone waiting for Apple to drops it's new iPhone - Sebastiaan van den Akker

I was a Palm user back in the black and white days of the Handspring Visor. I've also used the Palm VII (briefly), and the Treo 600. Oh yeah, and the Tungsten E, and also a Dell Axim (obviously not Palm but MS mobile). I liked Palm OS for a long time, but the Treo made me switch to a to a Blackberry 7800 (loved it). I now use a Tmobile G1. It would take some time for me to warm back up to Palm. Interested in how the Pre works out. - Nate

Also, 'post to friendfeed' is on our list of features to add. If a bunch of FFers become users, we'll add it sooner. Is this a feature you want? - Simon Plashkes
I'd like post to friendfeed, Simon. BTW, I bought it this morning (I was a beta user)... - Brad Brooks
Ophan looks interesting. The main page at http://ohpan.com/ looks like it is still in Beta. - David Sky
giving it a try... - Jason Wehmhoener
@David - it is still in beta. Makes me cringe a little actually - now that the iphone app is in the wild, we can get back to making ohpan.com awesome. More soon! - Simon Plashkes
OK, this is a pretty cool app. I was worried about not being able to add sources, but there's already a ton of good stuff in there. nice! - Jason Wehmhoener
Thanks Jason - adding sources soon - and we'll be really quick on add requests sent to addthis@ohpan.com - even tell us from a topical POV and we'll get on it. - Simon Plashkes
Downloaded the app. I like it, very addicting for us news junkies. It will take time to see how the news feeds are tailored to each user. - Tom Searing
Now that I've used this a bit, wanted to say that yes, Friendfeed sharing would be a really great addition. - Jason Wehmhoener
@Tom - thanks thanks! Remember to make liberal use of STRIKE and star. If you do this, your personalization is assured! We're adding some feeds that Jason sent over now. Cheers and thanks again. - Simon Plashkes

@answers How is the recession effecting Starbucks? How do people justify $5 cups of coffee? Did "Starbucks thinking" crash the economy? M$1
People bought what they wanted without regard to needs or wants. Starbuck is a symptom of how people thought. - Tom Searing
I have never understood why people would drop that much money on a cup of coffee. - Hunter
Starbucks lost me last year when they killed their decaf offerings. Pike Place decaf is awful, and they no longer offer decaf frappaccinos. I was spending $50/month at Starbucks, now it's zero. - Sean OBrien
People like to harp on "$5", but that's really an exaggeration. $5 is not just for a simple cup of coffee. Let's compare apples to apples. I'm not at SBUX right now, but if memory serves, a tall coffee at SBUX costs just north of $1. That's pretty much what you'd get at most coffee places or diners. It might be a tad more expensive, but if you don't want to pay $5 don't get a triple-shot, mocha venti blah blah blah... - Scott Paley

ZumoDrive – Cloud Storage Service With A Twist

"ZumoDrive is an online storage service that everyone can use to store their files in the Cloud and access them from different computers. What makes it different from the rest of its competitors is the way it manages the data on your computer. Most storage services create a folder on your local hard drive and sync all of the data to/from that folder. This might be a good idea in order to keep the data in sync, but what if you are using a 4GB Netbook and you have 10GB of data in the cloud? Your Netbook won’t be able to hold all the data." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
This sounds really good. I'd like to use a online file storage service, which one would you recommend? - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol If you just wanna dump stuff and forget it, I'd recommend Drop.io or Filedropper. If you're looking for syncing, Dropbox is the leader by far in terms of platform support. HOWEVER, Zumo could kill Dropbox overnight if it supports direct linking, which Dropbox does many file storage sites don't. - LANjackal
Yeah looking for syncing, I'll give Dropbox a go just wished it gave us more space for free. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Meh. Doesn't allow direct links. Dropbox still rules. Uninstalling as we speak. Oh well. Oh yeah and complete uninstallation requires a reboot. Eww. Not worth it IMO - LANjackal
ZumoDrive is very similar to JungleDisk (paired with Amazon S3 or Rackspace.com). .. I think I'll stick with JungleDisk for now. - Peter Ghosh
It is similar to JungleDisk, but I like the mobile client. I store my music on my ZumoDrive and stream it to my iPhone. Helps me get around the 8GB local storage limit. ;) - Kevin C. Tofel
I'm currently using ZumoDrive for my Aperture library (about 30G) and parts of my music library (about 20G). The only annoyance is an occasional slowness when opening an image that's not in the local cache; there's sometimes a delay. (n.b. only part of my music library has been uploaded because I am severely constrained on upload bandwidth.) - Glen, Bespectacled Elder
I started using this last night. Very nice. I definitely will upgrade the storage in the near future. - Tom Searing
This is excellent I am thinking of using it and upgrading to a monthly fee. - Jose Luis Santos
I'm using DropBox & Livemesh (have some MS addict around me) but i like the Zumo approach of using the cloud as extra storage and not only synced miror, i think that none of the others offer it right now - it's still not there (seamless "cloud") . wish i had the time and funds to execute an idea that will get further into "seamless cloud" - Naor Mark
