Hah, I hear the "tomato; tomahto" thing all the time, but I've never actually heard anyone use it the latter way except in that phrase.

I wonder if statistical machine learning could data mine pronunciations of the same word by hundreds or thousands of speakers, and find the "best" pronunciation. (Make that, possibly, millions of speakers.)
