is the journal of molecular cell biology a 'good' journal?
hang on, no, I looked at their website, all is suddenly clear to me! - Katherine Haxton
Can't be any good - doesn't have an impact factor. :-) - Bob O'Hara
It doesn't even have a first edition yet :) I was ripping apart a paper in it (journal club style) trying to get to the bottom of a BBC science story about nanoparticles and lung disease. - Katherine Haxton
Looking for a tablet PC type laptop to enhance teaching phys. chem. Anyone have any experience of using these?
Not all sea, sun and sangria. - http://network.nature.com/people...
interested to know what the main reason for shifting is? Just a wish to have more personal control or something deeper than that? - Cameron Neylon
mainly more personal control, but many of the discussions over last weekend helped 'crystallize' some aspects of blogging within a community in my head. I can't do what I want to do with blogging/online 'stuff' over on NN. - Katherine Haxton
fair enough kind of what I thought. Interesting how many people are starting to wish for or demand (depending on skill levels) more functionality for their online selves - Cameron Neylon
loves the updated version of Mendeley. It works beautifully.
now, if only all journals would use a DOI...oh wait...I'm a chemist, so PMID took a while to figure out... - Katherine Haxton
Any UK academics have any ideas why we can't send to yahoo or btinternet email addresses from anything on the JANET network?
mmm I don't seem to have a problem with this - at least to yahoo groups addresses. - Cameron Neylon

Lord Drayson's article in Guardian on science policy in UK. Another attempt to wrangle with pure vs applied science. - Katherine Haxton
And one of the more vicious comment streams I've seen in a while. Anyone might think the British are disenchanted with their politicians... - Cameron Neylon
What ever would give you that impression? :-) - Katherine Haxton
Actually I thought it a good response to Monbiot's rather wayward article (which also generated a slew of ill-informed comment). Didn't read most of the comments on Drayson's piece - the first few were simply motivated by political enmity. - Stephen Curry
I'm just tired of arguing over pure vs applied research. Both equally valid and equally important, both need supported but in different ways. I didn't go much into the comments either. - Katherine Haxton
Anyone know of any open funding schemes for undergraduate research students in the UK (chemistry projects)?
Scientiae Part II - a snappy snapshot before I snap! - http://network.nature.com/people...
Finds the NatureNetwork blogging site most infuriating at times.
Does anyone know of any good blogs/social networking type resources for analytical science? Giving a talk at an analytical chemistry conference next week about science blogging and similar and want to tailor it a bit.
But I can't think of anything helpful right off the top of my head. Relatively little hardcore analytical stuff that I am aware of - Cameron Neylon
I found a couple of general blogs, but I'll keep looking. Cheers! - Katherine Haxton

Does anyone have any experience of sci-mate? - http://www.sci-mate.org/
Not really - I think I poked around at one point and it didn't look so different to a lot of other social networky type things. It's got a little more thought put into what a particular object is for than most which is a little more sophisticated than many of these things but I don't see much evidence that there is a big community there. - Cameron Neylon
I had a look this morning - looked nice but not many folks there. Don't want to learn a new site for no reason. - Katherine Haxton

Katherine is planning an evening of Vampire Slaying...things are back to normal then.
Katherine past the point of caring. About anything.
