Yes - because to not do so would make the last month or so seem like "the good ol' days." - George Smith
No. Fuck the union insanity and fatcat execs. I would only be for it only if all the execs took massive pay cuts and the unions cut down ridiculous benefits but that will never happen. - Leather Donut
No. They've had more time, and more second chances, than most industries to fix what was wrong. - Rick Powell
I'm conflicted - primarily because family members work in related industries and their jobs would be affected; some are already on work/hours reduction. - Katy Southern
No because when it will stop. - orionstarr
No. The sooner we burn out these warts the better. - RefD
Bush's tax incentive to small business owners to write off most or all of the price of a large vehicle over $60,000 was like a gift from the heavens to the American auto industry. They had that gift for 8 years, dropped directly in their lap. So many vehicles were sold through this tax loophole that now we have a glut of giant trucks and SUV's on the road. And yet, after gas goes up a dollar or two, Detroit goes immediately in the toilet. This was bad business all around. I say no bailout. - Phil Glockner
No - I don't think inefficient businesses that can't make money because of crappy products should be "rewarded." The moral hazard has already been crossed with these bailouts. What next, Yahoo! gets a bailout? The cast of Heroes when their show gets cancelled? - Jason Kaneshiro
NO! NON! NADA! A bailout is the LAST thing the dinosaur auto sector needs. Give them Big Bucks for INNOVATION, electric cars and every other truly GOOD idea out there. We need vehicles. And North America has some of the finest auto manufacturers around. But we need an overhaul of the *type* of vehicles being produced. OIL is the past. - V for Veselka
Oh and I want MY bailout - Leather Donut
Yes- with conditions. Cars must be inovative using air and or solar power. These cars must be afordable, lets say 4,000 range. If we loose GM many will loose jobs "vertical" and "cross vertical markets" are connected to GM. We need GM to employee our young people. We also need GM to be a part of the trade schools that Regan removed. Lets do away with the ego's and start with soloa powered cars made by GM.One of the ideas is to give GM money for "innovation." Here's what one man working with high school students accomplished:"SEE VIDEO" :)http://www.brasschecktv.com/pa... - SekhemetsHathor
See this. http://friendfeed.com/e/dd02be... Do you want more of this? You forget these are politicians we are talking about. Most of them cant spell economy yet wield decisions with enormous financial consequence. - Leather Donut
no.no.no.no.no. why should you bailem out? shitty company? they deserve it. look at Toyota. great company. but what's the misconception? "Not American." What's the rules for being an American company? Toyota is firmly entrenched in this market, having a large workforce in America, strong market stake, buying power, sponsorship, establishing institutions, everything. Welcome to the globalized world, this sort of pseudo-protectionism should stop. - ♣genieyclo♣
sound like the auto industry needs investors. hey, auto-dudes, i'll allow the gub'ment to invest in a project for green cars. not $$ for SUVs, or golden parachutes, etc. green cars, get it? - MikeAmundsen
I want to say no, but $25 Billion is still cheaper than $125 Billion. I don't want to think that way but I can't help it. - Occasional Headbanger
They will be bailed out with conditions. GM needs to step it up and I agree that Toyota is a great company. But regardless of what you and I think it will never be our choice as long as you stay a slave to a system that regards you only as a consumer. Just like the bank bail out, I never okayed that one and we all are paying for it. Watching the fat cows get fatter. Put up or shut up Sovereign or bust! - SekhemetsHathor
No. Let them file bankruptcy and force them to restructure. The airlines did it, right? Again - no more bailouts until WE get one. - Vince DeGeorge
No, giving money to the auto industry now is only delaying the inevitable, unless they agree to specific changes. - Kim Landwehr
Yes, but only for the good of those whose jobs will be lost when they fail, however, the money must come with stringent terms with specific goals, lots of oversight, and available to anyone building or designing an auto in the USA. Though I have to say, I really don't want them to get the money, I'd rather them suffer from their past stupidity and greed. - xero
No, fuck them. They NEED to lose those jobs in light of this. "UAW Says It Will Rather Tax Payers Foot The Bill Than Accept Cuts To Keep Detroit Afloat" I need a job. Why the fuck should my taxes pay for someone else to have a job. Fuck that. http://bit.ly/fucktheuaw - Leather Donut
No. Unfortunately, businesses can't do bad business and then expect somebody to bail them out. Ford isn't going to let itself completely die. I'm also concerned about where the U.S. government is getting this money, and it sounds like the bank bailout is leaning toward a fail. I'm sorry to see people lose their jobs but I don't think this is the answer. - Patricia
no, they've had the american economy by the balls with their stubbornness and even refusal to adapt to cleaner, safer and more efficient technologies and business models and will continue to operate along the same manner if given a bailout. al these industries are like petulant children -- you cater to them in every way possible and they'll just ask for more and more - Cee Bee
After watching this morning the Treasury secretary change the last bailout - you know, the one that if it didn't pass the entire economic world would fall - I say no. Better to have a bailout for main street so they have more money to buy cars. What happened to good old fashioned capitalism? - Chris Reed
No, because the big auto makers have proven time and again how intransigent they are to change. They've been failing for a while now. It's time to let them die once and for all. - Steven Perez
The airlines had to restructure without help. The auto industry can do the same. - Leather Donut

"The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) urged a Kentucky Court of Appeals Wednesday to vacate a lower court's order authorizing the seizure of more than 100 Internet domain names associated with websites operating around the globe. The seizure, and the lower court's exercise of jurisdiction over global domain names, threatens free speech across the Internet. In a move to combat what it viewed as illegal online gambling, the Commonwealth of Kentucky convinced a state court to "seize" 141 domain names because the names allegedly constituted "gambling devices" that are banned under Kentucky law -- even though the sites were owned and operated by individuals outside of the state, and in many cases even outside of the country. Unless the sites screened out Kentucky users, the court held, the seizure order was proper." - MikeAmundsen via Bookmarklet

"As you probably know, the Bush administration is implementing a series of “midnight rules” before they leave town. And as Hilzoy noted earlier, the incoming Obama administration is examining ways to reverse these and other Bush rules. Interestingly enough, an obscure Gingrich-era law called the “Congressional Review Act of 1996” (CRA) could help the Dems prevent these rules from taking effect. It’s been used just once – by the Bush administration to overturn last-minute Clinton ergonomics regulations. But maybe it’s time to dust it off and take it for a spin." - Steven Perez via Bookmarklet

What a bunch of crap. Nothing in that article says anything about the criteria of the survey - how many people were surveyed, how many responded, etc. It could have been 100 people or 50 people or 500,000 people. It doesn't say that i could find, including on the link the article linked to. A smart journalist would have asked: what was the basis of the survey? That is what defines the outcome, more than anything. - Patricia

this videotaped altercation between Oakland Unified School District Police Chief Art Michel and Tribune photographer Jane Tyska is very troubling on many levels. I'd encourage you to watch the short videotape yourself but be warned that the police chief uses a lot of profanity in it. - Thomas Hawk
direct link to the video here: http://link.brightcove.com/ser... - Thomas Hawk
It's hard to tell exactly what started this altercation but it doesn't appear the officer handled it very well. Even if she did do something wrong. - Paul Wade
yeah, there is clearly an imbalance of power here. A shaken female reporter who I highly doubt is going to try to incite a "riot," vs. an overbearing cop. Even if the cop was in the right though there is no reason why a cop should use that type of anger or profanity with anyone. It's highly inappropriate and I hope he's forced to apologize for it and is disciplined. - Thomas Hawk
The officer abuses his power, seems to lie, threatens the reporter who is not confrontational, while he appears to be ignored by his colleagues (are they used to this behavior?). His apologizing would not be enough for If he does this when in camera, in a public confrontation with lots of people nearby, how can his word ever be taken if he were one on one and not in public view ? - David HC Soul
Unbelievable that people like that are allowed to be in positions of authority. He deserves to be permanently demoted. - Becca
There seem to be way too many people in law enforcement that clearly are not qualified. Just being able to yell, cuss & intimidate a female reporter who is cooperative does not qualify anyone. - Johnny Sewell
Quite emotionally charged isn't he? I wonder what really happened? The man deserves investigation of his actions to start. Termination if he is at fault and criminal action if indicated. The reverse is also true, he should receive appropriate disciplinary action for his conduct, but if the member of the press did commit some illegal act, then appropriate legal action should be taken in her case also. From this one clip the only thing you see is a very upset man. - Greer Trice

"How did a nations complicated political and cultural reality get boiled down into a two color palette? Red and blue have become shorthand for an entire sociopolitical worldview...Red states, to reduce the stereotypes to rather silly level, are a little bit country, blues are a little more rock-and-roll. There's even such a thing as a purple state, where the margin between Democratic and Republican votes has been too narrow to designate one as the majority. Dating back to 1908, the Washington Post arbitrarily assigned color codes on a map of electoral results. Evidently, in later years both parties strove to claim blue as their own (as in “true blue Americans”) and avoid red, with its connotations of radicalism. The color choices are of course, associated with the American flag. And very important in this day in age, also look good on a TV screen. Before the 2000 election recount charade, "blue states" and "red states" weren't always so clearly-defined. There was quite a bit of flip-flopping going on with - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
