Last Holden twitter I saw he was bummed because he was using FF to do all his aggregation and he completely screwed up his Google reader deleting his FF account some how. Apparently he didn't entirely think through this account deleting thing. He also seems to be casting about on Twitter hoping for it to respond like FF and it isn't, which is what I found when I tried to give up on FF a couple weeks ago.
- Ed Millard
Yeah I saw some of those Tweets: they were so clearly fishing for replies
- sofarsoShawn
As far as I know, this is the only time he deleted his account. He talked about doing so for a while. His post on twitter, were mocking me, not fishing for responses. And he figured out all his reading stuff apparently.
- Marissa
Truth be told I had never heard of Holden until he deleted his account the first time, a bunch of people tried to talk him out of it and then made fun of all the drama he caused in doing so.
- Jimminy
Oh, weird. I was under the impression that you guys were friends offline before you guys got on FriendFeed. I always associate you with him.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Nope, we bonded after he and I fought Scoble at the end of July.
- Jimminy
@Marissa I wasn't referring to any of his tweets that actually addressed someone in particular, but rather the ones throwing out questions about how he should go about designing his break through twitter app & other disengaged tweets that's where the fishing for responses metaphor refers to. Although I wouldn't be able to recognize your twitter name, so maybe he was trying to engage you....teen drama =/
- sofarsoShawn
Shawn I don't think she likes you very well. :/
- Jimminy
"we bonded after he and I fought Scoble at the end of July. - Jimminy". Now I got it :)

Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF

Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky, a big deal
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.

Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.

I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.
- Akiva Moskovitz
This should be in the default noobie FF stream. Like the first thing anyone who signs up sees. If they stick around they're part of the family.

It will go away, to be replaced with photoshops of the original. It's all part of the meme lifecycle.

As much as I am loathe to bump this post, I have to do it to say, You, sir, are a master. Well played, sir. Well played. This is why I take every opportunity to say, in my next life, I want to be Akiva. I've already called it! Don't anybody go getting any more ideas.
- ♥patricia♥
I, for one, refuse to "bump" posts...it's very unseemly...

For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.

- sofarsoShawn
The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.
- Matthew DeVries

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.

Observing my 19 year old cousin converse with her friends on Facebook is a whole new world. What language is it they are speaking? And when did I get so old? And why does no one know how to spell anymore? *facepalm*
Wait until it's yr 19 yo kid you are watching speak like that on FB :-) Makes me want to rush off on my Zimmer frame and write a Letter to the Editor and then call John Fayne on 774
- Threepwood
I'm only 20 and I can't see how they speak like that, it takes more effort than typing correctly. KekKEklajfapjaslkdfjakldsjf PIODJFIO PJ@#irj15r
- Andrew Trinh
I'm with Andrew, also a 20 year old, and I can't handle txtspeak, I can parse it, but I don't like typing it, especially if I have access to a full keyboard, I don't see a point.
- Jimminy
Even using my old Nokia phones I'd use a T9 dictionary to type it all out instead of txt speak.
- Andrew Trinh
Am I the only person who absolutely despises Knuth's "Computer Modern" font? I don't know what it is about it, but it just looks awful to me. And I'm one of those people who used TeX for everything including drawing finite automata and analytic tableaux back in college.
- Jim Norris
I'm with you, Jim. That's why, following the book _TeX Unbound_, I used other fonts in my LaTeXed thesis. From the colophon: "I used mathinst to make a mathematical font family of Monotype Bembo Semibold (from Agfa-Monotype), MathTime (from Y&Y), Chantilly (from Softmaker, similar to Gill Sans), Typewriter (from the Electronic Font Foundry), and a few others, with which I typeset this dissertation."
- Ruchira S. Datta
I always had \usepackage{times} in my LaTeX documents.
- Tudor Bosman
Times is almost as bad though. At one point I figured out how to use Adobe Garamond, but it was kind of flaky.
- Jim Norris
I didn't like Computer Modern or Times. I used Century Schoolbook for my stuff, I think (\usepackage{newcent}).
- Amit Patel
Dear Google: Please get rid of this page. Just add a setting so I can say "always use Google Reader for RSS feeds." (Or vice versa, or an option to always ask if someone uses both.) I've been going through this extra step for years now, and I am really tired of it.
I really wish they would kill it. I *NEVER* want to add a feed to my google homepage. I never go there.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Exactly, Rah. I've never chosen the Homepage option. Google knows everything about me, they should know by now that this page is worthless to me. And seriously, now with Google's profiles and centralized accounts, a persistent setting for this should be a piece of cake to implement.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Agree, always on the Reader! Great tool!
- John Tastad
Does it, Mitchell? I have Feedly installed at home, but I haven't noticed. I use Chrome at work, though.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Google Homepage just isn't needed for anything. I wish they'd pull the plug on that thing.
- Matthew DeVries
that is why i use the google reader "subscribe" bookmarklet ;-) (edit: you can find it in your google reader settings)

Jandy: there is a preview of feedly for chrome. If you are interested, please send me an email at edwink@devhd.com and I will send you an invite.

And that isn't a value judgment. If you love it, then I'm happy for you and want to see photos of your costume. But I've never dressed up and never gone to a Halloween party.
- cecily
from iPhone
It's an excuse to have a costume party. It also reminds me to start making all of the fall-ish goodies I like to eat. Plus, it's the one time a year when I'm not considered ghoulish or morbid. It's ok to like skulls!
- Katy S
I don't get the dressing up personally. Seems like too much effort/money spent. Like I said before, the only time I costume is for a masquerade/costume event that is usually for charity. Still, I'm always down for a party. I'm not a fan of Halloween parties though. When people act in character and they don't know when to stop it gets annoying.
- Anika
Well, most people I know don't wear the expensive costumes. Get a bunch of English grad students together for a Halloween party and it's more likely to be things cobbled together from what they have and what they got cheap at a thrift shop. It gets pretty silly. A lot of costumes end up being metaphorical concepts or something abstract. One year a friend went as our Preliminary Exams (exams we have to take to be allowed to write the dissertation). She taped copies of all of the reading lists to her clothes.
- Katy S
The same reason kids like to celebrate Halloween of course. It's fun to :D
- Mark Essel
I love dressing up for Halloween because I like the creativity challenge: how good of a costume can I make out of bits and pieces... It's not something I get to do much, if at all, during the rest of the year. At the other end of the spectrum is my husband, who at the age of 30 will be dressing up for Halloween for the first time IN HIS LIFE tonight.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Katy S - I like skulls all the time, myself. Halloween is just one more excuse to wear the skullie deelieboppers. :D I'm not much for dressing up though... I generally go as a serial killer and call it good. Though that sometimes seems to creep people out, which means I'm doing it right. muwhahahaha...
- Bette Cooper
My costume cost me $15 and is fabulous! I'd say I dress up about every five years, but I do like to go to parties. Last year, I just watched Rosemary's Baby on the couch with my boyfriend and handed out candy to cute little trick-or-treaters, but sometimes I like to get wild.
- Kaijsa Calkins
My wife once got dressed up in a little skirt and low cut top, and built a "sportscar" out of a box that she wore around her hips, like she was driving it. She was a "midlife crisis."
- DJF
I go back and forth. The past two years I've been too busy with other things to celebrate but look out next year. I'm gonna go all out ;)
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I think adults celebrate it as an excuse to get out of their house where freaking kids are knocking on their door every 5 minutes. I, instead, am drinking. :)
- Robert DeBord
What Mark Essel said. For me, Hallowe'en is about dressing up, eating candy, spooky atmosphere--it's all about play, & it takes me back to my childhood (in all the best ways).
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
Kris loves decorating, but not dressing up, or going out. And she doesn't want trick-or-treaters. I told her that I would get into it if/when we have kids, but in the meantime, it just does nothing for me.

H'ween is pretty much my favorite holiday. I'm an artist so I like creating my own costume. Fall/Winter is a tough time of year for people with SADS or people who live far enough north to have few hours of daylight. I'm in favor of as many holidays as possible to make the season go by. I'm a bit of a snob in that I don't feel it's very creative to buy a readymade costume (although...

I *really* wish I had thought at the time to respond, "why are you drinking??" Seriously, some people.
- Kamilah Gill
I love it as a kids' holiday, and my kids get so excited. My minimal costume this year is the first time I have "dressed up" in years.
- Steve is older than ever
I don't usually dress up, but I did this year because I figured the kids trick or treating would get a kick out of it. I'm just wearing a brown skirt and green tee I had with a homemade (fake) flower/ribbon head wreath and some faerie wings I picked up from the Disney store a few years ago on sale, though. I'd thought about knitting faerie socks, but that would've gotten expensive (sock yarn ain't cheap).

is having an external HDD that expensive?
